Now when is Sci Fi going to show Crusades?
by gary2012

Am I the only one who noticed that the episodes of Crusades that were made before TNT got it's hands into the show were really good? I truely believe that if J.M.S. had been left to make the show he wanted it would have ended up being very good. Instead we ended up with a few great episodes, some okay episodes, and a few crap episodes. God damn you TNT, you and your big, sweaty, hillbilly, wrestling fan target audience!
And furthermore, Tina Fey is a beauty!.

I don't think Star Trek would work on a real network

I can't see any of big networks getting behind Star Trek and REALLY promoting it. For what it's worth, when Star Trek was syndicated and on UPN it was pretty much treated as the flagship show and you would see promos practically at any time of the day. On a big network, Star Trek would sort of fall below the radar after it premieres as its pecking order is honestly in the middle at best (You're not going to see the Enterprise circling the CBS Eye or anything). Sci-Fi shows just historically flounder on networks even if they're good. They don't function well as lead ins for non Sci-Fi fare and it's unlikely the network would green light an original series to fill that slot. But Star Trek works on the small stations looking for anything to draw a decent audience and Star Trek has that very built in audience which guarentees at least mediocre numbers. Think about it, the first Star Trek didn't do anything until it went into syndication.

I'm curretnly reading both of JMS's books, and I would have to concur with the above sentiment that Midnight Nation is far superior to Rising Stars. While Rising Stars is pretty good, Nation has potential to be one of those books that sets a standard(ie: Watchmen). I think it would make a great one season TV show.

Noticed a couple of new shows the network is plugging. The first appears to be a very obvious Buffy/X-Files rip-off called Section 2 (maybe, memory is hazy) with cops and bizarre creatures. The second is called All Souls (more sure of this title) and the brief promo remided me of The Kingdom (Lars von Trier). Is this possible? Is UPN remaking The Kingdom? What's the lowdown on these 2 new shows? The UPN site offers no info I could find.
Hell people, pick up Rising Stars and Midnight Nation.

I agree that so far Midnight Nation is the better of the two. However, Rising Stars is building up to be a more epic story. It will be twice as long as Midnight Nation (24 issues compared to 12,) and is, in my opinion, the more original of the two, at least initially. Don't get me wrong, I love Midnight Nation, but even after five issues I still can't help but compare it to Neil Gaiman's novel Neverwhere. Rising Stars, on the other hand, is only at the halfway point and there has already been about half a dozen plot twists to this sucker. At any rate, either one is about a thousand times better than most of the other stuff in comics today.

UPN and Trek

I agree with Mattun, I don't think Trek is a show for a major network. Sci-Fi usually doesn't do that well on the big 4. Unless you're the X-Files or something. But it would be nice to have Trek on a channel that doesn't move it to Saturday almost every week because of a Basketball or Hockey game. But another thing is that, and this can go either way, maybe it would be better for Trek to be on a big station. It would force them to make a great show, instead of getting stuck in the groove of Holodeck adventures and Prime Directive episodes. With Voyager, they never really tried anything drastically new, because Voyager was leading the station in ratings (for a none WWF show). But isn't that the same discription that was given to Level 9(last years mid-season replacement show)? And where is that show at now?

Sci Fi will be showing the 13 episodes of Crusade starting in April. They'll be showing them in the order that JMS wanted them to be seen, not the way TNT forced them to be seen, so there will be some dialogue looping that makes no sense (put in by JMS to fix the chronology when it was first shown), but other than that, it'll be done right, at last. Hooray! Except no hooray for the music. Egad.

Sorry folks, I hate to burst your bubble, but Marcus is staying in the freezer. According to a short story that appeared the final issue of "Amazing Stories" (No. 602) Marcus remained in cryogenic suspension for about 300 years before being revived and cured. Since the story was penned by JMS (Or at least approved by him as were all the B5 short stories that appeared there and in the British B5 Magazine) so that's canon. As for who's coming back, that's hard to say. Londo's on the Centuari Homeworld doing the Emperor thing while Vir is organinizing an underground to oppose what is going on (See Peter David's Centauri trilogy) Sheridan and Delan are running the IA. It could be G'Kar and Lyta who are out roaming the galaxy. I personally would like to see Lenier's redemtion. Although, who said that it has to be one of the heroes? Anyone for the return of BESTER?! (He was supposed to be in a Crusade episode but it got shut down before the could do it. Great script though.)

The fan favorite almost undoubtedly has to be Zathras. Bester might appear too -- but it will be brief -- he is supposed to die in the Telepath War, isn't he? Maybe we'll see the TP war because it was like two years ago in Crusade, and Crusade was 5 years after B5. Crusade is going to be re-aired by Sci-Fi Channel in April. Actually, Bester doesn't die in the Telepath War. HE survives, if not necessarily thrives, and has a few run-ins with another B5 alum before going Beyond The Rim. For the rest of the story, read J. Gregory Keyes excellent Psi-Corps trilogy (for my money, some of the best SF writing I've seen in years). Correct me if I'm wrong, but the story of the Telepath War hasn't actually been told yet. It's been hinted at in Crusade and in the novels, but I'm still waiting for the epic battle. Oh please, if the Rangers story does well, let SFC give JMS the go-ahead to make the movie, or better yet, a limited run series (deliberately, this time).

