30 Rock is crap. Like the Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, it's a pretentious, boring, unfunny sitcom that critics love but that few people watch. I'm glad that Breaking Bad has gotten some love because it's the best show on TV right now, but WTF? No Shield or The Wire, two of the greatest shows of the last decade (or *EVER*). The Shield had possibly one of the greatest series finales ever commited to film and this is the recognition they get? How can anybody take the Emmys seriously when Big Love and Dexter (I love Dexter but season 3 was crap) get noms and the The Shield and The Wire get none? Fuck you, Emmys!

The best supporting actor in drama IS tight. Emerson, Paul (thank God), Hurt, Slattery..but one more time for the Shat?? I'd easily put Kartheiser (sp) for Mad Man in that spot. He fucking acted the hell out of that role.

No mention of the lack of 24 noms this year? I thought it "came back stronger than ever"...

Granted, last year's Star Wars would make a better case for me. I think Flight is artsy fartsy, Weeds is more drama then comedy, Office and 30 Rock have been played out as is Entrouge. HIMYM there is no question that Family Guy is funnier plus Big Bang should have gotten this spot. Of course, NPH is hosting and the show plus himself have been nominated. He deserves the nod and win. Sheldon is a good choice for best actor, but won't win. Baldwin for his 800th award. I will say Sons of Anarchy and Shield got screwed over. Plus, does 30 Rock really deserve all those nominations? Tina should win for playing Palin thus saving human society.

question again here:

Can someone please explain to me the difference between "Outstanding Comedy Series" and "Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series"? Makes even less sense since 30 Rock was nominated in the former, and SNL in the latter, yet in "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" you have both Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) and Kristin Wiig (Saturday Night Live).

Do they usually have 6 - 7 nominations for the big categories?

"Four of the five comedy series writing nominations went to episodes of “30 Rock.” "
To me that's just laziness on the part of the nominating committee (or whoever decides this). Shows should be limited to 2 nominations per category. Pick the best of the best and force yourself to take a good look at what else is out there.
I guess, with 80% of the writing nominations in their respective categories, Mad Men & 30 Rock are both a lock for Best Drama, and Best Comedy, respectively.

Did Katherine Heigle recuse herself again this year because "the writers didn't give her anything good to do"? Or are they simply over her?

Family Guy gets nominated for Best Comedy Series but nothing under the "Animated Series"? Why make separate distinctions if you are just going to blur the lines?

and only Emmy nomination for writing.

Like I said above, 4 nominations for one show for writing is laziness on the part of those nominating shows. Sure, Mad Men is a great show with great writing, but so was The Shield. Very different shows so it is not easy to compare. It seems, instead of making the effort to compare the best writing of Mad Men with the best of The Shield, those nominating decided Mad Men was better and gave them all the nominations (save for the token "other show" to create some suspense as to "which show will win" on awards night).

They got 99 nominations today. I can't remember the last time a broadcast network led the pack. IMO, HBO is the worst thing that ever happened to the Emmys. They were held to a lower standard than the other broadcast networks, shows that were limited series in length, less than 10 episodes wound up being nominated in comedy and drama series. A lot of actors and series over the last decade got cockblocked in the rush to shower HBO with praise. The only good thing to come out of this is that True Blood joins BSG on the sidelines and for once, a prior Oscar win doesn't rubber-stamp an Emmy nom (*coughAnnaPaquincough*)

Seriously - it gets overlooked when it's a really good show. Now 2 very depressed seasons later when you can go through 2-3 episodes without laughing once and it gets nominated? That's pathetic. Really don't get the HBO hatred on these boards though - it's kind of sad actually. Just because the other networks have finally caught up to making as good of shows as HBO means doesn't mean HBO sucks now - they've been staying steady even after all their major hits have ended. And seeing how this is a AICN board - I'm going to laugh my ass off once when A Game Of Thrones airs and see you all kiss its ass and say how everything else sucks in comparison. Just saying.

That show has been amazing from the very beginning to the absolute end and people will be watching it and talking about it long after the rest of this dreck is so much syndication fodder on USA and TNT. The Shield may be the best show to ever grace the medium and if not it is certainly in the top 5. Also, Eastbound and Down is one of the funniest shows on TV period. I'm also floored that Deadliest Catch isn't on the nom list for reality considering it is one of the few reality shows that is, you know, actually REAL.

You guys gotta be fucking kidding me. HBO overrated? The Wire, The Sopranos (even though the ending sucked), Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Rome, and yes even Big Love (which IS vastly underrated and the best thing on HBO right now) have all been AMAZING series, and all rightfully deserved praise. Sure, right now HBO isn't what it once was, but let's not go shit all over everything that ever came out of it.

