I really don't like these multiple story/intersecting story movies. They don't feel like real movies. They feel like a hotchpotch of small ideas arbitrarily linked, which is a much easier thing to do than tell one single story for 100 minutes. Sorry but I hope Mr Anderson's next film in *not* one of these multi-stand deals.

Let me say first and foremost that I have an insatiable love for both Boogie Nights and Magnolia (and Sydney, aka Hard Eight), and I believe that PTA is the most promising filmmaker working in Follywood today. My only problem with him is his ego, that seems to be inflating dangerously. This allegation basically stems from his Rolling Stones interview where he trashed David Fincher and his priceless gem Fight Club. I completely respect the fact that everyone has a right to an opinion, but I think it's sad when filmmakers start taking potshots at each other. I could also make the same criticism of Kevin Smith and his View Askew website, who relentlessly trashed Magnolia even though it was blatantly superior to the mediocre Dogma. I lost a great deal of respect for Mr. Smith after reading his Magnolia comments, and I lost a certain margain of respect for PTA when he made the ludicrous statement that he hoped David Fincher would get testicular cancer for making an issue of it in FC. First of all, Fincher didn't write the movie, and second of all, the testicular cancer remarks were consistent with the satrical tone of the movie, and were not meant to be taken seriously. I just wish that every maverick filmmaker in the business would just lighten up and realize that nothing can possibly be gained if they start trashing each other. I am still a die hard fan of Mr. Anderson's, and I know his next film will amaze me just as much as his last three. I still can't tell you how disappointed I was to read the Rolling Stone article, where it made him sound like the majority of the ego obsessed Hollywood "directors" who think that their shit smells like roses.

Hm. I took the whole Monty Python reference as a completely tangental aside, and not at all a tacit revelation that he has something in the works with those fellows; although, that would be quite an interesting collaboration, no? Ah, MAGNOLIA..... I do love a film that's attempting to express the ineffable, even if it is three hours long. Good show, PTA, but might I suggest a little self-editing in the future?

PTA and Adam Sandler

Hey Harry, ask the great PTA what the story is with him doing an Adam Sandler movie. All great directors have lapses of taste. Even Scorsese did a movie with Jerry Lewis but, wait, the King of Comedy was a great film. Is this what PTA is thinking of doing with Sandler? Aimme Mann did a chat online a little while ago and even she had harsh words for the idea of PTA wasting his talent on this idiot. PTA, I'm talking to you now! I dare you to make a movie with Adam Sandler that is not pathetic. I want to see it and I'm sure you can do it but, hey, come on do you really think "The Waterboy," and "Billy Madison" will even exist in 20 years. They will have been laughed away on the same sinking ship that carries the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin and Britney Spears. A Monty Python movie? Now that's a different fucking story. We all want to see that and, as you know you fucking know, Adam Sandler is no Monty Python, no matter how funny he was on SNL.

once i saw one of his movies, and about 4/5th the way through the film, it rained frogs. havent we all wondered what a movie would be like if the ending was totally crazy like if a love story was cut short due to all of their small town of heroshima blowing to bits, or if the romantic comedy took place in the world trade center right before it blew up. well, this movie was heading toward some sort of connection between all the characters, like i thought all the characters would end up eating at the same resturant or something like that for the ending, somehow bringing them all together for a tight finale. but we dont get that, we get a plague of frogs, and i will never forget how loud i yelled when that first frog slammed on top of the car and how, once i realized it was raining frogs, i wanted to scream with joy "my god! its raining frogs!" paul, you blew me away and i will see any movie you make for the rest of my life.

