How is that first report about Burton news????? Didn't every single one of us know about Superman for a LONG time, not to mention about the Catwoman project. Anyway, Tim Burton doing "Geek Love"? Hmmm...it could work, but it seems like "Geek Love" would be a hell of difficult book to make into a sellable movie. Oh, and Harry, did you REALLY like "Mars Attacks"?? Come on, be honest...

Beetlejuice 2? Who wants to see that? 1 was good, but it's like doing Casablanca 2 or Spartacus 2. Superman lives? I'm sorry, but I don't really care for a "hero" dressed in colors that hurt my eyes and who's secret identity is "hidden" behind GLASSES!! Are they all dumb or just blind? I mean, my mother wouldn't recognize me without glasses, right... BULLSHIT! Superman is dead. Leave him alone. As for Planet Of The Apes: I don't feel too good about this. It is at least an unnecessary movie. But still it could be cool....

I really hope Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes isn't just good but brilliant. Because it's going to take an especially fantastic film to redeem the garbage we've just been through... I mean, what the hell is going on?! What is the matter with Holylwood? They have all this money but their brains are the size of peanuts. They thought Pearl Harbour would sweep away audiences???

I loved, loved, loved that book. Burton would be okay with it. It was pretty quirky and definitely could be cool with Burton's fun skew on things, but I would love to see David Lynch tackle this one. A subtle mix of drugs, freaks, and love. Lynch would show this as a realistic story with surrealistic characters. I think Burton might Nightmare- Before-Christmas-this one up and make it cartoony. Lets see some of the depraved Lynchian freaks from the Elephant Man. Another book worth reading is Toplin by Michael MacDowell. He co-wrote Beetlejuice with Burton. That is one sick and twisted read. Good stuff.

(sorry for the double-post, ouch, i guess it does happen to the best AND worst of us)--------I really really find Tim Burton overrated. To me, he's only done two GREAT films: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Ed Wood(Ed Wood being an achivement more on screenwriting than actual direction IMHO). Other than that? Just visually awesome narrative messes. He's the Pageant Filmmaker to a "T". He gets carried away with the look of his films, and the story goes to the backseat. He really has a bit of trouble compressing narrative. Take for example, Sleepy Hollow. The first half was showed what promise this film had. Then as it went on, it became a boring, standard, formulaic conspircy tale. YAWN....Thats enough tho. i can't diss him too badly. look at his girlfriend. he's doing something right. let's hope he can stop being the Pat Boone to Terry Gilliam(or David Lynch)'s Little Richard....P.S. You want a director who can resurrect the Superman Franchise and work well with Jon Peters? Hire Michael Fucking Mann. He'll invert the superhero persona quite well. Cast Jeffery Wigand to boot and we got something brewing.....'nuff said

Burton would be good, but I would much prefer Fincher handle it. It has the wry and synical angle that was slightly overdone in Fight Club. Burton would make the freaks look like freaks, and not the characters they really were...

Plus, what he could do with those landscapes would probably be outstanding. Oz is too much of a classis to get anything more than an NSYNC, lame-ass retelling... Alice is already in the works.

Did anybody else find that reference in the trailer of P.O.T.A. to be a bit odd? Are they referencing Batman because it's Burton's most action-like film? The action sucked my ass hole. Batman was made of molasses, and the Batwing was shot down by a six-shooter when the Batmobile can take multiple mortar fire. He's one of the greatest martial artists of all time, yet a simple goon wipes the floor with him, before falling down the shaft of the cathedral. I don't believe I've ever seen a trailer for any of Tim Burton's movies where they have to give another movie he's done just so you know who he is. It's usually just: "From director Tim Burton...". I'm not really holding a torch for Planet of the Apes. I don't believe it will satisfy action, OR Sci-Fi fans...of course I only get this from my feelings of the trailer. OH, and did anybody else see Paula Abdul as one of the lead female apes? I guess the make-up department got a little rest from having to do HER up...she is one heinous bitch...and Tim Burton dropped the Superman thing almost a fuckin year ago. We've had a myriad of directors approaching or being approached by the project since then. It WILL be made. They're just being smart about it. Guy Pearce for Superman!!!!!!

