This would be so cool! I would love to see it. I am a big fan of the 1980 movie. Though a bit campy now, it was kick ass when I was 8 years old. Hope they bring back Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin too. Also bring back the original costume director and remix/re-edit the Queen soundtrack then we have ourselves a movie seeing. Go Mr. Scott!

I am SO FUCKIN sick and tired of any and all characters that were created before 1938 getting the shaft, getting stuck in sub-par movies, and getting ignored by the general public. So many GREAT and truly imaginative characters get screwed in the cinema. The Shadow was boned by a bad movie with a dumb villian with no purpose. And WHUT THE FUCK was he doing with nickel plated long barrel .45s?!? COME ON!! The Phantom bent over with another dumb script and another stupid villian. And why in the name of god did he NOT kill his opponents??? Finally I hear the bell of a great character being handled by a great director and an intelligent creator. Now if only we can get a John Carter of Mars animated movie, with Bruce Campbell as John's voice and Salma Hayek as Dejah Thoris, or a live action one with the same actors. With both Flash and Doc Savage looking to be in good hands, i can finally breathe easy. Until the Dodgers go home to Brooklyn, I remain......Greensleeves18

Ridley Scott- cool choice. Just use Matt McConaughey as Flash, 2 good actresses who are beautiful in an old-fashioned way as Dale & Aura, an Errol Flynn type as Prince Barin, and big name star who can just SEEEEEEETHE evil as Ming! Bring back Brian Blessed as Vultan! Use current makeup and computer technology to accurately convey the Hawkmen, Sharkmen, and Lionmen from the strip! Keep it fun WITHOUT going over the edge into campiness, like the 1980 movie! Keep Sam J. Jones, Queen, and the people who did the 90's cartoon away from this project at all costs! It CAN be done, people! C'Mon! Let's show all these Johnny-come-lately STAR WARS fans where Lucas swiped half of his ideas from! First Scott's got to finish off post production on hannibal then he's got to get those special editions of Bladerunner and Legend (if it hasn't been cancelled.) out. Then there was that stuff about Terminator 3. And if it was a choice between a remake or a sequel to Terminator I think Scott would be better off doing the sequel, ofcourse in an ideal world he'd be given something cool to make like a Preacher film. Then again Flash Gordon was pretty cool and that music, yea that is pretty retro cool remembering it now and I agree McCourney would be a good flash. Didn't the original have Richard O'Brian and some guy from Blue Peter in it?

But yeah, of COURSE I'm down for a more serious take on the original space hero! Hmm, or was that John Carter, Warlord of Mars? Anyway, Ridley dropped the ball big time in "Gladiator", but an enthusiasm possibly born of extreme drowsiness and cough syrup tells me he could make a comeback. Man, I love that old Alex Raymond stuff, and would love to see Flash return as an icon to rival Luke Skywalker, his spritual successor. But all you cats getting hyped for this, shut yer word-holes if you wanna trash talk the 1980's "Flash Gordon" in the process. Loved it as a kid and still love it dearly today. War Rocket Ajax still comes across as mighty cool ("Charge the lightning boosters!", Dalton is still a great Barin ("Lying bitch!", Aura will never be hotter ("I want him, father..."), and Sam Jones...that guy was like the Owen Wilson of his day. Cheesily affable. "Flash Gordon, quartback, New York Jets!" Priceless.

Amazingly, Dan Jurgens, known best as A BAD COMIC BOOK WRITER, did a very fine job on it. The nine-parter took itself fairly seriously and leaned a little more towards an R-rating than PG. Flash was written as a slightly over-the-hill basketball player, a rich, egotistical asshole who's directionless and past his prime. Naturally, the site of Ming's atrocities awaken a leader spirit in him, and the process of getting their is pretty slick. Jurgens came up with this notion that Ming controls all the technology on Mongo with an iron fist, so that's why only his men carried ray guns while the lion men, for instance, still used swords. The races are all supposed to have been genetically engineered from normal Mongo stock to provide various services to the Mongo elite. Suprisingly good concepts and character interaction, but the comic kept the action fairly non-stop too. It'd actually serve as a fine template for a serious film treatment. I recommend it to any Flash fans out there, 'long as you're not the type to whine at the slightest alteration from Raymond's original material...

Good adventure stories can stand to be reinterpreted or built upon for new generations every once in a while. Sure, sometimes you get bombs like Disney's "Three Musketeers" or Costner's "Robin Hood", but sometimes you get some sly new takes, like "Mask of Zorro", or even "Robin & Marian". Besides, much as I love the 80's "Flash Gordon", and some folks are nostalgic for the 30's serials, there's never been a truly great big screen version of the story. Well, maybe "Star Wars", but "Star Wars" doesn't have Hawkmen. Or Princess Aura.

by TheRevMonkeyJoe

This may be far out in left field, but try to look at it from Monkey Joe's eyes. if this flick is a go, cast Owen Wilson! Yeah, why not? It adds more dimension to the script if you have a natural loser who is ultra cool like Owen, but really turn it around. He has this old time braggadocio, which is used to cover up his ignorance. Hey, Flash Gordon was never meant to be a rocket scientist, that was what Zarkov was for. So, what do you have? Owen Wilson as Flash, a Rachel Leigh-Cook or even a Brittany Murphy, for Dale Arden; Jurgen Prochnow as Zarkov (who can top Topol?) Now get this: Dougray Scott as Prince Barin (You cannot dispute that) Brian Blessed as Vultan (One word:"DIVE!") And the coup de grace, the piece de resistance...Patrick Stewart as Ming the everlovin' Merciless! Stewart would probably be the hardest to get, I'd suppose he'd be weary of sci-fi fare, but he's the only possible successor to Max von Sydow. You know what the best thing about this dream cast would be? THE SAVINGS!!! None of these actors are certified A-list people, and therefore, more money can be saved for production. I challenge any of you to pick this theory apart. But before you do, look at it and then really think about it and how the actors would fit the characters. Then Decide.

