I usually go to the convention every year for the last five years. They have been getting worse every year with guests, exclusives and vendors. I also got screwed over last year by a few things. Diamond sent me the wrong exclusive Heroes' Peter and claimed there was nothing I could do about it. Mick Foley, the reason I bought the ticket in the first place, canceled out at the last minute. So, last year pretty much sucked besides getting people to boo Dan Dido for not showing Dark Knight when they showed Batman Begins early for Philly when it came out. I decided to skip this year and go to Baltimore. Now, they finally put out some guest that I would like to see Anya, Troi and Tom Sorvino. It is also being rumored this is the last one, so that is why the have a ton of celebrity guests instead of comic book guys. They wanted to get more casual fans then the usual fanboys that show up for the event. I do hope its the last one, because I will probably go next year and it will suck.

I liked your line about not shitting on a book until you've actually read it. (I was the guy who asked about Doc Savage's hair which led to Didio talkking about the aesthetic that they were shooting for with the book...)

Did the crowds at WWPhilly look smaller to you this year than last?

Oh ya man I totally remember.

Yeah man, the crowd did seem smaller, but I'll tell you 76 was a fucking flooded nightmare, so I think that had something to do with it.

Also, I'm still holding to there is something wrong when neither DC nor Marvel have a presence on the main floor (yeah I know individual guys were there but still).

What a friggin' rip off. About half the tables as usual, the same friggin' guys, an almost total washout. I did manage to pick up a bunch of trades for cheap and some assorted gewgaws, but I could have got that stuff at one of those cons that doesn't cost 35 fucking dollars.

Much smaller crowds. Can't even blame HeroesCon in Charlotte. There is NO reason for Wizard Philly to be 3 days...content wise. Oh, and if your DC Comics & your main announcemnet is bringing back Doc Savage & newpaper comics; don't ask "why aren't kids reading?"

It seemed a lot less crowded this year. Certainly more than the NY Con but even by Philly standards it seemed small. While I would have liked a bigger company presence on the floor the lighter crowds did give us more of an opportunity to spend time talking to creators which is always nice. And Laser, 35 does seem pretty steep for the amount of things offered on the floor but I got my tickets at the last minute on Thursday and they were only 25 (and kids were free). There are deals to be had.

It'd be nice to see this Wizard con go the way of the dodo and something much more local and (ugh, the word) sustainable spring up in its place. Or at least one that's managed well enough not to schedule the same weekend as another con.

And btw, Douche, that took balls to say what you did to DiDio about Johns' sister at the DC Nation panel (everyone might well have been thinking it at any rate, but saying?). I wish I could've caught up with you after, if at least to say hi.
Why aren't kids reading comics?

It's simple:
• there are no easily accessible outlets
• the product is too expensive
• the vast majority of comics are written for 40-something males (take a look at the pics posted above for Wizard Con)

When some of your big cheeses are at a con like Didio and Bob Wayne were, you should have some sort of presence. It doesn't have to be the big set up used for SDCC/NYCC, but you should have something. Sheesh, I half expected to see Didio in Artists Alley set up between to Tom Derrenick and Rags Morales. And shame on Marvel, too, especially when they split up announcements between Philly and Charlotte.

I hit 76 at about 9:30, so I must have missed the bad conditions. (I guess that's the advantage of getting up at the crack of dawn and driving down form the Poconos.)

The Dark Wolverine preview seems to suggest in very broad strokes that "Barry" spent the night with Daken. Who then uses his pheromone powers on some random HAMMER chick. So I guess he's either bi or willing to do what it takes to further his agenda.

That was the part where someone yelled at you to "Shut up!" if I remember correctly (in addition to the boos). That was a really good panel moment though - it loosened everyone up following that.

And eh, I gave Johns a pass on it. Courtney was where he started in comics, and he rarely lets old school corny comics sentimentality into his writing. The story could've been a better bow on his tenure, but it was enjoyable for what it was.

It would've been nice to have DC and Marvel booths, anything to encourage new people to read their books. But, imo, DC is half-wise for not having much of a presence, particularly with the economy pretense: it seems like something of a snub to Wizard, which isn't unreasonable. But Marvel's a bit more inexplicable, the way they're milking their cash-cow $3.99 books and are tied at the hip with Wizard. Something's up though, the freebie comic for the show was Black Terror from Project Superpowers instead of some Marvel book with a variant pencil sketch cover. I wonder how WW Chicago will pan out?

Where the hell did he get his Sex Stank ability from? Was his mom a mutie too or some shit? I don't really give a shit about this thing--the whole concept is lame as shit, and somebody needs to tell editorial how to spell Dokken--but that whole "pheromones to control Peter Parker" thing in SPIDER-MAN the other day had me scratching my head, and now I hear Logan Jr. is an AC/DC? Like I said, I know fuck-all about this guy. Was he genetically engineered by bad guys using Logan's DNA? Did Logan ball that mutant hooker X Stacy/Stacy X, since she has the same pheromone-based power? Doesn't it seem odd that A.) a mutant would have the same powers as his parent but B.) have some other random power too? Has anybody in the Marvel U ever tried to make sense out of why Scott Summers' future daughter apparently has the ability of both her parents, even though the parents' abilities occurred randomly due to genetic mutation? Wouldn't mutant parents either have normal kids or kids who manifested their own quirks? And shouldn't that kinda thing be decided, so the writers and readers know how it works across the board?

Have You Noticed That Marvel's Best Mutants..

are always a little strange? Either strange looking or they have a power that is an exaggeration of "real" human phenomenon. Certainly, the original X-Men were generally freaky, with wings and monkey feet and turning to ice, etc. Wolverine was always freaky because of the way Cockrum first drew him unmasked, the claws and the power. Wolverine was around for years before his power was defined. We never heard about the healing factor until we approached the end of Byrne's run. The Beast had a healing factor in his AMAZING ADVENTURES series that was forgotten as soon as he joined the Avengers, but as kids, we always wondered what exactly made Wolverine a mutant. I always liked the freakier mutants myself, anyway. Kirby, Steranko, Adams and Sienwicz (Sippowicz? Sciencewhiz?) drew the freak factor well. Cockrum had a great style and was a brilliant designer but his X-Men were too straight up superhero for my tastes. And Byrne couldn't draw freak for a million bucks.

For me, the best X-Men were always a cross between regular Justice League heroes and the freaks of Katherine Dunne's GEEK LOVE and Theodore Sturgeon's MORE THAN HUMAN.

Didio was doing the rounds asking who liked the JSA run. I raised my hand.

Seeing as I'm 6' 6" with bushy blonde hair I stand out like a lighthouse of douchiness. He asked, you what did you like.

I know some of my @$$holes won't answer my calls becasue of this answer, but I'm OK with Kingdom Come becoming part of canon and when Gog wasn't fucking walking I enjoyed the series.

So I said I like it all except the end, I appreciate it was an homage to his sister, but it was a lackluster finish compared to the rest of the series.

As I was about to spout off that we should hate issues about Birthday parties as much as softball games, someone yelled SHUT UP from across the room and a few booos came my way.

Dan was very cool and said we respect all opinions, which was when I mentioned I was from AICN and fan hatred is just part of weekly existence. Sales guy then said you should see our mailbox.

I couldn't really understand Dan's reply to my feelings, he's a fast talker and the mics at the convention are really tin cans using twine to network together.
