Hey, just today Steve did an interview over at salon.com (I'd paste the entire link but it would fuck up the talkback. It's pretty easy to find under the "people" section). Anyway, when they asked if he would give up acting for directing, his response was "Unless I could make a living directing, I don't think I'd give up acting. I'm not saying I wouldn't be able to make a living directing, but it seems that the films that I'm trying to get made don't attract a lot of money. "Animal Factory" only cost $3.6 million. I would imagine "Queer" is not going to have a huge budget either."

WHY?, i love Buscemi and i love Burroughs. I am lucky enough to have an original edition of Queer signed by Burroughs. I read the book last year on a Burroughs-tinged weekend (i read something like 5 Burroughs books one weekend) and this immediately was my favorite. It's not just about queerness, it's about love and you're wanting for another human being.... I CANT FREAKING WAIT!!!

I'm not overly sensitive, but 'its not about queerness, it's about love' is a perfect example of the casual denigration which plagues attitudes to homos. Queerness is love, love and fucking, which pretty much enacapsulates most of lifes passing happiness. Burroughs most of all wouldn't appreciate the bland-ass sugar coating of queers as 'witty sexless fashion victims, every girls best friend', using raw pornographic images in his work. Face it, perhaps Jesus could love cleanly, but I'm a guy, and love, for me, is inextricably bound up with drooling and sweat and sticking my dick into things. People who try to convince guys otherwise are emasculating do-gooders.

I'm one of those people that will watch just about anything with Buscemi's name on it. As much as I hated "Big Daddy" & "Armaggedeon" I still loved Steve in them. The man reeks of charisma - something not easily found in Hollywood actors nowadays (example- Freddy 'Living Dead' Prinze Jr & Sandra "anmoying as all hell" Bullock).

Some of you may remember a Nike commercial a few years back that featured soundbites from our now-deceased hero William S. Burroughs. I was incredulous; Nike had unwittingly hired a truly subversive ad agency. Mr. Burroughs, along with Allen Ginsburg and other "queer" members of the Beat movement, was responsible for setting the wheels in motions that have led to the modern gay rights movement. I, along with many of my "fashionista" brethren, are eternally indebted to Mr. Burroughs.

I remember a while back Buscemi was in lawrence with Burrough's editor hanging out. I think that he recorded a audio track of Queer. This was like 2 or 3 years ago.

There's a great scene where the Colonial Marines (many of whom are gay, and their commanding officers are not allowed to ask about that) have investigating a roadside rest stop. Their Lieutenant, safely back in his trailer, has ordered them not to use live ammo because he's afraid they will shoot him with it, but Private Heche has passed a couple of amyl nitrates to Private Liberace. Meanwhile, Corporal Everett has a giant dildo stashed in his rucksack. Suddenly, the walls themselves start to unfurl and our heroes are descending upon by HR GIGER creations with alternative lifestyles...David Fincher will direct QUEER CUBED (don't know how to make that little 3 at the end of the R, and don't tell me, I don't want to know) and then we got QUEER RESURRECTION, and there's even talk of a movie based on the Dark Horse Comic Series QUEER VS. BI-CURIOUS.

i will also automatically see anything that buscemi is attached too, whether he's acting or directing. he's very near the top of the list of actors who best enunciate the word fuck, along with de niro, dennis leary, christopher walken, james woods, and rip torn. anyway, trees lounge was definetely overloked, and i can corroborate the nice guy image cited in the story. a friend of mine was one of the ad's on the film, and he's told me stories of buscemi humping sandbags to get out of a location and get the crew off of the clock that much earlier--what a guy. and to the guy who read 5 burroughs books in one weekend, all i can say is.....jesus.

Its interesting that Burroughs has become a filmable author. Naked Lunch kind of proved it was possible to "film the unfilmable", witch is what his works were always considered. Sure, you have to take tons of liberties, but you can still inject the some of the spirit, and somewhat remain faithful to the man...i remeber in every interview with Buscemi after Trees Lounge, he went on and on about how difficult directing was and how there was a strong possibility that he may never direct again-not that he had ruled it out, but that he didnt have any desire at the time, it wasnt a process he was in love with. i was kind of let down by this, because Trees Lounge was a nice litle movie and despite starring, directing, and writing(?) it, Buscemi totally made a simple character study and not a vanity project. It was deviod of any ego on his part. You could tell it was just from a guy who liked the process. Glad to see he has decided to keep trying his hand at directing,; it will be interesting to see how his resume works out...Animal Factory was on Cinemax, briefly. Kick myself for not being able to see it yet.

Nice to see some more news on this - there was a mention made in Burroughs' final book (last words?) about a meeting between Bill and Steve Buscemi. I actually thinks some of his books ARE filmable (queer, junky, yage letters - now I would queue for the last one), as to whether they add value to his legacy, hmmm. (mind you probably more than having Kiefer Sutherland play WSB)

Animal Factory was a great film! Buscemi and Furlong did excellent jobs, but Mickey Rourke as a transvestite inmate stole the show! Do I hear Best Supporting (Support hose?) nominee?