Regarding the Fincher fiasco, how do you attack a movie that viciforously even though you acknowledge that you walked out after 20 minutes. I know cancer is an incredibly touchy subject but, if you can't joke about it, it owns you. Furthermore, if I left Magnolia after 30 minutes (and before Mackey's weepy backstory explained his sexism), wouldn't we all be permitted to conclude that PTA is a misogynist scumbag. Of course, I would never make such an infantile accusation, but I think PTA did this with Fincher/Fight Club. Oh well...I hope PTA gets his sense back and views Fight Club in its entirety or, at the very least, RECORDS A FUCKING COMMENTARY FOR THE MAGNOLIA DVD. PTA! come on! We love your previous commentaries (I've heard 4 and he only did 2 movies previously) and I think we all loved your email here so, just do it, if it's not too late. good lord. know first that i adore pta's three films. all extraordinary in some way. all wonderfully realized tapestries of specific worlds. all beautifully directed. all could have used better scripts. pta says, in his introduction to the published screenplay of boogie nights, that his job as a director basically amounts to writing a kick-ass script, then sitting back, [smoking a joint], and letting the actors flex their acting femors. well, let me say this about that: first off, pta smokes a lot of weed. (you who haven't actually seen this want evidence? check out the above email he sent to aicn. can anyone say bong hits?) but that's all besides the point; look at the guy's movies: pta's mind is out there, ladies and tools -- the guy has ingested so much herb that he now lives entirely in these little geek underworlds he creates -- and all i can force myself to mutter between my 'wows' while watching works like magnolia and hard eight is this: jesus, dude, fix the script. i mean, just tighten it up a little. nothin major: you still want to be the god that is pta. but please, just show a bit of fucking restraint. otherwise, you are a true god among men. (one last thing, paul: you are a gifted writer -- of that we have no doubt -- albeit in an idiot savant type of way. so please, fix the email just a tad: "pppppssspspspsp"??? what *is* that, bro?)

Everyone knows you got snubbed hardcore at the Oscars, but fuck'em...who cares, write something "again" that will fuck their minds up. Nuff said...I'm out.

The pre-title sequence to Magnolia...
by agentcooper
May 15th, 2000
12:19:44 PM
...Set up the film as being about coincidence and irony. The post-title film was about neither. It was about many characters who were all interacted over the course of a day. The film has an energetic feel and great performances, and is very watchable, but it never decides exactly what it is about. Is it a cautionary tale about parent-child relationships? Is it a story about the wrath of God? Is it an excuse for a talented young man to show off nifty camera-work and a flair for dialogue? It's all of the above. I liked the film, but feel that it would have been better with more focus. Kinda like Anderson's e-mail to Harry.

Look, with all due respect to the fans out there, I see no need to give P.T. here a bigger ego than the one he currently lumbers around Hollywood. Anybody self-respecting director who thinks they can lambast David Fincher in the manner he did -- after watching only TWENTY MINUTES of Fight Club -- hardly deserves anything but chagrin from this corner. Let's take Magnolia, a ridiculously overrated and overlong film. I'll be the first to admit that the acting was universally good, and P.T. deserves credit for giving his cast a free reign of the material. But the screenplay...ugh. Watching Magnolia reminded me of reading an unpublished novel by a marginally talented and terminally egotistical high school sophomore stoner. The characterizations were dense, plodding and unrealistic, every scene was 3-5 minutes too long (most notably the quiz show part in the middle hour), and the ending felt like a completely tacked-on amphibius-ex-machina. And, flamers, let me go ahead and preempt your 3000-word essays on how I was too shallow to "get" the underlying themes of transgression, redemption, families real and imagined, etc. etc. I got it, and it was completely pretentious and overblown. P.T. may be the only filmmaker in Hollywood who needs a screenwriter (and editor) more than George Lucas. As for Boogie Nights, here's another movie with excellent performances that was at least twenty-thirty minutes too long and definitely could benefit from more subtlety and more succinctness. Buying a steadicam and ganking shots from Scorsese/DePalma does not an auteur make. "I'm silently judging you..." Please.

...Whatever it might be. I thought Boogie Nights was a really cool, different kind of movie. But, in 1999, a year full of lots and lots of great films, Magnolia was the cream of the crop! I was so pissed that it didn't win an Oscar. Anyway, I can't wait for whatever Paul does next. Although, Harry did post something a while back about the possiblity of a musical... hopefully that's out the window (unless maybe it's somehow related to Python -- that might be cool).

I saw Mr. Anderson at UCLA, when he came to Melnitz to introduce Ace in the Hole. He was funny, articulate, and extremely cute, and I wanted to talk to him after the show and tell him how much Boogie Nights rocked, but he booked out of there as soon as the movie started. I have to say that I like and admire him, but these ego stories that have been floating around are really disturbing. I just finished Easy Riders, Raging Bulls (sensational book, I recommend it to everyone), and I can't help but be reminded of another director whenever Mr. Anderson rags on another filmmaker or looks shocked at the Oscars when his screenplay was passed over for the award. If y'all will recall Peter Bogdanovich was hot for a while (Last Picture Show, Paper Moon), but then sank under the weight of his own ego. It happens to a lot of directors, in fact. P.T., please don't let all the good reviews go to your head, or you might end up in the Phillipines like Coppola, 40 days behind shooting schedule and wondering how the fuck you got there. pppppppssssppspsp: you were right about Ace in the Hole, it was terrific.

