can anyone tell me if the fight club script is available online anywhere? by the sounds of it, stallone should definitely do this suspect zero movie ahead of the formula one flick he was planning which sounds basically like rocky in fast cars.....and i bet thats how they pitch it....

I wasn't gonna say it, you all know what I mean. Anyway, I'm doubly excited for Fight Club and American Beauty. Until they are released in the decidedly devoid of culture Midwest, I will be bored. Scotty the Fag, out! P.S. Ingenious Moriarty, who would think of looking for evil geniuses in Georgia, you continue to amaze and surprise...
Stallone vs. Hollywood; new movie
by ABking

Moriarty, first off, the things Sly said about Hollywood was from a 2 year old article back in 1997 when he was being offered nothing after COP LAND, so him watching THE OUTPOST has nothing to do with nothing. I was surprised to hear his views about Harvey Weinstein (wonder if he'll ever do a RAMBO 4 now). One question, where did you hear Sly is making a movie called SUSPECT ZERO (I think that's the name you mentioned)? It kinda sounds like Sly's HUNTER project he was attched to. Is it a part of Sly's Universal 60 million dollar deal?
AB King's Inevitable Question
by Moriarty

You're right that the horrible recent reviews of OUTPOST couldn't have influenced the quotes, but the experience of making it sure could have. I knew I couldn't mention Stallone's name without you piping up. Anyway, the quotes that were run in such places as Mr. Showbiz and the Reuters wire were taken from the new Susan Faludi book about the male ideal. It's a new interview, AB, and he talks about feeling abandoned after COP LAND. He also talks about the potential for a ROCKY 6. More than anything, it strikes me as the voice of a guy who's not very happy with things. As far as SUSPECT ZERO is concerned, it has nothing to do with HUNTER. It's a project that I will be covering more in later columns. Until then, hold your questions. I want to make sure that I get the whole story, and I'm doing my legwork.
Moriarty, my mistake...

Moriarty, what do you expect from me. My favorite actor hasn't been on screen in over 2 years. I re-read what you put about the story to SUSPECT ZERO and you are right, it is nothing like HUNTER (what was I thinking). I kinda feel sorry for Sly. He tries to do different things like COP LAND but Hollywood only wants to see him only star in action films. I have a feeling he is being forced to return back to ROCKY and RAMBO. Still, I have faith that THE OUTPOST can (I said can not will) turn out good (it could happen) and that GET CARTER will be a good noir action thriller. Moriarty, have you heard anything at all about GET CARTER? I'm surprised you havn't said anything about this movie since the original is said to be a classic.
A Radical Notion

Just a quick thought: If's Sly's so upset about what's available to him in Hollywood, and he still has some Box Office cache in the foreign markets... why doesn't he just go and make a film in France or something? He could probably find an amazing comedy in about twenty minutes- and anyone who watched Oscar without their blinders on knows he ain't bad at comedy. He'd have to take a big pay but, sure, but if he's more worried about career than money...

This guy has talent but sadly usually phones in his performance. I watched First Blood a couple of weeks ago and remembered that it was actually quite a thoughtful and good film which has been tainted by its sequels much as Rocky has been. Lets hope he does do Suspect Zero with Ben Affleck and lets hope he does it right...and lets hope it has a clean ending without the possibility of Suspect Two,Three,Four etc.
Dr. M, is my killer prediction accurate for Bone Collector?

After watching the trailer several times, I came to the conclusion that...(potential spoiler) 5 4 3 2 1 Michael Rooker is the killer. Here's why: A) In every cliched serial killer movie like Kiss The Girls, the killer is usually a recognizable or well known supporting actor, who is usually a cop, who has nothing to do in the film but sit around and brood. B) In the trailer, they show a glimpse of the killers eyes in the taxis rear view mirror, and they look exactly like Rookers. Am I right or what?
Waldo Salt is MISTER X ?!?!?!