Please, JMS, they were really interesting and the actors were both great! If we never see anything else of Crusade, I hope in some way, shape, or form these two characters return big time. As for the Rangers news YES YES YES YEEEEESSSS! B5 rules! I hope, if haha, sorry, WHEN this series starts on Sci-Fi it replaces that hack job Black Scorpion. Imagine three watchable shows in a row on Friday Sci-Fi(yeah, I'm finding Jules Verne watchable, sue me). And finally, what a lovely joke to see B5 news like this followed by a reminder of how shit infested Star Trek has become. I loved the original series, I enjoyed TNG, and I really loved DS9, but ugh what a stinker Voyager has become. And I know the next one has little promise. But hey, I still foolishly hold out hope for Episode 2 so why not Star Trek series 5? And lastly, I might be interested in that Dragonriders of Pern series, too bad it's on the WB. I'm sure they're already saying "eh, it's a genre show so it'll appeal to teens."
Should be cool either way...

Since the time line of this new show will run into the Crusaders time line by season three. It would be cool to see the telepath war happen in this show and then to blend this in to the Crusaders since the Rangers are a major point in the Crusaders show finding all the worlds that the Excalibur visited.

If you like Midnight Nation (and who doesn't, for Christ's sake? It took me a week of searching to get #1-3) try Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere." It's about a city below London where homeless and forgotten people who've slipped through the cracks live, almost like a modern, darker Alice in Wonderland where everything has double meanings. Great stuff. Just trying to add some culture to the post boards!

Yeah, but Amber and Elizabeth are hot WITHOUT a bar of Zest. Imagine THEM in the real world. It was the same thing with Kimmi: she's lanky and annoying on the show, then she's lithe and hot post-ejection with some make-up and a skin-tight black turtleneck. She was still a skank on the show, lest we forget. That's where we see THE TRUTH, by God.

To heck w/ what's been written in the novels, thaw Marcus! I just loved the character, and I love Jason Carter the actor. He's one of the best convention guests ever. So my vote for the fan favorite, realistic or not, is Marcus. But other than him, the only other fan favorite that I think it could be is G'Kar. As much as I liked Lennier, I don't think he qualifies for "Fan Favorite" status. Oooh, ooh, OK - I thought of another good one - what if Ivanova comes back?? That would rock. - xrae@xrae.net

Midnight Nation is a good book but how can you call it a great book when it's only 5 issues in and were still learning about the characters Rising Stars on the other hand is a truly great story showing superheroes in a new light and the way the world perceives them it's also much more grand and epic in scope much more on par with a story like Watchmen. Oh yeah startin next month JMS takes over writing the Amazing Spider-Man book too. Can't Wait!!!

Michael Garibaldi? Hell, the Rangers are a tool for intelligence, and Garibaldi is the head of the IA's Covert Ops. Now that the Senate campaign is behind him, I suspect Jerry Doyle might be looking for something fun to do. He certainly seemed to enjoy doing the show more than most. Jerry and Claudia Christian had the best timing and some of the funniest and most memorable scenes regardless of who they were on camera with, but I also suspect that the rift betwixt JMS and Claudia will take forever to heal. Wouldn't mind seeing her come back for an ep or two as well. --Peekaboo. Would you have guessed it?

Bravo! I say, right on! I tried to watch an episode of Buffy and couldn't make it. The make up and effects for the "vampires" is a joke. As for reality shows, the last one I paid attention to was the Boston "Real World," and only because I was a freshman and didn't know any better. They get more pathetic as time goes on. Now I know I'm asking for trouble here, but to the Voyager bashers: It's not as bad as you think. I can say this, because once I too bashed it. The first seasons were horrible. Unlimited potential, and they were rehashing old NG plots. But gradually, the show has gotten better. As for a Doctor named "Doctor," he had a name for a few episodes, but something happened and he decided to drop it. And yes, there are a lot of Borg episodes, which I don't quite like, but again, some of them are pretty interesting. And it's cool to see Borg reasoning against the Prime Directive. Seven is the type that would cut the Gordian knot in half rather than solve it, and that goes against everything the Federation stands for. And unlike most of the other series (except for DS9) there are ramifications from one episode to the next, it's not all bottle episodes. What I think would be great is a series done in the style of B5, where the story moves from one episode to the next. But that's just me. As for being able to call Midnight Nation a great book, yes, it's only five issues in, but it's amazing. Rising Stars was three issues in when people were calling it the next Watchmen. And personally, much as I love rising stars, I think Midnight Nation is slightly better written. With it's smaller cast, JMS is able to focus more on the characters. But both are amazing books, and you should read them even if you've never picked up a comic in your life. Not bad for my second post, if I do say so myself.

