Butt-Numb-A-Thon 3 - Online Ticket Notifications Sent! First Wave of Standby Ticket Holder Contacted! BNAT-Sold Out!
November 4th BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Update!!!!
Late last night Tim League at the Alamo Drafthouse sent out 12 emails to standby folks. These lucky folks have until midnight on Monday to purchase their tickets! If you are unconfirmed by then, others will get your tickets. SO ACT NOW!!!!
The scheduling of films for BUTT-NUMB-A-THON is continuing. I'm having a lot of fun thinking up new ways to torture all of you. I have just acquired a film print of a movie to show you BNATers at around 8am which will make all of you question your reality far more than either GIANT GILA MONSTER or BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS had in previous years. The special sneak screenings are being worked out and if even half of what I'm working on comes through... Well, it'd suck real bad, so let's not think about that. Ok? Cool. Look for your email from TIM and hopefully you'll be coming!!!
Also this year there will be no seat/numbered seating in advance. There will be a couple of rows marked off for the AICN staff and family. But the rest will be a mad rush. Just kidding. It will be handled orderly. It will be handled in a manner that is sure to anger all... strike that, reverse that, press play.
Older stuff...
Harry here. Alright. Check your emails, check them twice. You are looking for an email from Tim. If you won, you have been given a set of instructions, carry these out ASAP because if this Saturday comes and you have not taken care of that which you must take care of, then your tickets will be used for... Someone else. If you did not get an email, then I wish you the absolute best and hope you are luckier next year. Now I have to finish the preparations for this year's BNAT. Must buy a vast supply of Ex-Lax for Moriarty's Hot Cocoa Cup!
Below was posted at the twilight hours of Wednesday Morning!
Alrighty here's the drill... Harry here and my eyes are seeing double. Tim League just left my house and after hours of hearing the printer print, of folding paper and of filling my bathtub... We finally chose the winners. Tim took those lucky pieces of paper and the rest I am recycling. It is currently 1:25am Austin Time, and I have to be nearing insanity. We went through 4 print cartridges, had to reload the printer about 20 some odd times and I received 4 paper cuts. Tim had these little rubber finger protector things... He's a professional. What now? Well Tim will be emailing folks throughout the night, so if you don't have an email from him by Noon today, I imagine you are probably out of luck.
If you get the email, follow through on it asap, as soon as you are finished, make your plans to come. IF FOR ANY REASON YOU CAN NOT MAKE IT, please contact me asap, so that I can find another person or persons to take your place. Ok? Great.
Did you sign up for Stand by tickets in Austin on Sunday? Tim should be calling some of you tomorrow. If you do not receive a call, it isn't necessarily over for you... it just means that in the first grouping of standby tickets, you didn't make the cut... There will be cancelations, there always is... as these come, you will be notified.
3 days old report below
Hey folks, Harry here... I went down to the Drafthouse North and spent the last 17 1/2 hours sitting on a hard wooden bitch to chat and give support to the folks that had been waiting the longest.
I waited those 17.5 hours not for tickets but because the folks in line, the one brave soul, the Bear of the group from WACO, TEXAS... Well, he wanted to go to BUTT-NUMB-A-THON bad. Real Bad. He got in line on Thursday night. 4 days. He was smiling and laughing and jazzing with everyone in line. He took a couple of little breaks to grab a bit of dinner, a little FROM HELL at the theater... and has never been to BUTT-NUMB-A-THON before. He is, THE MAN.
Others waited 3 days, 2 days, 1 day, 20 hours, 16 hours... and those that waited less... They didn't get tickets.
There's several ways I could further limit tickets... Make the tickets a couple hundred dollars a piece, but that wouldn't allow alot of great regular folks in. Set it up at a much larger theater where you wouldn't have the intimate experience you'd get at the Drafthouse... Finally, BUTT-NUMB-A-THON is quickly becoming a badge of honor for returning attendees, and a trophy for those that have never made it.
Getting into the festival is extremely limited. This isn't about the money in your pocket... How many connections you have... This is about the commitment that you, as a film geek, have to attending. You have to want to go enough to push those other things in life aside a bit to attend. Sure it's just movies... But they are never JUST MOVIES, to folks like me and those that waited in excess of 15 hours to get tickets.
