While Sam would be the best man for the job, all evidence seems to point towards THE GIFT. With the wattage behind that film (Billy Bob, Cate Blanchett, etc.) it would potentially jeopardize Raimi's standing to toss it aside, if even for a short while. Regardless, we're in for a fun waiting game. -Nick Nunziata http://www.chud.com

Do you figure Sam Raimi will follow in the tradtion of Ron Howard and showcase His bro Ted in each film as Ron does with Clint? I loved Sam in 'Indian Summer'. Does he still direct looking like he hasn't discovered coffee and a comb? I did see "For the Love of the Game" and credit Sam for keeping a Kostner movie under 3 hours. I quess Ash is not superhero? Could have fooled me.

or maybe it will. he will HAVE to back out of the gift. there is absoluetly no way he can do both and give the right amount of attention to both. if both were regular ol character driven films then MAYBE but with the likely hood/necessity of an enormous amount of pre and post on Spiderman there just no way to have it ready a year and a half from now if he has to work on another film that hasn't even started yet. All this "scoop" confirms is that they WANT him, not that they GOT him.
Ditko as conceptual artist !
by RobinP

First off, why did Variety mention "For the Love of the Game"? It's not his best known film........."Evil Dead" is ! Anyhow, let's lobby for Steve Ditko as the conceptual artist on the film. He was, in my mind anyhow THE artist of preference for Spidey. No-one else came close. John Romita who followed him always seemed kinda "flat" in comparison. (Uh......this may not be the time to mention it........but Ditko IS still alive, isn't he ? It just dawned on me that his Spidey work was 35-40 years ago......damn, I'm getting old !)

Raimi "Scoop"

It seems painfully obvious that the chances of Raimi directing the Spiderman flick are slim at best. The Variety article was far from a confirmation that Raimi will direct; rather, it's more like a confirmation that we've all been duped by a prematurely confident "scoop" again. Ah well, it generated a lively TalkBack anyway...

Now that is a kick-ass flick! Sam plays one HELL of a courtesy clerk in this grocery store horror film. It was directed by Scott Spiegel, but is very much in the Raimi style. Nice shot of a guy dialing the telephone with the camera looking up through the rotary-dial. ALSO, very nice cameo by none other than Mr. Bruce Campbell as a campy police officer towards the end of the film. Check this one out. But I warn you that it is very low budget and has a script as weak as the legs on my coffin encased grandfather. ENJOY!!!!!!!

I am sure that the Spiderman film will be huge, this will set up a chance for a sequel. I think if in the Sequel, Spiderman turned bad and the only one who could save the day turn out to be THE IRON GIANT, it would be a huge blockbuster. Just think of the fights that would take place. And Raimi would be the man for the job. I need to go shave my back now.

"No to Ditko"? Are you nuts?

Listen, I'm a fan of Alex Ross' work myself, but his strength is taking real world photos and turning them into comic world paintings, which is fine. But that's not what I want out of the Spider-Man movie. Is Ditko a recluse? Sure. So what? It's not like Brando is out at the local malls signing autographs either. As for Ditko's work, I *have* seen his recent work, including his pencils. When his heart's in it, it's still as vibrant as ever. But if you want a reason to get him, see either the classic "Sinister Six" storyline in the first Spider-Man annual or issues 31-33 of the series. Spidey and Ditko and maybe even comics at their best.

Ok, just hear me out on this one. Its seems that everyone is in agreement that Doc Oc should be the bad guy in this movie, with the green goblin appearing in the sequel. I am personally a huge Venom fan (He was funny) and would love to see him on screen. But not in the first movie (or the second one for that matter), but what if he was in the third, and I think i have an idea to make it work. First of all, Eddie Brock should be around as the reporter guy (maybe even have the sin-eater story breifly, i dont know). I think this works best for the second movie which is Spidey vs. GG. Maybe the begining has a shot of a meteor or something crashing and some black ooze (like the alien oil from x-files) slimes out and dissappears into the shadows. Anyway, skip to the climax/fight, Spidey cannot defeat GG and the symbiote (sp?) suit and he join and together they overpower GG. So the third movie (or even the end of the second, if that happens in the middle) has the suit trying to take over and spidey escapes it (church bells could work again). We should also have a back ground scene with brock getting fired. Perhaps PP walks into work towards the tail end of an arguement between JJJ and Brock were brock gets fired (i know they worked for different papers, but for cinematic simplicity that can be fudged). This idea (at least i think) allows venom to be entered in and explained very easily and doesnt deal with that whole "secret wars" thing which i never cared for anyway. Any thoughts?

