Actually,to the low-brows..."I Spy" was the bomb! Classy show, fun premise, superbly acted. Especially when you consider that a black lead character in a series, even Bill Cosby(!) Was a risk at the time to the networks. This WOULD be good if done correctly. Which means getting Owen Wilson the hell out of there. If you're going to take over for Robert Culp, at least have some credibility. Owen Wilson seems too clownish for me, kind of like a low-key David Arquette.

The problem with "Wild Wild West" was that it 100 some minutes of so-called comedy, there were no laughs. If "I Spy" is funny, that would be a different matter entirely. It'sabout time we had a decent spy spoof, instead of settling for the pathetic "Austin powers".

Owen Wilson really needs to stay behind the camera. And he needs to keep Luke with him. Even if you're going to act - good god, don't play the lead! Those boys, while talented, just don't do it for me.

And I used to like "I Spy", too. Very disheartening news. Hey, when's the "Man From U.N.C.L.E." movie starring Freddie Prinze Jr. as Napoleon Solo and Matthew Lillard as Illya Kuriakin due?? Way to go, Hollywood; keep on pissing on my childhood memories. Bastards..
How can they play it straight with leads like that?

Shit. I like to give any movie the benefit of the doubt, at least up until the crappy trailer hits, but Murphy and Wilson are going to trash this landmark series. I haven't seen that many episodes, but every time I do stumble across one, I'm reminded what a well-written, classy, and all around cool series it was. If I were restaging it as a film, I'd go with Denzel Washington in place of Cosby, Edward Norton as Culp, and maybe someone like John McTiernan as director (hoping for a "Hunt for Red Oktober"/"Thomas Crown Affair" type of approach). Brian "Mission Impossible" De Palma might be an interesting choice too. The point being, it needs to be a straight-up spy thriller. Frankly, "I Spy" isn't ripe for parody in the same way Bond was, and didn't "Get Smart" cover that material already anyways? Remake *that* into a movie if you want another spoof! It's just barely in the realm of possibility someone could build a decent comedy based oh-so-loosely on "I Spy", but it'd completely subvert what made the show unique. When the source material is pretty crappy, like the "Charlie's Angels" TV show, a revised approach can be fun, but "I Spy" was a class act. Solid characterization and real espionage stuff. Everyone out there should at least catch the episode I believe was called "Homecoming". An injured Culp and Cosby take refuge from enemy agents at the farm where Culp's grandparents live, and the last fifteen minutes is about the coolest "Assault On Precinct 13"-style shoot-out I've ever seen. Extremely goddamn hardboiled episode. It'll be a shame to see this fine show given over to the director who brought us "Dr. Doolittle" and "The Brady Bunch Movie."
it has to be a comedy with murphy & wilson.....can't be a tom cl

by the 2 leads you can tell it's going to be a comedy. if done well it could be a hit, just depend on how good the script is. it has a 50/50 chance of being good cause both murphy & wilson are good. i'm not going to trash this one. but it's not a serious spy movie like tom clancy's for sure.
Conflicted

OK, so I'm basically conflicted. I really dig I Spy the TV show, but can't help but think a movie is a bad idea. Here's why (because I know you want to know). 1st - I Spy was never about James Bond scale world saving issues. No wiping out the world's economy, no rogue spaceships swallowing nuclear armed satellites. It was smaller, more intimate and human. Two guys trying to do there job, and survive, both ophysically and emotionally. 2nd - While he provided laughs, Cosby wasn't playing as a comedian. He and Culp were two straight men, who had senses of humor. I think Eddie Murphy can pull it off, but I don't know enough about Owen Wilson. I had always pictured more of a George Clooney: a slightly weary, mid to late 60's swinger kind of guy. 3rd - (Am I still talking?) - A movie should not be a spoof or a comedy. I Spy didn't have the elements to spoof (minimal gadgets, no chicks in micro-minis, etc.). While Betty Thomas seems to have leaned toward comedy in her films, she was on (directed episodes of?) Hill Street Blues, so she knows drama. Further, and this is stretching, I thought the Brady Bunch Movie was good, and actually fairly insightly of what the appeal of the show is to us nostalgic Gen X-ers. SO maybe she can be as insightful for I Spy. Ok way too much writing. But damn it (sniff) I just care so damn much! ps. Did you see the one where Scott made the bomb out of fertilizer, ammonia, and a cigarette?
There's no accounting for taste

so I can tell you about my taste as it relates to this project. Owen is the coolest and I'll watch him in anything -- although I haven't seen Shanghai Noon yet, 'cause kung fu movies usually suck -- and Eddie is hit or miss, but who didn't have his album(s) memorized as a kid? Also the Klumps was funny and lovable, unlike Bowfinger. These two smartasses may have some chemistry so, that's cool. Luckily I have no sentimental attachment to the source material so I don't care what they do, or what they change from the original concept. The "based-on" situation will never change in Hollywood so I'm done with bitching and clamoring for original ideas. By the way the Brady Bunch movies are both excellent, especially the sequel, IMNSHO!

