i'm really hoping i'll like this show, as payne is one of my favorites (don't know much about the lipkins, though), but i'm afraid my own feelings of inadequacy will keep me from warming to it. it'll be rather awkward watching it with my girlfriend -- almost like watching porn in which the guy's cock is so distractingly big that i can't enjoy the scene for what it is. douche chills.

Brendon Gleeson as Winston Churchill is excellent. The production values are very good too. It's amazing to consider the life and contributions of Churchill, and where we would have ended up without his leadership. But, if you like shows about large penises, I guess HUNG is more your speed.

And about bombing civilians, but those were the rules of engagement on both sides of World Wars I and II. I'm not saying Churchill was a saint, that would be wrong and silly. I am saying he was a consequential figure who did more to thwart German tyranny than anyone else in his position. And I'll take an imperfect man who is able to stare down the truly racist mass murderer Adolf Hitler.

are generally known as fundamentalists. I'm not saying "Human Smoke" is incorrect because I haven't read it (I know of it, though). But the mistreatment of fleeing Jews by the US and Europe is a well-documented side-issue to the bigger picture-- that Churchill was integral in the West's ultimate victory over Germany. There are no perfect heroes in history, I've accepted that fact long ago. Deconstructing Churchill might seem like an honest take on history, but I think doing so skews too far to the negative, overshadowing his essential contribution to a greater good.

Between In Treatment, Eastbound & Down, No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Flight of the Conchords, and True Blood (though mostly as a problematic guilty pleasure) I think there's been a lot to love on HBO lately. Sure, they had an impossibly perfect streak there where The Wire, Deadwood, and The Sopranos were all on the air at the same time, but should we really fault them because there's not a show of that caliber on right now? Those things don't just happen. Those shows are all among the best ever. They're not always going to have best ever caliber stuff on the air, but between what's on now and what's in the works I think there's a lot of great stuff on HBO.

I mean Jessica Alba and her creed of talentless younger actresses should by no means get paid for what they called acting!

Do I think they should show some skin? Hell yeah, its not like people are busting down the door to see their movies.

What we get are cockteases and little payoff.

Guys may sound chavunist when they say so-so should get naked but we only say that because the actress we're referring to sucks!

I remember the joke in Scary Movie about the gay athelete and how it just went on forever, even to the point of a fake penis in the ear!

And women aren't excluded. I was looking at Degrassi recently nd its seems almost every girl is now gay!

...lead. However, there would still be bitching galore about it. By black people about being stereotyped (facetiously, of course), and by white people about the impropriety (**cough*Injustice*cough**) of it all.

That's why a movie like Boogie Nights would never have been the critical success it was if starred Taye Diggs or even Don Cheadle, who was in the movie, as opposed to Mark Whalberg.

A White guy with a big dick is a nice anachronism that makes us all feel good, or at least, ok, about exploring the dramatic, and in the case of Hung, the comedic potential in situations offered up by an otherwise taboo subject.

Then he pulls out after overflowing her poop chute and then she accidentally poops all over the bed from her bunghole being stretched out. That's a Tijuana Milkshake by the way.
State of HBO
by Dijonase24
Jun 28th, 2009
11:16:59 PM
That seems pretty harsh, Ash0k. I listed The Wire, Sopranos, and Deadwood as "best ever" caliber shows. Of the networks you mentioned I'd only say that ABC and AMC can claim that kind of quality (what with Lost, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad). I don't have Showtime so I can't speak for it, but I hear great things about Dexter. And with The Shield gone I don't really think FX has anything that would quite qualify, though Always Sunny and Sons of Anarchy are definitely up there.

My point was only that HBO seems to be far from done, and I'm surprised when people brush it off as easily as you just did. The first season of In Treatment was very good, and the second was as good as anything else I saw this year. No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency was offbeat an pleasant, and a very welcome change of pace for HBO. Flight of the Conchords competes with Always Sunny and 30 Rock for the funniest show on TV (in mine eyes, anyway). I liked Eastbound & Down well enough, but I know that a lot of other people absolutely loved it. True Blood is basically crap, but I think it's exceedingly enjoyable crap.