Both the Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety claim 'sources' for providing this... now unless these so called 'sources'can say Sam Raimi IS directing, this could be that Harry's little site may have caused a stir and a 'scoop' of these established trades. No where in either article is there a mention that Sony has signed Raimi to a deal. Only that they WANT to sign him. This only confirms that the media is looking for a story that they may have been 'scooped' on and is trying to get on the bandwagon before anything is inked.

First off, I have to admit that I haven't seen Ditko's recent work. My comment at the end of my earlier post was an honest one, I DID'T actually know whether he was still alive, it's been years since I saw anything of his, but I sure do treasure my reprints of his Spiderman work. Man.......the covers he used to draw.......they were a product of their time. sure, and probably wouldn't appeal to the comic buying youth of today. But dismissing Ditko.......well it's like dismissing Bob Kane from Batman. Sure Neal Adams was better but still......... Hourman........"The Sinister Six" aw jeez, the BEST Spidey story EVER told. The full page spalshes when he catches up to each of the six, the full array of Marvel heroes as it was then appearing somewhere along the line for a panel or two. Great stuff ! They don't make 'em like than any more......more's the pity !

Raimi has more innate understanding of comics in his little finger than anyone who's come close to this project. And he's got a sense of humor which should fit in nicely. (Dennis Farina should play J. Jonah, by the way.) And I second the motion banning Venom. Didn't Venom come out of Secret Wars? Very lame, typical monster stuff. Spidey needs good, warped personalities to bounce off of, not slavering fanged beasts. Hey, I just realized that my dream casting for Doc Ock now has a better chance than ever of actually happening: Larry Drake! He's already worked with Raimi! But if they had to pick a big name, I'd go with William H. Macy. And the guy who should play the Green Goblin is Keith Flint from Prodigy. He'd hardly need any makeup.

Robin, you put your finger right on it with the Sinister Six story I mentioned. The full page splashes are *exactly* what I had in mind, including the classic one where he realizes his powers have returned to him. Dated? Nonsense. :) There's sheer artistic power to be found in those drawings! Even though I read the comic when it first came out, I still remember those images as clear as a bell. How many books can you say that about nowadays? Precious few. If you're looking for someone to give you visuals, I would think getting someone who delivers something you'll remember fondly 35 years from now would be a good thing. :) And I still think that the storyline of fighting Doc Ock in issues 31-33 with the highlight of him moving that machinery off is back is the very essence of what Spidey's about. You could do worse than to follow that plot. By the way, I'm with Jimmer on the "No Venom" thing. Shoot, I don't even want Hydro-Man around there. Then again, I'm not anxious to have the Big Wheel, Rocket Racer, or the Jackel and Clone associated with Spidey anytime either. ;)

particularly if it's going to be directed by an American? I really love Sam Raimi (up until he made a @#$%&# baseball movie) but the fact is that Yankees are seriously inferior when it comes to making kung-fu movies. Would he be getting a Hong Kong action director? I know that Raimi helped John Woo get his start in America with Hard Target. I would like to see Ching Siu Tung or Yuen Woo Ping. Actually, my main problem with the thing is that 1970s cartoons suck big time and anything connected with them is doubtful. What kind of dog will they be using? CGI or animatronic?

I am a little surprised by all of the posts saying what a great director Sam Raimi is.For Love of the Game,Quick & the Dead,Darkman,Crimewave??Not a good one among them!! I liked Evil Dead 1,2,and 3 and also A Simple Plan although all movies had ridiculous gaffs in them that are unacceptable. He hasn't proven he can handle a 100 million dollar movie,or that he can pull the action sequences required. That was the problem with Joel Buttmucher with the gay soft porn Batman 3&4.His idea of action is to have a dildo looking batmobile drive over large naked male statues!Pathetic!!I think Jon Woo is a little to far out,all of the slow motion would increase the running time to over 3 hours. How about Stephen Norrington who did Blade?Perhaps Ridley Scott now that Hannibal is up in the air or his less talented brother Tony?Richard Donner,or even or even Paul Verhoven wouldn't be to bad. Both guys have made some stinkers but also some good movies also.David Fincher has made one good film Fight Club and three ordinary ones.I hope they cast an unknown as well for the lead.Hollywood doesn't take the chance on an unknown anymore.Christopher Reeves wasn't a proven star when he did Superman(Best comic film)but he fitted the part perfectly.
But the villians....
by Saulot
Jan 10th, 2000
05:38:35 PM
The first villian for Spiderman should be Doctor Octopuss, agreed? The Green Goblin could make in into the sequel, but he, Venom, and Carnage all have exstensive back stories which _do_ need to be flushed out. Mysterio, the Kingpin, and Vulture would be cool to have, but unfortuneatly might not make it until the 4th of the series. By that time, Schumacher or Sonnefield will somehow have taken control of the franchise and made the movies unwatchable. Just my opinion--Saulot--