Burton Takes Risks.
by Buzz Maverik
Jul 16th, 2001
09:27:16 AM
The thing with taking a risk is that the probability for success gets lower and lower. Burton has courage whereas a good 99 percent of Hollywood are cowards, even though they go around acting like badasses. What I love about Burton is that if he sets out to make a movie based on 1960s trading cards, the movie looks like 1960s trading cards. No story, but trading cards don't really have stories (and if you know of any that do, don't tell me about 'em, I don't wanna know!). Lately, he's finally gotten that morbid cartoony look out of his system -- now that everyone in Hollywood has figured out how to do it-- and his movies are starting to look different, i.e. the bright, garish MARS ATTACKS, the British horror look of SLEEPY HOLLOW (which he could have been lazy and done his goth-toon thing but didn't), and a real, sci-fi action look to the PLANET O' THE MONKEYS trailers. All of the projects metioned in the article are all things that have been attached to Burton for-fucking-ever. Spielberg is about the only director that ever actually makes all the movies that he says he will. I hope Burton will suprise us.

I'm hoping JP III, POTA, and RUsh Hour 2 are at least three stars fun. Mummy Returns was disspointing, Pearl Harbor was disspointing, Tomb Raider was disspointing...hell A Knight's Tale, not a great movie, delievered much better. But where's The Face/Off's? The Rocks? The Heats? Even the Con Airs? Saving Private Ryan's? Where's anything. Dear lord. Gladiator was the last kickass movie I saw in the theater, I think. Next summer will be better, I hope. I always say that but look, Matrix 2, Star Wars, Spiderman, etc...and the movies at the end of this year look great. LOTR, Harry Potter, Windtalkers, Ali, yada yada. But man...this summer.

I love the original film, I love most of what Burtons created , but together , him remaking{reimagining!} the POTA world , is causing me a conflict.I just don't feel he's right for the job and I'm getting a *funny* feeling from watching the trailer..Plus he always seems to go down hill , when helming a big budget commercial movie.Alsol either the guys who put this trailer together, are hiding all the good stuff, from us , or this film isn't going to live up to anyone's dreams. It's only the fact that Tim Burton's name is associated with it , thats giving me any hope at all.The movie looks murky , appears to be some sort of Battlefield Earth /congo hybrid and though I usually love everything Tim and Rick Baker do , both the make-up and production design , are some of the ugliest I've ever seen.{H.Boneham Carters make-up alone is enough to ruin this film}Has anyone read the Tim Burton interview in Playboy mag this month? He didn't sound so sure he'd made a good film himself{He keeps mentioning that the budget ,was cut unmercifully}That coupled with no previews and the film due for release in a week , doesn'seem too good.Worse still this summers crop of films have been so weak , that everyone is now pinning their hopes for a fun ol' time at the cinema on POTA!

His best and most emotional and well-acted film wasn't supported by the fan-boy crowd and no-one else went to see it either. So, he returned to making his visually stunning fantasies but realllllly struck out with Mars Attacks! Thankfully Sleepy Hollow was miles better but why do all these films (Mars, Sleepy, POTA) on known properties and characters. Just like Batman was overrated, I think when he sticks to more original product like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas that he makes better films.

Isn't there supposedly this fantastic script for a film called Sherlock Holmes VS. Dracula? I seem to remember reading about it a year ago (or less) on AICN. To me, this seems like a perfect property for Tim Burton to rescue. Tim Burton was born to direct horror and Sleepy Hollow is his only real stab at the real thing. (Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands only skirt around horror. They all play it for laughs.) I'd love for Burton to pick up his Hammer and give us another horror flick. Sherlock Holmes VS. Dracula would be a good start.

David Lynch did own (or tried to buy) the rights to this already. This was several years ago, but its better suited for his dark touch than Burtons "Cant help but be cute" hands. Burton is a guy who had a chance to be dark and scary with Sleepy Hollow and he showed that he couldnt pull it off, there must be too much Disney animator blood in his genes. To do the novel any justice, Burton should hand the project to someone like Lynch.

