DEATH OF A SALESMAN

11:28:36 AM
Billy Mays was probably the only TV pitchman I ever saw that came off as a truly decent guy. Reading up on him now, it's clear that he was also a total pro who really cared about his craft - and I never thought I'd considered salesmanship a "craft", but this guy was so good that he made me reconsider.

It's never too late to create one. I also believe it won't cost you any money. Jesus, Ed had more relevance and influence on the TV medium than Mr. Mays ever had or will. According to my parents my first words were Budweiser due to his commercials back in the late 60's. My mother bought Alpo for our dog simply because Ed would plug it on the tonight show. Give Ed some love!

yup..happens all the time. Seriously, all this celebrity worship might be coming to an end with the overwhelming stupidity at the amount of focus for a pretty blond, an old sidekick, and a washed up pop singer. Cap and Trade bill gets passed in the house last week, yet another nail in the coffin of what was America. That will impact everyone who reads this living in the US if passed in the senate, but all the dumb masses get is what they deserve...

Viewers of Pitchmen came to know Billy Mays as a genuine guy. A mench. He wasn't putting on a role in his commercials - he was just being himself dialed up to eleven. And he personally used and endorsed every product he pitched. If it sucked, he didn't pitch it.

Thus passes a really nice human being.

Billy Mays deserves a talkback...
by xXxJamiexXx
Jun 29th, 2009
11:57:39 AM
And let me tell you why. This site covers all things tv and movie related so yes Mr, Mays does fit in as he was a tv personality. It has covered reality tv before and you cannot tell me this site only caters to actors because if you can call even a percentage of those scumbags involved "actors" in that trivial bullshit you are clearly off your fucking rocker. As for those who complain in this talkback about Ed McMahn show some fucking respect. Yes he did die unfortunately and he did deserve a talkback but don't complain about it in the one for this guy. Because it is the epitomy of douchebaggedness to do such a thing. You probably wont be considering the type of person you are if you are low enough to do such a thing but you should feel deeply ashamed of yourselves.

Are you kidding me? This guy's not a celebrity--he's a fucking salesman, for crying out loud. A salesman--that's it. Not anyone of importance, and certainly not anyone worth mentioning on an entertainment fan site. I'm sorry he died, just as I would be sorry that anyone died, but really--what does that have to do with AICN? What the hell is going on with this site lately? Who's running the show? Why are you even mentioning this guy's death? I fail to see the relevance to entertainment. Are you going to start celebrating the deaths of lawyers, grocery store clerks and pool cleaners as well? A salesman? Seriously? For fuck's sake, guys.

The point is, this site SHOULDN'T be covering so-called reality TV. Reality TV is the infomercial of entertainment--it's no more intelligent or entertaining than the crappy, annoying Oxi Clean ads this late pitchman put together. This site used to be about cool news, but somehow, it has become very diluted by the completely pointless addition of articles about the shit that is reality TV--and, apparently, now about the even shittier shit that is infomercials. It's unreal.

Is that he spent his whole life working. First just learning his trade then as he plied said trade as a young man, he lost his first marriage to his craft just trying to provide for his initial attempt at a family. I like that he had his son working with him and seemed to have a good relationship with his father. I hope that (being as successful as he was) he had more time to share with his new wife and adorable daughter. I hope he rests fulfilled with the life he lived and that his family keep his memory close. He seemed very genuine and vital. He will be missed. tldr; I hope Billy Mays lived a life he was happy with. RIP Billy Mays PS Fuck that ShamWOW Dick. In the Butt.

A Talkback? For Billy Mays?
by Hervoyel

12:49:41 PM
Billy Mays died. So what? Who outside of some people who actually knew him cares? Why don't you just go through the obituaries and fire up a page for every motherfucker who died today and then repeat that until the end of time? Look, Billy Mays sold stuff on the television. If he "touched you" in some manner I pity your empty world because he was about as significant in most peoples lives as that guy who stands outside the titty bar in the French quarter of New Orleans handing out cards advertising the next show when Kitten Vuvlanonich is going to blow bubbles with her vagina. In this day and age you would think that above any other website online this one would know that the act of appearing on television does not make you a celebrity, noteworthy, or even talented.

