I still can't believe how they butchered it, Harry. I love Romero's Dead trilogy with a passion. The sheer thought of someone going back and creating a travesty like this is unthinkable! When I heard about this whole thing a while back, I could already smell something bad, and it wasn't the zombies! Good for you, Harry, tell the world what John Russo has done to a classic film. Boycott the DVD and the VHS version folks! Oh, and all John Russo products as well. I love Night and especially Dawn of the Dead as well, and I never thought I would see the day when a video copy was better than the DVD. Speaking of Night of the Living Dead, do yourself a favor and go see a great film out right now called Stir of Echoes. Too bad this film is getting overlooked from the Sixth Sense hype that has overtaken this great nation.

Speaking of which: you should start a "Night 30th DVD and VHS Collection Drive." I'm serious. Have everyone send their copy to you. When you amass enough copies, have yourself a good ol' Texas cookout. Light 'em up like the posse lit up the ghouls in the REAL version of the film. Harry, when I first heard about this thing I said "bad fucking idea", I even posted a message on the NOTLD website (back in '97) saying so. I had just shown my short 'Twilight Zone' style horror film to Bill Hinzeman at a local University, when he mentioned it and at the time, I thought it was going to be just a THX re-mastered theatrical release. Later, I heard that John Russo was going to 'Lucas' it up and just about exploded into a rage. Restored original footage would have been acceptable, but changing the narrative, adding a new score- can you imagine doing this to a film like HALLOWEEN, and how badly it would fuck it up? I mean, I pretty much hated the new editions of STAR WARS enough that I'll never let them near my VCR or DVD player. Well Russo pretty much eviserated NOTLD and turned it into one of the typical Scream Queen/Market Square hack fests that reflect so badly on the horror genre. John Russo, if you really would like to make money and re-establish your name, get rid of the Tits and Ass, put NOTLD behind you and actually craft a SCARY FILM. Do something that is atmosphereic and gets under the viewers skin- fuck the sex and gore formula! (well, some well-done gore is permissable, if done by Tom Savini....) Doing something like this to NOTLD is akin to Alan digging up 'Orville' and degrading his corpse in CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS, an INFINITLY better film compared to this new 'interpretation' of NIGHT. You made CHILDREN look like CITIZEN-fucking-KANE! I truly hope that, as a reaction to this, Romero will kick his TWILIGHT OF THE DEAD into high gear and fucking tear a new 'hole into the contemporary horror genre. Until then, I'll keep watching the classics like the original NIGHT, DAWN OF THE DEAD, HALLOWEEN, BLACK CHRISTMAS, PHANTASM, THE EVIL DEAD and the other masterworks that were made by folks who had the fire, the talent, and the love and respect for the genre to do it right.

Hey.. I gotta admit....I love the dead trilogy better than the Star Wars trilogy so I couldn't wait to see the new 30th anniversery of Night on DVD. I almost puked! The new scenes suck, I couldn't believe they messed with the news reports, and Rev Hicks (with his buck ass teeth) is the WORST ACTOR OF ALL TIME!!!!!! The ending didn't make any sense...did they forget there were TWO MORE MOVIES IN THE TRILOGY. I always assumed that Dawn of the Dead took place several weeks after Night...so what was with that ONE YEAR LATER CRAP!?!?!?!? oh well......

It's posts like these that make you want to cry for what people do to good films. I have never seen NOTLD, but I glanced a sequel when I was little and it scared the shit out of me. It sounds like what they did would be like adding a happy ending to Casablanca or having someone rewrite Shakespeare and have Romeo and Juliet not kill themselves. I feel so bad for you, Harry, to have had such an experience that is obviously affecting you in a seriously disturbing manner. I wish we could send you flowers or at least a new copy of the original NOTLD and a machine to show the 16 mm print on. I hope your positive review of the original shown at that festival is calming to you.

Well when I saw the new 30th Anniversary DVD in the store for a second I felt bad that I had already bought the Super Deluxe NOTLD DVD Elite put out. Now I'm thankful I bought it. I guess if you have a choice, go with the elite one. Its got a cleaned up print but its the same film. Plus you get to here the cast sitting around watching the film and talking with each other. By the way Harry, given the subject, I'm curious what you think about the newly scored version of Dracula. I haven't looked to see if you've reviewed that yet.