The show's motif is a little on the cute J-pop side, but when you think about, those three characters are just as much "freaks" as the rest of Burton's creations...they're just freakish looking in a cute way. Curious as to what it is? Well, he has a Vincent Price interview film he has yet to secure all the rights to release yet, then the Lisa Marie/pet project he has been planning, which if Old Monkey is correct is none other than THE CORPSE BRIDE. This is one of those old Grimm-like fairy tales with a message, or moral. It happens to be a great story that Tim would be perfectly suited for based on his work on SLEEPY HOLLOW and BEETLEJUICE alone. Look up the story on any search engine, it could be Burton's next 'personal' film after EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and anohter one of his best.

This is due largely to Burton's eye (and Depp's performance). All the atmosphere and the visual wink/homages to the original cartoon were wonderful. For all of Burton's faults, he's a great properties director, as he has tremendous respect for source material and fan expectations. That's why he was the perfect choice for Planet of the Apes, and here's hoping he did it justice. So if we're playing the fan-wishing game, since Burton has a creepily wonderful eye, a talent with large budgets, good with actors, and excellent with franchises and previously established characters, I say he should do James Bond 20!

And if that happens, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's legacy will be destroyed once and for all. Burton's just as bad for Superman as Jon Peters, and the fans have made it crystal clear that they DON'T want either Peters orBurton on the project. So why can't this disgusting, untalented pile of slime get the hint and stop circling Superman like a vulture about to move in for the kill? Didn't he get the hint last time that the fans don't want him touching this character? Especially since he'd just defile everything that makes Supermana goodcharacter and remake him in the sametired, self-congratulatory "look at how briiliant my plotless ghoulish and weird set design films are" style that he blatantly refuses to evolve out of? I'm definitely looking forward to this "reimagining" of POTA. I just watched the original last night (again!) and from what I've seen in the trailers, it looks like Burton respects the original while injecting it with his own style. The apes look great and this film's got a much bigger scope. Hopefully the story and script will be up to par. That's usually Burton's main weakness. This movie's gotta kick ass, this summer has pretty much sucked, except for maybe Shrek.

Tim Burton is a good director. I have enjoyed all his films. He does have a good eye and people should stop trying to compare him to other directors. They and he are different so its useless to compare. Why say his films arnt Lynchian enough. Thats what david Lynch is for. Go and watch his films as well. Its not like we are spoiled for choice. He does have a strong visual style. I saw a load of his drawings for the Batman films and I think he does brilliant illustrations. His Catwoman was superb. Like a naughty Ronald Searl St Trinian. My fave was the Nightmare befor Xmas. We all know what was wrong with the Batman films. Looking back I think the second film is more satisfying, especially compared to Shitmaker turning it into neon Gayman. Tims version was ok although we all knew they were some way off mark. Unfortunately the tossers in the big offices can only see the toy marketing possibilities. remember all the spluttering at the Penguin... and what was that about Supeman not wearing a cape etc. Perhaps he should look like Ronald McFuckwit and have done with it. Theres an Idea .... A Macdonalds movie with SuperRonald McDonald. I bet some gewhizz is reading this and the cogs are turning "why didnt we think of this before!!" Perfect Synergy. Advertising and marketing in harmony. With any luck they with get Nick Cage for the part and he will demolish a million big macs in method mode before trying to leap a tall building, whilst serving the whole world a big mac. Is it a bird? is it a plane? Dyou want fries wit dat! crash n burn man. crash n burn.

Tim Burton is not the man for Superman. What started off as an incredibly fasinating visual movement, has failed to progress. Yes, some of the art direction is incredible, but I am ready for something else from him. Tim Burton's perspective on Batman, his perspective on Sleepy Hollow, perspective on Planet of the Apes, while unique ends up as a different movie in the same world. BUT THIS MUST BE SAID OF ALL THINGS!!!! Listen up directors and future directors. I saw a trailer this weekend for POTA where one ape says, "can't we all just get along?" For the love of god, why must directors do this????!!! If you went through all the trouble to create this world and bring me out of myself into your story, why bring me back with references of popular culture or current events. TPM Episode 1. Had little ET's walking in the backround. Ships in the junkyard from bladerunner. Don't do that sh*t! What if they met a look alike Elvis in the canteena in StarWars? Or Indiana Jones gave a reference to some popular music group of the 80's? I don't need any in-jokes. All they do is date the movie and take you out of the story. But back to the topic at hand. Tim is not the man for Supes. We don't need an alternate abstract conjuring of Superman's world. Let's keep it simple and just tell a good story. Other than that, as far as I'm concerned he's welcome to view any other story in his own warped (although interesting) world.
The Ultimate Tim Burton Project!!!!