Now I'm thinking he acts so defensive and arrogantly about his movies because of the way Hollywood works. Perhaps he's fighting fire with fire, so to speak. And what's with the whole Scott Rudin thing? I've read quite a few interviews with Trey Parker and Matt Stone (two fellows who aren't afraid to name names and talk shit) and they go on and on about how great Rudin is and how the South Park movie could never have been made without him. Anyways, it's not that big of a shame that PTA isn't gonna be making Underworld. Some novels should stay novels, and I think Underworld is one of those. I'm sure no one could have made a film adaptation of it better than PTA, but...

ADVICE--pt stop making soundtracks accompanied by a film. I know you've probably seen a lot of movies ...howbout borrowing from ozu, cronenburg or i dunno herzog....just no more scorsese. About the directors that talk badly about other directors. Well, PETER BOGDANOVICH spoke bullshit abou SERGIO LEONE. This is an unforgiving sin against one of the most underrated genius(and I don't use genius so much) of cinema!!! PETER BOGDANOVICH is a good filmmaker, but he judged LEONE'S films for the person that he was, not by the films that he did. P.T.A. critics against DAVID FINCHER are also stupid. I love the work of both. I admire P.T.A. and I don't admire Fincher. I understand why P.T.A. is unconfortable with FINCHER. Iso not because of violence. It's because of language(sp?). ANDERSON is a cinema freak. A cinema creator. He breaths and produces cinema. He loves cinema. DAVID FINCHER is a very good director in his own right, but lousy in cinema. So. I think P.T.A. is uncoonfortably with FINCHER because of that. But he just can't say that. He can't find the words(?). About P.T.A. copying BRIAN DePALMA e SCORSESE'S CAMERA WORK(I know it wasn't you JET). I guess that by that standard, SCORSESE is not a genius because he uses things from WELLES, TRUFFAUT, HITCHCOCK and OPHULS. About DEPALMA? I Am sorry, but even a begginer like P.T.A. is superior to him.

How exactly is PTA such "outstanding" director. Every single one of his films are worthless piles of excrement. Boogie Nights is the perfect example. Horrible HORRIBLE performances that were incouraged by mr. anderson himself. Putting a fictional spin on the life of John Holmes and pretending it was a nostalgic look at the melodramatic life style of porn stars during the seventies was plain fucking pathetic. Everyone who had no clue went around touting on how "deep" this film was. For crying out loud, this man put a twelve inch prosthetic penis on Marky Mark, and you praise him for it? And Magnolia, dear cthulu that movie sucked. 3 hours to display how all these losers needed "redemption." I could have done that in half a minute and annoyed the audience far less. The dialouge... what the hell were they saying in that movie? "Ummm... yeah, do you have any hustler... umm...kay..." This level of bad dialouge is only paralleled by Showgirls. "I used to eat dogfood, I liked doggy chow. 'yeah, I liked doggy chow too.'" So if you like movies with obvious points, unoriginality galore, the worst possible dialouge, and big prosthetic cocks, then Paul Thomas Anderson is your man. The man destined to be the next Joel Schumacher.

This talk back feature on this site allows everyday joes such as myself to say their opinions, anonymously, and possibly reach those we admire. Very cool. The down side of this is some dick always brings up fight club and its DEEP influence on the disenfranchised. I enjoyed the film very much until it channeled all the frustration of the characters into a dumb club chaos or whatever the fuck. I would appreciate and explanation of the films intentions without the word irony or frustration in it. Give it a whirl fuckheads.

