Love this film. Harry hit the diode on the head when he said "Don't let this film be full of teenagers".That was what was so cool about the first one. Jeff Bridges was playing the guy who didn't wanna grow up. Frankly, I relate. He has to come back for the sequel, or I won't go see it. In fact, I'll run around to Lisberger's house, and, in my best MCP voice, I'll say "STOP! YOU REALISE i CAN'T ALLOW THIS!"

The original Tron was cool, as it succeeded at providing an original conversion from the arcade aesthetic to the big screen. Never mind the story, and why are people always bitchin' bout plot anyway- in this case that obviously wasn't the big concern here. Tron's look was totally original and stood out in its time and still does. There's no other movie that looks like it. Nowadays however, with every movie looking like a computer game (and every computer game increasingly playing like a movie) they'll have to come up with a very bold and unorthodox form to make this worth their while. I stand reserved, very.

"Something that I'm really curious about is what does a program look like that was worked on by tons of people. Like say, WINDOWS 2000? I mean, if a program has the soul of its creator, and multiple people created it, is it a genetic milkshake of that person, schizophrenic? What? " I guess that question was already answered in the first film - the MCP is such an entity. Hence the cool line: "no Programmer created me, I'm worth millions of their man-hours!"

Bridges was fabulous in Tron, although much of the rest of the movie was somewhat heavy handed with its message and still forgetable overall. Still, I'd be interested in seeing what current CGI could make out this flick. Here's to hoping.

Fie! on you nabobs who dis on Tron. The movie works great as a silent film, like Metropolis. 1) Turn down volume 2) Skip past 'real world' sequences on DVD (those ARE lame, I confess) 3) Put on some futuristic music (I recommend Stereolab's "Dots and Loops," or any recent Radiohead) 4) PACK ONE UP!

Hey, movies don't have to change the world or enlighten every microbe in the universe to be considered great. Tron was an original and fun idea that went well with a tub of popcorn during a matinee. As for the sequel, I hope Disney gives him the green light. I can't wait to see it! I'm so happy that they're coming out with a new dvd release. Geesh, as it been 20 years already?

OK, the DVD MUST have all the stuff from the laserdisk, plus hi-res 3d models of all the TRON vehicles, lot of cool stuff for the PC, and either an isolated score or let Wendy relase the CD of the music. I love the idea of playing lightcycles online against other fans (even though I suck and will die fast every time). It would be nice to have a tank game (Space Paranoids) and other TRON games to play too. I hope that if they do a TRON 2.0, that they aim it at us Gen-X'ers who love the first one and not make it a silly kid movie. Wendy Carlos MUST do the soundtrack and someone from the first movie should be there, even it it's just the MCP. Tron was way ahead of it's time, if it came out today, people would think it was a statement against Microsoft (Encom=MS, WinXp=MPC, TRON=Linux?) The movie didn't come out and state that the setting was 20 years in advance, but it sure seems that way, and I would call it the sci-fi movie that was MOST accurate about the future. Videogame violence, Microsoft's abuse of power, hackers, filesharing, the web, spyware, viruses, all these and more can be jumping off points for plot of TRON 2.0
Right, Indie films don't look so good.

It's Disney. In the event that this gets made there will be at LEAST one kid in this, if not a of snotty teenage "hackers" who look nothing like the less-photogenic real deal. If this were Miramax, Dimension, or even Touchstone, it might have a bit of real edge to it. But if it's a Walt Disney picture, it will be a mild PG at best and be about as thought-provoking as a bowl of Raisin Bran. Disney stopped taking chances after all the chances bombed (Black Hole, Tron, Flight of the Navigator) because at heart, since Walt was de-rezzed, they're just bean counters riding a brand name...don't shoot the messenger.

Untested technology being pushed to the edge of its capabilities to do a movie that hadn't been attempted before. It rocked! What kind of stones does it take to try to do a feature film with 8 bit graphics? Plot problems? It made a hell of a lot more sense than the incomprehensible mess that was ATLANTIS. It deserves a great transfer and if there's a direct to video sequel, so much the better.

There are several reasons why I can't be...Lawnmower Man 1 & 2, Virtuality, Strange Days, and even that ghastly Michael Crichton novel turned movie, Disclosure. What do these movies have in common with TRON? Well, all were about the cyberspace revolution and involved either humans immersed in cyberspace or some cybernetic, omnipotent entity who is able to exist in the real world. TRON was original for its day, and good God Allmighty do I want this sequal to be something worth doing, but I am afraid that the subject matter is now little more than a dead horse that is still being beaten to bits. Like a previous Talk Backer stated this idea is as obsolete as Commodore 64, Atari, Apple IIe, and many other 80's technological conveniences.

As much as I loved the original, and as much as I'd love to see a faithful, well-done sequel, there's just too much that could go wrong with this production. I have a feeling the right people for this would pass it up, not take it seriously, and we would end up with something absolutely devoid of anything meaningful. If not on the right path, we could end up with Lawnmower Man 2. Yuk! Actually Lawnmower Man 1 would've probably been yuk enough to demonstrate my point, but I just wanted to illustrate how extremely yukful this whole thing could get. Maybe I should have cut down on some of the yuks.

