Batman Beyond isn't as good as the regular Batman cartoon, but it is cool, and in good hands, a live-action translation could rock hard. If Warner Brothers was smart, they'd put Dini and Burnett on the next regular Batman flick too, and give 'em free reign to forget the continuity of the other Bat-flicks.

The problem with converting comics and cartoons to the big screen is the switch from episodes/issues to a single one-shot deal. With a comic, issues are generated quickly enough and often enough that the writers and artists have the time and leeway to experiment a bit, find out what works in the long run and stick with it. The cartoons are a bit tricker because they are more expensive, but once again the writers can play around with the 30-minute blocks in terms of script. They don't have nearly as much to lose, and they get more grabs at the brass ring, so often they end up punching out really great episodes. Obviously, this ends with a movie. When you're crafting something that expensive, and you only have 1 shot at it, invariably all the bankers and financiers want in on the planning sessions. And they turn around and bring in their marketing experts and demographic charts, and you end up with Batman & Robin. The only comic films that came close were the first two Batman, and arguably the first Superman, and even then the director and the studio wrestled over the insertion of big name stars. What they need to do is get together and treat the character, not the medium, as a single unit. Roll the profits from the successful cartoon shows and comics into the film and consider the bottom line based on overall profit, not as independent units. That way people won't be so fixated on the $50 million sunk in the movie since its foundation is financially as well as artistically grounded on the other successful mediums. If you can kick the bankers shouting "More neon! Bigger explosions! Can't we get a super-model or Keanu Reeves to play that?" out of the planning sessions. You still won't have full control of the project, but at least you'd have a shot at getting some real quality to shine through the lacquered hype.

Only THAT can save this franchise from the greatness it had in 1989 with the original. Is anyone else tired of seeing stories about "WELL THEY MIGHT WRITE IT!!!", "THEY COULD BE DOING THAT!!". and, "THEY'RE DOING A TV SHOW!!!"....redundancy is very boring.

I'd love to rent Return of the Joker, though, I can't WAIT to hear Mark Hamill do The Joker's voice again. He does such a great job to get that manicical insanity of the character across, even as good, or better than Nicholson did, IMHO. I saw MASK OF THE PHANTASM recently and it kicked ass. And its even cooler that The Joker is Luke Skywalker! The fanboy geek in me cries out in joy.

This is wonderful news. My one caveat however is whether Dini/Burnett can spin out a feature length screenplay ( ie two hours plus ) given that their speciality is to concentrate events in a 22 minute slot. Whenever an opportunity to be expansive arises, as in 'Mask of the Phantasm' ( a rather more grandiose tale than Batman Beyond ), they seem curiously reluctant to draw matters out beyond one hour. Additionally, past Batman scripts have always tended to fail in the execution than the concept. I liked the idea for Batman Forever ( Bruce Wayne on an elaborate death wish trip ), but what appeared on the screen was a ghastly caricature of the original screenplay.

I agree with Harry (obviously). This would rule and WB WOULD be rich bastards (arn't they already?) Anyway, I don't think that Keanu Reeves would be THAT bad as Batman in BEYOND. I mean, if it's a movie like The Matrix style the he WOULD be good, but I'm not saying a better, slicker actor wouldn't do excellently. Make Batman really dark WB!!!

We all know that the odds of a "correct" version of Batman (or any superhero) are slim to none. Decisions come from finaciers, toy companies, stars, and writers who have no knowledge of what the character is about or why it works. What we would love to see is a rated R Batman in a rated R (possibly XXX) Gotham. Give us a low budget gritty detective drama. Show us a batman who carries lockpicks and thermite in his belt instead of batcuffs. We want to see Batman beating information out of some lowlife in order to save the life of a child. We want to see Bruce put on that mask and to know the fear that he causes to criminals in Gotham. Luckily, we all have a little multiplex in our heads because a movie of value will never be made about any of our favorite characters. (Feel free to prove me wrong Sony & WB, but I won't hold my breath)

Get Tim Burton...or wait...even better..get David Fincher to do the next Batman....have him do real detective work...have a scene where he silently comes into Comissioner Gordon's office (and replace Pat Hingle with Nick Nolte..hey, have nolte grow a mustache and glasses...there's Gordon), then slip out in mid-conversation...have Scarcrow in it...have either Kevin Spacey or Jeff Goldblum play Scarecrow.... get rid of Robin....turn him into Nightwing and make a good dark movie there.....but yeah...most of all...make it friggin dark!!1....the way Batman should be!

