but I think she didn't want to screen test for the Rachel role, and was hesitant since she was doing Star Wars at the time. I do remember reading a handful of young actresses wouldn't screen test, and that's ultimately how Holmes was able to land the role (because she did). I think another was Keri Russell (she'd have been perfect, IMO). Anyway, Thor ... how is this going to work without the alter ego? And I wonder what they cut from the Matthew Vaughn era $300M estimated script to get this ready to film?

I don't have a horse in this race because I'm not a fan of Thor anyway, but NP drags down any movie she is in. I don't want to drag Star Wars into this discussion but her acting was terrible there. That same style is spread out through every one of her movies. Well.. except for where the heart is, where she had the same wooden acting with a bad accent.

She sucked in V for Vendetta
by ZombieHeathLedger
Jul 13th, 2009
01:32:54 PM
Particularly the scene after V has duped her into believing that she has been held in a prison camp and beats her down to the point where she accepts death over submission and she is supposedly totally free now. In the comic it is an extremely moving scene whereupon she even gets naked to symobolize that she has stripped away all of her inhibiitions and fears and she holds herself naked before the raging storm. Not only did Portman refuse to do the scene naked (they could have shot around the nudity) but she just did not sell the cathartic epiphany of this all-important moment of the story. This was THE transformation moment where Evey went from being a victim to an eventual replacement for V himself. And Portman just lacked the depth of her acting ability to go deliver. I loved her in Andy Samberg's SNL digital short, tho.

by codymr
Jul 13th, 2009
01:37:23 PM
As much as I think Portman is a very capable actress, I think she runs into problems with content she doesn't understand or has no interest in. While Lucas can easily be blamed for most of the problems with the SW prequels, it did not help matters that Portman didn't understand the material. She was miscast from the start.

An interesting personal anecdote: At the time Lucas and the gang were shooting ROTS, I was in Australia working in TV news and coaching skiing on weekends. One day while charged with teaching a bunch of people to ski... It turns out they had been, or were in the middle of filming ROTS. While these guys were generally tight lipped about the subject on the chair lift, they did mentioned that Portman was difficult, not because she was a diva, but because it seemed to them that she just didn't have any interest in or grasp of the material. You can see it on screen relative to McGregor, who is a self professed SW old school SW nerd. Unlike Portman, somehow he never looked completely lost with the witches brew Lucas concocted.

I am not sure Thor is the best vehicle for her... Fantasy/SF doesn't seem to work towards Portman's strengths.

Don't believe, well tell me if this sounds similar:

A meek man, 30-something, goes out into the wild and discovers his true origin.

He is the son of a wise and powerful god (or God) who lives up in a land in the sky.

This "All-Father" sent down his son to earth in the form of a man, and know that he knows his true destiny he has decided to act as its guardian and savior.

His arch-enemy is an evil trickster who can take different shapes and is famous for being a liar. One of his other major foes is a giant flaming demon who is king of a land of fire and brimstone.

The reason I hated Branagh's Frankenstein was that it was extremely boring, DeNiro was wasted as the monster, it was supposed to be true to the original novel and it wasn't and lastly, Kenneth Branagh himself. Did he have to cast himself as Dr. Frankenstein? But, more importantly did we need to see Dr. Frankenstein sans shirt so that Branagh could how off his recently toned body. That man's got some ego. Dr. Frankenstein is a scientist for chissakes, not a Chippendale! Man, that guy's got one huge ego. Don't be surprised if he casts himself as Odin.

1)I know practically nothing about Thor and nothing about Green Lantern. Thor seems more interesting 2)Natalie Portman adds a bit of quality. First of all I’m European, bear that in mind. Green Lantern seems like another generic superhero. I think the whole idea of a ring that gives superpowers is kinda lame. Nothing against him but the god of thunder just seems tougher.

The non-geek movie goer doesn't give a shit about Thor. And when explained that it is a viking that flies by swinging his hammer really fast, it dawns on them the absurdity of the premise. The only way for them to sell this is by Portman showing a lot of skin in the movie. And I don't think she'll be willing to give that kind of a commitment for a comic book movie.

