Japan is a nation of geeks in a good way. They are obsessed with giant monsters (and robots) who will destroy the world because WW2 almost blew them off the face of the earth, so they became a peaceful nation that turned their understandable obsession with huge things blowing them up into being entertained by giant monsters and robots.

This is not a waste of money, it's a country expressing their unique culture in a unique way, to them it is culturally significant.

We take their pop culture, water it down/dilute it, dub it and give it a different name, twenty years after they are already onto something bigger and better. Japan is cool. I would love to go there someday.

Unless you live somewhere like Tokyo, (or you're a tourist who's looking for it, in which case you'll find it easily), you won't see any more of it than a westerner would see Marvel or DC comics on shelves.

Geeks are on the outside of the mainstream here as much as anywhere else. The only difference is that, as you said, they did get the shit nuked out of them, so often their stuff has that kind of theme.

Gundam is to the Japanese, what Spiderman etc is to us. It's one of the more mainstream brands that everybody knows.

It's the same as the U.K or the U.S, just where we have flying men with superpowers, they have robots. It's seems geeky to outsiders, because Japanese stuff IS geeky to outsiders.