Who is Mister X? Anyone who has read the Zmuda book knows that the "X" character is as fascinating, if not more so, then Kaufman himself. Andy thought so too and would cite him as a primary influence. As to his identity, I've been working on it all weekend: Waldo Salt Criteria: Academy nominated, massively respected, high-profile friends with recognizable voices (the Catch-22 incident),wealthy script doctor. As to the eccentricities, who knows? If anyone has a better guess then post it please.

I believe the killer is Leland Orser, the guy from Seven and Very Bad Things. Though I have not yet seen the movie or read the book, I remember hearing thats who it is. I was thinking it was Rooker too though. Al Bundy would've been the best choice though.

Abrahamclan, I as well am dying to know who mr. X is. Zmuda gave out many clues, but I still couldn't figure it out. I dont know who Walkdo Salt is, but it seems like a good candidate from what you said. This requires further investigation. Oh, and about the killer in Bone Collector, i also think its the guy from Very Bad Things and Seven, his voice is very distinct.

I read this script when it was over at Phoenix Pictures and Ben Affleck was attached to star as O'Ryan. I assume if he's doing a rewrite, he's doing it because he's still attached to star and wants to make the script better. It was a really neat script when I read it but still needed some work. I never would have though of Stallone as O'Ryan, but can see how it would work for him-- if he did it in the vein of character actor instead of action star, it could do more for him than just a regular action role. It could get the buzz that a great performance as a lack luster character (in Copland) failed to generate because of the audience's indifference to an understated role and film. Let's all just hope that Jeff Daniels does indeed get that "other" part.

Angelina Jolie in 'Tomb Raider'? Uhhh, no. Why is this movie being made? As talented as she is, Angelina Jolie is lacking a couple of key assets if she's going to play Lara Croft, and one of them isn't an English accent. What's she going to do? Pull a Mariel Hemmingway? Or maybe she could borrow Pam 'I Married a Wife Beater' Anderson's implants. She doesn't need them anymore...

Spoiler..... I have to disagree with Moriarty about the killer in Bone Collector. Don't get me wrong.. it is very bad and predictable.. but it isn't obvious who it is. Because they try to pull a 'Sea of Love' type ending.. only they never set up the surprise character. One completely unrelated shot near the beginning of the film does not set up the character... nor does the really long explaination the killer gives to explain his motives... nor does.. you know what.. this movie sucks now in memory even more then it did when I reviewed here (http://www.aint-it-cool-news. com/display.cgi?id=3425) But my review does tell you who did it. Oh and it is true that they spend a lot of time in the movie trying to make you think it is Micheal Rooker... it isn't.

I too have read the Andy Kaufman book and the Michael O'Donoghue book in the past few weeks. (Coincedence? I say nay) And I too found them to be inspired looks at comic genius. When I've had the patience or time to finish one of your columns, I've always come away liking your writing style. And now I know why. You obviously have an appreciation for the finer minds in entertainment. I've been loking over the net, trying to find a comic web page that even came close to "National Lampoon". You know what I've found? Nothing! So we're starting one. I know it's a bold statement to say that we'll be close to "Lampoon" in terms of quality. But I think we will. It should be on line in about 3 weeks. I'll let you know how it comes along. To start we have a wonderful piece of offensiveness called "The Private Life of Ken Starr" that should not be missed. I don't want to say to much about it, suffice to say that it might be as offensive, and funnier, than Paul Krassner's piece about LBJ fucking the corpse of Kennedy in the neck wound. Certainly in the same vein (the jugular) Hoped I've piqued your interest, more info later Spen

PlayStation 2 is most likely going to miss its Christmas release date in Japan. That'll hurt. It will come out there in January. Also, some people have complained about DreamCast being buggy. It's not the machine: some titles that were manufactured at one particular plant in the U.S. came out defective. That's why some versions of the games - Ready 2 Rumble is one of them - work, and some don't.