I first saw Night of the Living Dead when I was six years old. I've watched it many times since and it's like an old, creepy friend. Harry's news angered and saddened me. I did some research and you can read the original source for the information I have to relay by going to www.seattletimes.com and entering Night of the Living Dead into their seach engine. A page of articles will come up; one is by Mark Rahner and dated August 20, 1999; read it if you like. According to Rahner's article, Russo (Night's co-writer) spent $300,000 to shoot 18 new minutes to replace approximately 18 old minutes. Direct quote: "...Romero not only approved of the project, but would have taken part in it if not for an ironic twist: He had already committed to a big -screen adaptation of "Resident Evil," the popular video game inspired by their movie. Then Romero was reportedly fired from "Resident Evil." Many of the controversial changes were things discussed for the original, but left out because of a lack of time and money." End quote. Romero and Russo are old guys and still bitter about getting cheated out of the millions of dollars other people made from their work. It's understandable they'd want to cash in before they croak but this DVD is an unnecessary atrocity. Fans would have paid for the real movie on DVD and been happy with some added trailers and cast interviews. Romero and Russo's 30th anniversary edition supports my belief that evil is untiring in its efforts to manifest itself in new and horrible ways. I also believe that, rather than be forgotten, this travesty will serve for years to come as a perfect example of why you shouldn't try to fix what's not broken, even if you are the original creator.

There are still copies of the NOTLD 25th Anniversary Laser Disc floating around. The Print is from the original, it's cleaned-up alittle, but not to the degree stated above. It's the real thing, and the transfer is approved by Romero himself. It was put out by Elite Entertainment and features two commentary tracks, one by the prod. crew, the other by the actors, the complete script, tons of stills, earlier works, etc. Very interesting, but what the hell happened since then to now? I'll hang on to my copy and pass on the DVD. I met John Russo in Pittsburg taking his low-budget movie course back in, I think, 1992, back when he was pimping his Heartstopper movie. (I got gyped though, Tom Savini never showed.) Russo reminded me of a lowly accountant that hangs onto a bit part he performed in the high school musical. It's no wonder that they're now trying to milk a dead cow for some cash. Preserve the damn film and back off...

Wow. OK, see, I am a producer for a major radio station on the West Coast. I work for a gentleman who does a food show on Saturday mornings in San Francisco. This Saturday, The host reviewed a restauraunt he had been to. Now normally he gives pretty good reviews. This time he panned the restaraunt. I mean fucking PANNED the place. It was sad. I got calls from people who were so enthused by his panning the place they called up to tell him to stop because they were laughing so hard. They wanted him to do it again because he was so elegant in his panning. And then... We have Harry. Harry...maybe it's just me but...I think you dont like the new verNOW DONT GET ME WRONG i don't want to offend you, but...from reading your article one would think you hated it...but mabye that's just me. Either that or you are having a bit much to drink. But WOW. What a pan. You blasted it. Very cool. Also very juvenile, with almost every version of slang terms for defecation known to man being used (did he say crap? Shmutz? Poop? Poo? Dookie? Butt-loaf? Well, he said shit and various manifestations thereof, so good enough, but one would think a Salon.com writer would have at least used poo or dookie...sheesh.) But perfect. The first time I saw this film was on a shitty little VideoCD I picked up as some bass-ackwards movie/bookstore. You can't watch it in anything larger than 1/4 of the screen, and it has about seven chapter breaks. It still creeped the shit out of me. The quality is grainy and dark to the point where I played with my contrast and brightness controls on my monitor a full hour before realizing this was the way it was originally shot. The other day at a large, corporate video/bookstore, I saw the nefarous copies of the 30th Anniversary Edition. I picked one up, looked over the features and thought: "Cool!" As if reading my mind, this guy browsing the racks next to me looked over and said: "Don't man. You'll regret it. It sucks-- big time." Usually, I laugh-off weird pissants that say random things about my personal DVD selections; however, this time, I put the thing down. Phew! One disaster narrowly escaped. But I did get into a completely new mess seeing STIR OF ECHOES (and thus relating to all the items I had to talk about in my subject-heading). Damn! What a boring piece of junk. It wasn't crap, as the directing style was fine, but the story was just so boring. I understand that the thing was written back in the late-fifties/sixties-- pre-SHINING or even SIXTH SENSE-- but a film like this is too derivative to be frightening. The scares are predictable and the acting isn't high-caliber enough to overlook the obvious story-line and paper-thin mystery. And honestly, was I really NOT supposed to be able to read those letters on the movie screen? Go see AMERICAN BEAUTY, yes. Rent STIR OF ECHOES . . . O.K., I'm ready for my flames, now.