Those other three, while sad, could have been seen coming for a while now. Billy was just about to be mega huge with Taco Bell, and his show was a lot of fun.

On one episode they showed him, his dad and one of his sons. And I was thinking how old his dad was and how we will be seeing a lot of Billy for a long time.

Billy Mays was a celebrity because most people know who he is. He is on this site because of the Coaxial aspect and because of the show Pitchmen, which had just been renewed for a 2nd season. Apparently he drew a crowd at public appearances and signed autographs...like a celebrity. I don't get your hangup or why it angers you so much. Maybe it's because you know you will never be known for anything more than being a douche on AICN. RIP Billy Mays, thanks for making the beard cool again.

Bill Mays is NOT part of the entertainment world. He was a salesman, nothing more. That was my whole point--the death of a salesman, while sad, is no more relevant to this site than the deaths of soldiers. Your comment about CNN completely misses my point--I'm NOT saying celebrity deaths shouldn't be covered on this site. I'm saying this guy wasn't really a celebrity--he was just an ad man. Why anyone would see him as part of the entertainment world, let alone a subject that should be covered on AICN, is beyond me.

You don't have to mourn anyone. And, judging from your posts, you won't, but will instead post repetitively about how ridiculous it is that you're being "forced" to show respect. But yeah, some people are going to take this opportunity to write sympathetic sentiments about a public figure that died. You should be grateful, as this allows you a platform to show how much you don't care. Everyone wins! Except Mayes.

He did become a celebrity from doing nothing more than hocking products, but being able to get his own tv show means he was more than that. Also, do you think a chain like Taco Bell would hire him if he was a nobody that nobody cared about. As for my 2nd response about you, that's general psychology. If you are an important person with self esteem, you would not need to get on a website and make fun of other people just to get noticed.

Wow...congratulations, you've COMPLETELY missed the point of why I posted the lists. I wasn't making any military statements or honoring the dead, and I'm amazed that THAT is what you came away with. As it happens, I'm very much NOT in favor of the military, and would be the last person to go about making pro-military political statements since I believe the U.S. military is currently engaged in illegal wars. But that's irrelevant. I used those lists because they were the easiest lists of non-famous people I could find online. But again, good job completely missing my point--well done.

Series7...dude, why would someone be jealous of a guy who spent his life hawking products? No, thank you. I'm not trying to disrespect the guy--as I have already said, I am sorry he died. But I just...ah, never mind, there's no point in my continuing this point. It's already done to death.

Mr. Mays, I hold no ill will against you and am sorry you died. If there are people here who considered you a celebrity whose death was relevant to an entertainment fan site, than who am I to say otherwise? Rest in peace.

Please forgive me for pointing out how utterly retarded it is to rush out thrown together obituary for someone not in the entertainment industry who had absolutely no connection to this site, the people who run this site, or the people who read this site. AND TELL ME HOW YOUR ASS TASTES!

You think it's retarded to run an obit for a television personality-- fine, your complaint is registered in the annals of talkback history. But understand, many of us think it's equally, if not more, retarded that you're in here repeatedly complaining about the decision to run an obit for Billy Mayes. And, being a talkback, the fact that you're SHOCKED that someone would criticise your pointless criticism is, well, retarded.

But, then, maybe this is less to do with Mayes' obit, and more about your stated desire to have guys taste your ass. Good luck with that.

He'd spent most of his life on the road, working hard to earn a living. He wasn't given a billion dollar empire, this guy earned every penny the hard way. Though he got divorced from his first wife, he did reconnect with their son who seems like a real nice as hell guy. He worked as a grip for Sully but is now directing. He's got that same Mays work ethic. He's good people.

I will type slow so you can understand. There are mulitple TB's on this site. Do either of you post in all of them? Most of them? Half of them? Do you post in TB's that are of absolutely zero interest to you? Then why the fuck would you post in an Obit that you have no interest in other than seeing your name come up and having someone respond? You are simply trying to draw attention to yourselves. Ok, you don't like Billy Mays. Dtay the fuck out of the TB. No one is forcing you to post. If it is no interest ignore it!

and rfid, posting military names, especially when you said yourself that you think the war is illegal, is damn sure a political statement. Whether you are too retarded to understand that, is another matter.