Vampires in the Buffyverse
by TheOneCalledBen
Mar 22nd, 2001
08:27:58 PM
My only complaint about vampires in Buffy is that they all suck so badly. With the exception of Angel and his line (Spike, Drusilla, and his sire Darla) vampires as a whole seem to be a bunch of moronic blood-thirsty retards who get bested so easily. I can understand the recently created ones getting smashed to bits, but you'd think the vampires that are much older than that would be DOING something. The only time we even had a hint of a vampire setting up a power base was that tough vampire in Angel who introduced the whole Wolfram and Hart angle (and got pushed out a big window by Angel at the end). The most we ever see of a vampire on either Buffy or Angel now is a quick fight that ends with the vampire being dusted. The Vampire Slayer is too busy tangling with gods now apparently. At any rate, I still think both Angel and Buffy are great shows, but I'd rather see vampires stop getting shafted and seeing some vampires that are a little smarter and a little more tough to deal with. Why is it that only morons seem to be vampires?

Wow- about time this got made- I hope they start it with colonists moving from earth- its on of the best books and explains how the dragos came to be, on the other hand set it in the future timeline and have the **first** film tell the back-story- Much better. Anyone read the new book- is it any good? Is there a website for this project? And lets hope the dragons are not the frail things depicted on the covers of the books (in the UK at least) but 'chunkier' for the Bronzes and fast, nimble blues and greens [Dragons]. This will bse amazing if it follows the books- but I always thought a series of films would be better..

I used to come AICN because they were on top of things. Now everytime I come over here you got day old news you gleaned from some other site. Herc the strong, should be called Herc the Jerk. A few facts for the clueless that appear to only get their entertainment news here. JMS starts next month writing The Amazing Spiderman for Marvel. The series he can't talk about is going to be on Showtime probably to appear as an addition to their Sci Friday right after SG-1. A Crusade spoiler for you all, if you ever visited the bookface.com site (now defunct) you could have read the two scripts JMS did about the strange ship that destroyed Gideon's ship right before Galen saved him(built by earthforce with stolen Shadow tech, Gideon uncovers the conspiracy and would have 'apparently' been assinated in the final episode of Season One) They also had the script for the Bester episode which was written by Fiona Avery.(This was to be the next in production order when TNT pulled the plug) Read the novel trilogies if you want to find out more of what happened to everyone (They are all canon, because they are written from JMS outlines).

I think I read about this in the Rising Stars letters page. I think Rising Stars will be the new television show. And if it is it will probably have a wider focus on the characters then the comics does. I have to admit though the conclusion of the second Rising Stars story arc was a little lame. So yes I agree Midnight Nation is the better series. Can't wait for JMS' Spider-man! Him and Paul Jenkins who is writing Peter Parker will be kicking butt on Spidey now!

Accurate information

Delenn is not the "fan favorite" in the "Rangers" pilot. Mira Furlan confirmed this at a convention over the weekend. She was no more or less likely than anyone else anyway, despite being head of the Rangers. Eisenhower was head of the Allied Expeditionary force, but there are plenty movies about WWII in Europe that don't feature him. JMS's proposed series for Showtime "Jeremiah" is NOT the new series that he has a signed deal for. It is the "surprise third deal" that someone offered him a few months ago, actually a revival of a series concept he nearly sold a couple of years ago. "Jeremiah" is in heavy negotiations, based on JMS's pilot script, but it isn't a done deal yet. Expect the new show to be on a *broadcast network*, not cable. The "Rangers" deal does NOT mean that "Crusade" is dead. JMS has said as much himself. Sci-Fi will think about that one after they've seen the ratings for the reruns. They approved "Rangers" based on the ratings the "B5" reruns have been getting. JMS never said that the "fan favorite" in the movie is also going to be in the series (if that is approved), so speculation based on who could be a regular in the series is pretty pointless. At this point any major character who is walking around (and not freeze-dried in a tube somewhere) is a possibility. Unless they do some flashbacks, Marcus is NOT going to be in the movie. He's in cryo for another 300 years. JMS wrote the story, it is canon, and it would be a dramatic cheat to bring him back at any point in the story where he still has a chance to hook-up with Ivanova. BTW, JMS would have selected the character and made sure the actor was available/interested *before* he wrote the script. When SFC green-lighted the project the "fan favorite" was probably the first person signed so they could be certain of his/her participation. The film has been in preproduction for weeks, the script is finished and the thing starts shooting in May. How can anyone believe that they are going to change *anything* about this flick as a result of a fan petition this late in the game? The film (not necessarily the series) takes place in 2265. According to the "Crusade" Writer's Guide, the Telepath War starts in 2264 and ends in 2265. By the time it is over, both Lyta and Lennier are dead. So they may or may not figure in the pilot or in "Rangers." It all depends on what *month* the war ends and the movie begings. The movie title, "To Live and Die in Starlight" *does* suggest that *somebody's* gonna die, and it could well be the "fan favorite." SFC may OK the series when it sees the pilot, without waiting for the ratings. (TNT decided to pickup "B5" season 5, which they had not been interested in, after they saw "In the Beginning" and "Thirdspace.") That's all for now. Joe

That "Rising Stars" is NOT going to be a TV series, at least not anytime soon. MGM is doing it as a feature film. They have the first draft script (by JMS) but that's a long way from shooting or even serious pre-production. It probably won't be in theaters until late 2002 or early 2003. If there's a TV show it will come *after* the movie. Joe