In answer to the previous posters: 1. I believe they are using an actor in makeup for this one. However, the makeup my be partial CGI. No confirmation on who the actor will be. 2. The theme song will be used. 3. There will be some changes to his character. Instead of being an idiot, he is highly intelligent with incredible martial arts abilities. You may recall that in the original series, Penry (Phooey's true identity) had a cat named Spot that actually solved the mysteries, while the bumbling Phooey took credit. It looks like Spot will not arrive on the scene in this movie. He will probably appear in the sequel.

Hourman.......that rings a bell ! Is that the "Master Planner" storyline, where Aunt May who looked about 102 even then, was one one of several deathbeds and Spiderman has to get some antidote or other, and he's in The Master planner's underwater lair with something the size of a nuclera reactor that's fallen across his back after a fight with the Planner who was Doc Ock ? If I remember, that was towards the end of Ditko's stint wasn't it ? Ah, I fondly remember the introduction of Electro, Mysterio, the Vulture.....and....oh, Christ......I can't remember the gangsters......there was a large one, Ox or something......and a judo chopping midget. Now that it seems that a director has been chosen for our friendly neighborhood web-slinger I think it is time to discuss who should play Mr. Parker. I think that there is no better choice than Jerry O'Connell to play the role of good ol' web head. First off, he has the look. Secondly, he has the charm. And for that reason alone he should get the role. Because just as important as his look is his ability to play the friendly smart-ass.

Spidey DOES Shows Emotion
by Brutus
Jan 10th, 2000
08:59:06 PM
Take no offense, BARETTA, but you're wrong. Post-McFarlane artists such as Larsen went to great lengths to try and make Spiderman look more emotional regardless of his "facelessness." Changing the size of his eyes or making very obvious body gestures helped portray the message of body language exceptionally. But you must remember this: in movies, it will be easier to portray emotion through body language because you're not looking at one still moment in time (e.g. a comic book panel).
...isn't this how they used to do brainwashing?
by Graze Zero

09:29:08 PM
First they say or do something to raise your hopes, then they do something to crush them absolutely, then they raise them again, then crush them... eventually, your reduced to drooling vegetable matter. Wow, this IS brainwashing? Harry, i've been coming to this site since forever, and you've been on the ball almost all the time (that i know of), but after the Sonnenfield scoop... i'm sorry, that was one hell of a mindfuck. And then there's this. If this isn't true... if this isn't true... you are in a lot of trouble. Credibility-wise, this could screw in so many ways. And, for all you anti-Raimi talkbackers, go see Darkman. That's the ultimate comic book movie. It doesn't even need to be based on a comic book to be the ultimate comic book movie. Geez, just watch that helicopter scene! SAM-O-CAM, BABY! Not as light-hearted as you want Spider-man to be? Damn straight it isn't. But Raimi can do it. Humor-wise, just go and rent Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. This guy can do the action and the humor. i have faith in him for this. If he does this movie, it will be good. In a perfect world, the fans write and direct the movie, because us fans seem to be the only ones who know what's good for this movie (well, not all the fans... jerry o'connell? geez..). But Sam Raimi would at least make this movie entertaining. We can't trust ANYBODY to do a faithful job, sadly... the Cameron treatment made me foam at the mouth... but Raimi could make it good. Oh, one more thing: Bruce Campbell as the Green Goblin. Think about it. He could be the dark mastermind as Osborn... but when he puts on the Goblin mask (in the third movie, we need build-up dammit), he can go completely insane! Go to his offical website, www.bruce-campbell.com/, he's got a pic of himself with short hair... he's perfect. Just think about it. He seems unlikely, but he's the perfect guy to play the character, dramatically AND physically. Few others can. Especially not Jack Nicholson, anybody who suggests Jack Nicholson is either on crack or just plain stupid. Bruce as the Goblin. Think about it. 'Nuff said. GRAZE ZERO DEAD INJURY out.

What I want to know is when they'll have an "Alf" movie!
by Superman#1

12:44:17 AM
Ed Norton could be in it with David Fincher directing. You could have that dark twisted angle with Alf. Or have Alf in the Matrix with the shades doing flips and firing guns running on walls. Have John Woo direct and Alf with a black trench coat, holding 2 guns firing in slow motion surrounded by white doves. Maybe in Episode 2 Alf can replace Darth Maul with a double edged sabre or hell lets have him as Anakin. Dammit lets go with Fincher and Norton in a Fight Club sequel and have Alf pound the hell out of some people. As far as this Raimi thing goes, it proves nothing until its official from Sony. Remember everyone has been rumored for director, even me, but it means jack squat. Just hope the damn script is good because that's what counts more than anything. You can have a great director, cast, and effects but if the script is crap why bother making it...