First off I would have to say that Tim Burton is one of a few gods. The other being Gary Oldman. He's visual sense is not of this world and there isn't a director out there that can even come close to creating anything as visually stunning and deep as Tim Burton has done in his career as a Director. And since we're on the subject of "what would be the ultimate Burton project?".....here you go.....and if anyone thinks otherwise...please...let's talk. Let's say Mr. Burton took one of the most amazing stories of all time and visually recreated this story through his eyes and put it on that beautiful silver screen.... And let's say that story was "Alice in Wonderland." Could you fucking imagine???!!! This was a story way before it's time and since Tim Burton was way ahead of his time (Vincent, Frankenweenie, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare before Christmas)...he would be perfect for this project. No revamping is needed on this beautifully twisted tale. All Burton needs to do is take this story and re-create it through his own eyes..... enough said.

I can feel it in my balls... Just no way will this film match, or even approach the original - which kinda makes the whole endeavor futile, as a REMAKE, update, rip-off.. whatever you wanna call it, must be BETTER than the original to validate its existence, IMO. Hope I'm wrong about it sucking, tho. It also should've been much closer to Boulles's novel. Apes with TECH would kick ass! Btw, I agree with that guy below who talked about American McGee's Alice. It'd be perfect for Burton. A really wacky and twisted concept. Alice is one sadistic bitch in that... never smiles, loves to kill. Yeah, baby!
One of the Best Directors Today: Tim Burton
by Electric_Monk

Tim Burton has proven that he is one of the most innovative directors since Alfred Hitchcock. And that maybe his problem. What Burton has to do, is make a commerically viable film, so he can do his quirky stuff, like many of the above mentioned material. I think, though, the Superman film is not for him, unless it was really freaky -but that would upset die hard Superman fans. A sequel to Beetlejuice would be great, but it would cost a crap load of money. As for Geek Love, it is a good book, and it would make a good film, but it won't make any money. It would be a cult film, and Hollywood does not make that type of cult films anymore. The investors would not like the idea that they will not make any money. Burton, in becoming popular, has lost his ability to make the films that he first started him off. Its not his fault, per se, but that is the whole truth of making movies, these days.

Dracula and Sherlock Holmes sounds good - whoever directs (except for Bay and Shitmaker). Alice sounds good especially after the computer game. But the one film I would like to see is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Perfik! Also spot on about Gary Oldman - THE best actor of his generation (is that too bombastic?) Did you get Nil by Mouth in America? Also love the Steamboat Harry at the top.

Personally, I'd love if it did. I think he's the perfect director for it. It could be a better version of Sleepy Hollow (which I loved, but realize isn't great.) Either that or Stephen Sommers, since the project has reportedly taken a more "Mummy"-type adventure turn. But this project is squared away in the squirrly head of Chris Columbus. Home Alone-Chris Columbus. Now, I'm not saying he couldn't pull it off. Hell, the Harry Potter trailer alone has suddenly made hope spring from the tiny seed laying dormant. But I'd feel much better if it were in Burton's hands, knowing it would more than likely be a take no prisoners kind of film without forced dumb-down by the studio to make sure it hits a large PG-13 audience and opens on a gazillion screens. In any case, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a stupendous suggestion since he can't pick up S vs.D. I just wish he'd drop the whole Superman thing and pass it on to someone that will make a Superman movie. How about Bruce Timm and Paul Dini from the Animated series? To tell the truth, I thought their tale of Superman's origin was far better told than the live-action film. Every character was on target and aside from a brief appearance by Bilbo (who actually worked) there were no horrible comic-relief characters. How about Rodriguez after seeing what he did on Spy Kids? But I'm sorry, Burton is all wrong for Superman. It's been appearent ever since he talked about Superman's "murderous side" and cast *ptui* Nic Cage as big blue. Superman is my favorite comic character. I just want to see him done right.