As for nominees who don't deserve it: Family Guy, Entourage, Weeds, How I Met Your Mother, and House.

And I've never found The Shield to be amazing, it's nothing compared to the above mentioned HBO series. Now you can all go back to sucking Michael Chiklis' dick.

As a huge fan of the show from the beginning, I have to say the last season was horse shit, and the series finale was tepid at best. "Ooo, we'll have Starbuck just... disappear!"

Also disappointed Lost didn't have a better showing, though nice to see it's actually nominated.

I still enjoy 30Rock, but there's a little something missing from this season that was there during the first season. Not that I'm complaining, it's still one of the best comedies on TV. Somewhat surprised by The Office snubs, but also not really that surprised, since that's been a little all over the place too, though it would have been nice to see Edris Alba or Amy Ryan nods.

Aaron Paul's nomination makes up some for the other omissions. I find it hard that the best five best drama scripts of the year were four Mad Men Episodes, and the Lost finale. Yay for Mythbusters and No Reservations.

That show deserves nomination for Hank Venture alone. (I am the Bat!). Also I'm a little suprised to see Better Off Ted being snubbed. It's no 30 Rock for sure but world above Weeds (which is probably the most disingenous show on TV right now in the sense that the entire plot is created for the sake of a cliffhanger at the end of each show, with each character being a plot device. 4 writing nominations for 30 Rock and Mad Men is just fucking stupid. I love Mad Men to an insane degree, but there were episodes of Damages, Breaking Bad, and tons of other things that deserved attention. Aaron Paul getting nominated is great. Silverman nominated is great. Jemaine and FROBISHER getting nominated is great, but unfortunately I feel the "popular" choices will beat out the "fan favorites". I suppose maybe I'm frustrated as I just got notes back from a pilot I pitched to FOX, but it's just depressing to see what is being honored and not honored in Hollywood.

Mad Men is a fine show, but perhaps not to everyone's taste. S1 leaned too heavily on the atmosphere, but S2 was an improvement.

You're right though, "Kill Screen" and the pitch-perfect "Family Meeting" should have been in there somewhere, along with Goggins and Pounder. Chiklis got his, Pounder has a good rep, but it's criminal that Goggins was never recognized.

I've watched every single episode and I just don't get it I guess. It's just a soap opera; husbands cheating on wives, a secret pregnancy, people stabbing each other in the back. Is this great drama? Where are the powerful scenes comparable to Vic Mackey confessing his sins or Shane Vendrell calling for a "Family Meeting"...? Or Ronnie getting dragged away to prison as Vic can only stand there and watch, consumed with guilt? Oh but Don Draper had a scene where he acted stiff and unemotional towards his wife, so we've got to nominate that instead. Anyway, good to see Breaking Bad and Damages getting in, at least some quality work is getting recognized.

Well, Battlestar gets snubbed again because the Emmy voters are a bunch dickless old farts who are no more in touch with reality than a doped up mental patient. Oh well, remember how the Beatles never won any grammys?

Looking over these nominees I can't really get pissed or anything because I don't watch too much TV. What I do notice is that in a way the Emmys need a best ensemble award more than the Oscars do. You can't possibly nominate all the people who should be nominated. I only watch 3 shows and I'd run out of room if I could nominate people. Luckily all three shows are nommed this year, LOST, DEXTER, & WEEDS. Hope lots of the actors attend. Actually I think that's been the problem with LOST getting acting noms. The actors are usually filming in Hawaii and therefore can't make it to the ceremony so they don't get nommed the next year. I'm gonna go ahead and suggest to ABC that they make an effort to get as many losties as possible to the show as presenters or guests this year. Even if they have to take a weekend off from shooting. It could pay off in nominations for it's final season. And it could have one of those ROTK type 'we'll award them when it's over' momentum thingies.

I don't know why, but I really want Aaron Paul to win.

I'm kinda surprised at Dexter's nominations. It's still one of my favorite shows, but last season was just ok.

Aaron Paul's performance in the last half of season two of "Breaking Bad' was absolutely amazing. The man deserves the Emmy without a doubt. Bryan Cranston as well. And "Breaking Bad" for best drama. Amazing, amazing, amazing television.

Mad Men and 30 Rock both deserve their accolades, but FNL needs some kudos too... it's one of the best character dramas on TV.

was on Big Love too, and it took me several episodes to realize it was him. Yeah Aaron Paul for best supporting actor then. Don't fucking give it to Shatner again! And William Hurt was so low-key in Damages, he was barely there. Timothy Olyphant made more of an impression, but Emmy just loves it when old pro movie stars grace the tv with their presence. BTW I forgot about Jon Voight on 24, thought he would have been up for a prize.