I'd love to see Dini and Burnett write the next BATMAN live-action script. But why does it have to be set in Batman's future (BATMAN BEYOND) or Batman's past (BATMAN: YEAR ONE) -- why can't they just write a kick-ass Batman script set in current Batman continuity. The only non-contemporary timeline story that holds any promise is the BRUCE WAYNE live action TV series. Other than that, let Batman be Batman.

Well Harry, I have to say that I do not think this is good news. I love the animation team, but I don't think a live action Batman Beyond makes much sense. After four movies, WB has yet to flesh out Batman. I think that the next movie that should be done is a Year One movie. I would love to see them take the script right from the four issue mini-series. It's about the right length, has a cinema-like feel and would not need to be censored THAT much. However, I also know that there is no way in hell the studio would actually wind up with a good script, no matter what the starting point, so fuck it, just leave Batman off the screen for a decade. Also, note that Dini was approached only for plot ideas. That means the great dialogue that we know and love him for will be added by someone else. The WB has yet to prove it know it's ass from a hole in Robin's underwear when it comes to superhero projects. Let 'em try the lower budget Bruce Wayne, where they might be willing to take a chance on some less "Hollywood" scripts and see how that goes, but let's keep Batman way beyond for now...

While I agree with the fact that the majority of Batman and other animated/comic vehicles have been ruined on screen by the likes of Keanu etc., the screen has the potential to far outshine any animated or panelled work. The beauty of a great comic for me is the license the artists have with the situations and actions of their characters. In a great comic book, Spider-Man can vault from building to building, all the while pondering whatever, as if the fact that he is suspended by a man-made web was nothing at all. Often this has translated badly to the screen (for reference see just about everything) but if it is ever really done well, the results will be spectacular because live-action is that much closer to reality and therefore that much more amazing. When you look at a comic, you know that they are drawings of pencil and ink. But on the screen, with real actors it is that much easier to suspend disbelief. THE MATRIX is the perfect example of this. The sheer amazing nature of all of the effects was enhanced by the fact that they were people up there on screen. The point of all this, is that I am dying to see a Batman movie, and also hopefully a X-Men movie, that can live up to the promise of the franchise and deliever on screen. It is possible, they just need the right people. If all the good news about BRUCE WAYNE is correct, they might be getting closer. I sure as hell hope so. We have all waited long enough.

I'm only going to say this once: I AM SO SICK OF ALL THIS BATMAN BEYOND SHIT!!!!!!!!!! Does anybody but ME remember what Batman is all about? Does anybody but me remember that BAtman Beyond is a "what if" storyline and NOT fact in the DC universe? Does anybody but me think that BAtman Beyond is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME, being how everything that we liked about BAtman IS NOT THERE ANYMORE! I think Beyond is an ok cartoon, that has its moments, and ITS REALLY BAD EPISODES("Rats" "Terry's Friend Dates a Robot" and many more)And I just feel like this Beyond show, is just as bad as letting good ol' Shoemaker direct another Bat flick. Why? Because it basically ends all ties to the one and only Batman. Do you really think that after the BB movie comes out that anybody will ever return to Bruce? HELL NO! HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO BET BRUCE WILL DIE IN THE MOVIE??????? HOW MUCH??? It's crap! All crap! I'm a huge Batman fan, and the animated shows (B:TAS, TAB&R, B:TNAS)have been the coolest thing to come to this planet since jelly beans! But with BB, the original series is GONNA BE CANCELED(COme on, it has been on re-run hell for 2 years now, they are going to cancel it eventaully), and we(I am talking about the hard-core fans)are going to loss all true BAtman storylines. The maybe gonna happen/maybe not Bruce Wayne tv series is my only hope for the character. These are the facts - Warner Bros. have narrowed the direction they want to take BATMAN 5 down to two versions - YEAR ONE or BATMAN: THE JOKER'S REVENGE (which Keanu IS preliminarilly connected to, despite what anyone else says). BB is no longer in the running, and indeed, was never seriously considered as a contender. Dini/Timm/Burnett being connected to a live-action BB movie is false. Dini admitted just a few short weeks ago that he'd never heard of such a film, andd now he's supposed to be writing it? No way. It also looks like the "Bruce Wayne" TV show is doomed as well, whether it's a good idea or not. I personally haven't read the pilot script or the series bible, but the premise sounds iffy to me.

