I gather Vic Mackay’s prime nemesis this season is going to an internal affairs guy played by Forest Whitaker.

Here’s the crazy thing about “The Shield” as it enters its fifth and perhaps final season. For years now, everybody’s been all about, “We gotta get the goods on Mackay, he’s Al Capone with a badge!” Five seasons of this.

But think back to the pilot. If somebody had just left the camera on in the interrogation room as Mackey began bludgeoning that child molester with the yellow pages, I’m pretty sure Mackey would have been working parking-lot security at the North Hollywood Target by the end of episode one. But maybe I’m missing something.

If this is the last season for Vic & Co., fans can take solace in the fact that “Shield” creator Shawn Ryan’s new TV collaboration with genius dramatist David Mamet, the Dennis Haysbert vehicle “The Unit,” should be hitting CBS in March, right around the time this new season of “Shield” is winding down.
