Furry anthro FOXES wearing clothes!!! That's porn for furries. As a non-furry all I can say is: Meh. Read the "Fantastic Mr. Fox" book to my little sister once, found it rather dull. Hard to believe anyone could think it'd make a good full-length film. Doubt I'll see it. Might be good for the kiddies, though...

That guy's books defined my childhood. The BFG was amazing, as was George's Marvellous Medicine (which caused me to get grounded for the summer holidays after attempting a marvellous medicine of my own, using my mum's perfume and other noxious chemicals).

And as much as I liked the Witches and Matilda, I don't think the madcap/ justice combination of Roald Dahl has been correctly done 100% yet. The best was James and the Giant Peach, but only the animated part of it, bringing it back to "real life" really messed up the tone...

We have cg now. It can do things faster and prettier. Stopmotion just looks ugly and jerky. I just can't continue watching a stopmotion movie knowing what could be achieved with cg. I would be more enthusiastic about watching Coraline, or this Fox movie if it were made with cg, or even hand drawn 2d animation, rather that stopmotion. It is just THAT ugly.

Sure, the elements are all there: eccentric characters, odd situations, music of The Kinks. But, for some reason, the idea that popped into my head when watching it was that DARJEELING is to Wes Anderson as CHASING AMY is to kevin Smith.

GetEveryone, I had a similar reaction to the second still. In comparison to the first shot, with all its similitude to life (if in real life there were polo wearing foxes in well-read dens turning to address the camera with anything other than a snarl, or to run the hell away - but I'm not dissing foxes, the foxes in "Grizzly Man" were great, they get an A+), the second shot looks a little lifeless. Here's, I think, a key to the difference: look at the eyes of Mr. Fox ("LOOK DEEPLY INTO THEM!" - said in stereotypically unsettling Eastern-European accent), there's like a key light shining right in his eyeball in that second shot. It sort of flattens out any potential depth, somewhat ruining the illusion of this talking fox (in really swell pajamas). BUT! there is an upside, potentially... another big difference in the two shots is the difference in tone and what each is trying to capture. The first shot one is capturing motion, which, considering that this is a doll with tiny clothes and tiny expressions tailored by big clumsy human hands inside a tiny room with three walls or less, it comes off terrifically. I mean, look at all the posts here (and whether they are informed or not is far beside the point) - a good percentage of this board initially thought that these images, especially NUMERO ONE, were CGI. I mean, wow. And so that brings us to our disputed shot. It is contemplative, a pinnacle moment in the film, not light hearted AT ALL. It is the potrait of the starving Fox family cowering in a burrowed hole (with a fellow mamalian friend! We were told that one of the story expansions was the inclusion of the Fox family's fellow tenants of the hill the farmers destroy in order to get at Mr. Fox. These innocent bystanders, these civilian casualities will come to Mr. Fox for advice, for quick-witted escape, and possibly they come to denounce him, for retribution). This screen capture comes at a much more emotional, and harrowing, moment in the film. And if you look at all the other characters, they are all expressing differing, very personal emotions, unique to each character as they face this uncertainty together, and individually - the shit is hitting the fan, "Is Dad going to save us?" And this comes off. Hot-Dammit! does it ever! I mean, really, I can't believe how emotive Anderson and his team have made these wonderful creations. What I think what we are seeing in Mr. Fox is emotion: the terror of realizing your family is in danger and the heartbreaking realization that you have no clue how to get them out of this, the fear of failing. That's what we are seeing. And quite possibly, could that key light be a tear? The most despair this lightning starter has ever seen - and his family is there to see it. If you haven't noticed it by now, Wes Anderson is one the great chroniclers of the family unit. He captures the dynamics in a way few can even claim they attempted (his portrayl of the Whitman brotehrs in "the Darjeeling Limited" is one of his greatest accomplishments in a very unique career, one that helped me see my friends differently, how I've coped with them in lieu of my own male siblings, my lack thereof, how I've always envied those with brothers, their safety net). HOLY SHIT GUYS! We are seeing Anderson's themes already and all we've got is two, albeit beautiful, screen shots! That's an auteur. That's somebody finding a rhythm that only they can explore, in thier own wonderfully idiosyncratic way. "Bottle Rocket, "Rushmore," "The Royal Tennenbaums," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," "The Darjeeling Limited," "The Fantastic Mr. Fox." Wow guys, how lucky we are to get to be here for this. It's the simple pleasures - like watching a guy on a roll do the tightrope act, balance plates and bowling balls, somebody throws a hat up to join the collection growing on the top of his nose, making us feel like part of the act, we hold our breath. Great stuff. One of film's great highwire acts this guy. In Conclusion: one is a great production still, the other one is all that we are missing (and we are already blessed to have what we have of Anderson's films - plus, Owen Wilson's best and most heartfelt performances, as only a friend can bring out in another, a intergral part of one the other's career and style). I could go on like this for at least a day. Really.

He is a voice, and is contributing three or four songs (and I think that they were written specifically for the film).

You ever see the version of "the Wind in the Willows" (also known as "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride") with most of the Monty Python troupe? Terry Jones directed it, too. Stephen Fry and Steve Coogan are in it, too. And it was made by Disney. Wow. But really, it is a strange little oddity, and pretty amazing that it was made, and even more amazing that it is as much fun as it is - I mean, Terry Jones is painted green and has a weird bloated body. A madcap tone (may not please a purist of the original stories) that is truly childish. Monty Python's got a knack with children's stuff though - my first exposure to them was even before I saw "The Wind in the Willows" (somewhere around '96 - I must have been about 15 but dadgummit if remembering it I felt like such a kid, delighted and red rolling with laughter). That exposure came in the form of "Transformers: The Movie." Yeah baby, the animated movie with Orson Welles voicing a planet devourer. Oh yeah. And right there in the middle was Eric Idle as one of the most interesting characters in the movie as an inhabitant of the Siberia-like trashdump planet where the characters are exiled to after the loss of their leader, OPTIMUS PRIME. Yes, this is how we will remember "the Transformers." Never really had money for the toys, but man, I had that movie (one of those free summer movies for kids - and was I ever enthralled. Plus, "SHIT!").

I've never even heard of that version of Mr. Toad's adventures, and it sounds like something I should try to track down.

It was about 60-75% complete; lots of armatures still in shot that hadn't been CGI'd out, a few sequences in storyboard/animatic form only. Flowed very nicely - the big debate among idiot moviegoers seemed to be whether the use of the phrase "Cuss it" was confusing or not. Personally, I think it was perfect as it was.

Really, what was the point of doing stop-motion and making it look like CGI?