I didn't consider this until just a few seconds ago. Without the superhero element involved in a long-running series such as Bruce Wayne, when he finally DOES don the cowl, is anyone going to care? Hey man, I understand what you mean when it comes to superheros being all white people. But did you know that Batman has been around since the 60s? You can't just make him African American or Hispanic just because you want to appeal to the minorities of this country. I mean, I'm not racist, but I dont think comicbook superheros should have the same system as some jobs do, where minorities are hired dispite qualifications sometimes. Anyhow, if you want to know some more African American heros: ---In the Batman universe, one of the MOST important side characters to Bruce Wayne, not Batman, is Lucius Fox. THink of it this way, if Bill Gates was better looking he would grace all the magazine covers. And now think of Bill Gates not really running the Microsoft, but merely over seeing it all. That is what Bruce Wayne is like. True, he owns Wayne Enterprises, but he doesn't always run it.....actually, he pretty much slacks off, and his ownership is only on paper. Now Lucius Fox is Wayne's right hand man and he runs the whole joint. Why is Lucius so important? Well if there was no Lucius, Batman couldn't exist because Bruce wouldn't have the time anymore to be Batman. Lucius doesn't know Bruce is Batman, but Lucius and his family are good friends of the Waynes(When they were alive of course)and Lucius covers for Bruce. I'd say Lucius is the third most important side character(Meaning he isn't a crime fighter in a costume)next to Alfred and Commissioner Gordon. ---Anyhow, there's Blade as you mentioned. ---Bishop from the X-Men, he can time travel and has cool powers. ---Steel from the superman universe(Yes this is the same Steel that got a movie with Shaq playing him, I didn't see the movie, but I doubt it stayed true to the character)is really cool too. He was in the animated Superman show and he is a trusted friend and partner to ol' Sups. ---Storm from the X-Men ---And then Laurence Fishburn from the MAtrix was awesome as hell! I REALLY hope he returns for MAtrix 2 and 3. Yeah, you are right about there being so many white superheros, and in all honesty, the reason is because so MANY superheros were created so long ago(Superman, Batman, The Flash, the X-Men, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, etc)in a time in the 20th century where african americans were still fighting segregation in schools. So it was just too long ago for African Americans to form their own superheros. I dont agree with it, I also hope to see more superheros of other colors(Especially, HiSpanics and NAtive Americans, cause I couldn't think of any superheros of those nationalities! There might not be any!)but again, the most popular superheros have been around so long and that's why they are all white. In conclusion, I agree with you but I still dont think BAtman should be changed. What is, is. we'll see more variety in the years to come. The lack of minority superheros is something that I, as an African-American, have long noticed. I hope to help change that when I get my own comics going soon--I've got ideas for several African, Asian, African-American and Hispanic heroes which I'm setting in a more believable world then what you see in the DC and Marvel universes. Think WATCHMEN if ya wanna know what I'm aiming for. For example: why are all the superbeings American or (maybe) British? What about places like Africa, South America. . .and Iran? What if there were an Iranian equivilant of Superman who decided to help his government spread Islam throughout the middle east and destroy Israel? To us, sure, he'd be a villan, but to the Iranians (and many Arabs) he'd be a hero. And what if one of the superbeings in, say, China or the US decided he or she could run the country better and just took over? Who could stop him/her? And what about all the aliens in the comics you see (the Shi'ar, etc)? Why don't the various nation states have diplomatic relations with them, trade for arms, technology, etc? Makes you wonder what such a world would look like, eh?