K, heres, the deal...I have an M.A. in American religious hidtory. Not to brag but to people who know this shit, Stigmata, despite the crappy reviews others have been giving it, should have been KEPT A BOOK. This is actually a very important Topic about the St. Thomas. gospel. The unfortunate thing is, to do this book justice, you must keep it as a book. You CANT inlcude crap abot a priest/scientist, which exists only in the realm of the nerdy role-player (i.e., d&d, but no offense made) and a vatican conspiracy. If this shit is true, it cannot, under any circumstances, be explaiined in a 2 hour movie. This shit is COMPLICATED and difficult to deal with. There is heavy protestant/catholic theology to be explained, which was not done so adequately. more importantly, you can't use an MTV style of movie-making with this subject . It simply is, really, too difficult to deal with in a film. Now, I know this isn't a place for this film, but it is quite apt, wouldtnt you say? Anyway, the REASON Stigmata is crap, and (HARRY PAY ATTENTION) is because of the theology. In the movie, the "new" message of the "new" Gospel is that Jesus wanted people to to think the church was in all of us; the kingdom of god was in each of us and around us. The catholics (Jonathan Price) were scared of this message so they sought to destroy/supress it. Right? Right? Hello.....um...McFly. Can we say PROTESTANT REVOLTUION? Can we say MARTIN LUTHER? This is what the whole fuckign protestant revolution was ABOUT...the church is not a physical entity that leads us to god but a GUIDE that allows us to reach the kingdom of GOD that is inside us. (IM an atheist by the way). The Catholics and Protestants fough wars about this...ever hear of the Hundred years wars in Europe? It was FOUGHT OVER THE IDEAS IN STIGMATA. And it is SETTLED. The Catholics have their realm, the Protestans theirs (except in stuipid ol' Ireland, crazy Guinness hoagies they). And of course in this stupid ass movie. y girlfriend, who is Chinese, understood NOTHING. If it is an Art House Flick about THEOLOGY, DO BETTER. READ PERRY's history of American religion. READ and FUCKING UNDERSTAND the diifference between Catholics and PROTESTANTS. And why this movie is such BULLSHIT. Jesus H. Christ in a FUCKING Chicken Basket and his Black Brother Harry (No offense, old Southern curse). This movie is bad, NOT because of bad acting, bad screenplay or bad cinetography. Kkrankk, my friend, don't always believe what you read. Romero had NOTHING whatsoever to do with this piece of shit. And he had no say at all in the project. Sadly, he doesn't own the rights to NOtLD. According to him, the issue of who owns the film is a complicated one. All 26 of the film's original investors are still alive, so it's basically owned by all of them. The line coming from the Russo camp, by way of Russ "Johnny" Streiner, is that this 30th Anniversary edition was done to retain the copyright and to protect the film. There's one thing Harry didn't mention, that I haven't seen mentioned in the talk backs. The reason for that ending is that Russo has been trying for years to make his own sequel series. Apparently it has something to do with zombies having children. Look out. I haven't seen this version yet, but I'm afraid to say I must. Think about Batman and Robin, Harry. You had a pretty good idea it was going to piss you off, right? Well, that's the situation I have here. I have always thought of Russo as the hack who tried to take credit for Romero's work but couldn't make an even halfway watchable movie to save his life. But, of course, I love NOTLD, and I have to find out what they did to my baby. It's like identifying the body, you know. But thanks to Harry's incredible anger I now feel confident that I better find some place renting this and not bother with buying it. It sucks that the "original" version also included has the new score. (Did they really use synthesizers? I believe this calls for swearing. Jesus god damn fucking christ.)

Check out this DVD to see how a rerelease should be done. Leave the original film intact, restore the picture with a fine tooth comb, and remix the sound in THX. Plus a shitload of extras make this a must-have. Usually I can't stand Harry's editorials, but he's right on the money here. If you want NOTLD on DVD, buy the Elite version - you'll get a superb transfer of the movie the way it was originally intended. And what's the deal with Harry's mother...?

I too made the mistake of purchasing this piece of crap. (at least I got it at a greatly discounted rate online) Night Of The Living Dead is probably my favorite film of all time, and I was interested to see these new scenes. OY VEY!! If you want a "special edition" to this film, get ELITE's version!! If you want new scenes to this film, pick up the graphic novel by FANTACO and the epilogue and prologue. The art is done in B&W charcoal and is truly cool. The prologue shows that the cemetery zombie's origin involves the farmhouse, and the epilogue shows the fate of the sherrif-led posse. Just to clarify some of the stuff he was talking about, Harry once wrote about a mass mailing he received that was addressed to his mother, from a consortium of cigarette companies (about why the government's lawsuits directed at them were bad for business, poor tobacco farmers, etc.) The letter came posthumously, and pissed him off because his mother had died from falling asleep in bed with a lit cigarette.

