While I doubted your judgment on Armageddon, I'll skip Transformers II flick. I might bear to watch it on a free rental (no Red Box dollar) to see how wretched the movie really is. I'm a little surprised you are considerably more uptight when you expressed concern about unmitigated foul language in Transformers II flick. It's PG-13. From your description, it sounds like it's close to an R with raunchy humor geared towards children and teenyboppers with deceptive marketing focused on the action scenes.

I haven't been to the movies since I saw that over-glared POS Star Trek, and based on your condemnation of Transformers II along with T4, I'm glad to take your advice and skip the movies this summer. It's more refreshing watching great classic movies in black and white on DVD, so one would not have to be reminded of the godawful inferior, foul, hyper-edited and grotesquely violent movies out in theaters now that undermine the faith in recent movies.

And honestly, the farting robot sounds like more of an aesthetic choice that was most likely Bay's. He looks at the finished shot and decides "Its not interesting enough, have that robot fart as it runs." That makes more sense to me than having a screenwriter write it.

Also, I think Orci already confirmed the Twins came from Bay's head and they had to integrate it into the script.

If you'd have done the same for TERMINATOR: SALVATION rather than spewing kneejerk vitriol i'd have had more respect for your opinion - I wouldn't have agreed with it (I still think T4 is a far superior film to TF) but I would have respected it.

Is American mega pop star Britney Spears set to return to the big screen, seven years after starring in the box office flop Crossroads? According to reports, Spears has been offered a part in the upcoming Holocaust film The Yellow Star of Sophia and Eton, which integrates time travel, concentration camps and a love story.

If she accepts the role, Spears will be taking on the title role of Sophia LaMont, a woman who invents a time machine and succeeds in traveling to the time of the Second World War. According to the script, LaMont ends up at a concentration camp and falls in love with a Jewish prisoner named Eton. However, the budding love story is cut short when both are killed by the Nazis.

Spears is currently on tour promoting her album Circus. In stark contrast to her thriving music career, Spears' movie career never really took off. Critics panned her role in the teen comedy Crossroads in 2002. Since then, she has appeared in guest spots on TV series such as Will and Grace and How I Met Your Mother.

Filming of the new movie is set to begin in September.

Director Michael Bay insists that the bumbling 'bots are just good clean fun.

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters serve no real purpose in the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

The movie could have lost 90 minutes from the run time, and you wouldn't have missed a thing. Apparently, you can sit down for the movie, watch it for a while, get up, drive away from the theater, go home, balance your checkbook, do your laundry, come back to the theater, sit down and you'd be just in time for the action packed part in the 3rd act. And the movie wouldn't have lost anything in coherence.

I thought the first Transformers movie had a bit of charm to it, largely due to the Spielberg-influenced 'boy and his car' storyline. I didn't think so much of it that I'd waste $20 in a theater to see the sequel. I'll likely wait for the DVD or HBO.

Anyway, the flick is what it is. If I do go with friends I won't be expecting a coherent story or 'acting' from Lebouf or Fox (by the way, is it me or does she, despite her hotness, look really plastic-y?). I also think Bay is over rated as an action director. There are other directors, like Doug Liman, who can shoot a better action sequence. Some of Bay's movies do offer an escapist good time though, even if it is junky, like watching a badly-dubbed Japanese monster movie, which TF was obviously influenced by.

Take heart lovers of good stories and cinema, good stories are out there or coming our way. I'm looking forward to Shutter Island, and there are also many fine new novels out there which I encourage you to read.

Lets put it this way - if you saw a bunch of guys wearing arm bands with Swastikas on there arms you might be alarmed, and if they insisted it wasn't because of the Nazis but because they liked Hindu culture you might be a little skeptical because really, who doesn't know about the Nazis. That is how some of us feel - really Lucas, you didn't see the resemblance between Jar Jar and some of the racist characters in the past. You're old enough to know better.

I also blame the writers who felt they could get away with it.

Transformers is aimed squarely at kids. It has no reason for such racist stereotypes. And the fact that the cartoon had them does not excuse it either. Plenty of cartoons were offensive or played upon stereotypes. It does not make them right.

Because those cartoon characters displayed traits that have historically been used in stereotypical portrayals of black people.

That is the thing about caricatures,they display stereotypical traits. And racist or racially insensitive caricatures (which blacks have had to deal with for a long time) are mostly negative traits. And the thing is many of those (mostly negative) traits appear in both Jar Jar and the Twins.

Now you can say it is unintentional, which is a fair argument, but don't say people are reading into something when American film (and especially animation - Coal Black and the Seben Dwarves anyone?) has been using these images and associations for 80+ years to make the connotation between them and people of a certain race. That is like saying people are crazy for seeing Christian imagery in the Neo character from the Matrix just because he is the "one" and he returns from the dead. Even if such imagery wasn't intentional, it is would be very rational for people to notice it and come to a conclusion about what the filmmakers are implying.

I think there's more than a little hypocrisy here though. There's been plenty of racism used for comedic effect in a myriad of films these same reviewers, here and elsewhere, have never said word one about because they like the movies the scenes were in.

Two biggies that come to mind immediately are Blazing Saddles and Animal House. Hell, there isn't a single Mel Brooks movie that doesn't have wanton displays of racism of one kind or another, especially directed at his own race.

So yeah, there's an overreaction going on here, but at the same time Bay and pals should have fucking known better. (But really people, isn't this just one of a billion things wrong with this movie anyway, rather a minor problem compared to most everything else)

It's a curious thing to experience with your eyes that which by all rights should be awe-inspiring and mind-boggling, yet is no more exciting than watching a snail crawl across a patio.

The movie looked amazing. The effects were all top-notch and you could definitely see all the money on the screen, but it was utterly uninvolving and tedious. Afterwards it was almost like a dream -- did I actually see all that stuff? Why don't I feel excited or charged after witnessing all that cool carnage? Is there something wrong with me?