That doesn't take into account their mini-series and original movies (which are generally top-notch), the other shows I can't account for since I don't watch them, or the stuff someone else mentioned that's coming (Treme, the Atlantic City show, Bored to Death). Like I said, they're missing a show that gets mentioned as an "all-time great," but I don't really think you can fault them that. I've enjoyed everything I've watched on HBO lately so I feel like I'm getting what I'm paying for.

Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself I'm not wasting my money. Either way.

has nice potential. HBO is great, not sure what the bitching is about. Where's the love for Big Love? Flight of the Conchords was fucking hilarious, too bad Bret and Jemaine decided against a third season. Life and Times of Tim was something that caught me waaaay of guard with its hilarity, I didn't watch it till the season had run and now I can't get enough. Entourage is terrible now but still worth a watch just in case. Curb Your Enthusiasm is terrific, cannot wait for the new season with the Seinfeld cast. Eastbound and Down was funny, not as funny as some swear it to be but it grows on you quickly. HBO has all the broadcast networks beat IMO. easily. and I haven't even seen True Blood, vampires don't do anything for me but the prospect of anna naked is a plus

Yawning? So while watching a show about a guy with a huge dick, your mouth kept opening wide reflexively? I think your subconscious is trying to tell you something.

You know what's funny? Most of the people bitching about the premise of Hung probably list Boogie Nights as one of their favorite films. Also funny to see all the whining about male nudity as if it's so commonplace now. Really? Name 10 films or TV shows that have shown male nudity in the last two years. Now do the same with female nudity. Yeah, shut the fuck up with that homophobic horseshit.

In Quadrophenia Ray Winstone and Phil Davis share a bath. Not in a gay way (if you can actually believe 2 men can be in a bath together withourt being gay). In the 80;s French cartoon The Mysterious Cities of Gold the two little boys go swimming in the river naked. Nothing gratuitous, just had no swim suits so took off their clothes and jumped in the water. This is what we watched in the 70's and 80's in Europe.

Reading this TB makes me think of the Simpsons "Wont somebody think of the children!"

In conclussion I deduce real Americans get scared at the thought of naked men lol. Is that what your saying Ash0k? ;)

the simple fact is you shouldnt be afraid of penises or their mention because we all have one, acknowledging this fact, or even putting on a program highly relevant to this fact does not denote homosexuality. Its a show about a guy using his huge cock to bang chicks. nothing gay about it. Kepp your own issues ( with your intellect, sexuality, and penis size) to yourself. This is a good program . You were probaly one of those little creeps snickering at doctor manhattan's dong, telling yourself it was overkill , and no guys dick is that big flaccid. yeh keep telling yourself that.

Xenophobic? Check. Usage of the "libtard" insult? Check. Rampant fear of male genitalia? Check. Reliance on the "Real American" meme? Check.

You wouldn't happen to be republican, would you? I hope for your sake this is just your talkback "tough guy" gimmick. Because honestly, in the context of this talkback, your comments don't make a lot of sense. By the way, I'm Canadian. Let the witty, Limbaugh-approved insults fly!

As for the show, I appreciated that the supporting cast (i.e. his kids, the poet chick) looked like real people instead of airbrushed actors. Man, some of you are so quick to condemn a new show. Like I said in the Philanthropist talkback nobody read, you deserve all the shitbag reality shows and police/lawyer/doctor procedurals clogging the airwaves. Nothing satisfies some of you. There's a Hung pun hidden in there somewhere.

how his kids looked like schlubby regular kids youd see at a mall somewhere, not these picture perfect model types, not one but both of his kids were overweight, and actually resembled each other. nice realistic touch.

Problem is none of it interesting. They had the greatest show ever... Deadwood and shit canned it. What did we get instead? Lucky Louie, Tell Me You Love Me and In Treatment(Im fuckin tired of people in therapy). Gee where are those shows now?? Meanwhile HBO turns down Mad Men, which could have been huge for them. Only thing interesting to me is Entourage prob has a couple years left and The Pacific is next year.
Entourage?!