When I saw your comment about the Tomb Raider movie, I had to mention a new TV series that is being heavily advertised on a Toronto station (City-TV). The series is called "Relic Hunter" and stars Tia Carrere (sp?). If you can't place the name she had major roles in True Lies and the Wayne's World films. Based on the ads, it appears to be an obvious rip-off of Lara Croft. They also refer to Tia's character as a "modern-day Indiana Jones". The series hasn't started yet so I can't tell you anymore about it.

I got EW yesterday and in an article about "tough gal movies" it mentions Elizabeth Hurley as a possibility. I'm actually excited for this movie to be made, but Elizabeth Hurley? I don't think so. Though, I must say I hope Lara Croft is cast for more than those two extra thingies that a lot of the mentioned women are supposedly missing or else we'll get another Barb Wire. I would really like to see someone who usually doesn't do action flicks in the role or even an unknown. I don't know why, but I can picture Catherine Zeta-Jones in this role, too.***On a Santana note, Moriarty, nothing beats classics like Evil Ways and Black Magic Woman. I've grown up on this kind of music, thanks to my dad and his record collection from college. Thank you for mentioning how soothing that music is and proving Santana never goes out of style.

I don't how this subject ended up here, but the last word I read (yesterday) about the Playstation2 system was that it is being released with twelve titles in Japan March, 2000; and it will launch in Europe and America in the Fall season 2000, which WOULD make it's release one year away which WOULD indicate that Sega has got some serious sales pushing to do. Sega will probably clean things up great for this Christmas season; Christmas next year will be not be pretty for the Dreamcast. Playstation2's price tag is the only major deturrent, $369-375. But that's for a Playstation2, a Playstation (remember, it'll be backwards compatable), AND a DVD player all in one. Ciao for now. -meatball

The PSX2 is not coming out Christmas 2000 in Japan. It was originally scheduled for Christmas 1999, but has been pushed back to March 2000, and may be pushed back another month or so. American release will likely be late summer/early fall 2000. Not sure about European releases. Further, in addition to DVD capability, it's much faster than the DC (With a dedicated Graphics processor, a la Voodoo), and has already wrangled a huge list of developers. On the other hand, it's going to cost a good bit more than Sega's machine. Just think of PSX2 to DC as the SNES to the Genesis. If you bought some kind of monster computer to play 3d games, buying both should be no problem for you . Now, I'm ashamed to have all this knowledge, and I'm going to have to go shower to get all this nerd off me.

First, to BOSSHOG: I will try not to mention GET CARTER on this board anymore until I see the original, even though I know that won't change my mind. I don't even think I can rent it because it's not on video anymore. To everyone else that has commented on the Stallone issue about his career: I said I felt sorry that Hollywood won't think of him in any other role than the action hero role, I never said I feel sorry for him period. Case in point... come next march, even if THE OUTPOST is not all there (though I think it will be by then), it can still be a BLOCKBUSTER. People love cheap thrills (THE HAUNTING anyone). That movie might have been riped apart to death by the critics but it still grossed close to 100 million. Even Travolta's THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER was considered a bad movie and got terrible reviews yet audiences flocked to it to the tune of 100 million. THE OUTPOST could come out at the right time when people are in the mood for a film like that and it could make a killing (pun intended) at the box-office (even if it's not a great movie). All THE OUTPOST has to be is a BLOCKBUSTER and all this shit about Stallone's career will be forgotten about. I can't feel sorry for that.

Just like the real Spike Lee, you are shooting off at the mouth, my friend. Sony announced the DVD thing about 6 months ago, get on the ball. And, as anyone other than a Sony whore will tell you, the graphics differences between Dreamcast and PS2 will be negligable. As i recall someone saying, "If Playstation 2 comes out in April, I'll grow another dick." Finally, (and most importantly) it's vaporware! (And expensive vaporware at that!)