There was a tb here on AICN back during the end of June listed as Wes Craven's Dark Wonderland or something similar. I think Burton would do a better job on it though as he does weird sooo well. I liked Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, and Batman. Maybe I should finally watch Ed Wood. I wonder what type of twist he will add to POTA? Ah well, guess I'll just have to wait and see with everyone else.

Sure he's a whore for style over substance and yes he has had seemingly more misses than hits in his 16 year career. When I was in High School all us pretentious little AV club fucks thought he was such a genius. Ah, to be young and pretentious again. But he has done some great stuff. SLEEPY HOLLOW proved once and for all that Burton does indeed know his way around a good action sequence. BEETLEJUICE will always be his best as far as I'm concerned. And while Batman & Batman Returns did indeed have their flaws they also had their highs as well like Pheifer's Catwoman and lines like "Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moon light?". "But why, Comedian?" "Why is this pase dinosour of pretentious late 80's / early 90's doom alienation'your hero'?" you're all now asking. Well kids, BECAUSE HE GOES HOME EVERY NIGHT AND GET'S TO FUCK LISA MARIE'S BRAINS OUT!!!! HOW?!? WHY?!? SHE CAN'T BE REAL?!?HOW DOES HE KEEP HER?!? IS SHE AN AMNESIA CASE?!? IS IT BRAINWASHING?!?!HYPNOSIS?!?!MI ND CONTROL?!? IS SHE REALLY A ROBOT?!?! YES, THAT'S IT!! A ROBOT?!?! I KNEW IT!! I'M ONTO TO YOU, BURTON! And I will tell the whole world the sick secrets of you and your kinky wind up doll unless you hand her over(0r at least her blueprints) to me IMMEDIATELY!!! I know you were buddies with Vincent Price before his death. And everyone know that Vincent Price was Dr. Goldfoot. And I'm sure you only became chummy with him so you could get into that Bikini factory and snag one of those mechanical muffins for yourself. OH, I'M ONTO YOU BURTON! MUHUHUHUHAHA!

Here we go again with that lame ass (and tired, tired, TIRED) argument about Tim Burton being a "lousy story-teller." I'd like to know just what organ bag said that back in 1988 just so that every know-it-all dork fanboy-begets-critic could say it just to sound smart or knowledged about film. These are probably the same morons who filled the seats when dross like ARMAGEDDON, BLADE, and CHARLIE'S ANGELS became perplexing hits. Burton is a genius... Go back to your "Home Improvement" and whatever else gets you rednecks off...and find something new to say while you're at it.
Burton's best work: Edward Scissorhands.

Burton really needs to do films that fit his style of directing. That's why i'm confused that he continues to do re-makes like Planet of the Apes, Sleepy Hollow, or even Batman. The first two Batman's were ok, but still didn't do justice to the Dark Knight. Burton did achieve a dark and gothic tone to an extent, but i thought it was still too "wacky" of a style, and therefore not dark enough(although infinitely better than Batman 3 and 4). I agree with the earlier post, Burton has had a big problem in the area of story telling(the first Batman should have been called "The Joker"), and doesn't direct action very well. However, Scissorhands and Beetlejuice seemed to fit Burton's style perfectly, because they were such "wacky" stories, but in Tim Burton's world, i could buy it. I just don't think his style works for Batman, won't work for Superman, and I have my doubts about Planet of the Apes(but how could any one live up to the original?) Beetlejuice 2 doesn't excite me( but it would be great to see Michael Keaton, a great choice by Burton for the first Batman, back on the big screen. I think Keaton would be a good choice to play Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's Incredible Hulk.)