Now THERE is a terrible show, like fingernails on a blackboard. I've tried to watch it many times and every time it quickly reveals its truly retarded nature. It's like The O.C. with swearing, tits and ass. If you look up Ash0k's favorite word "metrosexual" in the latest dictionary, you'll see a picture of the Entourage cast. I can see why anybody who likes Entourage would be "bored" by Hung. It's not shiny and flashy enough. Perhaps a tinfoil ball is more your speed.

I'd trade Hung and Entourage to have that show back. That said, everybody get it that Hung is just Weeds with a male lead, right? It's got potential, but the pilot wasn't as funny as Herc made it out to be.
it looked interesting.

Terrible? Really? I didn't see anything wrong with him at all, although I did keep noticing how much he looks like James Purefoy when he squints. He felt very real, emotionally distant and his argument with the poet chick was great. If she wanted more than his cock, she wouldn't have hopped right into bed with him... twice. Finally, an argument where the man doesn't look like a total idiot.

Now, can you provide any examples other than a vague "he sucked"?

Not if it isn't. Sure, some people would knee-jerk in that direction but if: 1) They address the cultural stereotypes (might be a selling point for him!) 2) He is a multi-dimensional human being, with hopes, needs, dreams, family, career, etc, and not just a "type." 3) There are other black men on the show, providing balanced imagery. Then I'd say casting black would be a choice. I'd be nervous--not real happy with the black folks on "True Blood" (both men criminals, one gay and cringing in slave-like manacles. Yuck) but I'd be willing to give it a chance.

Since Jane plays a coach/former athlete, his kids would more than likely be pretty athletic kids. His son having painted fingenails, etc, is just TV show nonsense.

Actually the kids are the one thing the show got completely right. the kid wasn't that gothy. I'm originally from Michigan and have family and friends there still. Those kids are exactly like kids in Michigan. Pudgy, reserved, punky/gothy but not overtly so. Spot on if you asked me.

simply adopting a style doesnt make someone a weirdo this day in age, and at least here in california, i see plenty of punk/goth/emo kids in malls, on buses, everywhere, and i'm sure paramore and taking back sunday arent only selling tickets and cd's here otherwise they wouldnt be nationwide successes. wake up. all that counterculture "weirdness" you fear is become so ridiculously mainstream and commonplace no one who actually gets out even thinks twice about it. It's just fashion. It's harmless. Where you have your brown shirts and jackboots, this kid has spiked bracelets and lipstick, so what. "why would a television show for designed for entertainment think to create conflicting scenarios such as a jock dad with goth kids? That's so ludicrous and necessary? those yahoos at hbo can only be responsible! Surely there hasnt been contrived ideas in any family based sitcom on any other network before!" grow up.

I avoided this talkback before watching the show and when watching it with an open mind I found it quite enjoyable! The casting is good and while the first episode probably won't be remembered as one of the best, it nicely sets up the entire series and I like the possibilities of where it can go. Being someone from Detroit, I also really liked the fact that they've really taken their location to heart. They didn't just say "This show will take place in Detroit" and then film a bunch of generic scenes that could take place anywhere. I've been to every one of those locations in the opening credits and it was pretty cool to see them on an HBO show like this. Just my two cents.
Finally got around to watching it on DVR

Not bad. It's got some potential. They need to ratchet up the laughs, though. And they could have done a slightly better job casting ... I mean, I'd fuck Anne Heche straight or gay, but those two kids are downright unpleasant to look at, and Jane Adams ain't exactly eye candy. On the other hand, it was funny to see all the shots in and around Detroit ... funny seeing my hometown on a show. They certainly managed to find the worst of the dumps sitting around the city, that's for sure.

Yeah, teenagers just LOVE to emulate their parents, don't they? It's not like kids ever rebel against their parents or anything. Seriously, you're allowed to use your brain before you post.

Itchy, you'd be better off watching Entourage if you don't like looking at "unpleasant" people. This is what people look like in the real world, most aren't airbrushed, emaciated models.
