I've just been talking with a friend of mine who was involved with the organising of that press-conference. Apparently it was a total P.R. nightmare. Actors were indeed used and there were three rehearsals, all of which were fucked up by Jackson. The first rehearsal was just Jackson and Dermot O' Leary, a British television personality. There was no crowd at this point. Jackson had a speech written for him that was three short paragraphs long. He was unable to memorize it and didn't want to read it from a piece of paper. He rambled for a few minutes and even at one point said 'I love Vegas!' The second run through still had no audience. This time Jackson attempted to speak in a deep-voice which sounded unintentionally hilarious. He was also still rambling. The third rehearsal had the audience and they were told to scream wildly throughout the speech and to chant 'This is it!' Michael was told to be as distracted as possible by the audience. He suggested that he should dance and was advised not to. The third rehearsal went ahead and lasted twenty-five minutes. Michael said about twelve words. He also did a terrible spin and then walked straight into Dermot O' Leary who had to steady him. At this point there was talk of abandoning the press-conference altogether but Jackson said he would be ok when it was the real thing. The end result, whilst still pretty shambolic, was the best run-through of the day. Apparently Jackson was slurring his words all day and had to sit down frequently. Jackson also had an assistant who said over and over to Michael 'You're the King Of Pop, you're the king of Pop' and 'Remind these fuckers what they've been missing out on'. My friend said it was one of the most interesting days of his life. He also said that Dermot O' Leary was joking that the concerts would never go ahead because of Jackson's obvious drug problems.

And whatever box office revenues are sure to be preserved by this action, will be partially offset by the costs that they will have to incur by reproducing entire new prints. So in end, was it a business decision? Yes. Someone mentioned their friend helped organize it and what a mess it was, there was no way he'd be able to perform cause of the pills, etc. What I don't get is that the company behind the whole thing, AEG I believe, was monitoring him very closely during the rehearsals. They said he was rehearsing four days a week for something like six hours a day. They had A SHIT TON riding on these concerts. They sold something like a million tickets and wanted to singlehandedly build a new MJ empire. So WHAT THE FUCK is going on and what really happened? If your friend involved with the press conference is right, then how much did reps for the company know and see of his pill addiction and his supposedly frail condition? And I've read interviews with the owner of Centerstage in Burbank, where he was rehearsing, and he said that he was doing great and came in very dedicated to every single rehearsal. People at AEG said he was heavily involved in every single detail of the show and wanted to approve costumes down to the fucking stitching as well as every light and inch of the stage design. So somebody here is lying. I just don't see how they can feign that kind of shock when it happened if they really knew that things weren't so kosher with the show preparations. I actually saw a piece just a few days ago where he came in to help announce the dancers being picked for the show and to talk with some of them and he was perfectly fine... I mean he was about as clear as I've seen him since the early 90's. Clearer, actually. My guess is that there's gonna be a lot more information coming out confirming or denying a lot of allegations about him, his life, his physical condition, etc., over the next few months, if not years.

I'm saying that it make sense for movie folks to excise that bit from the movie. They're not just (or maybe not at all) doing it for the sake of not offending someone. They're afraid that when the joke is made, or even just the reference, it will take you out of the movie and be a distraction. Especially if thinking of it makes you think, "Oh, they made that when he was still alive. Too bad what happened to him..." etc, etc, and you've already stopped paying attention. By the way, to belabor the point outer have made, "censorship" is someone being forced to edit or remove something. It is not when they do so voluntarily because they're afraid to offend or because they fear losing someone's money. If the government says you can't do it, it's censorship. If your account says it's a good idea if you don't do it, that's business.