Can I play?! Can they make good quality comic book movies! Yes they can and have! What about the Crow, Dark City, Superman, Masters of the Universe, Robocop, Conan, Stormriders, T2, and others of their ilk. Yes I know that some of these films are not comic books, but they were clearly inspired by comics! Any comic book can be translated to film or T.V. ... it depends on the creative force behind it! There have been some bad comic book films , but there have behind some very questionable choices behind these films. Remember when they made the Punisher and the director said he didn't even know who the character was. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT! And I'm not saying that every writer or director should be a comic book geek ... rather, I would like to see some people who respect the material. The first Batman is not a success in my eyes ... but I will give Tim Burton a lot of credit for respecting the material and trying to fit the images and theme into his own particular style. Did I care for Keaton as Batman? NO! I did not... BUT, once again Burton gave some damn good reasons for his choice. He wanted someone who you would least expect to be Batman to BE Batman. Not a 6 foot plus guy who could just thrown on a mask and beat the HELL out of criminals. Good pitch ... but... BATMAN wanted to dress up as a FLYING RAT to scare the shit out of criminals!!!!! Do we need a another Batman film?! I wouldn't mind , if its good! NO! I do not want to see BATMAN BEYOND! I would prefer the DARK KNIGHT! To the person who said that comics and cartoons can compete with the screen/film. Yeah right ... you can have the Matrix and I'll take Watchman ... you can have the Mummy ... give me Alan Moore's Swamp Thing ... Take Batman Beyond and give me Kingdon Come!!! There are several comics that KICK major ASS ... SANDMAN, HELLBLAZER, THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR, PREACHER, PLANTERY, AND ETC. There are some comics "WATCHMAN" that cannot be translated properly, because they were setup to be presented in the comic book format. Period! They are by far more well written than this crap we are being fed today, such as (fill in the blank). Should Batman be a man of color ... HELL FUCKING NO!!!! He's white ... someone made a good point about this! If you want to see some characters of color ... there are several characters to choice from ...TIM TRUMAN'S SCOTT ... this would have been a great product ... and the perfect guy would have been BILLY from PREDATOR. Of course there is the Black Panther ... the White Tiger... Jon Stewart ... Thunder bird ... Dr.Light ... Puma (sorry he's a villian) or better yet they can make up some characters and not that BLANKMAN shit! To the person who's starting his own company ... GO FOR IT! I'm a artist myself and I have a good mix of races presented in my stories ... not because I'm a anry black man .. rather I wanted to present a character who happen to be black and I feel that I can present said character with respect. I wil not do some call MALCOM X , AFRO GIRL, MARTIN 10, SISTER GIRL, CAPTAIN AFRICA ... I just HATE that type of shit! Hell a Powerman and Iron Fist film could be kick ass! Anyway that's enough of my bitchin' ... HEY WARRIOR I'LL SEE YA IN HELL!

All minority superheroes. I guess there's not an "iconic" minority superhero. I still think that Black Panther would be cool with Taye Diggs. He even looks like T'challa.

I think The Crow, which is inspired by a comic, is amazing...and i am a far of the comics that have come out.... I diceded to write and illustrate a Crow story with the first African American undead avenger...it will also take place in the 50's. And he is gonna seriously get medevil on some KKK ass.....it's still a work in progress, but i thought aa african american crow was overdue. Oh yeah...im a white dude....if that makes a difference....i didnt think so either.

Hey wait....why dont they use that same guy who does the voice....you know that guy from boy meets world....he does look like him..and get Tommy Lee Jones as Bruce Wayne(a little make up and he's the spitting image)..oh and put jake Lloyd as terry's little brother..they do look a lot like the cartoons...i still havent seen anyone that looks like comissioner gordon.

I have to say that I am a fan of the Batman Beyond cartoon. And I think if the upcoming X-Men movie is as good as the trailer looks (with the exception of Storm's wig), then Warner might almost be forced to come out with something to contest it. And Batman Beyond could be just the thing to jumpstart the ailing franchise.
