"It's long been known that Laeta Kalogridis has been working on Battle Angel and The Dive for James Cameron, and her work on the Avatar script has also recently come to light. Kalogridis has been a very well-respected screenwriter, but until now it seems she hasn't had much luck getting her screenplays produced. Well, that's about to change - Kalogridis' career is really heating up. Later this year, along with a little movie called Avatar, she has Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. She is also working on the script for the action-comedy Witchita, which will star Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz."

Though with the budget and when its being released, I think it may be a huge flop. But I'm sure it'll be watchable at least.

BUT...with a price tag of, what, 300 million or more, who in their right mind thinks this movie is going to make its money back, much less be a blockbuster/game-changer? That's at least 600 million to break even, and probably more than that. So this movie would have to do Dark Knight business to be a hit. I have my doubts.

Bay thinks he's all big and bad. It's time JAMES CAMERON came out of his hole and reminded the world why he is KING OF THE WORLD (alongside STEVEN SPIELBERG). Hacks like BAY need to be reminded of such things.

What would you guys think about that? Take it back to the old school days of "Psycho" and even "Star Wars," and have zero footage. That way, everyone would experience the whole thing with zero idea of what to expect. Thoughts?

AVATAR will have a bigger audience than Dawson's Trek, TERMINATOR SALVATION or TRANSFORMERS?

No.

Huge opening.

50 - 60 % drop on the second Saturday.

More sequels and re-envisionings and movies based on video games, green-lit.

Industry, unchanged.

i sincerely hope Avatar doesn't change a thing for filmmaking, but that it does make Bay and Abrams quiver in fear as Cameron stands astride the Straits of Spielberg like a towering Colossus... he will let them pass through no longer.

I want a kick-ass space military action movie. But the only thing that makes that worthwhile are the characters.

Why does The Rock kick ass? Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery. Right? WRONG. Because Stanley Goodspeed and John Mason kick ass, that's why?

Why does Pearl Harbor suck? Because Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Beckinsale suck? WRONG! (Well, maybe...) Because the characters, whose names I can't even remember, stink. Bad acting, bad directing stinks. But bad writing just can't be undone.

Avatar can fuck our eyes all it wants. But if she doesn't have a good personality behind her, there's no sense in keeping her. Please Jim, don't let Avatar be a one-night stand. My eyes can't stand the tease.

3d is not a gimmick anymore. It's here to stay. Will everything be in 3d? Why.the.hell.not?

Does everything need to be in color? Have sound? Yes, there are people who cannot seem to experience 3d. But there are colorblind people as well, and that didn't stop color. It's just not a fad this time because it's nearly perfect, doesn't cause universal headaches and is full resolution/full color. People that think it's "just a fad" are the assholes that said the same thing at the advent of VR. Now we've had to wait... what?... another 2 decades for advancements in VR and STILL no home hardware for motion tracked, head mounted or retinal projection display. If all the people that poo-pooed all over rudimentary VR 15 years ago without even trying it had their way, we'd wait another 20 years for it. Instead we have overpriced, same old same old 2d video games (sorry, that's what they are) and consoles with advancements that are essentially just miniscule improvements over last year's photo-realism coupled with interactive hardware that comes CLOSE to immersion but never really achieves it. All when the technology for immersion in 3d is here and HAS BEEN here for almost a decade. The only risk ever taken with it was the horrifically awful "virtual boy", which looked like 30 year old technology in 3d. That and it's name sounded like Michael Jackson's Holodeck fantasy. The industry thought of that single failure every time it heard the words "virtual" and "reality". So yes, everyone. Let's shit all over the next great thing that will save the industry from complete meltdown failure. Not that it matters. Once Cameron's film comes out, it will not be a matter of choice. Your eyeballs will spontaneously dampen involuntarily like the crotch of a 13 year old at a Jonas Brothers concert. And afterward you'll be praying to your god asking him why he can't make the "bad thoughts" go away.