... Tim met Lisa Marie at Flashdancer's on Christmas Eve or something as the story goes. She WASN'T dancing there. She was just hanging out. It would be easy for me to make the cynical assumptions that most would make about a girl who hangs out at strip clubs meeting a famous Hollywood director but I think I'll leave the origins of their fairytale romance intact out of respect. And he HAS LEARNED how to do action sequences since the awful clumpsy movements in BATMAN. Proof of that can be found in the Batman/Catwoman fight scenes in BATMAN RETURNS and every fucking frame The Headless Horseman is in in SLEEPY HOLLOW. Well anyway, everybody's posted what projects they think Burton should tackle so here's my two cents. Three Words: I AM LEGEND. Thank God Ridley Scott didn't get to make that piece of shit script with AHNULD. I say give it to Tim Burton. Have him reunite with Keaton as Robert Neville. And for once maybe we'll get a faithful kick ass adaptation of THE GREATEST VAMPIRE BOOK OF ALL TIME. I loved THE OMEGA MAN with Chuck Heston and all his guns and goofy psuedo-hippy slang. Mathieus and The Family with their campy robes and their "nod -wink" Manson family posturing. But recently I've finally gotten the chance to read Matheson's book and now I'm floored. What a great fucking concept. I've read the awful script Ridley Scott was about to shoot and thank God they didn't because they really missed a bullet. Can you imagine AHNULD saying lines like "AHL GEHT YOO, BAN COHTMUN!". Yeech. So I say Tim should continue his streak of remakes of cheesy Chuck Heston sci-fi flicks and do I AM LEGEND. Keaton would be Robert Neville. Lisa Marie could play Virginia(his wife who dies and comes back as a blood sucker). Tommy Lee Jones as Ben Cortman. And Alicia Witt for Ruth(Well, she should be able to be casts in at least ONE redheaded role instead of being beaten out by some Blond in a wig, dagnabit!) I've read that the schmoe who directed that boring as molded cheese X-Files movie is currently attached with Kurt Russell interested in playing Neville. But I say fuck it. GIVE THIS FILM TO TIM BURTON.
Actually,

Scratch off Keaton as Robert Neville because he's too short. Make Keaton Ben Cortman and cast Alec Baldwin as Neville. Or maybe Gary Sinese(though he's not really all that tall either, but he does desperate, grissled, and pissed off pretty well). Ho hum.

I almost hate to suggest it, but I think Burton could probably pull off Invisible Monsters by Chuck Pahlinuk. At least the visual side of it - I think the actual subject matter would be beyond him. Even though it is just Fight Club with "girls" in it. If he could shoot it with the same humanity as Scissorhands, it could be pretty good. Then again, I never plan to watch another Burton movie again after Sleepy Hollow, which was so bad it made me have a seizure.

I'd would prefer do a Batman project over Superman. Catwoman and House Of Usher sound good, but I can only hope a decent script for Catwoman is found. All of these projects have the potential to kick ass hard.

i don't know about superman, but for the next batman movie, what about a collaborative effort between tim burton and kevin smith. think about it, kevin is admittedly "weak" on visuals, but he knows script, and he knows superheroes. (and he DOES want to do other stuff now) tim, on the other hand, has some truly brilliant visuals, but lets face it, the man could use some plot devalopment courses. between the two of them, i think they could truly put out a good batman movie. especially if they use matt frewer as the scarecrow, or mark hamill as the mad hatter...though not both in the same movie. and there you have it

why doesent tim try and do something wihout any fantacy elements. Y'know about people doing fairly normal things that dont involve martians or flying etc. hat would people think if tarantino did a sci fi / fantacy flick? Perhaps people are too hung up on special effects and not on human beans and we all know where that leads. Step forward the Mummy 2 and Lara Croft and take a deeeeep bow. Go and see Memento.

His worst two films - Mars Attacks and the first Batman - were still miles better than most Hollywood crap. And Edward Scissorhands is an undoubted masterpiece. If you don't get his stuff, fine. Maybe you should stop paying to see the films and whining about it afterwards. And has no one really seen POTA yet? Aren't there any spies in the MPAA?

Why Burton & Cage said no to Superman
by dragon's teeth

There was an interview with Nic Cage in a British newspaper maybe 6 months ago in which he said the reason for dropping the Superman Reborn flick was execs wanted to change the costume and therefore change the character. Both he and Burton walked when the studio wanted to change the red briefs for shorts, lose the cape, and draw flames on his boots. Thank God both had the good sense to run before WB's fucked up another comic legend.

Was I the only one who thought about Caleb Carr's kick-ass novel, The Alienist, during the final scene in Sleepy Hollow? It's a great book with interesting characters, a dark central theme and could certainly have been an inspiration for Depp's character. A hard book to convert I know but infinitely more interesting than The Bone Collector or Along Came a Spider (Two fuck up adaptations)
