Apatow's refusal to employ only yes men in his editing room kills any goodwill I have to see any of his future flicks...and I like Wilco's new single--when Tom Petty released it as Jamming Me 22 years ago.

Live sets are better than discs, I definitely agree with that. My wife and I have seen them 5 times in the past couple years, and plan to see them the next time they are withing driving distance. That first trailer for the film, in which they reveal that he thinks he's dying then it turns out he's not and yadda yadda yadda looked terrible cheesy and was shamelessly imitating James L Brooks.

Too bad Sandler's in it, cuz that means...
by DirkBelig
Jul 8th, 2009
09:24:54 PM
...I won't see it. I haven't seen an Adam Sandler film since The Wedding Singer...wait, let's do this AICN style...since THE WEDDING SINGER and I liked that one. The problem is that the Big Daddy trailer had that bit of him bellowing about giving the kid some candy and that broke the back; I never saw another Adam Sandler flick hence.

He has two modes: bellowing jock asshole moron and baby-voiced retard which he uses for his "serious" work. When Little, whoops, LITTLE NICKY tanked, I hoped Hollywood would snap out of their bad habit of giving him money and putting him in films, but nooooooooooooooo!!! He's like Nicolas Cage without the talent or hope of accidentally making a good movie occasionally.

I dig Apatow (though he really needs to learn how to edit out superfluous stuff) and like the whole rest of the cast, but until they find a way to replace Sandler with a less annoying person - like Jar Jar Binks or Ryan Seacrest - it looks like I'll be missing this one. You can't have a movie called FUNNY PEOPLE with Adam Sandler in it. FUNNY PEOPLE (PLUS ADAM SANDLER) would be the more truthful title.

Whoops! I mean BIG DADDY.

by FrancoNeroLuv
Jul 8th, 2009
11:11:39 PM
Look I'm not saying he is a comedy genius or anything but I don't understand the hate toward his movies and the people he puts in his movies. Do you not get the humor? If you do, do you just not like it? Or is it the hate the hype syndrome? Personally I think a lot of his movies are very refreshing in this day and age of comedies based on one dimensional premises(Cough Ben Stiller cough)as they provide plots and humor that are based on the characters and stem from the characters (Superbad/Forgetting S.M./Pineapple do that the best methinks) as opposed to characters who are based on the plot and are only what the plot need them to be (Tropic Thunder/Zohan/What Happens in Vegas comes to mind). I like that a lot of humor comes from everyday conversations ("My uncle had a ho-runner") and not sight-gags/ridiculous situations (Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder). So I just ask one person from the anti-appatow camp to list WHY they dislike his movies. I do not want to judge or argue or convince you to like them, I just want to how the other shoe fits, out of curiosity.

Now THAT was a great comedy. Great characters you cared about, great performances, great comedic situations. True classic. Comparatively speaking, Appatow and his movies aren't even trying. Appatow movies are like a half step above PORKY'S only not as funny, more like PORKY'S 2: PORKY'S REVENGE.

"Appatow movies are like a half step above PORKY'S only not as funny, more like PORKY'S 2: PORKY'S REVENGE." can you elaborate on why you think this? again just curiosity. I don't see where you get the gap between not living up to a true classic and being just above a crappy teen comedy series? It's kinda like saying "because she's not as hot as Jessica Alba, I would be barely more willing to screw her than I would Barbera Bush" I'm not mocking or insulting I just don't see how not living up to one of the funniest American movies ever, means the creators are not trying. But good call on P,T and A. great character based movie.

I do agree that her character was very unlikeable, but to me that is what it would have been like in real life. It seems like what they were trying to portray in the flick was that this uber hot chick on the cusp of her career really taking off in the hollywood insider industry was derailed because one night she got a little too fucked up from celebrating and slept with a guy she wouldn't have given the time of day to if she was sober. Now imagine if this scenario had played out in real life. Either A) she would have immediately aborted or b)she probably would have attempted to keep the baby and either raise it herself or only see the guy minimaly out of sheer embarassment and overrating her own self worth. That is the one aspect of the movie to me that seemed unrealistic is that she actually stayed with Ben, because in real life, especially in a place like Hollywood, CA stuck up bitches like that never do the right thing. Hell I know chicks that are purely wannabees that still act like that.

by Series7

The reason Freaks and Geeks and 40 year Old Virgin worked so good was that Apatow and Family actually lived through most of that stuff. It felt real and was funny. Knocked Up never happened to anyone, thats why the funniest parts of that movie was the stuff between Rudd and The Wife because thats what they lived. Non of them are washed up stand up's so I don't see this working. Write what you lived, its what works best. Same with Superbad, that was probably based off of shit Seth and his lover went through in high school.

Still waiting for a hater to explain
by FrancoNeroLuv
Jul 9th, 2009
02:30:57 PM
So yeah the closest thing I got so far is 2 comparisons to Porky's and 1 to american pie but no explaination as to what they thinks makes appatow like porky's. No examples, nothing. I can only conclude that it is merely I don't get it so I think it's stupid which is frankly a simple minded and intolerant way of looking at things. C'mon someone please muster up the intelligence to explain their hate. As to "All he did was take what they did in the original American Pie movie and turn it into a formula" that is a simple view of it. AP drew it's humor from finding different ways to put character into gross/embarrassing situations, and while some appatow movies have a couple moments like that the real humor comes from the characters and their interaction with each other (The simple fact that James Franco had a cowboy and Indian toy set on his bed in Pineapple, Comparing Heigl throwing up to Jabba the Hut Dying, etc.), the situational humor is usually the weakest part of an appatow movie. The closest to verbal humor the pie movies get are MILF which is less funny and more of just a new word for kids to say and shit-break, again not all that funny especially since it is only meant to lead into a diarrhea pay off joke at the end. I didn't want to argue these points, I was hoping just to hear WHY people disliked appatow, but since I get at best narrow minded half-answers I can only assume is that your simple brains associate any movie with buddies and foul language as the same genre as Porky's and american pie (or you base opinions soley on trailers). chumps