I think both of these characters are bottom-tier superheroes, needing to be fleshed out with the trappings from other genres - in GL's case sci-fi and in Thor's case sword and sorcery fantasy. They seem equally weak, in that sense, to me.

I guess I give the edge to GL on the basis of possible visual excitement. He can create any object with the energy from his ring (yes, I know that sounds silly) - if done right, that, at least, might look cool. And, if they launch him into space, they can create visually striking environments for him. Thor? Well, he's got mountains and snow on his side, I guess.

Plus, Thor is just imposing Scandanavian mythology on the Marvel template. Hulk with a breastplate, basically.

GL isn't a wholly original concept as it borrows heavily from Arthurian legend and such, but at least the creators had to come up with original character names.

Moviewise, you might not like Ryan Reynolds, but you know who he is. Chris Hemsworth? Destined to ride his Abercrombie & Fitchness all the way to 1995.

by Continentalop
Jul 13th, 2009
04:11:12 PM
I personally think this is a dumb idea for a movie, but mostly because no studio has got the vision to make this movie right. But to say Thor has no visually striking environments is just wrong. Besides "mountains and snow" he has an imposing city of gold called Asgard that floats on in the aether amongst the stars and is reached only by the rainbow bridge Bifröst. That is something a little more fantastic than just mere sword and sorcery.

He can also travel the other nine worlds, such as the shadowy realms of Niflheim (land of the dead), the fiery world of Muspellsheim and the flame demons, Svartheim - home of the Dark Elves - or just traverse on Yggdrasil, the gigantic world tree. Hell, Thor can also go to Olympus or travel into space to meet the Living Planet, Ego.

Kirby's Thor is far from just Hulk with a breastplate.

I imagine the studios will take the completely safe route, or even worse go in the direction of all things tame and make it like the Ultimate Thor.

If I am willing to pay money to see a Norse God of Thunder with a magic hammer that lets him fly, than I am willing to see a Living Plane, a world tree, a giant serpent that circles the earth, Thor turned into a frog, and a bunch of evolved animals who ride robotic flying steeds and act as knights.

If you are going to make a movie about a character as psychedelic as Thor, then go all fucking out.

Ultron going nuts and attacking everyone, including Galactus (who then sucks him dry).

Molecule Man dropping a mountain range on the heroes.

Hulk holding up the mountain so it doesn't crush everyone.

Spider-Man trashing the X-Men and then later Titania.

Wolverine chopping of the Absorbing Man's arm, and when the X-Men come to the heroes rescue (especially the berserk Colossus).

Hawkeye shooting Pile Driver from the Wrecking Crew in the arm with a normal arrow, telling him at this range his bow is more powerful than a .357 (which Pile Driver is resistant against). Cap refusing to back down to Doom after he gets the power of the Beyonder.

Shit, there are a ton of them.

That is when I realized I loved the Wrecking Crew, especially Pile Driver.

In fact, that started the entire trend of Pile Driver getting picked on and treated like shit. In Secret Wars he also had his costume changed to a supers-strong metal by the Molecule Man after he called his girl a cow and had to have the other members of the Wrecking rip it off our else he would have died.

And in the Masters of Evil IV story line he goads Mr. Hyde into a fight and gets decked by him. Of course, I love how he sits there thinking to himself that he would love to see Absorbing Man or Goliath take Mr. Hyde down a peg or two.

Secret Wars I was self-contained, you only had to buy the Secret War issues. Secret War II, however, was a horrible monstrosity that had every issue tied into the story.

infants that don't know Marvel history. Jane Foster was the nurse that worked with Donald Blake (who was THOR's secret identity as a mortal on Earth). That said, I was told that this THOR film would not have the Donald Blake character, but this casting announcement does seem to put a bit of a question on that. So we may still see the Donald Blake - which would be weird because Blake didn't last too long as a major part of THOR's life, who kinda went Asgard bound and AVENGERS adventures rather than the good Dr storyline.