Must I set the record straight? Yes, PS2 is set for March 2000 in Japan. Yes it will rule. Dreamcast is out. Yes it rules. The PS2 can push more polygons per second. HOWEVER poly's do NOT make the game. In fact, if you look at the movies posted of Tekken Tag Tournament compared to Soul Calibur, THEY'RE DEAD FUCKING EVEN in the looks department. The only thing I can think of that TTT has over SC is the background graphics. The levels are sweet. And who was the idiot that mentioned the "a la Voodoo" thing for PS2? What the fuck do you think the PVRG2 chip is in the Dreamcast? Same thing. And uhh.. it ain't vaporware if companies have dev kits and games already in the making. Go play Crash Bandicoot some more, ya Sony whores.
Oh, and Suspect Zero sounds good. Too bad our wishes never come true.

What would you have done after you'd made a couple of criticly acclaimed films (Rocky, First Blood)? Sit back and wait for that "acadamy award getter" role or grab at something fun, pays big dollars and sets you up for other roles. Sly did what any other person would have done and most actors don't have the luxury to pick and choose roles that challenge them artistically every time - especially early on in career. Where would he be now if he'd only ever done 'Copland's & 'Oscars' - not as well paid I imagine, so please get of your soap boxes those of you who are slamming his recent comments. He's every right to say how he feels as he's lasted longer in Holly-land than many others. On a different note, I read an interview with Peter Jackson in our papers on the weekend (here in New Zealand). I didn't check this site till today to see if anyone transfered his words to this site - don't mind doing that for any Hobbit addicts out there. WOAH - gotta go and place for order for Saving Private Ryan and Iron Giant on DVD (Nov release!).

I'm sure this thread is pissing off all the movie news junkies, but hey, the video game sites don't have talkbacks . I never really looked at the specs for the DC, didn't know they had a dedicated graphics chip . A friend of mine bought a DC, with the idea that I'd get a PSX2 and we'd trade em occasionally. I've seen some screenshots for TTT that look a good bit better than SC's characters... The in game char shots look about equivalent to the cutscenes they're showing in the arcade now. But I've only seen SC on a smallish screen TV, so I shouldn't compare. Has Sega gotten any established RPG developers? If they could gank Square from Sony like Sony ganked em from Nofriendo, I'd have to seal the deal and buy a DC.

why didn't fincher cast stallone as 'big bob' in 'fight club'? why didn't stallone lobby furiously for the role? why am i asking all these rhetorical questions when 'fight club' has already been made, and the point is moot anyway? moriarty, you have a gift of making projects in the pipeline sound soooo coooool - i actually want to see 'suspect zero' with stallone as o'ryan now! (with affleck as the young FBI guy - hmmm...) but only if he's willing to work with a director who won't bow down to sly's will. i get the feeling jim gillespie or stephen kay (down to direct the 'get carter' remake) will probably give in to stallone at every opportunity, and the films will bite as a result. 'get carter' gives sly a cool opportunity to show off some actual acting chops, but only if carter remains an ice-cold prick. as for 'suspect zero', get alex proyas to direct, i say.

So basically, you guys are saying Stallone took the many millions (and I do mean many) instead of the quality scripts and now his career is in ruins. HOWEVER, unlike regular folk who face financial and personal disaster if their career is in ruins, for Sly Stallone it just means that he must spend more time lounging in his Miami mansion and yachts and whatever the fuck else the ultra-rich do. So bottomline is that he 'needs' to resurrect his career so that he can get an ego boost of being a top star again? Is that it? Geez, what the hell are you all feeling so sorry for him for? Hey, I got nothing much against the movies he's done even the recent ones (Demo Man, Dredd, Cliffhanger weren't as bad as their reps here would imply) but why feel sorry for him? The only thing sufferring is his ego. And like the other guy, said, it only takes one big hit for a guy like Sly to make a comeback. If Outpost crosses $70 million Sly won't have to worry about a lack of scripts.

2000 can go two ways for Stallone. 1) Worst case senario: THE OUTPOST flops and Sly will be on hard times until GET CARTER comes out and we see how that performs. 2) Best case senario: THE OUTPOST is a BLOCKBUSTER and he follows that with GET CARTER which also hits it big. If the second senario comes true, then in one year, Sly will be a GOD again.