I would have got tickets, I was there long enough, it would have cut off 6 people behind me, but I waited in line, entertained, showed special goodies on the wonderful Apple Laptop of mine.
Do I feel bad for those that joined the line that didn't get in? Yes, terribly so. They will be missing a wonderful event, not through their own fault, not completely... But rather, because others were more afraid of not going. Sometimes by a mere span of 4 minutes.
I watched friends that didn't make the cut off for my own tickets, as I pull out only 50 tickets for the AICN staff, friends and family that attend as part of my birthday and a mutual celebration of our love of film that we've opened up for others to enjoy.
Now are all tickets GONE?
No, there is still a chance to get in. If you sign up via email to get your tickets by writing Owner@drafthouse.Com there is a chance you can win the lottery to be one of the out of towners that can win the opportunity to get your tickets. We are not paying attention to Time Stamping, as I learned last year that can be manipulated. One entry per person for the opportunity to get 2 tickets. I apologize for the delay on this, but the owner of the Drafthouse is out of town at a wedding, and he and I won't be able to begin the process of deciding the winners till he returns Tuesday... God willing, we'll complete that process and you'll get an email back informing you of what is necessary to secure your tickets.
There will be a lot of people emailing Tim... Be sure you send that email ONLY ONCE, more and you are eliminated from the chance.
To everyone in line, it was a pleasure... an absolute pleasure spending this past evening, night, pre-dawn, dawn and afternoon with you today. I wish my legs had been working good enough to visit with everyone in the line, I wish the confusion about line length and cut-off points were made easier to discern, but like the end of WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, there are only so many seats on the ship... I wish it wasn't so, and that it would maintain the sense of intimacy that I adore about the fest.
For those of you on the Standby List for tickets available in Austin, don't loose hope, Tim and I will literally stretch to the absolute limit that the fire marshall will allow for us to squeeze everyone in. I hope you enjoy the show. For those still waiting to hear, hopefully by the close of Tuesday/Wednesday we'll have the final word out. For standbys locally, as cancellations and extra seats are made available, you will be getting called. Quite a few got in last year. BEST OF LUCK!
Harry
Moriarty here. I am working around the clock right now on a special project at the Labs, sleeping very little, and somehow tonight I managed to finally get to sleep. I think I'd been under for about an hour when my phone rang. Like an idiot, I answered it. Harry and what sounded like a drunken mob of soccer hooligans began screaming at me about updating the site and the Alamo Drafthouse and lines and midgets and anthrax and all sorts of madness.
As best I can gather, they wanted me to log onto AICN (which I've done), update the BNAT story (which I'm doing), and tell anyone who is still planning to head down to join the line...
... DON'T BOTHER!!
There is no room at the inn, so to speak. We's all full up. The line is out of control and way too long, and the only hope you've got if you're not already in line is to write in and win the e-mail lottery system described below.
As Charlton Heston would say, "IT'S A MADHOUSE!!"
Now I'm going back to sleep. Make the fat man stop bothering me. Please, mommy, please...

Hey folks, Harry here... This is a brief status report about "The Line" for BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Tickets. The line began forming early Friday Afternoon. I stopped by the Drafthouse to go see FROM HELL and to grab a lite salad, when much to my shock I beheld the image of 3 folks in line for Tickets... During my stay in the White Chapel District of the Drafthouse, 2 more folks joined the line... They are reading, chatting and enjoying the nice Austin air. As I was talking with the group of REEL GEEKS, the cook came out of the Drafthouse to offer them some free Pizza!!! Not that this will be a regular occurance, but hey man... Free Pizza is a possible bonus opportunity. One of the girls in line started asking me how FROM HELL compared to Alan Moore's Comic, and the whole group and I engaged in banter about the genre of JACK THE RIPPER movies... Quite a wonderful lot of folks... Wish my legs were working so I could reasonably join them... I'm probably going to be stopping by tomorrow night with some audio/visual surprises that will wake them up I guarantee that! Hehehehe... Till tomorrow's report this is Harry letting you know... 10 tickets are accounted for in that line thus far...
