Wll what can I say, except that I support Shyamalan's decision to do something different instead of making a sequel to The Sixth Sense , which was a good film, but not the masterpiece that everyone considered it to be. But maybe that's because ereryone was making such a big deal about the twist, that when I watched I was trying to see if I could guess it and after half an hour, I guessed it. Which was a shame, really. So, I just want to say thanks to the reviewer for not giving away spoilers, because that always sort of ruins it for me..

"The balls to try something different"? Like what? Make another film based around a fucking gimmick? This is still high concept filmmaking. I'll probably go see this, but The Sixth Sense was without a doubt one of the most overrated films of 1999. Best FUCKING Picture nomination? Best director? Best Screenplay? Are you kidding me? Do you know how many great films were out there last year? The other films with "gimmicks" at least had some themes and character development to back it up. Being John Malkovich and Fight Club left you with a lot more than "Oh, you tricked me, sneaky director!" I'm waiting for the contrary reviews to come flooding in, you can bet your ass we'll be seeing them soon.

Looks like the Karnac above just got his wish....if anything, "The Sixth Sense" was underrated, not overrated. It was more than just a standard spooky film revolving around a cheap gimmick. To give an often-cited but relevant example, you can go back and watch the movie again and see all the various instances the color red pops up, as an indicator of the supernatural and a harbinger of things to come, etc., and this shows a special dedication to the "little touches" that helped make the film great. The film is more than a standard flick with a surprise ending, and anyone who cannot see that is just plain narrow-minded and dissmissive.

If what the reviewer said is true then its great he did'nt stick with a formula and re-hash his first movie, if its truly a different direction then thats fantastic. Im sick of seein the same old re hash every year and this summer was the worst in a long time..nothing good even on the horizon. If it weren't for Tak Fujimoto, TSS might've been dismissed as quickly and unceremoniously as WIDE AWAKE. Nothing wrong with high concept (and, tacitly, Laz admitted FIGHT CLUB is housed in that category,) but put some meat on them bones; either make a rollicking commercial flick, or give the work some intellectual heft. As for 2000 Oscar noms, I still can't believe the relative indifference with which THE WINSLOW BOY was met last year. Perhaps, had Mr. Rattigan's titular lad seen dead people instead of swiping postal notes, Mamet and co. would've been in attendance at the Shrine Auditorium last March.

He lives his life blissfully unaware that people are terrified of the utensils that seemingly float off the table when he's around. I wouldn't point fingers at "Sixth Sense" for the failure of noteworthy, smaller films such as "Winslow Boy", "Run Lola Run", "Titus", etc. to get there due by the Academy last year. Sixth Sense deserved and was fortunate to receive all the nominations it got, even if it wasn't an indie. Instead, I would argue that the extremely early, misguided coronation of tripe like "American Beauty" (which the powers that be in the academy seemed to identify with) spelled the doom of more worthy fare. WAY, WAY more attention (and TOO much attention) was showered by the press at "American Beauty" than "Sixth Sense", (or any other movie for that matter), effectively silencing what little voice smaller films could muster. This, in 1999, what what was arguably one of the best movie years of all time.

Just wanted to jump on the anti-TSS bandwagon. IMHO, this putrid, predictable, slow-moving, brainless, dickless, colorless (yes, ARCTURUS, colorless - a droplet of red foreshadowing in a sea of muted London fog grey does not evoke orgasms of joy in the cinematography department), sleep-inducing, soulless, stinking stew of stallion smegma deserved none of the accolades it received. That it received nominations for, much less won, an Academy award reveals the voters to be the spineless sheep everyone has suspected - and DON'T get me started on the vast unwashed that made this flick (film is too forgiving a term) the hit that it was. I suppose it is a foregone conclusion that Unbreakable should acheive similar box office, but I won't be giving up my $7 for an air-conditioned nap. Did I mention that I did not care for M. Night's previous work?

Exactly where was the substance spoken so highly of in The Sixth Sense? I haven't even had a DESIRE to sit through it again, whereas Fight Club actually necessitates a second viewing to truly understand the relationships between the characters and the weight of the material. If you told the story of The Sixth Sense straightforward, you would not have an engaging film. That's all there is to it. It was all set-up and payoff. With Fight Club, it just added another dimension to an already successful black comedy/social satire. The Exorcist was a great, Oscar deserving film because of the boundaries it broke at the time, and perhaps much of the acclaim was due to the "shock of the new", but what Linda Blair accomplished in that film makes little Haley J. look like a member of the Mickey Mouse Club. The sheer emotional force of the film puts it miles ahead of dry material like TSS, which didn't really do anything that hadn't been done before. Even The Shining's "gimmick", which is ODDLY similar to TSS, was a coda so beside the point it really didn't add to (or detract from) the visual tour-de-force that preceeded it. The feeling I'm getting with Unbreakable is: "Oooh. He can't be harmed. Oooh...this guy can. I wonder what the cool connection is going to be, and where in the last 10 minutes of the film it's going to be revealed?" Don't dust off any space on the mantle, M. Night.

...is that it would have still worked without the twist ending. It was a pretty good film, whether you identify with it or not. There is nothing wrong with movies whose great attractive is a twist ending. Think of the Usual Suspects. If it wasn't for the twist ending, it would have been just another charming criminals picture about people who would do anything because of their greed. I don't hear anyone complaining about that twist ending.

I do agree mostly with the naysayers. The Sixth Sense was overrated; still pretty decent but not nearly deserving of all of the dirty knee pads it caused. Strange thing though, someone mentioned to me that there was a plot twist at the end and instantly I knew exactly what it was. Maybe that killed the experience for me?

In response to a post above about what ends to happen in these talkback section - I have this to say - the reason why there is so much hyperbole used here to either praise or (more often) denounce a film/filmmaker/actor/etc. is that many of you here have no balls. You do not have enough belief in your own opinion and in your own views to simply state your opinion in a convincing manner. Instead, you simply pile on the suprelatives and hope that if you say "sucks" or "crap" or "mindless" enough times, then people will be swayed. Listen people - get some nads and just state your opinion - if no one agrees with you, then have enough confidence to accept that your view is different from others.

I just saw the new Aish movie (Dhai Akshar Prem Ke - Two and a Half Words of Love) which also has Sonali Bendre in it. My review will be in this coming week's column but let's just say for now that the movie isn't exactly very good. Hell yes both Aish and Sonali are MAJOR HOTTIES, but their acting (esp. Aish) and their good looks can't exactly carry a movie.

I'm thoroughly disgusted at the canonization of M. Night. He is a middle-range talent at best. I read the "The Sixth Sense" script a day after it sold for seven digits and was mildly impressed. It was a good read. But it was also, for the most part, derivative and poorly structured. The movie, without benefit of the "surprise ending" was poorly paced and structurally unsound. Look, I know this movie hit people where they live and captured that whole "there must be more to life than the stock market" type of thing. I respect his taking on spirituality. But the movie is a less interesting rip-off of "Jacob's Ladder." Philadelphia looked spooky (thank you Mr. DP). The acting was okay. That's about it. Bruce Willis' hair piece deserved more kudo's then him. And the manipulation of POV really becomes apparent after five minutes. I read where M. did something like 17 drafts. It shows. This was a movie that transmogrified into a ghost story. Let's hope unbreakable doesn't become "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" for the Internet Generation.