Though Gabriel Byrne is a very very close second.

Lead Actress in a Drama has to be Glenn Close.

Supporting actor in a drama series, William Hurt. I know Smits is down for Guest actor, but for me he should be for supporting actor.

With Hope Davis for Supporting actress.

That's right I said it. The Emmys prove that. Although I am a conservative, I still believe in the old adage of funny is funny and good writing is good writing. Don't care what you say, 30 Rock is the funniest show on TV. It's called a sit com for a reaon. Situation Comedy. On the flip side, I've never watched Mad Men, but have heard it is an extremely good show which leads into...What happened to the Cable Ace Awards? When it comes to drama, network TV can't compete with Cable. It's too difficult because on HBO they can show more and say more. I mean when is the last time anyone was really excited about a drama on Network TV...The West Wing? Face it, they need to split their award shows because they really can't compete against each other.
So, let me get this straight...

The show is too steeped in cartoon history, and history in general (esp this past season) for your average Emmy voter to appreciate. The creation of Doctor Girlfriend alone grants it genius status. Just like Always Sunny, be glad its on the air and continues in its be its warped self.

There's only maybe one or two real laughs per episode. But, out of that list of comedies it's not hard to see why it'll win, although Entourage is much funnier. this season of Family Guy was pathetic other than the hilarious Three Kings episode. Out of the Closet with a Vengeance Stewie is the new jumped the shark.

to get emmy nods. They go crazy for that crap: "ooh, she made herself ugly, how brave, how much sacrifice for her art!"

Stuffin all her hair under a bad, bulgy bald cap, then occasionally wearing an ugly wig over that, well, not much brave sacrifice for art there....

THE SHIELD. Glad to see the love here, and nothing I can add about those amazing performances that OceanWang, Ash0k, and others have said already! Good thoughts folks...

In other news, Cheery Jones gets a nom for '24', yet not Kiefer or Carlos?! Wow, she wasn't that good was she?

Random thought: I think there should be a special Emmy given to Alan Dale, called the "he's in everything awesome" award. He's not just some acting whore, his characters always give a show a huge boost in quality. He's been a credit to everything from '24', "O.C.", "NCIS", "Lost" and "Entourage"! It's like every time I change the channel that Kiwi is there!

...but in the final season there seemed to be a "last chance for emmy" mindset with some of their scenes. The repetitive Adama drunken droolin weepin pukin scenes really did not add anything, and were actually pretty damn distracting and out of place.

Sure, they could have been a part of the general disintegration and disrepair storyline--but they were over done and really not necessary. And the flashback to a young Adama doing the same damn thing negated the old-age-wearing-out-disintegra tion-Adama=Galactica thing, anyway.

Of course they alluded to Jacob in the rest of the show. That's fine. I guess I just feel like they could have revealed him better. The conflict between Jacob and the guy in Locke's body just seemed completely out of the blue, without any real context. I'm sure they'll go over it in the next season, it just didn't have any emotional resonance for me.

The other thing is that Locke is dead. He's fucking dead. He never gets his redemption, he never gets to be the bad-ass we always wanted him to be. He no longer is part of the show. It was so awesome to watch him become the leader he was always meant to be, to see him take the reins.

I still think there is something more to Locke's coffin

I agree. 30 ROCK is great (albeit somehow vastly overrated), but the Emmys have never so much as looked at It's Always Sunny, which has more audible laughs per minute than any other show. That doesn't make it the best, but certainly one of the funniest. But 30 Rock? Seriously? It's not even in my Top 5 comedies on TV (this top 5 would not be restricted to live action)

It was all about the characters, right? To hell with the plot, and continuity. We need cliffhangers and twists, even if they don't make any sense whatsoever. It's only about the characters. We don't really care, after all, if they find earth, or even survive. Lets just make it up as we go, cause after all, its only about the characters and real fans will understand that.

Also, agree about Locke. Except I believe that they are going to bring back to life the real Locke. That is the reason for them dragging around the casket. There's just no way that this is how they end one of the show's greatest characters. Also, Jacob visited Locke in the past so I don't believe we've seen the end of our old friend.

I know about 8 people personally, including myself, who watched that show religiously. None found it confusing, none found the characters annoying, none found plotholes that bugged them... everyone enjoyed it. The only complaint was the loose end of what Kara was... but after some discussion amongst friends where we bounced ideas off each other, we came to the conclusion that it was actually more fun that way. That's life... mysterious things happen, and sometimes discovering your own reactions and guesses to that mystery is far more interesting than having it spelled out for you.