The point is the same stuff was said about Sky Captain which is being said at this presentation. "The visuals were great, the technique is revolutionary, this film will save the movie industry" - Sky Captain didn't save the industry and I suspect the same thing will happen with Avatar. Don't get me wrong, I love Sky Captain, and I'll probably love Avatar. But this is not going to be the saviour that the film bosses want. (and I don't think it'll make $1 Billion)

Some say he is a hack. They are wrong and then some. This man pushes the technological envelope like no other director in history. He makes films that defy mere standard storytelling. He is frankly the most revolutionary director in recent memory. The water tentacle in the Abyss was the first CGI shot ever in cinema history. Anyone who can honestly slag Cameron off as a filmmkaer is truly in denial and full of shit. He is apparently a hard case on the set but look what he does and creates as a result. Never know. He may get pissed off enough to do his own futuristic take on Terminator. We can only hope so.

1) The new 'Trek' was badass and I'm sure long time fans had their gripes, but 'Star Wars' fans would BEG for a movie of that caliber... or at least this one would.

2) In the event 'Avatar' kicks ass, that does not mean that 'Trek' suddenly sucks or that we need to start the comparison wars. FOR ONCE can fan boys and girls just be happy they got two sweet Sci Fi (read: SyFy) flicks and call it a day?

first of all, avatar's bugdet is around $200, not 300. time magazine said $300 but they had since admitted they were mistaken.

second of all, have you seen any marketing hype yet for this movie? really? how about zero? what does that say about the marketing cost of avatar, compared to, oh say, ANY blockbusters released recently?

the movie will make its money back, easily!

but really, every time a movie is about to release... every single fucking time, you geeks just start on giving your box office prediction. are you a financial analyst or movie lover???

let movies be movies. fuck box office! michael bay and rolland emmerich are two of the highest grossers in movie history. so fuck box office. fuck your prediction and fuck today's generation of pseudo movie buffs.

good to know logic reigns in this tb. sky captain sucks so avatar must be. wow. cameron did T1, T2, truelies(underrated among fans, but apparently the movie to ripoff for young hollywood directors these days), abyss, titanic. what had conran done before sky captain? yeah, nothing.

there's nothing revolutionary about sky captain. the story has its charm, but the color palette is an eyesore, and the design has the aesthetic of a 5th grade kid's drawings.

comparing avatar's potential to that silly movie is just stupid.

but people saying that AVATAR will "revolutionize the movie industry" and such are a bit out of their minds I think. I'm sure this film will likely kick much ass and make obscene amounts of money, but it seems people are forgetting two things...1. how much this film is costing to make in the first place and 2. how long it's taking to make! A movie of this magnitude will probably only show up in theaters once every 2 or 3 years...it's not gonna become some standard like it feels people are making it out to be! Someone mentioned SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW earlier in this TalkBack and how that would change the way films were made...well, no, not really. That sort of process is great for films looking to be specifically stylized...but certainly not the norm. People said that FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN would change filmmaking forever too because of the "photo-realistic" "actors"...again, not the case. If these stylized films (which I do enjoy quite a bit myself mind you) were to become the norm, then SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE probably would have looked something more like SIN CITY or THE SPIRIT! So yeah, they're great when they come around, but as for any film...if the story isn't any good then all the stylization (or 3D or whatever other gimmick) in the world isn't gonna mean a thing. But then again...it's always nice to have guilty pleasures as well. (Damnit, I came into this post with a point but it's late and I'm tired so blah...screw it.)

