DMANN Reviews GILMORE GIRLS 2.6!!

I am ñ Hercules!!

They’re pretty! They’re funny! They’re bursting with love and contributing to the insane congestion of great shows on Tuesday night! Here’s “Dmann” with tonight’s scoopage:

Presenting Lorelai Gilmore

The title refers to young Lorelai (Rory) Gilmore’s introduction at that upper class east coast rite of passage, the debutante ball, sort of. Not only is Rory to be at the Debutante ball, it's the Daughters of the Daughters of the American Revolution ball, the most waspy sounding of all balls. Why is Rory doing this, the most un Lorelai-ish sounding thing ever? Well, more or less, She wants to, it sounds fun, and she knows it makes her Grandmother happy. Needless to say, Lori (the mom, I know talkbackers hate when I call her that, but that’s what everyone but her own mother calls her…you get the idea)

Dean is taking Rory to the ball, and He’s not happy about this. The running gag about how many episodes of “Battlebots” it will take for Dean to do wear tails, tie and white gloves. It helps that Neil Young wore a tux too. Look for the “A Lady Never...” gags, they rock.

BIG SPOILER (that all the promos gave away): Christopher is back. He’s in Boston for business, and evidently the traditional debutante thing is to have a deb’s father present her for bidding, err dancing, I mean. Christopher is actually horrified, just like Lori, until he thinks about escorting his little girl around the auction floor, err dance floor. The big surprise…HE SHOWS UP. Trust me, this is odd for Christopher. More weirdness, Christopher has a car! No Bike! Lordy wow, it's a VOLVO! He’s got a real office job! WOW! Upon hearing the sound system, (blasting Rammstien, of course, those wacky metalheads) Lori has a smile that can only mean “please, show me the back seat”. He also demonstrates that he can still dance to Sinatra, and is happy being stable, and communicates. Do we sense a trend? Maybe…or maybe not. Christopher has a Sherrie, a Sherrie he lives with.

Rory doesn’t really get along with the other girls. It's not so bad as with Paris at the school. The other girl who befriends her drinks, and obsesses about marrying her escort, Rory obsesses about not falling down the stairs. Dean and Christopher make the day for her. Sometimes I am jealous of that special bond my Father and Sister have, that perfect, non-sexual love. Daddy is always the greatest guy in the world, and daughter is always the princess.

Emily is on the board for the annual Black and White charity ball. Richard Gilmore isn’t feeling well, but he’s in the episode, he doesn’t want to go to the ball, he’s just in an overall bad mood. They are fighting, that’s new… they never fight, at least not when anyone can see. Emily is only happy when she’s fussing over Rory, but who couldn’t see that coming We learn what DAR meetings are all about, gossip, who is getting divorced, who hit whom with an ice sculpture at a cocktail party. Turns out that Richard had an account taken by a younger man, that means he is being phased out. He’s afraid of being useless. He gets up, he puts on a suit, he goes to work, that’s what he does. Lori and Emily’s relationship, as slow as it is happening, continues to develop in a very real way, surrounding this.

There’s a lot of universal themes at work here, finally growing up, the perfect love of a Father and Daughter, the pain of a man becoming useless. All in all, no big spectacular stuff, just an amazing episode in a show where every episode seems to get better than the last

ANOTHER BIG EMBARRASSING SPOILER THING: Lori was on homecoming court! BWAHAHAHAHAQ!

Oh yeah, Luke is STILL having problems with Jesse, getting him to work at the diner. When he finally gets it right….well, I’m not spoiling it, but the boy has found a new way to annoy “Uncle Luke”.
