cuz that movie was bat-fucking-crazy genius (and had heart). I was less a fan of Howl's Moving Castle but it was visually interesting albeit muddled. Princess Mononoke was also good...and to be honest, I'm not even much of an animation fan but he does good work.
Finally!

Yay! I've been waiting for this trailer and this movie. DAMN IT! I'm at work and the company won't let me have QuickTime! That being said, I think Disney kind of blew it by not putting this trailer in front of "Up."

This movie is more akin to Totoro in tone. Its definately alot more of a kids film - but thats a good thing in this case because its just so appealing. The animation is Miyazaki's best aswell.
Man I cant wait for this!

Yea, voice cast is a little...strange, liam neeson sounds so out of place, but then so does pretty much every norn iron accent. This trailer leaves much to be desired though, it pretty much shows some random stuff and goes on about its creator, how about selling the film based on its own merits for a change? The japanese trailers at least had some magic to them, childish as they may have been at least they have a target audience, im not sure what disney is aiming their version at, it seems to be trying to grab an older crowd by keeping mum on any actual story and flouting the big names.
That looks great.

I've seen Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle and both were beautifully animated but seemed to forget the plot for 45 minutes at a time. How the hell is all this stuff leading to removing your curse? Did you forget to ask about it? Ohhh...it all wraps up in the last two minutes so it's OK.
Miyazaki's version of "Little Mermaid"

it's more kid oriented than "Spirited Away" but it looks very good (fishes/waves animation is very cool) and it's a charming interpretation of the little mermaid tale.

So the I don't have to suffer the fucking voice stunt-casting.

Yes, yes, I know it's a necessary compromise for the American kiddies market.

God forbid those little fuckers ever be expected to learn to read.

Found the trailer quite odd...

Don't know why... voice cast also seems mismatched... but anyway, it's Miyazaki, so I'm there!

It's beautiful, but that goes without saying for Miyazaki. Unfortunately the story is a little threadbare, and not unlike Howl's Moving Castle it fails to explain itself on numerous counts. It's clearly aimed at a younger audience than many of his movies, so this might explain why it's so simplistic. Still, it's the most stunning cartoon you'll see until Miyazaki's next one. There's a storm at sea that's the most incredible use of water in animation I've seen since Pinocchio.
I'm glad he back to his more rounded and simple...

...style of drawing. In HOWL he seemed to be experimenting with the more thin, spiky, angular anime style figure drawing...I liked it a lot less.

Not a fan of the aesthetics. Don't like exclamation points in most cases either, but I am occasionally guilty of that one.

link to the trailer somewhere? I try to keep my pc clear of all Apple software & drivers. Hated them.

I don't mind the stunt voice casting in movies like this, because it really is one of the only ways Disney can try to reach normal American audiences. Sometimes stunt marketing is required.

I saw this film ages ago. It's a cute movie, but I don't think this is the one that's going to break Studio Ghibli in North America. It's one of his lesser films. If they want to break out of the niche market, Disney should do a revival of Kiki's Delivery Service with a better translation.
Um... that trailer is kind of misrepresenting

the actual film. It's not an epic you're-the-chosen-one type of story at all. It's about a mischievous magical water creature that fucks things up in an endearing if incoherent way.

...if you're a fan of the complex Miyazaki dramas like Nausicaa, Mononoke, Spirited Away, or Howl's, this isn't the movie for you. Ponyo has MUCH more in common with Totoro. I really disliked Totoro, so I wasn't very pleased with Ponyo. I didn't find the children in this film cute; I found them exceedingly annoying, although not nearly as bad as the children in Laputa. SHEETAAAAAAAAA!

Like Totoro, Ponyo is a character study. A character study done on exceedingly vapid two year olds. Spare me.

Probably not as good as Spirited away, but I'll check it out anyway. More 'Kiki' & 'Totoro' than 'Mononoke' or 'Spirited Away'. Aimed at the kids.

...WHY THE FUCK NOT? This movie does not need to be "adapted" and re-written. Damn it, WHY do American movie studios always think they can "improve" on the original when they import non-American movies? Maybe one of the reasons for the success of this movies and other ones is the LACK of Hollywood clichés, did they ever think about that? And the celebrity voice cast... spare me. Yuck.