I think emotion can be conveyed even though the actor's face is covered. It's all about context. Look at Return of the Jedi, for instance. Darth Vader's "face" obviously never changes, but I'll be damned if I didn't feel the emotions raging in him as the Emperor was laying the smack down on Luke. Emotion doesn't always have to come through facial expression. There's the music score, the actor's stance, the framing of the shot, the action of the particular scene - any number of contributing factors. That's one of the reasons why a director like Sonnenfeld would be all wrong for this film. Wild Wild West aside, I like his work, but I wouldn't say that I've ever had an emotional reaction to anything he's done. I was enterained, but not involved, and that's what Spiderman is all about. He's one of us, in a way, and we're supposed to sympathize with that.

I just watched The Quick and the Dead. I had the idea from Talk Back here that the movie was so bad that it was embaressing to watch. It seems as if the people saying this are either: 1, indifferent to speaking the truth vs what will get people to notice their message; 2, really young and/or still too inexperienced to appreciate art that is not kosher to American Cinema 101 rules; 3, saw the this movie when they were still #2 and haven't realised that their opinion was based on a narrower and less rich world view; or 4, they want someone else to direct and will pick at the "faults" of anyone else, or even anyone they don't envision to make SpiderMan... cause i really enjoyed the Quick and the Dead just now on DVD, I thought it was a little bit less than smooth during some scenes.. especially in relation to how very smooth the rest are, but I liked it. I thought it was something interesting and original and clearly fun for the film maker who directed it. I can't see any reason to be anything but between optimistically hopefull to excited and relieved that Sam Raimi is directing SpiderMan. Also, I think that Leonardo would make a pretty great SpiderMan.. he can act, so that means that he can act like Peter Parker and not just like a preteen heartthrob.. and besides him I think that Elijah Wood would be perfect as Peter Parker, except that it seems that it would be hard for him to appear to have some of the intensity that Peter Parker has, when he gains some confidence, because his eyes seem a little too "I am a deer in a head light right now" but besides that I think that he would be perfect. Of course as Teenage SpiderMan.
if they're doing Hong Kong Phoey, they better do...

Here's the real dirt. There are currently two people up for grabs for the spidey role and they don't really "match." According to the word at the agency I work at the top contenders are Brendan Fraser and John C. Reilly (who Sam worked with in 'For Love of the Game'). That's the dirt. Go to it.
MAKE IT NOW, because...

Marvel is near bankruptcy again. If we don't make this movie now, there might not be a Marvel to liscense this film. Of course it could be a huge bidding war for Marvel soon. Damn that Age of Apoclypse for being too damn GOOD for the companies sake!

HUH?????!!?!!!!?!?!! These two guys are all wrong. Reilly is too weird looking and Brendan Fraser is the worst male actor working today.
Darknight, I stand corrected.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is one of the best movies ever AND Sam Raimi is better than John Carpenter. So maybe it could be good.

What do you think about Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin? Just a suggestion.
The Case For Mysterio (Oh, and Robin, You Were Right Once Again)

Robin, once again, you've hit the nail on the head, regarding the Master Planner storyline. Just everything that you're looking for in a Spidey story. Also, the gangsters you remember were The Enforcers. Fancy Dan, Ox, and Montana (originally led by the "Big Man"). And something just hit me while reminiscing over old villains. I'm thinking Mysterio would be the PERFECT villain for a high budget Spidey movie! Think about it. His whole schtick is that he's a former stuntman turned movie special effects guy. Think what it would be like if a villain took over Industrial Light & Magic! Holy Cow, what you could do in a high budget movie staggers the imagination! Granted, it might have to be done for a second Spidey movie, once he's introduced to the public, but... Sure is something to think about, isn't it? :)
Spidey got a director WOO HOO!

Even if Variety is wrong. It is a step closer to finally making this picture. I was thinking Morgan Freedman as Robbie Robertson its just a thought. But if Raimi is going to direct it. I hope the Bruce Campbell nuts get off because He IF HE IS GOING TO BE IN THE MOVIE HE AINT GOING TO SPIDEY. Jeez anyway I'm glad to see the movie is going to be made in my lifetime. As a formerly disgraced NBC sports caster who is now back on tv would say YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
