It's No secret that Brooks was the powerfull presents (AKA GLUE) that kept Star Trek:DS9 on for as long as it was on (dry spots and All!) And to goback to the 80's when he had My favorite TV serirs on the SPRNCER FOR HIGHER( no i don't know if i spelled that right !^&#) Spin off A MAN CALLED HAWK! bUT THINK ABOUT IT BROOKS MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BETTER CHOICE THAN SAM JACKSON IN THE SHAFT MOVIE!!! A bigg and more phically im posing person than Jackson, Brooks could easily with his acting go from ass kicking Bastard to Ladys man to street Pholispher (FUCKING SPELLING!!!) SOME THING THAT I THOUGHT WAS A PART OF SHAFT IN THE Richard Roundtree movies and compleetly left out in the Jackson Pic!!! If Director John Singleton Reall wants a Better Shaft for the almost prerequsit next movie Brooks is the Man!!!

in your assesment of Dark City. The reason it died a miserable death is that so many of the monkey-minded film geeks were on their fortieth viewing of Titanic (a movie I have yet to see, for I was watching the best movies that got next to no praise like Dark CIty, Deep Rising, Big Lebowski, and a ton of others in early 1998). Every film I went to that year, from January until Lost In Space opened, was almost devoid of people, as they were in attendance of the previously stated movie menace. And Dark City is also a heavy movie to watch on the big screen, its soooo damn dark and when the light hits, it almost burned my eyes away. Much better on DVD and a 32 inch tv... Avery Brooks was the best Starfleet captain ever! Its a pity they dont make a low budget DS9 movie with him kicking everyone's ass. Or team him up with Kirk and they can just beat aliens senseless. Or just give him a movie called "Ditch", in which he plays a character similar to Shaft. Okay, I guess I'm making no sense...

AVery Brooks was easily the best actor STar Trek ever had. Captain Kirk was always my favorite character, but there is no question that Brooks is a far better actor then William Shatner. It is a damn shame that his work on Deep SPace Nine was never recognized with an Emmy for best actor. Week after week he gave powerful performances as Benjamin Sisko. "The Visitor", "In the Pale Moonlight", and "Far Beyond the STars" stand out in my mind as some of the most amazing performances I've seen on episodic television in a LONG time. His work in The Big Hit and American History X was excellent as well. I've always felt that Samual L. Jackson and Avery Brooks would make a fantasic on screen pair. Someone really should cast together in a film!!
The Hairy Lip and The Ham

First the ham... What Avery Brooks has in common with William Shatner is not their place in Star Trek history, but instead their bizarre, staccato line readings. No one should talk like that, unless the have a perforated diaphragm. Now the hairy lip... True DARK CITY got the shaft at the box office. Once it was dumbed down (thanks to Keannu and limp script) and retitled THE MATRIX, it did quite well for Warner Bros. I saw DARK CITY in a test screening and thought it was most notable for a scene that was cut out. Jennifer Connolly was singing in a nightclub (actually lip sync-ing in a nightclub set) and the way the DP shot it, you could see every hair on that girl's lip. There was a lot of 'em, too. Jennifer has a chest and a moustache to rival anyone in the business. SO if you want to talk Dr. Suess casting, I say put Avery in GREEN EGGS AND HAM and cast Jennifer as THE LORAX. That is all. I speak for the trees.

I agree that Brooks has a good presence and a cool voice, but come on. The dude needs to learn the difference between good acting and overacting. "Far Beyond The Stars" was good, but it was IN SPITE of Brooks. I love the episode, but I wince when he starts "Hulking up" with the dialogue. The dude's definitely a cum laude graduate of the William Shatner School of (Over)Acting.

I can't believe Avery Brooks is getting credit for his acting here. C'mon, the guy's an over the top ham. Those embarrassing TV spots he's doing are stupid and make Shatner's Priceline.com ads look restrained and quality. On DS9 he was always spoiling dramatic scenes with his voice ping-ponging back and forth between a low pitbull growl to paniced little girl screaming, and those slow burn stares he would give always made me think he had just taken some heavy medication. Michael Dorn, a very limited actor to begin with, would always come off looking like he was a thespian of DeNiro caliber whenever he shared a scene with him.

Ever since I saw that commercial (flying cars!) during an episode of conan obrien two nights ago, all me and my brothers have been saying is "WHERE ARE MY FLYING CARS? I WAS PROMISED FLYING CARS!" All of the new IBM commericals are awsome, in a very different way from the just as awsome priceline.com commericials. Shatner's apparently getting scads of offers from hollywood due to his newfound publicity, let's hope the same happens to brooks.
commercials in wide screen

Has anyone else noticed the new wave of commercials being provided in widescreen format? The first one I remember seeing is the "Ahhh, the power of cheese" commercial with the pirates awaiting the captain so they can eat. "Pork, the other white meat" also has a commercial in widescreen with the guy deciding what meat to purchase. And of course, the new IBM commercials are in extreme widescreen. Do you think they are getting ready for the nationwide launch of HDTV?