Harry, thank you very much for your review. It is good to see someone openly, honestly fighting evil in this world. I have refrained from watching this film, I had already seen too many of Russo's filmic abortions - MIDNIGHT 1&2, HEARTSTOPPER etc. I realized from the get go that if GOD HIMSELF came down and pointed the finger of wisdom at John, that this thing would still make SLEEPAWAY camp and RETURN OF THER LIVING DEAD 2 and 3 look like cinematic masterpieces. Russo's petty, thieving, revolting lack of integrity and talent knows no bounds. I was unfortunately one of the attendees at the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 25TH ANNIVERSARY ZOMBIE JAMBOREE. The idea of this convention had me jazzed to no ends. I'd get to hang with my fellow zombie fans, get a bunch of cast and crew autographs, and get to meet the master himself GEORGE A. ROMERO. Russo was the organizer along with a talentless slime ball name Bob Michelluci - two guys who deserve to rot in hell in perpetual circle jerk for all eternity. John came up with the promo-item the "GOLD PASS". For an extra $25-50 bucks (I can't remember right now) a limited number of people (like 1-200) would be treated to several EXTRA bonus items like a behind the scenes location tour of the MONROEVILLE MALL where they shot DAWN OF THE DEAD actually able to go back into places that the public isn't normally allowed etc. A boat ride around Pittsburgh with Romero and the cast and crew. A special late screening of a pristine print of NOTLD on the big screen in a local theater with cast and crew. ETC. ETC. ETC. Sounds GROOVY no?! Don't you believe it for a second. When we got there I was surprised and disturbed that Russo was trumpeting that also attending the festival would be ADAM WEST! Yeah, BATMAN. What the fuck for, I still have no idea. Other innappropriate guests were DAVID PROWSE and GUNNAR HANSEN. Two guys I loved meeting, but what the fuck were they doing at the NOTLD celebration?! He also had THE BATMOBILE on display? Okay, whatever...I moved on, still giddy at all of the other prospects of the fest. Well, long story short - the "GOLD PASS" sold out of the limited promised "exclusive" 100-200 FAR QUICKER THAN ANYBODY EXPECTED. Hell, who cares if we sold a bunch of these things for like $75.00 promising those people that it was an exclusive pass - these things are selling! So they went ahead and just kept on selling them! FAR MORE, HUNDREDS MORE THAN THEY HAD PROMISED! So many in fact that it was impossible to take the tour of the back corridors of the mall, or hell, TOUR THE MALL AT ALL! This was replaced with several hundred people sitting in the Mall's FOODCOURT (an area that didn't even exist when they shot DAWN OF THE DEAD) and listening to Tom Savini tell the same stories he's told a million times and answer the same questions etc. Then the screening of the film... I understand your zeal with which you attacked this film Harry. You have to make people understand it is FAR beyond their WORST expectations. This pristine print of NOTLD that RUSSO dug out of the dumpster was absolutely THE WORST PRINT OF ANY FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN ANYWHERE!!! HUGE AREAS OF THE SCREEN WERE OBLITERATED, GONE WITH SCRATCHES! Not marred, BUT GONE!!! BLANK!!! The film NEVER got to a watchable level! There were HUGE JUMPS IN ACTION where we'd lose whole SECTIONS of scenes, not just moments. The sound was FULL OF POPS AND CRINKLES. We were promised a pristine print theatrical presentation, we got what looked like the 16mm print that had been shown at every summer camp and college campus SINCE 1968 AFTER RUSSO had dragged it behind his car from a rope. Romero was actually present at the screening, but left just minutes into it, I'm certain embarassed BEYOND WORDS by the constant whoring and thievery of his old friends. The whole festival was a fiasco, and Russo and Michelluci made a bundle ripping off every loyal fan who paid to get in and join in on the "fun". To make the whole thing worse, I had a friend who printed posters. He specialized in officially licensed, beautiful anniversary/commemorative one sheet poster for STAR WARS etc. etc. Partially on my recommendation, I convinced him to license and create an official NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 25th ANN. poster. He made two styles. They were beautiful. Silver and Gold Mylars that weree so nice Christine Forrest came to his table at the end of the con and bought some for her family and friends. The pieces were and are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS paying far more respect and homage to the film than ANYTHING else at the con. The attendance was low and he took a bath on the sales - maybe breaking even at best. That's the breaks, can't blame anybody for the fans not showing up. You pays your money, you takes your chances. HOWEVER, to add insult to injury, Michelluci asked to buy some off of him for a seriously discounted wholesale price. My buddy slashed the price and gave him a huge amount of them for just above cost and agreed to let him pay net 30 days. It was a bill for at least $1000.00 - actually more but my bud doesn't like talking about that whole mess. RUSSO and MICHELUCCI ripped him off. Never sent the money, stopped returning phone calls. What they did do was have much of the cast and crew sign the posters and have advertised them for sale through MARKETPLACE for $300.00 a piece! If they had just sold 4 of the lot of posters, they would have been in the black and able to pay my buddy back. Did my pal pursue it? No. The whole thing stunk of such deceptive, repellantly dirty pool, he just washed his hands of the whole damn thing and vowed to never do business with them again - like many have and even many more will in the future. The guys are crooks. They are thieves. They are vandalls. They deserve every word in these talk backs and every word of venom and bile Harry can muster. You are my new hero Harry - GIVE THEM HELL! Now...ever since I saw "Dawn of the Dead" in Seattle's late, lamented UA 70 theatre (preceeded by the trailer for something called "Alien") it's remained my favorite horror film of all time. Sure, there's Whale, Bava, Hammer's litany, etc...but, like Stephen King's fiction back in the seventies, the film brought horror to MY NEIGHBORHOOD. I frequented a mall...living in the suburbs, I seldom made it to the local farmhouse, so...the mall it was. Flesh eating zombies to my mind at the time, well hey, yeah...IT COULD HAPPEN! The film is, in my humble estimation, the "Empire Strikes Back..." the "Road Warrior..." the "Godfather-Part II" of horror films. So that means I tend to think of "NIGHT" as the MAD MAX, the GODFATHER and yes, maybe even the true "STAR WARS" of horror films. "Night of the Living Dead" was one of the very first prerecorded videotapes I ever owned...one of the first things I bought when I acquired my first VCR in 1980...from MEDA (later MEDIA) home entertainment, once the greatest video company EVER (the first release of HALLOWEEN, anyone?). So...for my very first talkback post...I haven't felt the need or urge to post until now, I have to say...I'm with Harry on this one. EVERY PASSIONATE WORD HE SAID...Russo is nothing less then runoff from a syphlidic whore's douchebag because of what he's done. Unfortunately, I believe "NIGHT" is in the public domain through a strange loophole...which is why Russo could do what he's done...DON'T BLAME GEORGE! THANK GOD I was able to cancel my online order for this title on DVD (The Matrix and Excalibur with Boorman commentary, anyone?) Now...everyone should pre-order the FANTASTIC special edition DVD and Laserdisc of the upcoming release FREE ENTERPRISE, which has a character wearing a DAWN OF THE DEAD t-shirt.

