I have it so bad that yesterday I was in a park kissing some dude in a Spider-Man costume... I noticed somebody with a camera, so I stopped, but the man didn't show me the movie like he promised. BASTARD. Not fair. MOVIE MOVIE MOVIE.... Show Now!

Review of Spiderman.

Just saw a screening of Spiderman in NYC last night at the Loews E-Walk theater on 42nd street, and I'm thrilled to say this: Best introduction to a superhero, E-V-E-R! This one blows them all away! The only film that comes close to this one is X-Men. The cast is excellent (Wait till you get a load of JK Simmons as Jonah Jameson). The screenplay is truly tops and the effects are, at times, thrilling to behold (the last scene will simply stop your heart for all you Spidey freaks who've been dreaming your whole lives of being able to throw webs and fly through Manhattan).

I was excited to attend the screening, no doubt, but, I'm a hard core film-o-phile so, I was expecting to find major flaws and weaknesses. I'm relieved to say there were none to speak of. At least not in the first hour.

In fact, that first hour was, in my humble estimation, practically flawless. Peter Parker's transformation into Spiderman is thrillingly, deliciously executed. The first hour was one of the most pleasant I've ever spent at an action-movie screening. Fans, you can all relax. Tobey Maguire is really, really great.

The middle did, however, drag for about 15 to 20 minutes or so. Somewhere throughout the scenes where Osborn attacks Aunt May which leads to this whole hospital scene which sort of drags until Osborne finally trains his sights on the l-o-v-e-l-y Kirsten Dunst. I thought that whole bit could have been cut and it wouldn't have hurt the movie one bit.

The battle in Times Square is, I think, a bit uneven also. Osborne dispatches his enemies a little too quickly if you ask me. And after his enemies are wasted, we go get right back to the over-amped story about Spiderman/PP being in love with Kirsten and saving Kirsten's ass. Who the hell knows? Who the hell cares?

And for all of the talk about the effects? Sure, they look a bit cartoonish at times. But, so what? I'll take a good script and a quality director over a few flawed effects any day. Remember "imagination"? Unlike Lucas at least Raimi still trusts his audience has one.

PS: I saw the flick with my 13 year old son, who ab-so-lut-ly LOVED IT!

After the movie, while riding home to Brooklyn in a cab I said, 'I'm going to see it again.' Hoping he would say, yeah, me too! Instead, he replied, 'yeah I'll probably go see it a couple of times with my friends.'

Sad isn't it?

Sadder still is the notion that I'll probably beg him to let me tag along.
