His comedy just doesn't translate to the average American, plus...does this really seem like his comedy? This is not The Office or Extras, which for the record I think are absolutely brilliant and I think the BBC Office is the most brilliant tv show of all time; but this is him trying to produce a "mainstream Hollywood hit." Just like his previous ghost Dreamworks movie that bombed (and I've forgot the name); it was amusing and had funny moments but just wasn't him in the pocket.

Ricky Gervais proves, once again, that he is the master. Not only of comedy, but social commentary. 'The Invention of Lying' is as funny as it is biting, wholly original, and surprisingly moving. Is there such thing as an important comedy? Turns out there is, and this is it. If you're still reading this, you should stop immediately and go see 'The Invention of Lying!'"

Great call on Todd Barry, he's one of the best. Also, if everyone in the world doesn't know by now: David Cross. Also, Paul F. I've really been looking forward to this; Ricky (along with Steve and Karl, of course) is one of my favorite comedians working today. Even if not everything he makes is perfect, you can tell he's always challenging himself and at least trying to produce something a little more meaningful than the mass-produced pablum that gets marketed as 'comedy'. What made the original Office so great is how carefully he toed the line between humor and crippling sadness that exists in real life.

And how many other projects are there out there that aren't remakes, sequels, prequels, adaptations of books/comic books/TV shows/insurance commercials? This is as original a concept as we'll see this year.

Even if some of the humor in this trailer is a little broad, Ricky is definitely willing to cross/ignore the line of political correctness that stifles so much comedy--take for example any of his standup routines, which feature jokes like:

I think Schindler's List is a fantastic film. And I didn't watch it at the cinema actually. I got it out on video, about a year later - by mistake - 'cause I'd never heard of it and I was in Blockbuster sort of late one night. I was a bit drunk, and I thought it was a porn film. No, 'cause I saw 18 certificate, top shelf. I thought, oh, black and white - dodgy home movie, German sounding - they're the best, and what swung it was that quote on the back from Barry Norman: "Have a box of Kleenex ready". Rubbish, I used about two. There was a shower scene.

Script was good. Not great. Very funny at parts. The joke dies early on, however. I don't know. I think the concept was too simple to sustain a 90 minute movie. Plus, how it all wraps up in the script, was just bad. It had no real ending. The writers knew thay had to finish it in the next few pages and the way they decided to was just sloppy. I have to admit I admire the way he describes the man in the sky who fixes/causes everyone's problems. That was a brilliant angle. The beginning: funny. The middle: so-so. The end: bad. If anyone wants to read it, it is at simply scripts under the title This Side of the Truth.

Since we're throwing out names of worthwhile comics, I'll add Brian Regan. That guy can make me laugh with just the look on his face.

And does anyone remember a comic named Brian Haley? Big blonde guy with a flat top? He did one routine that I saw waaaay back in high school, that my friends and I watched and it absolutely killed us... then I saw him in a bit part in the worst movie I'd ever seen (McHale's Navy) and never again after that.

Oh, and after the Office and Extras, I'll give Gervais the benefit of the doubt on anything he does. So I'll check this one out.

Oh hell yeah, Brian Regan cracks me up, too. For years, he's been one of the funniest guys on the circuit and other comedians love him. What's amazing is the guy has a "clean" act - he doesn't work blue.

If you get a chance, check out his "I Walked On The Moon" performance. It's got some of his strongest material and some of the funniest faces ever made by a human. (There should be plenty of clips on YouTube.)

Arguably the two funniest men alive. I can't wait for this one. Extras and The Office (UK) stand as not only two of the funniest series of all time, but also the most relevant. This has to be good. Gervais is, and I say this with no hesitation, a genius. Saw CK in person a few weeks back and nearly peed myself. This will probably be too smart for a lot of Americans to handle, though (I say that both sadly and ironically, as I am an American) and won't do to well because people would rather see Ben Stiller spout senseless, Looney Tunes style catch phrases for their humor. Ben Stiller sucks.