NO seriously, IT SUCKS THAT BAD. I pre ordered the DVD on Amazon before any reviews were posted. As a direct result I posted this review on Amazon's site in hopes that it would prevent others from wasting money on this peice of shit:A viewer , September 10, 1999 Don't even bother. Really. Although his name appears in the credits, George Romero was in no way involved with this project. The new footage doesn't match the original. Despite a mountain of makeup, Bill Hinzman looks much older than his first incarnation of the cemetary zombie. What was he thinking? New cuts and fades, intended to improve the pacing of the film, seem premature and at times omit valuable dialogue. The prologue and epilogue add little importance overall,the main addition being a religious subplot which frames the entire story. Licina's newly recored soundtrack reminds me of bad MIDI files imbedded in somebody's web page. That being said, Night of the Living Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition suffers most from the lack of one person....George A. Romero.

First off, thanks to everyone who emailed directly and via posts to assure me and other readers that Romero had nothing to do with the 30th anniversary edition. I would like that to be true but the Seattle Times reports that although this was Russo's baby, Romero helped conceive it. Note my first post titled "ADDITIONAL INFORMATION." I wasn't there when this scheme was hatched or when contracts were signed; I have to rely on legitimate media for my information. I (and other readers, I'm sure) would appreciate a link to any news article that quotes Romero distancing himself from the 30th anniversary edition. Something along the lines of "I didn't want to do it. They forced me to. It was for the copyright protection. It kills me to see what Russo's done. I'm giving my profits to charity." Until I see something like that I'll have to assume that, at best, Romero was outvoted and is keeping his mouth shut as he goes along for the ride.

I only wish I'd read Harry's review before I bought this DVD. I agree with everything he said. But what astonishes me is when you read the mini interviews with some of the cast members, they go on and on about how "seamless" the new footage blends in with the original footage. WRONG! Supposedly they used the same camera and b&w film stock, but the new footage is so painfully, obviously different. Even with this "pristine" print, the new footage is sharper and the blacks are deeper. It sticks out. There's an added zombie gore scene where a family has driven into a tree, and the wife and children return as zombies then join some other zombies in eating the corpse of the father. This scene appears early in the film, and totally destroys the whole surprise of what the zombies want from humans. We don't know that the zombies are flesheaters until they have the munch-fest in the burnt pickup truck. But if you've never seen the film, the new scene tips the film's hand by letting you know they're cannibals early on. As well as zombies, because in the original version, you see odd people staggering about, but they just look weird. You don't know that they're the returned dead. The new footage shows mangled people with body parts missing walking around, leaving no clue as to what these people are. The new footage and its placement ruin at least two surprises for those who're watching for the first time. The music was DREADFUL, with no sense of dramatic build or drama, in general. Just pecked out on a synthesizer. Truly a dreadful experience. I believe Russo added the Minister character and the ending so he could divert the film's continuity away from the two sequels toward the direction of his two LIVING DEAD novels, "Return of the Living Dead" and "Children of the Living Dead." In the final scene of NOTLD: 30AE, the Minister rails about how the dead must be "spiked." In the opening chapter of Russo's book "Return of the Living Dead," a bus crash has occurred, killed everyone on board, and by the time the cops and the ambulances have arrived, someone has driven iron railroad spikes through the skulls of all the victims. We later find out that a Minister/Priest (the same one?) is the one behind this movement. Truly, truly reprehensible.