All credit to MArketshaw: WARNING: FOOTAGE DETAILS BELOW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! Hey man, This was all part of the 20th Century FOX 2009/2010 presentation. We saw clips of movies not out til november '10. But then Avatar was introduced and the crowd went silent Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang stepped on stage and introduced us to their characters and a brief into of the story. They then announced we would see a large range of clips in sequential order We got to see clips with their scene numbers attached. Which ranged from sc. 8 to scn 48 -54 til 82. 82 is the last fully completed scene we saw which was only in act 2 of the film. The clips were amazing, can't go into detail too much but we see Jake a lot. My memory of quotes is fuzzy cos of the impression the screen makes. First clip showed us a militairy briefing with Stephen Lang's character about how brutal the N'avi are. He says: "My job is to keep you all alive, but I'll fail." Jake is in a wheelchair listening to the brief. Next scene we get into the lab, see two N'avi on labtables subdued. Jake enters lab with Joel Moore's character Norm Spellman who's a new doctor but knows a lot about N'avi. Next scene we see Jake and Norm entering two tanks. Jake is getting out of the wheelchair, tries to get into the tank. Someone wants to helps him but he says he can do it himself and gets his limp legs into the tank. Sigourney's doctor Grace says "So you just came out here without any training and decided to get in on this? " Then we see them take hold of their N'avi's. Norm is adjusting slow, while Jake stands up, wobbles, hits stuff with his tail and then STORMS out of the base into the wild. Until now, all we saw was the base in 3D, mostly humans and now the 2 N'avi Avatars. They look NOTHING like the drawing you've seen. They're living creatures with blue skin, bigger yellow eyes than humans with tails. The avatars even look like their human connectors. You will NOT believe the detail. Jake's character will get a wound in a scene we saw later, it looked so real. You could see beneath the skin's first layer, like only real wounds show. We later meet creatures that look like the evolutionary link between a pherodactyl and a bird. They can connect with the N'avi and hunt with them. They connect with only ONE N'avi and do this by swallowing the N'avi's tail with their mouth so they stay connected. The world outside is amazing. It all lives, breathes and works. You will not believe the amount of leaves that look like someone created that jungle for real. Later scenes involved Grace, Norm and Jake in the jungle exploring. Jake encounters a animal which stomps towards him, Grace tells him to stand his ground. He does and the animal backs away to reveal a more sinister animal behind them. Jake fights it and runs. Next scene we only see Jake so I assume he lost Grace & Norm. He is being attacked by very very very nasty black dogs. Not only do we see their teeth, their gums look nasty as well. It's all so photorealistic you first wonder where they got these dogs. They look like our dogs but slightly different and it's only then you realise what this is. All CGI. Jake gets saved by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a real N'avi with bow and arrow. Afterwards he wants to thank her but she gets mad. She says "You not need thank me, this shouldn't have happened. They shouldn't have to be killed if it wasn't for you." The next scene we see is Neytiri and Jake on a treeledge entering a Pandoran village where seeds of a sacred tree touch Jake. I mean touch. They touch his skin and then some fly off while others get absorbed by his N'avi skin. After that: Cameron entered the stage. He talked about the beasts and how we now saw how it was to walk on Pandora. Now we were going to fly. We then get introduced to the beasts I mentioned earlier and a small scene of Neytiri riding one ends the scenes that were finished. Cameron then came back, talked about the specifics of the rendering already mentioned by others and then said: Now imagine 3000 of these beasts. One more scene was shown then of something that will be near the climax of the movie. A battle between humans and N'avi. It was mo-cap footage of humans with the template CGI. Best to describe it would be World of Warcraft on a high-end PC. That's what it looks like when it's 40% done. And that is NOTHING like it'll end up but it shows WETA, Cameron how the scene will play. And even in that stage, the amount of bodymovement is absolutely realistic. In that scene we also meet the bot that was displayed at the afterparty. What is most imporant about this movie: Everything lives and breathes. The tree in the scene with the sacred seeds glowed. Not the bast, but the tree underneath glowed like a living thing. Jake encounters plants which look like a kid's slide which shrink when he touches them. Little fireflies and birds fly through the shots without being there. You just take them as the world, like a dove in Central Park. It's not placed there, it lives there and just happens to be in the shot. There's a shot of leaves somewhere which is so photorealistic you don't want to think it's CGI. You believe this world from the get-go. It's there, you don't need to believe it because you will experience it. The cast and Cameron came back on stage after the last clip, took a VERY VERY VERY long round of applause and the houselights came on. The audience afterwards was stunned. Everyone just gasped, wondered and just couldnt believe what they saw. [Cameron] is so proud of this movie and still handles it with great suave like he just folded a paper plane. When asked how long the movie is right now, he answered with "I don't [want] to say how long. That implies it's TOO long. Epic is more of the right word." He really shined when he told us how Steven Spielberg and Peter jackson are now working on TinTin with this and how he gave them to the studio for a week to 'play with it'. I am just mindbaffled how a genius like that can contain himself with something like this. This movie will change the industry. It can now enable me to play a character in a studio, then to be transferred into something different on screen so an audience will believe I am that different character. This is not the Polar Express style 'change of character'. This will enable actors to act without them being cast on looks, but on bodylanguage from now on. Fifty years from now I'll tell my grandkids I was at this presentation and witnessed it 6 months before the movieworld was changed. Only shame: I won't be able to see the final product like we saw today. With Cine Expo the most advanced projectors and audio is installed which won't be rolled out to most cinema's til probably next year's summer. But IMAX 3D will make this movie shine like never before, I hope. I hope this gives you an impression of what we experienced. I had a hard time putting it to words. You just can't fully do it.

