Very cool to hear Peter Craig and Keanu are consulting so closely with Sunrise. This gives me more confidence. I never saw "Cowboy Bebop" on television, but a friend loaned me the super-remastered DVD set and I really dug it. Funny yet serious, highly creative plotting with unusual (and often badass!) science fiction elements, sympathetic characters, punch you in the face battles, and a funky jazz soundtrack. I wish Peter Craig and Keanu luck. Give us something sweet, boys!

As many red flags as this movie is raising, what with it being American-made and Keanu's involvment, if Watanabe is involved and doesn't allow the producers to railroad his opinion, I'll be happy if he's happy. In the end it can never be Cowboy Bebop. So I'm already prepared for some form of a shortfall.

I really don't see how Ed would translate to live action, as that is a type of character that would not work well outside of anime imo. Also the show worked for me because of the great characters and the investment in them over the course of the series. I don't really see this working as a one off movie, heck the actual Bebop movie itself didn't really work, was a bit pointless imo.

don't puss out on the apocalyptic tone and make it about fun robot action. Because watching it as a kid, what blew my mind was watching the earth get 99% destroyed, and not really ever recovering from it, and things just getting worse and worse for humanity as it went on. Despite all the bubble and inane dialogue, it was pretty dark stuff for an 80's kids cartoon.

I would LOVE a WELL-MADE live-action Robotech, and with the names attached to it so far I'm prertty optimistic. The best thing they could do is use Macross Zero as the jumping off point, rather than diving straight into the original Robotech. Or, use much of the backstory that was created for the Robotech novels. There's lotsa cool stuff there. Most importantly, don't fuck with the designs. Macross Zero proved that the original Veritech designs look fuckin' awesome when done with high-quality CGI, especially when the series directly contrasted the design of a Veritech to the design of an F-14. Very cool. Finally, MORE DESTROIDS!!! My biggest complaint about Robotech was always how the Veritech pilots got all the glory, and the Destroids were merely extras getting blown away in the background.

I don't think they ever said they were white, dude. It was left unsaid. It was a Japanese show taking place in the South Pacific though so you do the math. In the English version the characters were given new or americanized names. It's futuristic though so perhaps it's intended to be mutli-cultural. Either way I was just making fun the ridiculous people crying racism over the casting choices in the upcoming Airbender film.

Robotech seems to be getting a good writer! And Cowboy Bebop will have close involvement with Sunrise and Shinichiro Watanabe!!! I'm not too enthusiastic about Keanu Reeves, but maybe he can pull it off! After all Spike is rather soft spoken and rarely ever blows up for some emotional performance, and Keanu "knows kung fu." To make the first movie work, let it cover the first 5 episodes up to Ballad of falling angels. Let the main movie focus only on Spike and Jet, let it begin with the 1st bloody mary ep with the cartel after the drug, transition that plot into a big casino owning cartel that has Faye Valentine cornered into working for them as a secondary character in the movie and culminate the plot leading into Spike versus Viscious in the Church. Leave further development of Faye and Ed's appearence for sequels. Maybe the dog too, but frankly we can do without Ein, or just have him in there from the start as Jet's pet running around the ship. Or just bring him into the picture alongside Ed. And Royston Lodge... given all the legal brouhaha over Macross it's likely a lot will be changed with Robotech, very likely the mecha designs too unless something gets worked out. This is the one time where Hollywood might change things and it wouldn't be their fault. But I tihnk they can still stick closely enough to the originals without infringing on them.

Spike's the sort to normally keep his emotions in check... except when Viscious is around. But it is tough to picture Keanu doing humor and Spike's pretty cool and cracks corny jokes and sarcasm quite a bit... Keanu is apparently also trying hard to make this film happen and say what you will about him, but he's one dedicated mo-fo... They should just get Watanabe to direct.

Didn't read Child 44 but delved into Secret Speech and wasn't too impressed. Basically a series of not-too-interesting action sequences with not-too-interesting characters. I'm a huge fan of the original Robotech but it's an epic and frankly, I don't see how it's going to be possible to make a coherent, substantial two hour film out of it.

I haven't seen Keanu this publicly excited since Bill and Ted. If he really has the passion he seems to for the show maybe this will work out after all. I can't really feel any true optimism about this yet though. I'll feel much better if they get Yoko Konno(sp?) and the Seatbelts on board for the soundtrack. It wouldn't feel like Cowboy Bebop without it.

The first ep. at least everything mentioned so far indicates this. so no ed, faye, or ein. I personally think Keanu is perfect for the role, they look alike and act very similar. A bowl of Neo with a pinch of Ted and you have Spike. And I'd be more impressed if they got David Lucas to play spike over Steve Blum :P
