Wine & Cleese!!Herc
|
I am – Hercules!!
It’s called “John Cleese’s Wine For The Confused.” It airs 10 p.m. Sunday on The Food Network. This is the first time I believe I’ve ever discussed a show on The Food Network.
Coaxial News hasn’t seen “Confused,” but three years ago Cleese put together a completely engrossing four-hour TLC documentary titled “The Human Face” that I’ve thought about every day since.
And no one seems to have a bad word for this comedy genius’ latest:
Like its host, "Wine for the Confused" is both enlightening and lighthearted. … Cleese tells what wine the queen of England served when they dined together (it's a little surprising) and lets viewers spy on a wine tasting at his home in which nice, well-dressed guests a skit that leads to some valuable tips on how to order the wine you want without having to explicitly say "the cheapest one." …
… a wonderful special … Cleese mocks the pretensions of wine culture, the better to focus on the visceral pleasure found in the beverage itself. One bit, in which Cleese portrays both a confused diner and a bullying wine steward, plays exactly like a "Monty Python" sketch, from the "Possum's Leap 2000" wine the steward scoffs at, to the way he commands the diner to order a $140 bottle from France. "The Cote du Nuit '85 will do fine," he snaps, literally slapping the hapless diner's hand away from the wine list. …
… funny … cleverly skewers wine snobbery with an amusing, useful and down-to-earth primer …
Those busy with “Boston Legal,” the “Farscape” miniseries or other matters tonight will be pleased to learn they can also TiVo the hourlong special at 2 a.m. Monday morning, 5 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. next Sunday.