Wow, What a scathing review. I was actually pumped about this movie since I loved the original and actually met "Vlad" at a Comicon here in Chicago. He dresses in the Goth style and tried to be a writer for Chaos comics. ANyhoo, he was at a booth promoting this dreck and I got to talk to him about it and the comic adaptations he was inovolved in adn about the music score. He was very enthusiastic about his accomplishments and well... boy, will he be surprised about this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to defend him or Russo for their assinine actions aon what is a great, classic horror movie. Then SCHMUCKO PRODUCER couldn't fork over Walken's down payment, because he just bought a brand new MUSTANG(And some whores to go with it.) so he wanted to replace with with his friend, BURT "FUCKING" WARD and replace Madsen with dopey, Michael Pare'! Madsen would beat his ass in a New York minute! I have a RIGHT to piss and moan over all this shit because my start date was going to be OCT. 18th in Austin, Texas! But, now I gotta start all over again and get new backers! Gee, to make a great film with great actors or a shitty film with shitty actors? Where's the integrity?! Ain't no such animal in Hollywood! I was always skeptical about this. I mean, okay, maybe the idea of putting in an original music score was all right, sorta made sense, but... The "origins" of the Cemetery zombie? The cool thing about him was that we didn't even know he was one of the zombies until he got up close to Barbara and attacked her! He was just a tall stranger, slowly coming toward the two... The other cuts are not encouraging. The exposition in this movie was handled just fine; we didn't need it eliminated. The radio broadcasts were close to perfect- convincing, and provided the right amount of exposition. The "additional footage" sounds downright freaky. It's unnatural, it shouldn't be there. And what's this about the reverend being saved? I'm sorry, unless he cut off the infected area, he's joining the undead, "faith" or not. That said, I may rent it as a lark. Yes, I have very low expectations. I hope Romero publically disavows this remix- but it may have curiosity value, sort of a WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY version of the film. Then again, I can't help but be reminded of the "Love Conquers All" cut of BRAZIL....

I haven't seen Night of the Living Dead since I was little, and I barely remember it - but what's important here is that I've never seen Harry hate anything so much. I almost have to watch both versions now in order to see this, I'm completely intrigued. don't worry though Harry, I promise to hate it every bit as much as you do (I'm waaaay harder to please than you are normally!)

George Romero graciously allowed this atrocity to happen by not actively speaking out against it, but that was the extent of his participation. He has also been kind enough not to run down his former associates subsequently so that they could make some money off of it. I bought the DVD figuring that it at least had the re-scored version of the original and how bad could that be. Boy did I ever find out. It was painful to sit through. Harry was right on the mark except when he brought his personal tragedies into the discussion and when he criticized the pristine print quality. The Elite THX DVD is very clean and it does not hurt the impact of the film one bit. It is still widely available and continues to be the definitive edition of the movie (well - the Elite laserdisc has a few more supplements, actually). My further rantings on this atrocity are available via alt.video.dvd and alt.horror usenet postings from the last two weeks.

If you folks out there really want to see the "What's up Tigerlilly" verison of night of the living dead, check out the version that was released a few years back, if you can find it. I can't remember the exact title of the movie, but it was something along the lines of "Day of the dawn of the night of the revenge of the return of the bride of the son of the Mutant Hellbound Flesh Eating Zombies, Pt. 2" I swear I'm not making this up I have a copy. The original "Night" wasn't copywrited so some guys from Jersey redid it with their own dialogue. Some moments, absolutely hilarious, with great running gags about a duck and Tommy the Talking Shotgun, but the interruptions to the film (like Dave eats a donut) are damn annoying. I think you can order this from Film Threat, if you're interested.

I was kinda of a late bloomer. Im 22 now and I was exposed to Night Of The Living dead for the first time about a year ago. I will state right now I have not seen the DVD version and ive been a regular surfer to Harry's site for almost 18 months.Since seeing The 68 Version Of Night ive massed a sizeable Romero Libary including Memobrilia. Though Night is not my favorite in the trilogy Dawn is im dismayed to hear that they have butchered the film. I understand on a DVD and the reason to buy a DVD is to get a cripser picture but to take away the style of the film. Id love to see a 4th film, id love to see Romero get the recognition he deserves and having his masterpiece besides Dawn Of The Dead butchered like described is not right. I will likely purchase the DVD for my collection because I am a completist and I will sit down and watch it because im a Zombie-fantatic im not sure if there are terms for fans like me. Ill continue to collect Tom Savani,Dario Argento and theItalian King Lucio and his eye gouging scenes and a grudge match between a shark and a Zombie with a naked chick swimming away and I will await new work by Romero and hopefully he will never sell-out to Hollywood to hollywood he is truely a icon and its a sad day when his work is butchered. Harry you are right to be so brutal towards this DVD because we both feel the same towards the movie. Back in 97, shortly after the Hollywood Reporter leaked the story of an anniversary update, I ran into John Russo in Pasadena. I asked him (politely) what he was hoping to do in terms of new footage. He mentioned things that 'they always had wanted to do but couldn't.' He mentioned the Beekman's diner sequence that Ben described. He mentioned news reports of other areas to indicate the broader scope of the zombie uprising, and he mentioned showing the zombie with all four limbs amputated. Funny that NONE of these things made it into the finished film. At that point, he said Romero was upset that the story had been leaked, as it was interfering with deals he was working on. I happily thought the project was dead. When I heard that Russop et al had started on their own, minus Romero, I knew we were in for the worst. It was bad enough that Romero was at the point where he had to do a rip off of his own work (and thank God the idiots cut him loose from Resident Evil - they deserve a hack director - and I'd be happy to give them John Russo's number...), but at least that kept him from being involved with a project that never should have happened. And at least one astute commentor noted correctly that this 'new' film, which I prefer to call JOHN RUSSO'S NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, is a setup for John Russo's CHILDREN OF THE DEAD. Which there should be plenty more room to cast his stable of scream queens in. The fact that the people involved in this desecration of a classic honestly believe they've created something of value is what's most disturbing of all. It's interesting to see peoples comments on Russo, about how he runs shop. Back to my Low Budget Movie Seminar he gave in Pittsburg, it was nothing more than "Buy Our Shit" promotions (not as bright as I am now, I bought a crap-load of his books and videos, of course his signature isn't worth shit). It was promised that Tom Savini would speak, he didn't even show. It was promised that we would all get a video tape of the seminar, we did not. The only thing cool about it was I got to meet Terry Black, the screenwriter for "Dead Heat" (remember that one? with Joe Pescipo and Treat Williams about the zombie cop). Anyway, it's shock that Russo hasn't changed a bit. Gold passes indeed. Don't bother returning the receipts, just hurl the damn DVD through Market Square Prod. windows. It's above the oyster bar on market square in Pittsburg. Somebody should reduce him to a midnight manager at a Jack in the Box for this. All his movies are not even worthy to be called B-movies. He envisions himself as a Roger Corman-type film maker, but I'd watch a Carrot Top movie first. I'll be happy to scan in the picture of him for public digital distorting (do to his face what he did to NOTLD).