I liked Sky Captain, but it failed to give the audience an "in" to the the story. What it needed was a conceit similar to PLEASANTVILLE where Sky Captain was actually some regular guy in our world who gets sucked somehow into this pulp serial universe, then has to defeat the bad guys and solve the mystery (and save and get the girl) before he can return. Would've been a huge hit if it had had something like that.

but the whole "man turns into... gets into... an alien thingy and becomes an alien and has a change of heart.." idea sounds really, really, really stupid. clunky and uninspired. why does he have to become an alien to understand their world? that's such a xenophobic idea. like saying "you wouldn't understand the life of the black man, you have to be black to understand it, whitey" why cant the space man have a change of heart because he has a heart in the first place and realizes "omgz, these aliens is neat! lets hold hands!" I hope this is... like a reverse Transformers. a property that is really stupid, but is amazing on screen when done right. unlike transformers. a really cool property that is a slo mo train wreck when done wrong.

I'm kind of sick of everybody saying "yeah, but what about the story and characters!!!" to everything. I agree, real depth to a narrative is an amazing quality, and a film with that trumps every one of the blockbusters this summer combined. But you know, a totally incredible aesthetic achievement is something to be celebrated as well, and can be just as important and have just as much of an impact on a viewer. I kind of think we've been taught to distrust style these days. Look, if this is pulled off the way people have described it, it will be amazing...a LANDMARK. This isn't just Transforminators or GI JOE with CG thrown everywhere for 'visual impact', we're talking about a potentially astoundingly realized world, with a beautiful artstyle that you can sink into. Surely, SURELY that's worth something. Film is a visual medium, yet we almost never see amazing visuals in mainstream productions. Finally we're potentially getting them and everyone writes them off and says, "Naw man, it shouldn't have been done because you can make a great film without much money on the strength of having great characters." The last point is true, but...are you people serious!?

You make a good point. It is kind of unfair of me to complain about Avatar because I enjoy a nice visual spectacle as much as everyone else. But like you said, the inevitable success of Avatar will spawn yet another series of sub-standard blockbusters (do I need to bring up TF2) that only do rely on CGI. I’m just saying is the scale is tipped a little bit too much to one side these days. In an ideal world, there would only be 1 or 2 Avatar-type blockbusters coming out and that would be it.

Exactly. These are extremely expensive productions. They definitely have their place, but we should only see a few made, of a very high standard and that potentially really give us something new. The rest of the big studio money that normally gets wasted on typical typical blockbuster crap could instead be spent on getting A LOT of fantastic scripts and concepts to the screen. As you say, this ideal scenario would only ever play out in an ideal world. Meanwhile the assault on intelligence and culture continues.

The CGI in T2 looks better than some CGI in movies made a decade later. I remember reading Cameron in an interview a year or two talking about the CGI guys, and how they were incredible brains, but didn't possess the ability to look at a scene and tell that it just wasn't right.

Cameron is a god but even God's can make crap. Cameron is not a gifted screenwriter at all and some of his dialogue is just as bad as Lucas.

3D for most is still a gimmick and having to wear a headset for over 2 hours is seriously uncomfortable.

The budget on this is rumoured @ $350M what were they thinking as it would have to make over $800M just to break even.

Everything shown and spoken about so far makes it sound like a big budget sci-fi art movie which if true means it has little mass market appeal beyond the 3D gimmick & directed by Cameron titlecard.

Cameron shoud have made Battle Angel first instead. This could very well be the biggest flop of all time.

You are SO right. Ripley was one of the best things that happened to the way women are presented in movies, although Cameron can't claim that as all his work. Ridley Scott had much to do with it. Alien: a movie where the lead is a woman, doesn't talk about 'a man', is independant and kills the monster. No frigging prince charming. I'm so glad things have moved forward since 1979! Sigh...

I will still be pissed if I see ferns and red woods on planet Pandora (I mean, if they MUST have Earth inspired flora, can they at least given them exotic looking leaves? The pictures I've seen look like normal Earth ferns) But anyway, I'm beginning to think that this might be one sexy ass movie afterall.

