Hey folks, Harry here... While Moriarty is off posting the filth of that Neill Cumpston, I figured I'd bring ya culture and cool from the New York Independent Film Festival complements of Captain Crunch. After all these years you'd think he'd be an admiral, but I guess his ship hasn't the best record. Anyway, here's 6 interesting titles to keep your eyes open for...
A Look At The NEW YORK INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL!
Hi Harry, Mori, Father Geek and Gang,
This report is about 2 weeks late, but I recently had the chance to check
out a bunch of films at the New York Film Festival. I saw about 15 films,
some were great some were so so. Just so this doesn't come off like a never
ending review, here's about six films that I thought were really good (most
of these were audience favorites as well) I will keep these brief and spoiler
free, hopefully you all may see one or more of these at your local festivals.
DROP DEAD ROSES-
This is one warped and twisted tale about revenge, breakups,
and the price of friendship. I saw a familiar face in BRIAN O'HALLORAN, who
I've only seen in Kevin Smith films, but in this I think O'halloran is
brilliant, he's come a long long way, everyone needs to see this film. Word
was he's even more twisted in a movie called VULGAR which I was told I'll
have to rent.
BLUE ME
Yes, I too, thought this was about oral sex. No such luck. However a
very interesting tale about a guy who's obsessed with the color blue. He sees
a girl who's obviously obsessed with the color red. He struggles against
other color obsessed fellows to win her over, not a word of dialogue is
spoken, but there's great comedy and a wild dance number! This was also a
great film, and one that will stick with you for a while after you've seen it!
THE MISSING
A very well done film noir, about a sleazy gumshoe detective who
may or may have not discovered an alien abduction. This has some really nice
twists and turns, there was a dvds floating around, this is definitely one
for my collection! If I can only get a hold of it.
TWENTY BUCK$
A great film, about a guy who just can't catch a break when it
comes to love. He finally meets a lovely lady who may be "the one" and she
writes her number on the back of a twenty. He then spends the twenty. He then
spends the rest of the movie chasing down the twenty, getting into all kinds
of adventures, hoping that if he finds the twenty, he'll find "the one". A
laugh out loud type of movie. Director Chris D'Elia was on hand to answer any
questions and handed out fake twenties.
THE WRONG FORTUNE COOKIE
This was a really funny film, which I as, well as a
few of my friends can identify with. This makes us pretty pathetic, the film
is about a guy who says all the wrong things to the girl of his dreams. His
roommate tells him to stop being a dork and to start being honest. So he
takes his advice, eats a fortune cookie, and reads his fortune. He takes the
fortune way too literally, and gets himself pumped up to confront the girl of
his dreams once and for all. This leads to possibly to one of the most
awkward moments that I may have ever seen in a movie, but does end with a
pretty upbeat funny conclusion. The director Tim Carr was also there to
answer questions and hang out with the crowd.
FRED'S SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE
This film was the one I was still laughing about a
couple hours after I saw it, it starts with a truly bizarre naked subtitled
dream sequence, and just when I started to think "what the f*** is this?" It
turned around very quickly and redeemed itself with a truly hilarious and
very twisted ending!
So Harry all in all it was a great weekend for little known films, the
audience seemed to enjoy these as did I. Quite frankly in a world where "Just
Married" and "Bringing Down the House" make enormous sums of cash, I was
just relieved to see that there are still some interesting and original films
being made!
smoke 'em if you've got 'em if you don't got 'em then you've hit
rock bottom,
