I know, I know, that was trite, but it had to be said. I don't know what it is, but this really appeals to me. I mean, you've got Haley Joel Osment, inarguably the best child actor in Hollywood, and Jude Law, arguably one of the best actors of his generation, teaming up with Frances O'Connor, who's going to be a big star herself someday, and Steven Spielberg (need I say more?), and they are working from a concept that came from the greatest filmmaker of this or any other time. This is going to be a phenomenal movie.

Law, O'Conner and that 'dead people' kid, this sounds like a great movie and maybe the kind of movie which spielberg will actively direct for a change (like schindlers list or empire of the sun), instead of just putting the camera in the right place and yelling action (The Lost World anyone? or Amistad: tried too hard, lost that balance between fluid direction and good story telling and engaging action). He's due another doozy.

Spielberg? Making the right decisions? My God, the world is changing. My favorite new actor (Jude Law), my favorite new actress (Frances O'Connor) and a damn good child star (guess), all in one Stanley Kubrick-originated flick? This can't be true. This is too good to be true. (Although I did want him to do Minority Report first) Yes, and Frances O'Connor is one hot mama! It's lube time!

I'm sorry, but I have to argue with that. Watch Magnolia again, and tell me that Jeremy Blackmon as Stanley didn't act wide circles around Billy Joe Osmond or whatever his face is. No contest. That's not to say that Haley Joel Osmont (yeah I know his name, who doesn't by now) isn't a fine actor, but I wouldn't bet on him in a steel cage match against the kids from Cider House Rules or anything. Hey--there's a thought...Osmont, Blackmon, and Jonathan "The human head weighs eight pounds" Lipnicki vs. The Cider House Rules boys in "Ready To Rumble 2"! Somebody get DeLuca on the phone...

Lucas seemed to have a recepie for success, but turned out a steamy load. My money goes with this movie being cosmically disappointing, if only for the fact that Speilberg will be trying the whole time to make it as good as Kubrick would have.

Frances O'Connor is a great actress, LOVE AND OTHER CATASTROPHES is a superb film. I think that with O'Connor and Jude Law AI has what is looking to be a top cast. Maybe Spielberg won't make a pigs ear out of Stan's project. I still wish Stan was alive to do it himself though.

there's no way to judge the quality of a film conclusivly by looking at the people involved. There have been plenty of shit heaps created by groups of highly talented individuals and if assuring quality was as simple as throwing together creators who have achieved great things elsewhere then no-one would ever make a bad movie. Having said that, this movie is shaping up with some very favourable odds. So cool to hear that fellow Australian O'Connor is hitting the big time. Kiss or Kill rules.

What in hell's name are you talking about, "comeback"? I'm referring to the first post's title. What comeback? Did you not see Saving Private Ryan? Sure Lost World sucked but what's that, like one out of maybe three bad movies he's made. I'm sick of people who say, "oh the first half hour of Ryan was good but blah blah blah," the whole FUCKING movie blew me away and its a sin that it lost the best picture oscar. If Spielberg hasn't proven himself by now with movies like, Ryan, Shindlers list, Jaws, ET, all the Indiana Jones', Jurassic Park, Close Encounters, I don't know if he will ever prove himself. Give me a break, "comeback".
Looking good, folks.

Please, please, please let this be Spielberg's return to the child-like qualities of "E.T.," "Close Encounters," and "Jaws." (Ok, that last one wasn't child-like so much as it was just plain cool.) That quality, the material itself and the fact that Kubrick's touch is all over the project to begin with will make for a fanboy's wet dream of a film. In other words, from this great start, this movie looks like a winner! Here's hoping the good work continues into the production.***BTW, that is a really good picture. I like the whole standing on books thing going on there. Will she be playing the mother?

We should be glad that this movie is making it to the screen at all. Its not as if Kubrick's idea is so holy that it can't be touched upon by other people. The man did make some amazing flicks (okay, EWS was kinda doggy), but that doesn't give the right for all of his ideas to die with him. And we should be thankful that a director like STEVEN SPIELBERG is doing it not Joel Shumacher. Count your blessings, fanboys, and stop whining.

