To be fair, the Twilight Zone episode didn't really fit the "original intent" of Matheson's short story either, at least in terms of the ending (to the point that Matheson used a pseudonym for the Twilight Zone episode and expressed his displeasure).

If you'd read Matheson's original short story, you'd know that it (Button, Button) was around long before Saw. So, although the Box may share some themes (vaguely) with Saw, Matheson, the genius that he is, already mined those depths expertly with Button, Button.

Matheson wrote the short story before it became a Twilight Zone episode (in the 80s). I think it's perfectly within reason to stray from the episode... Why? The short story only hints at the various possibilities and consequences of such a device and people in such a situation--not to mention the character who delivers the box to the couple. I'm willing to follow Kelly wherever he goes on this one...

The difference between Matheson and Dick is that... hmmm... Matheson could actually write. Dick is an idea man. Conceptual. Which is great. But, let's face it, the guy was an average writer of prose at best.

Matheson, on the other hand, is understated. Simple. Elegant. He's a great writer, and very few people seem to be aware of this fact. He's ridiculously good.

"Button, Button" was first published in Playboy, June 1970, a short story written by Richard Matheson. The story was republished as part of a collection of Matheson's short stories.

In the original short story, the plot is resolved differently. Norma presses the button, and receives the money - after her husband dies in a train incident where Arthur is pushed onto the tracks (the money was the no-fault insurance settlement, which is $50,000 instead of the $200,000 in the Twilight Zone episode). A despondent Norma asks the stranger why her husband was the one who was killed. The stranger replies that Norma never really knew her husband.

Richard Matheson strongly disapproved of the Twilight Zone version, especially the new ending, and used his pseudonym Logan Swanson for the teleplay."

You only got three chances in the Monkey's Paw, remember? One wish was for the money, one to bring their son back, and one to send him back to wherever he came from.

Anyway, someone up there is giving mad love to Dick at the expense of Matheson and King. To that, I cry bullshit!.

Dick was a terrible writer, terrible! He had one of the greatest Sci-fi minds ever but a very dry, droll, predictable, and boring, yes, BORING writer. I am well read but I'm not going to give you my resume to prove it, let's just say I've read enough to know that Dick isn't the genius that sci-fi fans, and only sci-fi fans make him out to be. Dick's ideas were fucking impossibly cool but he lacked the control to write them in a more palatable and enjoyable way. Matheson didn't have half the imagination of Dick, yet, his books and stories are so much better because Matheson was a great writer.

Now to bring Stephen King into this argument is to just open up a huge can of worms. The reason? Something everyone knows, even literary critics, but not a lot of people will admit.

Stephen King was blessed at birth to be a writer in the realm of Hemingway, Dostoevsky, Melville, he's got those kinds of chops. Stephen king, however, went a different route with his gift. He chose to scare us, entertain us, and make a shitload of money off of us. No one can begrudge him that decision, but no one can take away the talent that lies beneath the lifelong pile of cheap fiction he has created. Matheson and Dick don't compare. Just the sheer volume of top quality over a period of thirty years is enough to take your breath away; what an imaginarion.

Of course, he has tapered off and hasn't written any "A material" in a long time,it seems his hearts just not in it anymore. He is one the best writers of his era and he managed to turn that into a fortune too.
I'd push that button 6.7 billion times.

The Twilight Zone ending works better, at least for me. The one thing that gave them comfort, that made it possibly ok to live with themselves, takes on an ominous and very disconcerting meaning when the perspective changes.

In order to stretch this story out I suspect the third act of this movie will be the couple trying to get the box back.

Trust me, its retarded. I mean, maybe Kelly is going to make it a little better, but the short story was stupid.

I was riding my bike, at a pretty fast speed. Suddenly, I saw the mosy beautiful, purple & blue butterfly, inches in front of my front wheel.

I slammed my breaks on, went flying forward, almost landed on the butterfly, but managed to land safely & away from it.

The butterfly flew away & I'd done my good deed for the day. Then I saw this trailer.

Humans? I'd push that button faster than a pikey starting up a fairground ride.

Why? Because I just know some there's some fucker out there who'd do the same to me.

Press button, out pops a dick.

I also helped John Wayne Gacey evade capture for several weeks.

Actually, the Butterfly story is true. The type of story that sounds like a cheesy metaphor but isn't:-).

I had to mention it however, as I was already thinking about Karma etc before I watched this. Like "given the fact that good people don't always get what they deserve & bad people don't always get punished. Does saving the life of a butterfly actually mean anything? Or should I just be a prick, take what I want, when I want it, be rich, happy & successful & squash the shit out of butterflies for being dumb enough to get in my way?".