Hey folks, Harry here...
This Sunday (October 21st) at 12 Noon Tickets Go On Sale... Ok, here's how it goes down... here are the rules, the ways and the hows about getting those magical tickets.
As I do every year, half the tickets are available here in Austin. The other half are made available via you folks online.
You want to get your tickets in person here in Austin. Here's what is going on. First, the tickets will NOT be on sale at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown. They will be for sale at Alamo Drafthouse North - (2700 West Anderson Lane - 512 - 476 - 1320) Why? We have heard from many geeks/fans/radical extremists that have issued threats to both Tim League (owner of the Drafthouse) and Me (Harry Knowles) that they were planning on camping out for tickets this year based upon their anticipation for rumored films that could possibly (or not) be playing. Tim and I do not know if these people are indeed serious about this, but in case they are, the Alamo North is a better camping ground for this sort of radical behavior. If you are planning on doing this, please co-operate with the Alamo North staff and be cordial and nice. They are nice people, not just employees. Ok?
Now... You online folks. You remember the hell that was last year. The first -email first get program. This year, well... here ya go. From Sunday at Noon (Central Standard Time) to Tuesday at Noon (Central Standard Time) Tim will be accepting emails at :
Tuesday... around Late Afternoon, Tim will be returning from a wedding in an undisclosed state in case one of you were contemplating kidnapping him and forcing him to give you tickets. He will come directly to Geek Headquarters where he and I will print out the names, email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses of everyone that submitted to win tickets. We will fold up these pieces of paper into a hat or a swimming pool depending on size of responses, then we will pick totally at random the various winners. Shortly thereafter, this list of amazingly lucky winners will receive an email Tuesday night... They will have 48 hours to buy their tickets via a to be disclosed secret deal which will be revealed in the email.
RULES FOR TICKETS THIS YEAR
1. Each person can get a ticket for them and one other. Meaning two tickets per person (MAX)
2. If Tim receives multiple emails from the same address, this person will be eliminated from the lottery.
3. Each person in line in Austin represents themselves plus that one extra ticket they can buy. You can not hold a spot for your 5 lazy friends that plan on joining you at the last minute to get a block of 10 tickets. If you try this and we receive a single complaint about this sort of thing... You will be eliminated from the line.
4. I will be Driving by the Alamo North on Friday and Saturday and Sunday to see if any of you are there. I will not accept bribes (unless they are beautiful and willing), plus I will not confirm or deny the titles of any films which you may or may not think will be playing. Suffice to say, I think I'm going to have a very good 30th Birthday.
5. Riots at Drafthouse North WILL BE MET with the Firehose!
6. Nudity is discouraged at the Drafthouse North location, as a cold front has come through Austin and I don't care how sick you get, if you get sick and can't be there Sunday at Noon you are royally fucked.
7. Leaving the line to get food, rest, new clothes, etc... It is a good idea to have representation for your spot in line at all times, lest others get upset. However, if you can reasonably convince the people behind you and in front of you that the impending disaster in your pants would ruin their line experience, you can leave on their descretion.
8. Tickets are $10 for regular seats and $25 for seats on those lush soft leather couches!!! But only a pussy would sit there!!!
18 is generally the age limit for folks to come... HOWEVER, exceptions can be made and have been made in the past. Write me or Tim at the above address for consideration.
Click on the below images to buy EXCLUSIVE Butt-NUMB-A-Thon Merchandize.... shirts, hats, boxer shorts, mugs, etc... Available ONLY ON LINE!!! All money from these sales are sponsoring AICN folks' travel to BNAT. So Be Cool And Do It!
Last year, people began getting in line in the primordial hours of the morning.... ie 1-2am.... However, tickets sold out extremely fast and most of those that had gotten in line were left without tickets. It was from these people that the threat of 'camping' came from. Many folks from the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio regions have also been making this threat. SO... I have no idea at all what is going to happen at the Alamo Drafthouse North this weekend, but I'll check by once a day and give you all updates. Hell, there might be people there now as far as I know
See You on December 8th & 9th... hopefully!!!!

Hey Folks, Harry Here...