Remember how good the first half of WALL*E was? Remember how you turn the DVD off now once the second half starts? Sure it LOOKED good, but it was an insult to anyone who has ever felt anything other than shame at being a human being. Now imagine a whole spectacular 300+million movie that is everything that insulted you and condescended to you in that movie, but magnify it to about 10X. Do I *want* this movie to be great? Of course I do. JC has been away for far too long. But if this thing turns out to be just another Pocahontas-wannabe enviro-wacko diatribe about how, once again, America is the big bad evil enemy of all things green and sweet and nice and pretty, then yes it WILL change movies forever, it will be the final undeniable proof that people just don't WANT to see shit like that. That said, I hope that this movie does NOT play out like that, and that it is in fact the 'next big thing'. Here's hoping. ps, oh yeah, what do we get if Sky Captain is not any good (it wasn't)? We get Mutant Chronicles. (Don't lie, you know you watched it. The whole thing. I did, for free on HDNet, the only thing it cost me was a couple hours of my life and a small part of my brain that actually committed suicide during it).

no-where near Cameron's best, but its a best Bond film that isnt a Bond film imho. There are damn good action scenes (bathroom shootout, horse chase, Harrier Jet sequence), some really funny humour (Tom Arnold is actually funny for fucks sake, and how can you not love Paxton's sleazeball carsalesman?), and Jamie Lee in her underwear! Its also turned out to be fairly influential (mr and mrs smith and MI3 copy quite a lot from it just off the top of my head). Whether good or bad Avatar IS Cameron's TPM
by performingmonkey
Jun 24th, 2009

Lucas saw what Spielberg and ILM had done with Jurassic Park and realised he could then make TPM. Cameron saw what Peter Jackson and WETA Digital did with LOTR (The Two Towers particularly, with Gollum and the Helm's Deep battle) and knew he could make Avatar. HUGE amounts of money. Tech over story. This IS TPM 10 years on, there's no getting away from that fact, HOWEVER Cameron > Lucas and we must never forget that.

when you see the recent interviews with him he does nt come across as delusional like Lucas has for years. Also, Cameron has never gone back and altered his old films ala Lucas (even though he could if he wanted to), and he doesnt keep re-releasing all his movies, each time with new changes. And btw lets remember that Avatar was written in 1995 originally, years before LOTR. The only issue I have with your post is that Cameron has worked with groundbreaking (at the time) technology before. Both The Abyss and T2 were tech marvels, but Cameron still had the good sense to have a strong story that was aided by the special effects, not written for them. That's why Cameron continues to show hacks like Bay and McG that he is a god amongst retards.

you're missing the point regarding Cameron. Kief_Ledger has hit it on the head; this is Cameron, not Lucas or any other possible wannabe and Cameron does not sacrifice story or character on the altar of CGI or any other type of special effect. He uses those effects only where they enhance the story that he is telling, they are part of his artists palette, just as much as cimematography, editing, scoring, art design and so on. All those things are there for one simple reason; to aid Cameron in telling the best story that he can. He is fully aware of character and honours it above all and that is what makes his action scenes so satisfying; they are more compelling because he has invested time in story and made the viewer care about what happens to his protagonists. That has been a truism for all his films to this point so it isn't something that concerns me with Avatar. This film will be groundbreaking, I'm sure, but it won't have thrown out characterisation for the sake of a CGI Beauty Pass.
Eyeball surgery will be required prior to seeing this film.
by Clavius
Jun 24th, 2009
10:15:37 AM
At the entrance to each theater showing AVATAR, there will be a lasik-style clinic set up to adjust everyones eyeballs so that they will be able to properly receive the images being streamed into them.

Without this surgery, the brain simply would not be able to process the information streaming through the eyeballs and it would all merely be interpreted as static or noise within the brain.

Such is the advanced imagery we are about to behold.

Mankind cannot comprehend what it is about to see as yet, that's why we all must be altered surgically in order to appreciate it.
They will also be passing out towels and eyedrops after the film so you can get the Avatar cum out of your eyeballs, because they will of course, have been vigorously fucked by that point.

