Just speaking on the topic of more upcoming summer films. I have to admit I did like Public Enemies but it dragged more than it needed to, it was trying to establish their love story when it was already established long before. I do love how my town is in the movie like 4 times, I live right where they come out during the first robbery, and then later where they come out of another bank and Depp gets shot, that was also right by my house. But back to the topic, District 9 looks insanely promising, the premise is fucking relentless.

Many of you must be pretty young, because I remember many summers that there wasn't any films like Wolverine (which would have kicked major ass in 1990) or Terminator (imagine if it came out in 1980, it would've cooked our collective noodles).

So as far as I'm concerned, District 9, for better or worse, is better than On Golden Pond 2009, IMHO.

I'm hoping that D9 will be solid enough for Blomkamp to be nailed down for Halo. Oh, the hours I've spent as MC...

I believe 100% that Superman belongs in Nolan's next Batman flick,...despite how Superman dips a bit deeper into the realm of fantasy. "DISTRICT 9" proves my point, just by the trailers. (--I tried to make my point in a recent PUBLIC ENEMIES talkback, feeling Mann's influence on THE DARK KNIGHT, as others have already explored.)

Obviously, the escalation continues. And considering the universe of DC Comics and what's been established with THE DARK KNIGHT, perhaps Nolan's best answer for Ledger's Joker...is Bale's Batman, now considered a public threat, while casting Superman as the hero.

The approach that I would personally take, considering Nolan's continuity and my knowledge of the DC Comics universe, I would establish NEW Mayor Rupert Thorne,...as he requests the help of this so-called Superman of Metropolis, to bring in Gotham City's masked vigilante for a number of federal and state crimes.

Basically, I would cast Batman as villain, Superman as hero, and Rupert Thorne as the crooked Mayor who utilizes Superman in Lex Luthor style, with innocent lives at stake. It would be about the revelation of truth and a new friendship formed. And what bigger friendship is there, in all of fiction? And likewise, what bigger opposing forces are there, when Batman and Superman are at odds?

Lastly, I would cast Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, while considering a more familiar Superman costume design and ignoring unnecessary continuity with SUPERMAN RETURNS. I'm completely confident that Nolan can get what he needs from actor Brandon Routh.

That is what I would do.

Yes, Supes should be brought in for Nolan's 3rd Batman but it should take place many, years later and basically be Miller's DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, that way you can bring back The Joker with an older actor (Javier Bardem gets my vote if he can lose the accent). And Supes should NOT be played by Homo Routh again he should be played by an older actor as well, Jon Hamm from MAD MEN would be perfect. Ideally you would replace Bale with another older actor but since that's prob not an option bring in Dick Smith to age him. Hey at least, as an older man character, Bale would have more of an excuse to overuse the gravelly intense whispering he does in every single role recently (haven't seen PUBLIC ENEMIES yet so can't comment on that). Triumph Trifecta. Seal the deal as the best Superhero trilogy of all time.

Teaser looked cool but I wasn't quite feeling it. This new trailer shows me more exciting shit like crazy mecha robots and some action. I believe the whole thing will still be a sort of documentary style. Looks awesome! If they can do Halo like this then I'm down! Though Halo probably needs a more cliche hollywoodish feel if matching the games is what you want. But even a change like this is a-okay with me!

because it begs the question: "how did this aliens evolve in the first place?" The best answer for a movie is that reproductive rights are highly structured, and although an alien can self-fertilize, it is only done in extreme, and is probably a big taboo. Instead, there would be rigid rules about which clans can breed with which, in the the normal alien environment. On Earth, however the alien's moral code is broken, and they are doing all sorts of bad things, to their eyes as well as ours.

This film looks so epic. It has aliens, robots, mech suits, it's shot like a documentary and it will probably have the coolest story. If you read D9.com and NMU site you know that the aliens are basically slave labor. Not sure what the humans are using them for or wont' let them go until they get their technology but it seems that finally the aliens just get pissed and attack. It probably won't be a huge blockbuster but it shouldn't be anyway. It's going be a cult film for us, the geeks. I hope it's just an epically great film.

I read the synopsys of the movie, and I have to say it will not get caught up on human morality... In fact, the whole thing might make the movie very neutral on the issua, and the audience will have to decids on who should get what they want. Here's what I read: Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Neil Blompkamp is a genius social activist! The part where the insectoid alien life form smacks the human into a tank is a subtle commentary on the generations of built-up rage from military and economic subjugation, on the part of chicanos and blacks. This is the most touching revelation of their struggle since "Mac and Me".

