It's unreleasable as is, not due to gore but to the general idea of (semi spoiler) a nutcase killing kids that come to his door on Halloween with poisoned candy. I wonder if they FINALLY made some cuts to it, which would not only make the film better but allow it to be released. Dougherty could check his ego at the door, cut maybe 5 minutes of the film and get a wide release. He hasn't had much going on in the past two years since he shot this (three years ago now?) so maybe he should get over himself.

Jul 15th, 2009

--modern Hollywood marketeers can't figure how to market an original film. Nobody will go see something they haven't already heard of (* see "Drag Me to Hell"). They knew they had to release it around Halloween and they were afraid of the "Saw" franchise which has owned that slot for the last five years. Also, the film is an anthology, a type of storytelling that is completely out of vogue at this time. They just didn't want to risk spending money to market it when they had no idea how to do so in the first place and felt it was a losing game to even try.

and "G.I. Joe", and "Asteriods", and "Monopoly". Because these are things you've HEARD OF and have some attachment to. Now, it would stand to reason that most of you have heard of HALLOWEEN and many of you even enjoy the dark holiday, and might even spend 8 bucks to see a film set during that time, but it's too big a risk for the money men who right now think the only horror films people will pay to see are based on other films they've already seen.

Happily, there are plenty more surprises in the film. Any news on what's going to be on the DVD? The animated short Season's Greetings would be an obvious inclusion, I'd imagine, given that it's sort of the seed that this film grew from.

Burton killed that little kid in Sleepy Hollow. Not onscreen, but that's one of the closest I've ever seen kids being killed. The other that I can recall is one of The Puppetmaster movies where a kid fucks around with Torch or whatever the fuck the name of the puppet with the flamethrower was called. Initially Torch wasn't gonna kill him, but the kid whipped him or some shit like that, next thing you know Torch looks at the camera really pissed with flames starting to rise and then you get the idea.

. . . the Kintner boy death in Jaws still kind of gives me a chill. In Tentacles, the worst of all Jaws ripoffs, a baby gets dragged under, bassonet and all. Anybody seen Deadly Eyes? If not you have to. Giant, killer rats played by dachsunds in costumes. The movie is basically shit, but there's a gruesome, off camera baby death w/ a nasty trail of blood from high chair to basement. Freaked me OUT as a kid. Best kid death EVER is the kid in sleeping bag getting swatted into a tree by inside-out bear in Prophecy. I'm sure I can think of some others. . . oh yeah, Pet Semetary.

The whole concept of poisoning or otherwise contaminating candy at Halloween time has been a persistent urban myth for decades, even though the actual instances of such a crime occurring have been incredibly rare. Hell, there is a scene in Halloween II where a kid has a razorblade in his mouth from what we infer was tainted candy. I seriously doubt the studio backed away from a theatrical release over that single plot element.

It's not an on scene death but I thought it should be an honorable mention SPOILER the cop guy comes home and finds Jenifer in the basement eating the body of the little asian girl (little as in single-digit age). Sure it (the asian girl's body) was mostly guts and only the torso and head were left, but I thought that was pretty gruesome to show a body like that so young even if it was prolly just a dummy.

Studios don't shelve a movie that cost $20 mil. and has several name actors in it over the "inability to market it." They shelve movies because they're either a) horrendous, or b) have some element that presents possible lawsuits against them. The film isn't THAT bad to warrant not being released, so I'm going with option B. It's a different corporate landscape now with horror movies than the days of Halloween II. And remember the film, "The Program," where on opening night multiple groups of teenagers were injured (and some killed, I believe) re-enacting a stunt from the film. It doesn't mean it will happen, just that it could so the studio covers their ass.