Colour and sound didn't give lots of people headaches. The problem with these 3D-glasses movies is that it's not a lot better than the red-blue glasses of old. There's more to 3D vision than stereoscopic separation. So it's *not* how people see the world. There's a noteworthy portion of the population (myself included) where the effect rarely works. Focus depth is missing. All I see is a darker picture with a fuzzy ghost image and the occasional pop-out, with headaches afterwards. Plus the glasses I got last time were scratched or dirty or something. Crystal-clear digital picture viewed through dark, smudged glasses with limited peripheral vision (which is bad for big screens)? Kinda self-defeating. I'd rather 2D over that.

I hope he holds it. That would be the shit if he previewed the 24 minutes and then just vanished for a few months. Let the legend build

Why does anyone doubt Cameron? Why are people doubting his ability to make a profit due to this movie's budget. UH????? History lesson anyone? I think Big Jim had been down this road once or ten times, and his movies usually do pretty well at the box office.

Why should money be the barometer for success for us anyway? We're fans!! We're not the fucking suits who sit in their ivory towers built with the flesh blood of remakes and sequels that turn a small profit. "Just remake twenty movies and they'll all turn a small profit and we'll make a killing with volume." "Oh yeah, by the way, what the fuck is Cameron doing, have you seen his budget?"

Jim, you're the fucking king, you know you're the fucking king which means you're probably not reasing this because you know you're the fucking king. Jim, please hold your cards close to the chest on this one, don't even tease us, don;t even fucking acknowledge us! A month or two before the movie hits, give us our trailer but nothing more. I am pretty much done with Bay. I watched the first Transformers in a state of pure numbness. I was hoping that maybe Spielberg might have some sort of positive influence on Bay. He did not.

After reading all the reviews for the second one, including negative ones from people that liked the first one, I will have to pass on this.

If I am going to see one dumb popcorn movie this year, it won't be this. It won't be G.I.Joe. It will probably be 2012 in November. I will see Public Enemies in July and Inglourious Basterds in August. After that, Where the Wild Things Are and Jackson's The Lovely Bones have my interest.

Oh, and of course Big Jim's Avatar. Those are gorgeous pictures up above. I would love to go into the theater in December just seeing those pictures and nothing else. I might just quarantine myself from further Avatar spoilers.

away from spoilers for Avatar. Sorry but I refuse to pay actual money to see a Roland Emmerich movie after 10,000 BC. That guy is nothing more than a modern day Irwen Allen. Agree about lovely bones and WTWTA. However im looking to Avatar to save the action/sci-fi/genre films for this year...
I have no idea what Avatar is...

...the history I mean, the origin of the story. But I can assure you I'm convinced it's going to look good. Will it change the movie industry? Doubtful. It may create changes in the way some films, or parts of films are made, though. Cameron did it with The Abyss and T2. Lucas has done it uncountable times. Jackson and crew did it with the LOTR trilogy. It didn't ALWAYS make their own films better, either. But they did create new hardware/software that is now used all over the industry. The problem, in my mind, is that if the story and voice work aren't completely stellar that it will just come off like another geek boy wank off session. Pixar films rule the movie universe because the STORIES are great. So, if the story is great with Avatar I have no problem believing that it could be "epic" and industry EFFECTING. Still don't believe it will be industry changing.

Jaka.....Cameron wrote a scriptment for Avatar
by southafricanguy

in 1995. The scriptment was basically a simplified version of the story with a lot of description of things and what happens, but not a lot of dialouge though. Basically it was a very detailed treatment (a precusor to a first draft script, similar to Cameron's spiderman scriptment). Anyway, after digtal domain did effects tests for it they realized that fx at that time werent even close to pulling it off. And if you read the old scriptment, which was circulating around on the web for a few years (i still have an old copy) then you will see that they were right. In fact based on said old scriptment and the description of things in there im still not sure they can pull it off fx wise. Apparantly Cameron dusted the old scriptment off about 4 years ago and took several months to write it. He wrote the shooting script with another writer named Laeta Kalogordis (who has been working on the Battle Angel Alita script for some timenow). She is widely considered to be a very talented writer, but unfortunatly her work has often been competely rewritten into crap, or butchered by producers/directors. This year however will see the first time that one of her scripts is made as it was written with Scorcece's Shutter Island, and then with Avatar, which as I said she has co-written with Cameron. Now, based on the old scriptment, the story was fairly straight forward (but you have to remember its just a scriptment), but there were many great ideas and really good potential for the story to be better developed upon rewriting. And based on a number of details that have emerged over time, there have clearly been many changes from the scriptment to the shooting script. Imho Cameron will have made sure the script was good first (hence I think one of the reason LK was brought in to write it with him)...

seeing that comparison dude. Have you read the old scriptment? Because the things that happen, and the style of action described (among many other things) bears little relation the final battle of TPM....

