Sounds a bit like the Virtuality synopsis.

Really, ABC? I hate myself for having seen bits of that POS. Even James Cromwell in a flying Cadillac, which should have been unintentionally funny, wasn't.

These are the voyages of 8 astronauts from 5 countries. Their 6 year mission is a secret; there is something they need to do but we can't tell you what it is; to go somewhere and do something that may or may not have been done before (you'll just have to watch to find out).
REALLY horrible name

God, just the TITLE is a turn-off, inane and pointless. Not a good sign...plus, don't we already have the God-awful snore-fest "Virtuality" or whatever?

...but then again I love the near-future type shows like 'Star Cops', 'Space Island One', 'Planates', etc., so I don't exactly have the best taste in shows.
Will it have the same tired space plot lines?

It'll be 8 carefully chosen astronauts, the cream of the crop. Yet I predict one will be claustrophobic, one will freak out from the isolation, etc, etc. Basically, these professional astronauts will be shown to less reliable under pressure than any Lost character, who are supposedly random average people. That seems to be the only way space shows get written. And I'm betting it'll be small in scale. Will there be moon and mars bases? Exploration missions out to Jupiter and Saturn? Asteroid bases to visit and explore? No, I'm sure it'll just be one ship instead of building a working universe to storytell in. I would love to see a fully fleshed out space-faring culture that is colonizing the solar system used as a backdrop.
Wasn't this already done on a recent Fox show??

I don't remember the name of the show but it was on last week. Had a Holo deck like environment and the trip was financed as a reality show which was the weakest part of the show.
A "six-year mission"? Does one of them have pointy ears?

has huge potential. Huge. Most premise-potential ever. Now it's all about execution. They should get David Simon and Aaron Sorkin and Dave Eggers in a room to write it just to see what happens - it could be genius. And just call it "Gravity".

is the obvious reason for sending out a secret UN-style space mission.

They may be able to pull this off, but the genre largely appeals to men and Gray's Anatomy largely appeals to women. IOW, nobody wants to see Spock speechify endlessly about his feelings, we want to see him kick Kirk's ass big-time before he gets control of himself.

Their real problem is going to be how to replace cast members who act up when the story has them so far from anywhere more humans could board.

I'm not saying it won't work; I'm just wondering how carefully they're considering their audience. This could kill in England (where they eat up all the cheese Dr. Who can possibly mold), but IMHO, if it ain't an action show they won't pull in the males.