I am stunned. I love NTLD, in fact I love the original so much it took me years to sit down and watch Savini's remake. After reading some of these talk back posts telling Harry to calm down and all that bullsh#$%@, I think there is something we're all missing. You may think Harry's hyperbolizing (look it up) with his review, but if you are even the slightest bit of a fan of the original, then just stay away from this new version. Looking over this 30th Anniversary, it brings to mind why is Russo clinging to this movie like a child clings to his parents legs on the first day of kindergarten? It's because NTLD is Russo's only movie and short of adding "you want fries with that?" to his repertoire, this is the only way he can make money. Yes I know he's done other crap, but the fact he keeps returning to this film is like A-ha releasing just one more remix of take on me. We'd all love to see Romero return and do Twilight of the Dead but why should he? If this is the kind of crap that awaits him? PlissKen, they DID alter "Halloween" when they first aired it on TV in the early 80s. I think 20 extra minutes were added (newly shot!!), but don't think they took anything away. I have removed the casing and used it as a double cd holder for a transfer of a lp to cd I have done. I'm not sure if the 15 minutes of footage is actually reinstated in the film itself or simply included as extras but even if it is back in the film - it'll be a valid director's cut, not a desecration by ignorant butchers. This is all footage that was originally shot for the film by Raimi (much of which has been seen in the longer version of Army of Darkness that plays on the Sci-Fi network from time to time). So before you have a knee jerk reaction to further "director's cuts" from Elite and Anchor Bay, realize that an abomination like NOTLD is thankfully not the norm.

The new acting was stiff and unconvincing, the new herds of zombies added nothing, and WHAT THE FUCK WAS UP WITH CUTTING OUT FOOTAGE?! I might've been able to live with this if they had simply added footage. But excising character development is a definite NO NO. If you want a definitive version of Night of the living dead look no further than Elite's 25th anniversary release of the film. They didn't change the fucking soundtrack, hell its in mono for christs sakes. And the fact that romero participated in the commentary shows that he was behind that project. The same commentary is on the 30th edition, but don't be fooled. Its just lifted. Anyway to close, the new version SUCKS!!!

Today I watched the other Zombie movies, and they are fantastic. God, I miss horror movies like this. Horror movies that define the term "horror", that are reminescent of those old E.C. comics where the dead would come back and exact revenge on those that betrayed them. (Romero payed straight homage to this in Creep show.) Dawm of the Dead was so well done. It was grueling and gory and gritty. The scene where the SWAT team goes into the projects just set you up for what was going to come. Day of the Dead was utlra-gory and nasty, but was bogged down with a lot of talk. But still, the whole thing was overall enjoying, and was very creepy how much the population had diminished. I don't want to sound like a horror movie geezer, but they don't make 'em like this anymore. Jennifer Love Hewitt running around screaming at an almost laughable menace (a decripid old man in a fisherman's slicker) ain't horror. Let's hope George's Bruiser brings back the chills.