I mean Hook wasn't so hot, and I'm not partial to the Color Purple, but then I haven't been able to watch it all the way through(and to be fair, I've never seen Always, or The Sugerland Express, or 1941). But man, the rest were all good! Oh wait, Lost World kinda stunk, but nobody's perfect. Why do people still attack Amistad(McCouneghy DID NOT ruin that film) or Jurassic Park or whatever films they think the critics didn't support and is thus "okay" to be trashed? Amistad was a good movie. Empire of the Sun was a good movie. Even Jurassic Park was decent. And frankly, I don't think Kubrick was mister great auteur, his last two movies sucked(and he didn't make any for a loooooong time). The same cannot be said of Spielberg.

Frances O'Connor is great. I really love two of her previous aussie movies. Love and Other Catastrophes (as mentioned) is fabulous and another great film with her in it is Kiss or Kill. 1. I personally think that Kubrick's ideas did die with him. Just becasue he said he wanted to make a movie but died before he made it doesn't mean then next schlep can go and pick it up and say "finders keepers." Spielberg can talk all he wants about how he loves Kurick's work and how they were pals to the end, but in the end to me it seems like Claudius marrying Hamlet's mom. It's just not right. It's like John Williams going and finishing Beethoven's 10th symphony just becasue he knows all about Beethoven's composing style and he thinks its a shame that what he wrote so far won't get heard by the public. you don't see anybody going around and finsihing some author's books after he dies. Nobody finished Da Vinci's unfinished paintings. Why should filmmakers get extra lisence here? Also, I really don't like Spielberg's stuff. Their styles are so completely different that I just can't imagine that what Spielberg will put out could be near as good as what Kubrick would have done or even touch the audience in the same way. And, mentioning Williams, I'd go irate if he did the score for this . . . which almost seems a given with Spielberg helming the flick. Yeah, I loved Kubrick's movies. There was just something that flowed through all of them that nobody else could capture, and the thought of someone going and making a movie that he was supposed to make just doesn't sit well with me.

I can't believe you didn't like "Eyes Wide Shut". OR "Full Metal Jacket". I mean, EWS I can kind of understand, I guess. A lot of people were disappointed in it. But "Full Metal Jacket"? "Full Metal Jacket" was an awesome film. In fact, IMHO, it was second only to "A Clockwork Orange" and "Lolita", which tie for his best. And it's a damn shame that Kubrick died before he could get this movie together because I think it probably would have been his best. The concept is simply awesome and completely in the vein of Kubrick's best stuff: surrealistic, kind of dark, critical of technology. Oh, and to the individual who criticized my choice of Haley Joel Osment as inarguably the best child actor in the world over Jeremy Blackman: WHAT are you SMOKING? Blackman's good I guess, as good as most child actors can be, but Haley Joel Osment truly is, as M. Night Shyamalan has stated multiple times, the FIRST TRUE CHILD PRODIGY THE ART FORM HAS EVER HAD. Watch "The Sixth Sense" again. Most ADULTS couldn't give that performance, let alone Jeremy Blackman.

Without a single MAJOR hollywood star, I think Spielberg is going to be sinking in the millions to the FX rather than actors' salaries. Don't know if that's good ro bad, but it could keep the cost of the movie down enough to the point where he'll make an effort to make an art.

the kubrick collection is a joke. NONE of the films are in widescreen. can you believe that? also, Eyes Wide Shut was trimmed to get an "R" after kibrick died "as per his instructions" says the studio. ok. lets see them. let's see his instuctions written on paper that he left behind. he spent 3 years working on this movie and leaves a few scraps of paper explaining how to edit the film to get an "R"? (which doesn't make sense any way you look at it.) fine. i want to see those scraps. furthermore, on the DVD, it has the balls to say "this film is in letterbox, as per the directors wishes." Bullshit. the director wanted his unrated version on DVD.

I am not a fan of Spielbergs, but I think he is a competent filmmaker. I did not like "Saving Private Ryan", but thought it was stunning to look at. The loss of Stanley Kubrick is a loss to the world of movies that can never be replaced, but what an amazing body of work. I just watched "EWS" again for about the twentieth time, and have to say I think it is one of my favorite movies of all time, and that it is also very beautiful and moving. I bought the Stanley Kubrick DVD box set, and though I would prefer it have more extras and care, I am happy to have the movies in any way I can. I think Warner Bros. is a wretched, money grubbing studio full of half-wit "suits", but what can you do? Spielberg will make a very good version of the film Kubrick would have wanted, because like many of us, he loved Kubrick very much. A lot of you should relax a little and focus on what you love about movies rather than what you hate about them unless of course you are powerful within the industry and can actually make some changes. It is nice to know there are so many people out there who are as passionate about the greatest art form in the world.