Why Boogie Nights and Hard Eight are Better than Magnolia
by MagnoliaMan
May 15th, 2000
06:06:46 PM
Personally, I believe in what Scorsese once said: (paraphrasing) 'don't think about a movie while you're watching it, just watch and if you like it figure out why.' That's why so many of us love bad zombie movies and blazploitation, etc. They make us feel good. What I'm saying is themes can be interesting but they don't make or break a film. When people say they liked the energy of Magnolia but didn't think it was cohesive enough are looking at it incorrectly, as are those who think PTA's movies would suck without the music. Energy, tone, etc, are what make films and its about time that people stop reviewing literature and start reviewing filmmaking. Anyway, regardless of my love for Magnolia, I think PTA's first 2 are better because PTA is much more subtle in those films. I really connected with the characters in those ones because they weren't always telling me how they felt, I had to observe it myself. Back then PTA seemed to be a student of Mamet and Towne (people who recognize the importance of subtext, without overpowering the story with thematic "weight"). Now, with Magnolia, he's a lazy writer, and the dialogue sounds like the best soap opera ever. I love the movie but I'm simply listening to the characters thoughts about themselves (ie. Robards, Moore, Reilley, Walters, Macy). The really great performance is Cruise's because the script lets him hide things. He's lying the whole time and hiding himself, rather than giving us a series of Coles notes distillations of his emotional autobiography. This is the sort of thing that made Boogie Nights and Hard Eight so much greater. Oh yeah, Scott Rudin needs some respect. He may be an asshole but in the last 2 years he's produced Sleepy Hollow, The Truman Show, Wonder Boys, Bringing Out the Dead and many others. That's easily the best track record of any producer working right now. I don't think PTA needs him, though. I've heard that Joanne Sellar is really great and accomodating, anyway.

I think I'm pretty far down in the talkback right now so I don't know if anyone will be reading this or if they'll just consider it to be a reply to an above post, but sure. Anyways. Ever since watching Boogie Nights on HBO Late Night, I've been ESTATIC about movies.... that movie is a freaking... masterpiece is an understatement. WAY WAY WAY of an understatement. And then I saw Magnolia. This was a movie that I thought would never happen. Something better than Boogie Nights. All of these movies.... they're the best. I'm only a 16 year old, but I think I could SERIOUSLY relate to Dirk Diggler (hey, you know... my cock is big) and Magnolia... well. uh, Ive fallen out of the sky before and hit a gun, preventing someone form committing suicide. BUT, god dammit, these films rock. THey have inspired me in so much of a way. I'm sure some of you reading this right now... you know.. Just because Scorsese busts out a tremendously long stedicam shot, that doesn't mean it's off limits for every other director. How many derivative camera shots were used in "Swingers," for Christ's sake? Back to pta, even if you don't like his work, you've got to give the man props for making the movies he wants to make. Look at Shakespeare, where the play ends, but carries on a little bit afterward. The characters of "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia" are still roaming around, coping with their lives. Nothing was tied up with pretty bows and exploding spaceships. pta wants to make a movie with people singing, and he does. He wants to make a movie with a Chinese kid flinging firecrackers, and he does. The man wants his raining frogs, and he damn well gets them. How often do we get to see a director's vision uncompromised? Love him or hate him, he never sells out to make the studio happy. I give him total respect for his intense and personal visions, and it just so happens, I love his films.

I don't think it's pathetic that people are using this talkback to express their gratitude to PTA on the off chance that he might be reading. This is one of the great things about Talkback. Everyone has some book, music, movie, whatever that knocks you upside the head (in a good way) and articulates something you always already knew in a particularly evocative way, so that you walk back into the world renewed and transformed, with a higher emotional IQ. Well, Magnolia was one of those things for me and many others, and if we have some way of saying thanks to the man responsible for that, there's nothing wrong with taking it and it doesn't mean we're trying to get invited to some big ole director's mansion. So if PTA is reading this, thank you thank you a million times more, and if he's not, now ya'll talkbackers know I love Magnolia.

PTA rules. I remember sneaking in to see Boogie Nights at the theatre and being blown away. Paul, if you are reading this, I have your next film for you. I co wrote a screenplay for a dirty teenage comedy called BEAVER HUNT...trust me, this should be your next film...it's gonna be amazing!

i've enjoyed pta's films, a great deal really. not that they are perfect, but nothing much is. im not scared off by the possibility of a musical. But what i would love to see someone do is a hip-hop/rap/r+b musical. the genres lend themselves so well to relaying tales of life that they would be a natural fit. why isn't someone putting one together now?