I went out to Chicago from Detroit to see Romero present his newest film, Bruiser, along with a few of his other movies. At the Q&A session following Monkey Shines I asked him his reaction to this absolutely horrid, godless, vomitous, blasphemous piece of trash. He looked a bit uncomfortable as he said this, "Well... Jack (referring to John Russo) and I are still friends... I promised him that the only thing I would ever say about it is that I didn't like it." He went on to say that he wanted nothing to do with the addition of new scenes. The only thing idea he did like at all was the rescoring of the movie. Just to put to rest the rumors that he was supportive of what I now consider to be the very worst film of all time.

i wouldn't ask you to believe me for a second if i told you that i liked notld 30th for any reasn at all. it was, as you said, a steaming heap of shit. actually, if i remember correctly, i felt like throwing up at the stench when i first picked it up in the store. i knew there was something wrong with it upon purchase and indeed NOTICED VERY APPARANTLY the problem at hand. as for now, it sits in a cabinet with all my other horror movies only there for show. if any of my friends go through it and ask if notld 30th is a good movie, i punch them. they ask why...but they get punched again. i'm NOT joking. notld 30th is the biggest piece of shit i have ever seen (i watched it once) and i feel staggeringly insulted and scarred for life. i have been a fan of horror (mostly zombies) for almost 12 years now and this movie has seemed to hinder my views on the genre as a whole. are there more devious concoctions of rotted bird corpses and human feces in existence? i would like to know for the soul purpose of finding, stealing and ritually burning the living (or dead) shit out of them. thank you for being one of the only people in the world i can identify with on this subject. hopefully i will be in touch with you on something of a good subject in the future. again, thank you.

I would like to give a deep thanks to you for saving me the horrendous pain which clearly eminates from this film. (My statement might have a few big words that the two @$$#@!#'s above jake zombie might not understand) I was seriously considering this film until I heard a few descriptions of it. I was still going to buy it just to see for myself until I saw this sites opinion. At this point if I saw a blind man on the street inadvertantly pick up a copy I would hand him a twenty and chuck the film into heavy traffic. I think anyone that could corrupt something as grand as the original NOtLD is sub-human. And while I'm on the topic of sub human.... The two "people" that I pointed out earlier. Well well well you both seem to have such fasinating lives that you can't help but cast down your all important eyes on this sites owner. Never have a reviewers words been so true. I am a fan of all of Romero's Dead films and many of his others as well. I currently own 6 copies of Dawn of the Dead, two or three of Night, one of Day, and some various memerobilia. I am ashamed to say that I also own this. First off, this is not a Romero film, this is the Russo vision of a Romero film. All that I can say is that Russo must be damned short sighted. I have viewed it once and have since reverted to the good ol' grainy Goodtimes video presentation of the film. I am preparing to buy the Millinium edition DVD of the film in hopes that it is a properly done DVD and not a hack job like this one. The movie NOTLD is great, the movie 30th Anniversary Edition NOTLD is a piece of shit. I will never watch it again.

bWAH hahahahaha 30th Anniversary sucks.. Sucks bad. I pretty much had the same reaction you did. What the hell were these people thinking? I could not believe how disjointed the "story" became with all of the "enhancements" The "Rosie" waitress with her arm obviously tied behind her eaten stump of a shoulder rode my nerves and so did the mismatched film stock and bad lighting. About the only good thing I've garnered from NOTLD 30th Anniversary is the hilarious review you've posted. :O) Thanks..

How dare you insult a masterpiece like NOTLD 30th Anniversary? O.K. so I'm kidding. All I can say is it takes one of two things to piss on a classic like they did. BIG BIG BALLS OF FUCKING STEEL OR UTTER COMPLETE REDUNDANT FUCKING STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not since "Children of the Living Dead" has a film sucked so much. Bear in mind also that Russo has his hand in the pot of that sparkling little turd. How in the blue-pus-fucking hell does John Russo pay his rent? I have watched after-school specials of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen singing to the elderly that were more entertaining than this massacred piece of shit! Watching this, I realized a mere thirty seconds into the film that what they were doing to this classic movie was the equivalent of trying to shave your five o'clock shadow with a fucking garden weasel and afterward using gasoline instead of Skin Bracer. If brains were a job, John Russo would be on welfare!

Though some random idiots are on here making blatant fun of you, and proving that they are significantly less intelligent since they can't even come up with a legitimate reason to do so, I just want to thank you. My fiancee and I are very into Romero movies, and zombie flicks in general. I'll definitely be letting him know not to buy this one. Oh, and to read your review if he has any questions why. Then, after watching the first 15 or so minutes....stopped it...and never watched it again. Then, I taped the ORIGINAL version off of IFC over the turd embedded on the film tape inside of the cassette. Though I wish I did watch the rest...just to see HOW bad it was as a whole.

Dude- your "review" cracked me up! Thanks, won't waste my time. So why am I so late in the game to write you? Well, I'm hoping you'll also skewer this "new", atrocious attempt at stealing Romero's story: the dredge known as "NOTLD 3D". The site teases us with gems such as a "new, WHITE, Ben" and that dude who's seemingly required to be every horror flick now. And "Barb"? Gawd. PLEASE spread the word about this heap like its Venician Space Dust- oh, wait, that's too 1968, huh? Gotta go...I'm feeling ill.