My original point was that Thor the comic book character didn't predate Christianity. The mythology of Jesus obviously influenced the Thor stories, just like they influenced Superman (especially the first movie).

So maybe that is why you are thinking I was saying Jesus is older than Thor. No, I was saying Jesus is older than comic book Thor.

You raise a valid point, and, based on your example, I can see why you would be concerned. The concept of the centuries old pagan god in the otherwise high tech Marvel Universe(TM)has always been a bit sketchy. What works in comic books may not always work on film. Crystal Skull was "comic booky" in the worst sense. All I can offer is when the Avengers movie rolls around, maybe they will do an "X-Files" type of thing where the supernatural aspect is just left ambiguous.

... then so can a "Thor" movie. Portman's casting looks pretty smart, because it may attract a number of leading men who'd be interested in working with her. Also... Portman was excellent in "Closer."

This film project may hinge upon the strength of the script and potential uniqueness of the visual approach Brannaugh uses. The lightning around Mjolnir, the way the hammer spins in Thor's hand, the flow of his cape and the look of Asgard--- all of these can help to make or break this project. They just can't cast the guy who played Thor in that last "Hulk" TV movie. :-)

Let be honest..who wants a classic beauty? The wining and dining..the false modesty..the pandering compliments just to get in some self aware "beauties" panties. Portman would want you to sit and read poetry in return for a one position, sweat less shag.

Now Lohan...Fox...there is some Sex appeal. No need to do anything but buy them a drink, compliment them on the some bullshit thing and tell them how fucking "kewl" that "random asian symbol" tattooed on the back of their neck is. Best of all..these kinds of skanks will do anything you can dream up...Fuck that, they already have and MORE. Lohan or Fox either one are girls who not only will give three inputs as long as the tequila and Xtasy hold out...but later on will drag over their little sister or cousin so you can piss on them, after donkey punching them, in the shower while they tape it for youtube!

Oh yes...give me the hottest girl with the lowest self esteem anytime...good times...good time.

The thunderstorm in The Incredible Hulk was Thor's doing. 4. In The Avengers, the Hulk will be possessed by Loki, temporarily fighting Cap, Thor, IM, but then will unite with them in the last act. 5. Doctor Strange will be announced as the 2nd Marvel film in 2012.

One, it's cool that she takes roles like these. She'll do a respectable drama, but she'll do something like "V for Vendetta" and "Star Wars", too (and before the prequels were made, no one could guarantee they'd be crap).

Two, I think she is a good actress. I've seen better, but I've seen worse. And she is drop dead gorgeous. I'd take her over Megan Fox any day of the week, any season of the year.

KIrby and Zelazny's Lords of Light...
by PessimusGrime
Jul 13th, 2009
09:37:24 PM
...The King actually worked on preliminary designs for some insane film project of Zelazny's book in which the sets would later be turned into a theme park (I know... WTF? But it actually happened). Of course the project fell through and Kirby's designes went unused. Later when the Iranian hostage crisis was going on, a CIA agent disguised himself as a European producer and met with the Iranian rulers to secure location shooting locales in Iran, using Kirby's sketches from the defunct Lords of Light project as pre-production art examples. Apparently the mullahs were wowed and actually agreed to let this agent bring in a film crew. Of course the crew was more disguised agents charged with freeing a group of hostages who had escaped from the captured US Embassy and were hiding in various locales around Tehran. These escaped hostages were then also disguised as film crew members and smuggled back out of Iran when the supposed location shooting was finished. Plan went off without a hitch. True story! (And one that would make a GREAT movie if anyone in H/Wood would get their nose out of the blow for 5 minutes and greenlight something watchable!)

Natalie Portman as Jane Foster: "Like Valhalla!" Seriously though I hate closer. Interested in how this'll pan out, what with Branaugh seemingly doing more high brow work and that Thor can easily be interpreted in a corny way. I'm sure he's going to make the best movie he can possibly make, what with the success of The Dark Knight and his own sensibilities as a director. Then again look at Ang Lee's Hulk. I seriously hope this is a good film.