Were the glowing seeds, super tall trees, bio-luminescent plants and "chosen one" plot in the script?

Just curious?

plants (everything is at night) in the scriptment. Also the super tall trees. Certainly dont remember any glowing seeds, and there was no chosen one plot at all, quite the contrary, Jake does everything by choice and there are no phrophecies etc...It does nt seem like one has been added imho. What is described by those that saw the footage *spoilers warning** it seems like the planet Pandora communicating with Jake. Pandora is actually a giant living organism (Gaia style). And every living creature and plant is an extension of it. I think Cameron knows that the whole messianic "chosen one" thing is really played out now (matrix, harry potter etc..) That was one of the things I liked the most about the scriptment was that there was none of that, and Jake is not seen, nor presented, as any kind of religious/saviour figure.

It'll be interesting to see if there is a new take on "the chosen one" thing since as you said, it has been played out for a long time.

It might end up being on the lefty-preachy side, but I think this film is going to deliver big time. Cameron's no fool by any stretch. He's a certifiable bad ass and this will be a well thought out tight piece of science fiction.

I've read it. The scriptment has this whole Gaia mother-earth worship thing going on really strong. It's the only part of the story that kinda grated with me - just seemed so damn preachy. The rest of it though is awesome.

planet talks or is sentinent as such, its just one giant interconnected eco-system that is alive, not really all that different from actual nature here on earth, just more sci-fi imho..
and i disagree about it being preachy as I think

ita all in the execution guys. I recently re-watched the LOTR trilogy, and theres a very strong and obvious anti-industrial/anti-war and enviromental themes and messages in it. But it never comes across as preachy for a number of reasons. Imho I think Cameron will get his themes/message across in a similar fashion. Afterall look at T1 and T2, both have a very strong anti-nuclear war theme, and technophobe element, but its never to the disadvantage of either movie imho....
Reminds me of Final Fantasy VII.

With all of that "you're stealing the planet's life-force" bullshit. Whatever, man. Anyway, I'm familiar with the notion. I hear people talk all the time about how we are "killing the planet", to which I tell them to go fuck themselves. You can't kill that which isn't alive. Planets aren't alive, nobody is killing any planet, and that kind of hyperbole pisses me off. When I throw shit in the ocean, is it too hard to be HONEST with me and tell me that I might end up killing some birds? Fuckers have to exagerrate everything, and now I'm "killing the planet" every time I throw a cigarette butt out of my car window. And people can fuck right off with that shit, because that makes me almost want to dump oil into the sea just to spite the assholes. That whole "killing the planet" bullshit has ALWAYS pissed me off, because it's just infantile shock tactics. It's a lot like the abortion debate, where people "prove their point" by showing pictures of dead bloody fetuses. It's condescending stupid bullshit that assumes that everyone is a fucking idiot, and that you change change the minds of idiots with mere shock tactics. What, now I'm not just littering, I'm "KILLING THE PLANET"? That's fucking stupid, and fuck anyone who tries to pull that shit on me. If someone doesn't respect me enough to be HONEST with me and discuss issues as if I'm not a total idiot, then they can go fuck right off. "The planet is a living organism, and we are killing the planet." Whatever, man. Am I five fucking years old? Do you really think I'm gonna buy that shit? But on the other hand, I DID give Final Fantasy VII a pass. Sure, it was retarded and way too preachy, but at least it was fun and I got to walk around killing stuff. Avatar may end up being just as retarded and preachy, but I may end up giving it a pass too, if it fucks my eyeballs hard enough.

have a lot of the same feelings, but Avatar is just as much about about colonialism, exploring an alien world and the future of the human race as it is about any enviromental message. Then scriptment does nt not talk down to anyone. Again think LOTR...