I have since the first teaser trailer I saw. Could be wrong. Hope I am. But nothing in this trailer has disabused me of the notion that this is gonna be some shit-for-brains lib polemic allegory about racism (gee, the ship's hovering over South Africa? Didn't see THAT coming.), internment camps a la Guantanamo Bay, and basically how suck-wind we humans are. Yeah, I sooooo need to see that. Pass.

Someone needs to have a word with just about everyone working in Hollywood right now. 100 years of cinema history and even the first guys realised that shaking a camera about was a mistake. Why is everyone doing it now. It's awful. Stop it.

Immigrant's Rights
by corplhicks
Jul 9th, 2009

I can just see it now-- an explosion of discussion about how immigrants are treated here in the USA. The USA allows a certain number of legal immigrants to enter yearly depending on various factors. Other than those are those who either arrive completely illegally or stay beyond the time they are permitted to remain-- illegals, hence. ACLU refers to "immigrant rights". And there is certainly an entitlement sentiment felt by so many of them who are here. Come on now, you know it's true. Just because they seek employment and are hired by citizens does not make it right. Fact is, they treat the border of this country as the finish line of a race-- once crossed, it's over and life can now begin here. Wrong. From my perspective, the solution is this: throw a ton of them out, keep a significant portion but require them to become tax paying citizens OR they leave. Require national ID, require employers to list all employees regardless of status or # hours/week, come down hard on companies that do not do this, etc.. Bottom line: let a lot of them stay, but require them to become part of America-- citizens who are fully assimilated-- not live below radar.

Way to miss the point. I did not "bash" people here to "talk about a movie", I am in fact, ENCOURAGING people to actually talk about the movie, but in a reasonably decent manner. I have no problem whatsoever using profane language to "blabber" about movies, I resent the recent spate of shit like this: ""...my ass steaming, bloody and with butter!" and "I wanna dip my BALLS in it!", not to mention the other plethora of homo-ass-raping-masturbation imagery that gets posted here in service to "blabbering about movies". Is it too much to expect certain level of intellectual decency along with opinion? I have no intention of visiting "another site", why SHOULD I? So mental troglodites like yourself and others can act like 12 year old Halo players and hide behind your keyboards and say sick and disgusting shit under the premise that you're merely expressing your opinion? Fuck YOU asshole, yet-another shit-tree lawyer slicing a narrowly-defined aspect of my posting and "taking me to task" over it while obviously completely missing the point. Take that "love it or leave it" shit and cram it asshole, it's not "hyperbole", it's simply revolting and unnecessary and defending it makes you look more stupid than those that trade in it.

I agree with you, malificus. It would be nice to read higher than 12-year-old spoutings SO often, but I've just gotten used to it. The best way to combat this is to post well-written opinions that make said drivel seem stupid.

Which really isn't hard to do.

Thus others reading AICN will hopefully respond to your well-written opinions with equally well-written opinions.

I've gotta say, though, I don't mind Harry's enthusiasm for this movie. After the nasty PG-13 tripe we've been force-fed all summer, this movie looks like a big fat banana sundae dessert.

R-rated? Check.

Strong language and bloody, pervasive violence? Check.

Good point, Grammaton. It is kind of the opposite of classic "Alien Nation." From the trailer, it seems like we don't want the aliens to leave.

The big question is why. Their technology? Fear? Maybe something not even touched upon in the trailer?

The premise certainly IS a new one and I'm excited to see where Blomkamp goes with it.

Why not let them leave?
by Big_Daddy_Nero
Jul 9th, 2009
09:10:08 AM
Well, in the trailer, the are questioning one of the aliens about their technology. Humans are still using regular things like helicopters and cars, while this giant device is hovering in the air, so the most likely thing is, we still don't know how their things work, and probably would somehow try to keep them there until we get that information. Just a guess. If we won't let them go, then they have something we want, but don't yet have.

I'm a bit intrigued by the premise which is kind of a surprise considering the familiarity of some of the film's apparent elements. I don't know anything about Blomkamp's abilities as a story teller...but if he's got Jackson backing him up, then I hope we get something unique and cool.

I think not-- only if the Aliens spend their money not on roads, schools and medicine, but on weapons to kill the humans. Only if the Aliens train their children in camps to fire AK-47s. Only if the humans offered the Aliens 94% of all the territory they seeked and permanent peace and recognition in exchange for cessation of daily missile launchings on non-Alien soil.