DennisMM, was right. It should be "Mine." By using "Thy", you had Portman asking Thor how it's hanging, then Thor answering about Portman's "Hammer".

I don't know where you read that "Thy" means "of or relating to thee or thyself". It only means that when addresing another person. As in "thy words art fucked up". Thy/Thine actually means "Your".

"Thou" means "You".

What I mean is..
by The Dark Shite

When you've read thy means "Of or relating to thee or thyself" it doesn't mean "mine".

It's "Of or relating to thee or thyself", as in referring to another person's possesion or trait. "Your car", "Your temper" etc.

You basically had Portman saying "How's your Hammer?" & Thor replying about the condition of Portman's "Hammer".

It plainly states right in there that Thor is forced to live among humans, which makes it pretty possible for Jane Foster to be his love interest. That said, I would prefer the all-Asgard approach myself, since for some reason I always thought a "secret identity"/alter ego never really suited Thor.

I also would have preferred if they saved Loki threatening to destory Earth for the Avengers film (a la "Ultimates 2"), but I guess either the writer or whoever gave him his notes thought the audience would care more if Earth was in danger than Asgard. Which I don't believe, but hey, Hollywood has always had a pretty staggering capacity for selling its audience short.

Yeah, Ribbons, I was kinda hoping for an all-Asgard approach too, BUT, what made Thor apart of the Marvel Universe to begin with was him going to Earth, using the Donald Blake alter ego. Without that element, the "real world" / Midgard element, it may as well be a story based on the classic mythological Thor rather than the Marvel Comics version, you know what I mean? Also: how could he meet up with the Avengers (eventually) if the whole thing was set in Asgard? I do agree with you, though, that the "secret identity" was always sort of on the lame side.

I seriously love everything I have heard about this project so far. Please just stay true to the Jack Kirby vision of Asgard. He had an eye for epic fantasy that would be awesome to see captured on film.

she asked me my name and I said, "I'm THOR!" and she said, "You're thor? I'm tho thor I can hardly pith." Also I've seen NP nude in a film, it was side view and no nipples, but nice. Rubbed out a quick one and went on with my life, and I don't have to waste time mistakenly bitching about no NP nude scenes in the TBs.

Had a lot of great things in them. Were they perfect? No. The biggest problem was they were both somewhat separated from the mainstream DC universe so they didn't really interact with any of the other heroes (and before everyone starts pointing out how Superman met Darksied right away and they were in the DC universe, there connection to it was very minor -it wasn't until Legion of Super-Heroes that Darksied finally appeared in another DC comic).

If anything, DC blew Kirby's creations. They just let them sit on the shelf instead of mining them like the could of (or with Darksied, waiting until the 80s before using him as a major foe).

Just to settle the "mine" "thy" matter

From wiktionary: Historically, my originally came to be used only before a consonant sound, and later came to be used regardless of the following sound. Nonetheless, mine still sees archaic pre-vocalic use: Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: / ["Battle Hymn of the Republic"]

The word thou (pronounced /ðaʊ/ in most dialects) is a second person singular pronoun in English. It is now largely archaic, having been replaced in almost all contexts by you. It is still used in parts of Northern England and the far north of Scotland. Thou is the nominative form; the oblique/objective form is thee (functioning as both accusative and dative), and the possessive is thy or thine. Almost all verbs following thou have the endings -st or -est; e.g., "thou goest".

She used to be a phenomenal child actor. Now he's a boring and bland adult actor. Her name in a movie does nothing for me anymore.

What really makes me interested in this movie is not the cas,t but that Kenenth Brannagh was chosen as director. That's intriguing beyond measure! I'll watch the movie for Brannagh as director alone.

I'm with you re:Branagh. I think he could really kill with a good budget. He can direct actors well, so I'm not worried about the (nigh) unknown leads (Thor & Loki). I hope Marvel is pushing for an epic LOTR feel for this, because (IMO) that's what this needs to succeed.

C'mon, Kenny fuckin' Branagh, make it happen!