As I have done these past two years around this time I have announced the impending BUTT-NUMB-A-THON. For those unfamiliar with this event, it is a 24 hour (at least) film festival with all funds raised by the event going towards an organization called THE SATURDAY MORNING FILM CLUB FOR KIDS! This is an organization that I founded with Tim League of the Alamo Drafthouse, as a 100% free film screening series for children in the central Texas region to discover vintage films on the big screen! We do this in conjunction with BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS, THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE and THE AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY.
In the past year alone we have screened THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, MAD MONSTER PARTY, EXPLORERS, PRINCE VALIANT, THE GOLDEN STALLION, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, JASON & THE ARGONAUTS, NEVER A DULL MOMENT, George Pal's DOC SAVAGE, INFRA MAN and much more! In addition to features, we screen shorts, cartoons and fun little mini-films like old Shirley Temple shorts, OUR GANG films, black & white Mickey Mouse Cartoons, old ABBOTT & COSTELLO toons, BETTY BOOP and many others! In the coming months we'll be screening WIZARD OF OZ, KING KONG, THE GREEN SLIME and much more!!! The purpose of the programs is to give the children a context for the films that their parents, grandparents and even Great Grandparents grew up with as kids! To introduce them to the grand tradition of film, how they were made and how they themselves can make films! And all of this is made possible by the money we raise with:
BUTT-NUMB-A-THON!!!

What is BUTT-NUMB-A-THON? The greatest film geek event in the world. The focus of this 24 hour event is to celebrate film in all its forms! In advance of the film festival you will never know what is going to be showing, who may be arriving as a special guest or if you'll ever see the sun again!!! The purpose of all this is to let your mind wander and wonder about what it is that I have in store for you!
In the past our special guests have been Vin Diesel, Steven Railsback, director Guillermo Del Toro and many others. We've had screenwriters, directors and producers show up just to attend the event for themselves... and of course there is the disguised in human form cast of characters from behind the scenes of AIN'T IT COOL NEWS! And the greatest guests of all... YOU and a slue of TalkBackers!
We've had premieres of MAGNOLIA, PITCH BLACK, SNATCH, ED GEIN, THE GIFT and more. We've had secret screenings of somethings that even now I can not mention. AND then my favorite part has been the unveiling of older films... The sort of movies that never find themselves on the big screen... Flicks like WONDERBAR, SEA WOLF, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, SONG OF THE SOUTH, FADE TO BLACK, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, THE GIANT GILA MONSTER, DESTINATION MARS, FRITZ THE CAT, BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS, CALLING ALL GIRLS, DRACULA'S DAUGHTERS, THE HOBBIT, SHOGUN ASSASSIN and more! And then there's the more modern joy like TRON, ROBOCOP and SIX STRING SAMURAI!!! Truly you will never know what to expect at BUTT-NUMB-A-THON it seems!
So what can you expect this year? Quite frankly this year is shaping up to be far better than either of the previous 2 years... How is that possible? Ya know the saying 3rd one's the charm? Well this BUTT-NUMB-A-THON I will be turning 30... and I am determined to throw the best possible film event I can imagine... I began securing some of these films... BEFORE THEY EVEN STARTED PRODUCTION!!! And I'm so incredibly excited about the event this year... everything seems to be coming together brilliantly... As you can see by the Cartuna Poster Art at the Top... even the poster came along far better than I could imagine...
So you want details? Well, like both of the previous years half of the available tickets will be sold here in Austin and the other half to AICN readers from around the country and world. Tickets will be going on sale OCTOBER 21st. The details of when and how will be divulged later, keep your eyes peeled here for the nitty gritty!
BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 3 will take place at the ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE here in Austin, Texas on Saturday, December 8th through Sunday, December 9th! Again the specifics will be held for the next update!
Lastly, inspired by Cartuna's Utterly Unbelievably Cool BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 3 Art, we are offering T-shirts, baseball caps, boxer-shorts, muscle shirts, Tote bags, sweatshirts, ladies' Ts, coffee mugs, mousepads with a variety of designs... CLICK HERE TO STOCK UP AND BROWSE!!! These proceeds will be going to help offset the cost in bringing in some of the AICN Crew to the event!