In that context, it's kinda weird that I came home & saw this.

I should probably mention that also where I am, there was an earthquake. It was level 4, which apparently isn't so bad, but I wasn't keen on it.

So, butterfly > Earthquake > trailer > = me feeling weird.

I saved a shark
by D.Vader

I was at the beach, went for a run during a storm, sought shelter under a pier. Saw that a fisherman from the pier had caught a 3 foot shark a few feet away from me. His kid came down and tried to pull it up but snapped the line. I asked the guy what he wanted to do and he just waved it off. So I thought for a moment, looking at the shark.

Then I decided to save it and started dragging it back into the surf. But the waves kept knocking it over and flipping it instead of taking it out to sea. It was dying and was dead tired and wasn't getting any oxygen. So I tried pushing it through the water to force its gills to work. It kept getting flipped. Kid kept telling me it was dead, but he'd thrash his tail every once in awhile.

So I kept trying and eventually, a good wave caught him and took him out. I saw him getting flipped around again on the next wave, but as it took him back out again, I saw his dorsal and tail fin right it self correctly. On the next wave, he was gone completely.

I felt good.

When I was maybe 10, I found a smashed egg on the ground under a tree, with a half-born chick, twitching. Maybe the Mother had decided it wasn't good enough-or a bit simple or something ;-)-& thrown it out.

I tried to save it & a kind old lady noticed & gave me an egg carton & some cotton wool. I spent the hour-long journey home breathing on it to incubate it & hatch it.

When it hatched, I gave it to my brother, who's friend had a bird house. They put the chick into another bird's nest & we sat in his kitchen to witness the end of the miracle we'd taken part in.

The bird came back & murdered it up. Murdered the fuck out of it, bigstyle. The moral of the story? Don't fuck with nature.

That'd make a good short film right there. Any film students here should take note if you're looking for material. Of course, you'd have to come close to killing a shark to film it... or get some really good-looking fake.
Also, there's a short film on Youtube

I like your take on King. That man can spin like a spider, but somehow ended up being the Danielle Steel of horror. His influence is massive and undeniable, but when he really had his chops his heart was in fun pulp. He only started trying to write prestige books after he ran out of steam. Hard to not give the man his due though, when you look at his impact on film alone the guy is basically the bedrock of modern horror. By the way I think you're a bit unfair to Dick who is not a terrible writer at all. A bit bland and utilitarian sometimes, but can you honestly say something like The Man in the High Castle is terribly written?

everyone who's saying that the story won't work as a full length film is completely off base. The script widely expands on a number of subjects to keep the viewer intrigued/entertained, and is imho a fine sci-fi story. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying you have to like it or else your stupid or sumthin like that, but I'm just letting you know there is much more to the story than the original short.
Where can I find the script?

Or any pre-release, unreleased, shelved and/or defunct script for that matter? I'm a screenwriter. These things interest me. Oh and if anyone has that Cat's Cradle script that Richard Kelly apparently wrote in a week I would KILL to read that as Cat's Cradle is the #1 book I would like to adapt if given the chance. The Sirens of Titan is #2 of course.

How does anyone think this movie has merit? Yet another one of those non-risk Hollywood "non-scripts", as in "let's take any short story that was previously successful and pad it the fuck out into 2-hour-plus, FX-laden, backstory-ridden, slick-summer package". As long as audiences support this rotten, cowardly trend, Hollywood will keep on mining "that which has worked before". Hollywood has lost its balls and its brains. Matheson told great short stories. Emphasis on short. Enough of Hollywood raping good, simple material and dressing it up like a Vegas-whore brochure!

in my humble opinion, due to the simple, yet very effective ending. The idea of having aliens in the mix (i assume the lady with the black eyes and weird brow is an alien, what else would she be? A demon?) seems too dark city to me. I hope it's not another alien/satanic experiment.

R U kidding me? Ok, so Kelly watched every single Kubrick film and said, to himself, oh i got an idea. The TZ episode was great and there was a great deal at stake. I have had the displeasure of meeting Kelley at Sundance at few years back- ass clown. His friend were great but Kelly, not so much.

I consider him perhaps the best science fiction writer of all time. His name is not familiar because he wrote mostly for the small screen. I was not aware of him until the day I finally figured out that ALL of my favorite episodes from various tv shows were written by the same author .. from the Twilight Zone to The Trilogy of Terror to Night Stalker to Duel..
