Another spy doesn't have a Merry BLACK CHRISTMAS!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love BLACK CHRISTMAS to death (the original) and have been very skeptical of this remake. I still feel the original is a product of its time and place and lives there better than it can live here. While the main review didn't care much for the film, he/she/it liked some aspects of the backstory. I'm curious to see what they do with this, but I'm not expecting to like it much. I do like some of James Wong's flicks, though, so who knows? Following this review is a little paragraph of unadulterated love that was attached almost as a PS, a mini-love fest from a friend who also saw the movie. Enjoy!
I just got in from seeing a test screening for the remake of the 1974 Horror film "Black Christmas" due out this Christmas. I had never seen the original movie but I did get a synopsis. Let me make this perfectly clear... I am NOT a gore fan! However I do like skillfully thought out, and intense horror movies. Senseless violence for shock value is not my thing at all. However if you would like to gauge yourself on my tastes I did enjoy Saw, Scream, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, & Silence of the Lambs (not really horror). Those movies had purpose, a good story, clever humor, intensity, and the villains were likeable as well as scary! IN MY OPINION, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HORROR VILLAIN YOU CAN DRESS UP AS ON HALLOWEEN, YOU HAVEN'T GOT A GOOD HORROR VILLAIN! Bottom line. But on to this Flick. I won't give too much away.
This movie had some great gore and some absolutely cheesy b-movie gore and makeup. And if you enjoy skull impalings and don't get held up in realistic facts... this film is for you. The basic story line is that an abused, sickly boy (Billy) is locked up in his attic for some 10 - 15 years after witnessing his mother kill his father on Christmas Eve. Anyway, after years of torment, he breaks free and brutalizes his family in some of the BEST, and actual story-based gore of the movie. He was locked away in an institution for years and becomes a local legend... and all he wants to do is be home for Christmas.
The only problem is that his house is now the home for a college sorority of rich and sexy asshole chicks who have all the typical characteristics of every other horror movie ho you have seen... The drunk chick, The bitch, the chicken, the hero, the friend, the den mother (who, apparently, was in the original) that have no place to be on Christmas Eve. Yet, they were played by good actresses, so the performances were ok.
OH, and its the worst storm of the century outside.
So Billy escapes and returns home. Yet people have already been dying. So the viewer knows there are two killers and the blame game is only played for a short period of time. The deaths are all very similar and non-creative (except in the flashbacks). The attacks are predictable, and the struggles are weak. And there is a lot to do about eyeballs in this movie.
Basically it all boils down to everyone gets it but the lead heroine, and since I saw what I can only believe to be an alternate ending, I cannot say who dies or doesn't for sure. But the version I saw didn't end on a scare and actually ended so poorly it made me forget till the next day anything I liked about the film.
However, I'm sure they will have a better ending for the final cut. And let me reiterate-the Flashback scenes were GREAT!
Overall, if you like a bad plot, gore with very little creativity, hot broads who, save for an extremely brief, dark shower scene, show no skin (which for a sorority movie I think is lame) and killers who don't really have any memorable characteristics... this movie is for you. I give it a C rating myself. However, I have attached a review of a friend of mine who loves all horror and what he thought.
Call Me Secret Squirrel.
And here's the attached review:
HORROR FANS REJOICE! My expectations were a little skeptical b/c this is another remake of a horror classic. HOWEVER, I was not disappointed at all! It was actually done really well! It may not have been quite as creepy as the original, but made up for that aspect with the amazing amount of gore! They even added a few new twists that I felt improved on the original idea of "Billy". Very sick, twisted, fun stuff! A refreshing return to the gore-soaked horror flicks of old! There's no way they're going to cut this baby down to a lame PG-13! I recommend this movie to all the true fans of slasher, splatter horror! I don't like to post spoilers, but if anyone would like to know anything, just ask. Merry Christmas!