I was of two minds whether or not to post this and I'll probably regret doing it but the news is so insanely cool and I'm unfortunately unable to keep quiet about it. It's a pretty major spoiler for Iron Man 2 so if you don't want to know then stop reading now. If you're still reading then I would ask that you think very carefully before you continue because I cannot stress how major a development this is. I've been hearing that there's a strong possibility that this news will be announced at comic-con but on the other hand it might not be, in which case it's an even bigger deal than I think it is. As I said I wasn't sure about doing this, and have even set up a different user name just in case things get crazy. So anyway read on if you don't mind potentially huge spoilers I guess. Here it is: Edward Norton is in Iron Man 2. It's not a cameo either. Beyond that The Hulk is involved in two key sequences. So there you go.

I'm certain that Brannagh can pull an epic with the budget he's given. This is the same guy who with the catering budget of most hollywood movies made a epic historical war movie for his film adaptation of Henry V. Dealing with actors and using well the budget were never my concerns regarding Brannagh. This guy could turn a homevideo into an epic. Brannagh is fucking professional! Of cours,e because, like, he worked in the close proximity with the complete awesomeness of Our Lord Bale in Henry V. Osmosis, man! And Brannagh is a great director and actor on his own right too, of course.

You don't need to be a shakespeare enthusiast to have your ass kicked by Brannagh's Henry V movie. The movie works very well as a historical drama and as a ass kicking medieval war movie. Truly, what are you waiting for? Ge tthis, the movie has Brannagh himself as the lead, with support from Christian Bale, Brian Blessed (yeah, him!), Ian Holm, Paul Scofield, Emma Thompson (her first movie role), Judi Dench, Robbie Coltrane, Derek Jacobi... really what are you waiting for? Brannagh's Henry V will kick your ass!

First, wiki is never a good source. Although, your link still shows DennisMM to be right. It actually confrims what he said. You just don't understand it.

Thy/Thine = your. Thou = You. Mine = My. Incidentally, I come from a town in the north of England which still uses the word thou, although we say it more like a "Thu" or a "Th" sound, so I know what I'm talking about.

Thor may speak of himself in the 3rd person, correct?
by JDanielP
Jul 15th, 2009
06:42:30 AM
If I'm... (cough) ...NOT mistaken, Thor would just as likely speak in the 3rd person, using "THY" rather than "MINE" --correct? (I'm asking.) --As much as I've read comic books in the past, I don't believe I have EVER read a single issue of a THOR comic book, though I've enjoyed the character well enough in THE AVENGERS and THE ULTIMATES 1 & 2 collected albums. --And I'm curious enough about the movie that I will see it... if it looks promising.

I'm actually not too embarrassed to be wrong on the Thor-speak. However, I am MORE curious of what is the proper usage... "in regards to the character" ...over what history tells us. (Comment, anyone?)

on saying Portman's really good when she gives a shit. I think that attitude sucks but she's definitely done good work and yet she's done such crap that it's amazing to think she's capable.

I saw Hayden Christianson in "My Life as a House" (or whatever it was called) and he was pretty good..seemed like he could actually do more than mumble lines, make a few faces, and not look at the camera..after seeing 'Jumper' I have to wonder if he actually can do more than make a face, repeat some lines and not look directly at the camera.

Portman, however did a totally kick ass turn as 'Matilda' in 'Leon' (do yourself a favor and see 'Leon' and not 'The Professional') and I really liked her in Closer (only person I did like in that fliq) but I think whomever said she's good when she gives a shit is exactly right.

If the theory is correct and she was that ambivalent about SW even with the years it took filming the trilogy, then this bodes very bad for Thor.

Of course, not being a Thor cb fan, I'm not overly concerned but what's with the unknown casting for Thor and Loki? I know you guys liked Routh as Supes but I think outside of looking like Reeves, he wasn't actually that great of an actor...basically just stood there in the suit and had that mousy voice...(Superman Returns is the worst cast comic book movie of all time).

Will be interesting to see...
