I actually think the first Ninja Turtles movie is pretty good. For what it is worth, Kevin Smith thinks it is one of the best comic adaptations. The second is pretty bad what with the Ninja Rap and all. The third is such a pile of shit. Late critic Joel Siegel actually had the gaul to compare it to Kurosawa. Kurosawa!

The TMNT movie was pretty ok, with some disparity between the quality of animation for different characters, yet I thought it showed promise (and it hinted at Shredder's return). The live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies of the early 90's were accepted by the youth of the time because CGI hadn't become the norm. Now, if kids see grown men dressed up as turtles, well there will be laughter. Probably some baseball bats as well.

I liked the first movie, walked out of the second and endured the third for my nieces sake. The CG TMNT was probably the best of them all. Was it an excellent movie? God no, but it seemed to be a better way to make a feature length Turtles movie. So why go back to live action? Why make another in the first place? The last one didn't set the boxoffice on fire.

The whole late 80's "surfer dude" asthetic from the original animated series has been poisoning the concept as kiddie krap ever since. Not that I need a Dark Knight-style TMNT movie, but those original comics had a pretty impressive mixture of seriousness with humor that rose naturally from the characters and situations, instead of "PIZZA DUDE!" bullshit. Yeah, I liked the cartoon series as a kid, and enjoyed the first movie, but by the second film, I had already essentially outgrown the "kiddie" version of the Turtles. A PG-13 Turtles flick would match the original comics' level of violence while still allowing kids to see it.

This event might be a bit of fun, but ultimately you are not going to be cast as a somebody in the movie you are going to be cast as a nobody... worse than a nobody - 'a minion'. I don't think I could live with being a minion in a Turtles movie. Telling the grandkids - "That's me, look quick, see that guy in the black hood being kicked by the twat in the turtle suit. There." The first TMNT movie was nearly panel for panel the origin story/shredder story. Yeah the tone was lightened a little, but far less than the cartoon was. You have to remember, the cartoon was at its peak when that movie came out... that they were able to tell the original story at all was a miracle. To your point though, it would be nicer to see a more serious story line, with consequences , blood etc... I used to be solidly in your camp on this, but now I'm looking back and saying... well, TMNT isn't exactly shakespeare.... maybe going the darker route will damage the story.

The Turtles 'world building' has been a carefully crafted work of art, with a depth and subtlety that makes the Turtles, Shredder, and even the minor subsidary characters, live and breathe. By bringing in storylines from the video game and cartoon you risk disturbing the space/time continuum of the Turtles universe. Why would you risk that man? Why?? WHYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!