Matthew McConaughey and Jude Law are both pretty funky choices for Flash. Catherine Zeta Jones as Dale. Geoffery Rush as Zarfoff (should be Oliver Reed but he's kind of dead unfortunately). Ideally Gary Oldman or Alan Rickman as Ming (purely because no-one does bad guys like us theatrical Brits) but neither would do so hows about Arnold Vosloo. Mena Suvari as Aura. Ben Chaplin as Barin. Brian Blessed IS Vultan.

This sounds slightly unlikely but if it did happen it would seriously kick ass. I mean it. The concept and world behind Flash is great and could rival Star Wars in many ways. Scott has immense visual skills and he would blow us away if given a script of intelligence. I for one would love to see this with the state of current special effects technology. First off, a new take on Flash Gordon would be too cool. Loved the 1980 version and Max Von Sydow was perfection itself as Ming. In 1984 or 85 I met Sam J. Jones at a celebrity golf tournament where I also got autographs from Todd Bridges, Charles Lane and (my biggest thrill) Spanky MacFarland. Anyway I went up to Sam J. Jones and overheard him saying to another player that he didn't know why he was there and couldn't understand why anyone would want his autograph. He saw himself as a has-been. So I made sure to tell him how much my family loved Flash Gordon. Sam was very nice and signed my program.

I can almost remember the theme song, at least the part where is went DEFENDERS OF THE EARTH! I'm not too sure about the kids though. I think Flash had a blonde son (duh), and there was a chick who may have been the Phantom's daughter. I can also vaguely recall a son for the black guy, and then there could have been a younger Indian kid who Mandrake was looking after. There was also a training room not dissimilar to the X-Men's Danger Room...Ah well, I'm sure nobody probably cares, but the little I know about Flash Gordon was from that show, oh, and the 80s flick.

(You guys do realize that Buck came before Flash, right?) Anyhoo, I'm not sure how plausible any of this is, but I'd like to see a FLASH GORDON flick. Ridley Scott doesn't sound quite right (his last attempt at heroic adventure, LEGEND, was too pretentious for its own good), I'd prefer Sam Raimi. And, though he's been suggested for everything- Bruce Campbell as Flash. Bleach the hair and we've got no problem. Maybe with Lucy Lawless as Dale Arden and Valeria Golino as Princess Aura.... there are plenty of possibilities.

Response to Caitrin about "Gladiator's" suckitude...
by Dave_F

I posted extensively about my disappointment with "Gladiator" in the Talkbacks when it came out. Here's the link to that very loooong Talkback if you want specifics: http://www.aintitcool.com/tb_d isplay.cgi?id=5883#204095 ******* In short, I thought it was a flat revenge flick with pretensions of great drama. Crowe's a great actor but Maximus wasn't very appealing to me. The shaky-cam style of the battle sequences was too chaotic. I also found the setting shots unconvincing, especially in comparison to "Spartacus". And Commodus was a boring villain, no matter how long Scott wasted showing his "ooh, nasty" antics. I really wanted to like "Gladiator", to find myself emotionally involved enough to ignore its problems (as I did with "Braveheart"), but it left me totally cold. Not the worst film of the year, but not one I'd have any interest in watching again. In general, Ridley Scott has had a pretty weak track record over the last ten years: "White Squall", "1492", "G.I. Jane", and yes, "Gladiator". His last great film was "Thelma & Louise".

Defending My Casting Choices...
by Sorcerer

No insult to Bruce intended- a FLASH GORDON film could be good. If I were suggesting him for a GILLIGAN'S ISLAND movie you'd have a point, but a pulp sci-fi movie isn't too insulting. Lucy Lawless- first off, Dale doesn't necessarily have to be helpless or whiny. Secondly, Lucy doesn't always have to be as tough as Xena. There's a median between the two that could work. My second choice was Angela Dotchin, but I'm not sure if she can do an American accent. I'm just throwing out ideas here, no need to get angry.

I just read a poster above slam the old '80's "Flash" film. Come on, show a little compassion! Yeah, it ain't "Star Wars", but today it's so chessy it's great. Especially with all Ming's costumed warriors that look like a bunch of refugees from the Philadelphia Mummers parade. And how could you hate a movie that used the above quote from my subject line? I mean, it's funny as hell to hear Jonesy (Flash)utter that quote today! It's even funnier to hear it when the Jets are having a bad year, which was a lot until recently. Not that I hate the Jets.

First of all, let me just say that I absolutely loved the 1980 version. I thought it was a great tribute to both the comic strip and the serials. It also had a terrific cast and a fantastic soundtrack by Queen (the only rock band that should be allowed to score films). If Dino Delaurentis is also producing this new remake, it would make perfect sense that Ridley Scott's name is attached, considering the fact that he is involved with another Delaurentis production, HANNIBAL. I would like to suggest that if Mr. Scott is not available, I think Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer) would be a perfect choice. Hey, you might as well throw in Jennifer Connelly and Bill Campbell as my choices for Flash and Dale too (with Jeremy Irons as Ming). As for the rest of the cast, you simply can't beat Timothy Dalton, Topol, and Brian Blessed (unless you include Catherine Zeta Jones as princess Aura). ;)
