This series is gonna be lame like Tekwar and worse than Lynch's flick. Babylon 5 is the best ever. Watch it every night in widescreen at 7:00 on SCI-FI.

Isn't that the same red-headed guy in the movie version of the DUNE? I thought they would of tried going for something different then using David Lynch imagery as a resource...

Perhaps I'm in the vast minority, but I don't see what's so bad about the Dune movie. Was it a bad adaption? Sure, but as a movie in itself, I thought it rocked. Yes, I have read the book and I actually think that the Dune movie improved many areas of the book(lasey guns, anyone?). Keep in mind as well that Frank Herbert approved the script for the movie so we're not talking about some hotshot soiling the good name of a book.

I agree. The four hour version of Dune isn't bad at all.

What I loved about Lynch's Dune was the five minute slide-show at the beginning. You know, where we get to see a courtroom bad-sketch-artist history of the galaxy. That followed by a confusing, over-acted, over-bloated movie was the BEST! Here's a fun drinking game: watch Lynch's Dune and take a drink anytime the movie makes no sense whatsoever. You'll be drunk in minutes! Fun, fun!

Okay, so I've had a bad day and I'm taking it out on this movie. It was confusing and over-acted, but the FX was good and I loved the sandworms. I apologize for bashing the movie so harshly. But try the drinking game :)

I was 12 years old when Dune premiered, and I saw it with my father in a huge theater while visiting St. Louis. There were six people in the audience. Having read the books, as had my father, we both loved the movie and felt that it was a fair translation of the book. I am an avid reader, and an avide movie fan, and Dune is the best translation of a book into a movie I have seen. Other translations have been truly terrible; Raise the Titanic, a fantastic book by Clive Cussler and a horrible movie (so bad that Cussler has never allowed a move made fromone of his books since), Kiss the Girls (simply not accurate to the book), Battlefield Earth (an excellent book, in my opinion - have not seen the movie due to the overwhelming BAD reviews)..and I could go on and on. I am not into watching television, and as such, do not subscribe to cable of DSS, but this new Dune production for the SCIFI channel looks promising. I would have to assume that it will eventually be released on DVD, as have other made-for-tv movies like Alice in Wonderland. For others in this talkback, may I ask, if you a reader, what is the best and truest translation of a book into a movie? No specific genre. Thanks

First, the actor who played the Baron Harkonnen in David Lynch's movie- Kenneth McMillan- is dead, dead, dead and has been so for years. It is therefore unlikely that he will be reprising the role in the upcoming miniseries. Second, the expository cartoons were not part of Lynch's Dune, they were added by the studio for the televised "Alan Smithee" cut. So there.

For the person who asked what the best transition from book to movie has been, I would have to say that the Green Mile was extremely faithful. The only thing they really left out was a sub plot with Tom Hank's character in the nursing home. He has some consistent trouble with one of the nurses. Other than that, I think pretty much every scene in the book can be accounted for. And hey, I was a good movie as well.

This looks very much like the 1984 movie. Too bad it gets a bad rap...but it was too confusing for a mass audience. I remember when the video was first released it came with a brief flyer that explained all the characters and settings. How pathetic is that? I enjoyed the movie as well but I'm more forgiving of Sci Fi flicks. I even liked last spring's Supernova and Pitch Black.

Take a drink every time the movie doesn't make sense? That's gotta be the worst drinking game I've heard of if you're looking to catch a buzz...unless you're some kind of moron I guess.

Dino De Laurentice and Max Von Sydow, the team that CANNOT be beat with bad Sci-Fi(that isn't redundant, is it). As for the movie and the book, they just aren't the same. The movie is terrible as an adaptation. The cast is good(save Sting), but it just fails to bring the best parts of the book to life. And I hate hate hate the conceptual art. Too gothic. But as bad '80's Sci-Fi(more redundancy) it's great stuff! Sadly it has forever tainted the book by misrepresenting it to the uninitiated. That's not right, even if you did like the movie.

Nope...I don't like the Dune movie for a drinking game either. Too vague...I could just say I understand EVERYTHING and BS the night away. No... you need a good hook that nobody can miss even in an alcoholic haze. Watch Strange Brew with Bob and Doug McKenzie...every time they say "EH" you have to drink a 1/2 an oz. of beer. If they drink you have to drink a half a beer. I couldn't walk two blocks home after that drinking game.

Never play a drinking game with anyone who quantitativly defines the amount of beer that qualifies as a "drink."