"Slipstream" was a cool sci-fi flick, although I thought they've could of done a lot more with it. Sure Lisberger is not a God, but I think he turned in two quality science fiction films. Come one, people. I have fond memories of TRON, too, but it was not a great movie. Have you actually seen it in the past ten years? It may have seemed great when we were kids, but it's really only okay, beordering on pretty good. It's fascinating to me that people make such a big deal out of movies like TRON and THE GOONIES. It makes me wonder if 20 years from now I'll be reading people on the internet making references to the "God" who directed TOMB RAIDER or THE MUMMY RETURNS. That's the level of movie we're dealing with here, guys. To think otherwise is just pure denial. That's not to bash TRON, which was fun on the same level that TOMB RAIDER and THE MUMMY RETURNS were. But to build it to soemthing more than that is embarrasing.

And I'm really looking forward to seeing it. Tron has always been special to me, a kid who became a teenager about the time "defender" and "pacman" were the new big things in the video arcade. A couple years ago I recreated a light cycle using a 3d rendering program and duplicated the lightcycles scene from the movie on my computer, only mine looked a little better because I had reflections and textures. I did it out of love, and for something to show off to my friends. Since I can do that on my little ol pentium 200, think of what they can do today. Of course the trick is not to go for super realism like final fantasy but rather to create a unique "inside the computer" environment that can't possibly be mistaken for the real world but looks so cool you can't take your eyes off it. Anyway it's going to be cool, jeff bridges or no. And I can't stop thinking of him playing the psycho with the speech impediment in "the vanishing". ungry?

I still my vinyl copy of the soundtrack, and for the age I was at that time, it's in primo condition. I wrote Disney and asked if they were EVER gonna release a CD of the music. They said no, due to legal matters. I asked if I could burn my album to a disc for myself, and they said "Be our guest." I did some tweaking with a BBE Maximizer and a equalizer with lotsa really pretty lights on it, and PRESTO! A fine quality recording, considering the vinyl source... Flash forward several months later: www.wendycarlos.com posts how to bake yer old studio tapes that have been sitting in a warehouse for ten years! TRON is in fine condition. Now if only the Disney suits will stop bitching about points. Y'know, screw it! I'm selling my PC's and getting a high-powered Mac and some software and make the damned sequel myself! Long live the Independents! Financial death to the suits! My rant is done. Thank you...

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!??????? With the vast wealth of Sci-fi literature out there would anyone picked Tron for a redux?? DOn't get me wrong. I loved the original and I have both the Video and the DVD. I watched it one day last summer and I realized the nostalgia aside, it was not all that great. What added to Tron's appeal was that it was the first of its kind, much like Final Fantasy is first of a new breed, not that it was cinematic greatness. Tron 2.0 could conceivably open (and compete with) Matrix 3 or whatever that year's scifi film will be, and it's going to be like your 95yr old grandfather going to hang out with your teenager and his friends, dressed in baggy Tomy Hilfigher gear sporting a tongue stud. This site is the first place I've heard of the Tron Sequel but as far as the possible plot goes, anyone who has seen the Canadian CG cartoon Reboot (a very good effort, and probably the most direct decendent of the Original Tron) has an idea of what to expect!

Given the current plot summary, I think TRON 2.0 will stink. A hacker trying to pull off the "Ultimate Hack", yawn. This movie will almost certainly be a dog. It is unfortunate that out in Hollywood has "type cast" technology stories. The original TRON showed that even Disney could bring up some astoundingly complex issues with a simple storyline. It was a good, if undervalued film. The special effects work was ground-breaking (except for the grid bugs animation and the "Giant" Dumont). The characters, both User and Program, were interesting. It was an intriguing fusion of SF, Fantasy, Gladiator Movie, and Adventure Thriller. It was the second time that Disney tried to make a "high brow" movie (the first failed attempt was THE BLACK HOLE) dealing with the great themes: Philosophy, Religion, the Nature of Reality, the Quest for Trancendance, and the consequences of Man as a God-like creator. It was precient in some of its implicit preditions: cyberspace, the popularity of1st person 3D games, first use of the term "Software Engineer" (to my knowledge), and genetic/darwinian programing. It even had some very funny insider humor ("Why did I have to write so many tank programs?!?"). It did a good job of trying to explain the more fantastic elements of the story with hard science explainations. One example: the "laser scanner" transported Flynn into the GameGrid by scanning him and suspending his atoms inside the beam path. As far as I know, scientists didn't get around to experimenting with lasers for particle containment until the mid 90's. I can understand why most people didn't and don't like TRON. I think I understand why TRON is now more popular. I also think I understand why Disney wants to do a TRON sequel now. What I don't understand, is why they don't get good writers and a good story for TRON 2.0. After all, it costs no more (and sometimes much less) to produce a really GOOD story as it does to make a really BAD story. TRON 2.0 will be flashier than the original, but is going to be a cheap Disney-esque fusion of THE MATRIX and HACKERS. Blech. ***END OF LINE