...of GREAT Aussie actors infiltrating American movies. Wow, this is indeed cool news of Frances McDormand being cast in A.I. Now, along with that ol' scowler Russel Crowe taking the spotlight in 'Gladiator', Hugh Jackman shining as Wolverine in 'X-Men', Heath Ledger in 'The Patriot' and Toni Collete (dunno how big her role is in 'Shaft' but she has 'The Sixth Sense' on her resume) I'm glad I'm seeing fellow Australians strutting their stuff in Hollywood. My personal fave is Hugh Jackman, who I just cannot wait to see go snickety-snick as Logan. GO AUSSIE ACTORS! And don't listen to bitter compatriots like Bryan Brown, who while at the podium at last year's AFI awards decided to take a dig at those having a shot at American/International films. Just because actors want to broaden their scope of films doesn't mean they're sell-outs! Ok, seeing as I know very little about A.I., can anyone tell me what role Frances McDormand has actually signed on to play? I'm just wondering how long it's going to take for this bit of info to pop up in the Australian media. The Hugh Jackman/Wolverine casting story took about a week. *LOL*

Spielberg knows how to direct films but KUBRICK created a new way of telling a story and a new way of looking at films. A.I. will probably be good and maybe very good but it will never be a GOOD and intelligent film had KUBRICK not died. Spielberg's will be wistful and "wonderful" with some "awe" inspiring music. whereas, KUBRICK'S would of made you think for the next 5 - 10 years. There is something to be said about order and symmetry and exactness that is found in a KUBRICK film. Man, I will miss him. later, Fandude

There was a lovely picture of Frances in one of the local papers here in Melbourne recently. I think she was in the Botanic Gardens or somesuch and looked chirpy and cute as hell. What is it with Oz and New Zealand lately? We are a lucky bunch of bastards and we seem to be producing an inordinate amount of talent. What about a cover and feature article on Vanity or Premiere? Rusty Crowe, Frances, Cate Blanchett, Guy Pearce, Toni Collette, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Heath Ledger, Hugh Jackman and so on, plus directors like Baz Luhrmann and Gregor Jordan (who I'm sure we'll hear more of), cinematographers, costumers etcetera. Gosh. And that's before getting to the o/s productions that are being housed in Oz and NZ over the next few years - Star Wars, LOTR, Matrix 2 and 3 and, erm, that new Anne Rice film. I feel a rosey glow coming on that almost makes me forget that we ever produced Yahoo Serious, 'Welcome to Woop Woop' and 'Crocodile Dundee 2' and remember the golden days of Peter Weir, Phil Noyce (when he could make something like 'Dead Calm'), Fred Schepisi, George 'Mad Max' Miller and Bruce Beresford. Almost.

I know, I know, people still bitch about Jurasic Park(god, the book was great) and the Lost World being eye candy...and that this being an effects film as we know it will be, Steven may just make another Eye candy flick...I don't believe so. He seems to be more after making great films now. Saving Private Ryan was a Masterpiece...as was Shindler's List. Plus if there was a story outline, or a script ( I dunno if there actually was one finished for A.I) I think Spielberg will do the right thing and not make it far from what Kubrick wanted.

When did the Spielberg take over AI? About a year and a half ago I was reading an issue of REZ magazine (digital filmmaking for the arty farty type) and they had concpt sketches by the guy who directed the Window Licker video for Aphex Twin for the AI movie back when Kubrick was doing it (onviously before he died), and the sketches were super cool robot machine things and set designs. Also, wouldn't Haley Joel Osment make the perfect Ender in an Ender's Game Movie, which should be directed by Spielberg, who is the only person that could do that novel justice? PJACK

Steven Spielberg is now directing and it is his movie. Kubrick dumped AI for Eyes Wide Shut (!). So why must Kubrick still remain connected to this project??????