dark city rules!rufus sewell is actually british,so I don't think he's done that much american movie work. he was in the tv mini series arabian nights(I think that was the name)recently and I saw him in a trailor for a pretty cool looking movie when I saw me myself and irene.have you ever seen avery brooks talk when not in a charachter roll? It's absolutely the most bizzare thing I've ever seen.as far as HDTV ,I think the main focus is being emphesized on wide screen and not hdtv.the wide screen format is supposed to be standard by 2006.every new tv movie ,commercial and show will be broadcast this way by then, literally forcing everyone to buy widescreen tvs.I was recently at a local Tweeter and one of the salesmen said that 4x3 tvs will no longer be made in 3-5 years and will go the way of vhs. getting to vhs,it still really annoys me that people are buying this obsolete foregone medium! you'll save so much time and money if you get on the dvd bandwagon now ,it's just inevitable

Yes indeedy, that is a great ad. Frankly, DS9 only intermittently showcased the awesome heights of Avery Brooks's talent. The ideal vehicle has yet to be found for this magnificent actor. As for Dark City, while I loved the film, I can understand why it didn't hit big. It wasn't that audiences didn't "get" the picture; it's that the film, while visually stunning, sports an uneven storyline that builds up to a conclusion that is decidedly underwhelming. Add that to the dubious star appeal of the likes of Rufus Sewell (brilliant actor, but not one that tweaks the hearts of the teenagers of Peoria) and Kiefer Sutherland, and you have a package that is 80% of the classic it should have been. One can't ignore, either, the overly enigmatic marketing (shades of Fifth Element) and lukewarm critical response. Anyway, back to Avery Brooks...Avery rocks!!! Soichiro out. "Courage!"

Avery is very underated and he should either star in a new TV series or movie. And I really enjoyed Dark City as well. The Matrix can't even compare storywise to Dark City. It's okay to make a thinking film and not rip off William Burroughs, Philip Dick, William Gibson and countless others just so you can reach the typical "joe sixpacks*" of today's moviegoing audience. *NOTE: Joe-Six-Pack is a term to describe the typical uninformed movie-goer who believes that the black letterbox bars on his screen meant that the DVD or VHS was defective.

....of Louis Black's "What did Y2K get us?" routine, from his stand-up special that you can see regularly on Comedy Central. I seriously hope they're giving him royalties since it seems pretty clear he was the originator of the "complaining about no flying cars in the new millenium" concept. Next thing you know they'll have an ad complaining about a non-IBM equipped computer's inability to comprehend the phrase "If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college..."

I loved Dark City...as "Movie Director" at the Hollywood Video wehre I work (that means I'm a paid in hour movie critic), I often recommend Dark CIty....13th Floor was also another intresting one. As for Brooks, I love old school Trek (hate the modern crap that Berman spews), but I thought DS9 had merit for a while, and I loved him. He's the next best thing to Kirk. Now if only HE'D been cast as Shaft.

I love these commercials! I can't find where IBM's made them available for download...El, if you grab any more, or if anyone knows where they can be found on the web, I'd love to know. BTW, Timex made their great Tim Burton Kung Fu commercial available at i-control.timex.com, along with other goodies.

Why does everyone call the Matrix a Dark City rip-off? The two movies have nothing on common, other than maybe lighting. Viewing tip for Dark City- if someone's watching it for the first time, tell them to fast forward through Kiefer's crappy, unnecessary narration at the beginning. It tells you nothing you can't figure out for yourself later, which is half the fun of the damn picture. Here's hoping Alex Proyas ends up directing Kaufman's script for A Scanner darkly. That would be so far beyond uber-cool Harry would have to borrow a word from Sanskrit to describe it.

Man, what the hell does this article have to do with Dark City? All someone needs to do is mention the name and you'll have people talking about it. I agree though - I think everyone who has ever seen Dark City and liked it feels like they have uncovered a neglected gem. It is such an incredible film, and has a depth and cinematic weight that The Matrix can't stand up to. The Matrix was fun. Dark City was AWESOME. Not in the California teenage sense of the word "awesome". I mean that it inspired awe, it was so good. I'm going to by the DVD. Did anyone find the prefunctory cropping of almost every shot absolutely brilliant? It sure might have annoyed some, but the way it made me breath more quickly totally pulled me into the unreal mood of the film.
Avery Brooks and Overacting

First of all I think Brooks is a VERY good actor. The first 3 years of Ds9, people complained that Brooks was underacting. Then when the 4th season came around, I think the producers started to make him overact. Bottom line is that overacting is really the fault of the director. If an actor reads his lines and it does not sound right, then the director should make him reread his lines. Also the same thing happened with Patrick Stuart several times as well. "Sarik", "Family", and don't even get me started on that scene in "First Contact".
Avery Brooks & "Trek" acting

Avery Brooks is a fine actor whose skills should not be judged solely on the merits of "Star Trek" and IBM commercials. His performances on stage as Othello (in DC) and Paul Robeson (in NY) were extraordinary. Also, just watched William Shatner again in "Nightmare at 20,000 feet" as part of the July 4 TWILIGHT ZONE marathon on the Sci-Fi Channel and was reminded of what a fine, nuanced performance he is (or, at least, was) capable of giving.
Shatner

Something people tend to forget about the Original Series versus Next Gen is that Shatner and company didn't have the comfort zone that Next Gen and subsequent Trek shows does. Shatner was standing on a goofy soundstage trying to make all this gobbledygook real. He did what 90% of actors can't do - he INVESTED in the reality. Sure he was over the top at points, but by God, he made all those outlandish situations real. The show would have withered with Jeffrey Hunter.

Just because Louis Black mentioned "flying cars" in one of his rants doesn't mean that the IBM commercials are "total and blatant rip offs". I get so effing sick of fanboys ranting about "ripoffs" just because there is some vague similarity to something they saw earlier.