I only have two shows from the 1960's that I really truly love and will go out of my way to watch. The Avengers and I Spy. The great hollywood moguls have already massacred The Avengers with that 1998 piece of you know what. Now they are going to decimate I Spy if they make it into a complete comedy. The I Spy I remember was an action adventure show with a sense of humor but was played straight. I admit I enjoyed Charlie's Angels but Angels was never appointment TV. At least not for the plots. Playing it totally straight won't work either though. New Line did that with Lost in Space and did probably half the box office they could have done. I kept waiting for Gary Oldman to rip into the robot with "You Bubble headed boobie!" Plus they should have kept the old robot, the one with a man (Bob May) inside. But I digress. I Spy had it's own style and tone. I don't think they can capture it the way hollywood thinks today.

Who's writing it -- that's what I'm askin'? Eddie Murphy seems kind of old to play against Wilson. At least it's not Chris Tucker. Why not Tracey Morgan from SNL? I know he's not big enough, but I'd rather see someone like him in the Cosby role.

Would you consider 48hrs and Beverly Hills Cop comedies or action/dramas? They both had their funny moments but neither relied on heavy slapstick or utterly impossible/outrageous situations. Stick with having humorous but believable characters in realistic settings and they can probably pull it off. You can put a funny character in an action or drama flick without killing the sense of "realism" because there are people in real like who have funny personalities.

There's no way they'd get that many names unless Soderberg directed it! Although, I do think Gibson (who isn't a fav of mine) could do a fair Hannibal. But again, can we make a movie with GROWN UPS? No Brendan Frasier for Face...get someone older. No Taye Diggs for B.A. (that's just ridiculous). I'd do Gibson or Clooney as Hannibal, Michael Duncan Clarke as B.A., Matthew McConaughey as Face and Benicio Del Toro as Murdoch. Written and directed by Steven Soderberg.
I'd watch that A-Team.

Even as a kid, I thought the "A-Team" was pretty cheesy, but seeing as how all my neighborhood friends were redneck-types, I got a healthy dose of it anyway. And more than a little "Dukes of Hazzard" too. And...ah..."Knight Rider". And they were all crap, but I must admit with a little shame the inexplicable appeal of imagining those old dogs repackaged with some big budget flair. I know it's wrong Heavenly Father, but I *would* see an "A-Team" movie with Superninja's proposed cast. And God forgive me, but a live-action "G.I. Joe" movie in the tradition of McTiernan's "Predator" would rock the f'in planet. I'm going to hell.

If anyone is in the Buffalo/Toronto area, you can catch I Spy on Fox 29 at 2am every weeknight. In fact, it's on right now. They should get Culp to write this one if they want it to be true to the series. And get someone a little more sauve and sophisticated to play the Kelly Robinson-ish character (unless Murphy is playin that role and Wilson will be mumbling "I'll get a job in the morning, ma!").

Spy Vs. Spy WOULD Be Better!!

My ideal cast for that movie would have Jim Carrey and Will Smith as the Black and White spies, respectively (ooooh avant-garde)as the two long-time enemies are forced to work together in order to survive, though they double cross each other plenty! Renee Russo would play the triple agent who further messes up their lives.***As far as the A-Team movie goes, I like Superninja's cast too, but replace Del Toro with BEN STILLER!!
Thanks Jon

however, I think we can agree Del Toro would play a more subtle Mad Murdoch. As for a Predator-style G.I. Joe, I'd be on board that too. G.I. Joe, the real American Hero. Just don't let Bay direct or there will be puppies and flags blowing in the breeze.
I can't agree!

I cannot possibly see any serious A-Team movie being any sort of success. Maybe semi-serious, in a Long Kiss Goodnight sort of way, but that's about it. So what do we need Del Toro's subtler Murdoch for? More More More Fun! An Unrestrained Stiller a la Being Tom Cruise or Mr. Furious is the way to go. When's the last time we saw a good ACTION-COMEDY, a big eye-grabbing spectacle that was both eye-grabbing and hilarious? I want funny...a serious, subtle A-Team movie would have about as much appeal as a serious, subtle film version of Knight Rider, Baywatch, or Manimal.
But can they do it RIGHT?
by Jonny Quest

I just hope they go with the subtler, tongue in cheek humor of the series, rather than make it an out & out comedy, or worse, a total parody. It really bugs me when they turn a beloved TV show into a movie, and then produce a movie that is NOTHING LIKE the show in tone or style. It just kinda defeats the purpose to me. I HOPE Hollywood can still do "I Spy"'s sort of humor. I have serious doubts they can, but I hope.