Why do you care? Obviously there are those of us that did feel he made his mark in society. How many pitchmen aside from Mays can you name? How many actually had a reality show based around them and their technique that did well enough (because I dunno, I guess people liked it), to not only get a 2nd season but also got him a gig with Taco Bell (if that is not Americana I don't know what is). The website is AintitCOOL and that is what I thought Mr. Mays was, cool. What you are doing in here, purposely trying to stir up negative comments is the opposite of that. Get a life.

And what are these "standards" that AICN has you think are in jeopardy of being overrun by unwarranted obits? The same standards that brought us GONE and ScriptGirl?

Guys, AICN isn't just a film site. If you think it is, you must have missed the articles about comic books, and tabletop and video games. This is an entertainment news site. He may have been a salesman at heart, but Billy Mays was on TELEVISION and was a minor celebrity because of it. To the guy who posted the list of dead soldiers... get over it. This isn't Ain't It War News. People like you aren't happy unless we're all walking around with the goddamn Vietnam Memorial tattoo'd on our foreheads. We get it, soldiers died. We respect their sacrifice. News of it is already posted where it is appropriate. THANK YOU. And yes, AICN did fuck up when they overlooked Ed McMahon.

Nothing personal against Mr. Mays, but... we're really lamenting the passing of a huckster? Everything he sold was crap product designed to generate profits from the non-refundable shipping and handling.

But no, all of you gossiping turds with nothing better to do have turned this fuck into some sort of psuedo celebrity. Unless AiCN is going to turn into a fucking obituary section if you keep this up. Who's next? "AiCN mourns the loss of Bobby Slackpenis from Big Brother 3 (UK).... breaking news... AiCN regrets to inform you that the guy in the purple shirt who spilled a beer in the 3rd row at Wrigley Field during a Cubs/Reds game broadcast on ESPN in 1993 has succumbed to his battle with toenail fungus" ??? You fucked up again. It's rather subjective whether you choose to post memorials about McMahon, or other celebrities, but even in the age of the internet, where 15 minutes get doled out all too easily, one thing I do know is that a pitchman such a Mays who created nothing, wasn't an entertainer, and generally had nothing to do with good movies and TV gets a fucking memorial post. How far the standards for this site have fallen.

it was fashionable to wear faux-mourning like a charity ribbon.

Besides, Jack Elam was actually a film icon. But, that "icon" word gets pissed around so much it hardly means anything any more. And, he never appeared in a Batman movie or one with cgi robots. As far as I know, he might never have appeared in anything produced for the direct entertainment of idiot twenty-somethings, so they might have missed news of his death altogether.

I don't care.

by Hikaru Ichijo

he reinvented the television sales pitch by taking it back to basics. His style was a throwback to a simpler time and it was extremely effective. Anyone who comes here posting opinions in the hopes of appearing clever is pretty much falling on his/ her face because that is not how you approach Billy Mays or the function he performed. Even though he isn't a celebrity in a classic sense, he was on TV and at the top of his game. He is the first recognizable pitchman in over twenty years, and since everything we come to AICN for involves serious advertising, it is appropriate to mark the occasion of his death. Ed McMahon was clearly overlooked, but that another argument altogether.

Lazy young Hollywood!

STEP THE FUCK UP, SHIA!

TMZ just announced that neither Jackson nor Rowe were biological parents of Blanket or his sister. And, since TMZ were first with the death scoop, we have to treat them like serious journalists now.

I'd love to see Grandma Jackson dragged into court to answer the "who's the daddy?" question.

I think he died about 6 years ago. What bothered me at the time was they were reporting some really obscure deaths. Elam had more than 200 acting credits in his career and actually is a film icon - unlike so many others. I wrote to several AICN people and asked them to right the wrong. They all fell on deaf ears. I have a feeling they're doing the same with others regarding Ed McMahon.
