Didn't much like Undead, but if they've taken the time to write something comprehensible I'm sure this will be better.

and then i turned the dvd off when everyone was just floating in the air. This sounds cool, but my god undead was such a let down.

On the other hand, casting Sam Neill, Willem Defoe, and Ethan Hawke is intriguing enough for me to give this a further looksie.

I was expecting awesome and instead I got lameness, pretty the only really interesting thing about was the alien angle (but that was really just weird) oh and the score sounded like something from a kid's movie

I just can't see people dropping the cash to see yet another plague x turns the population into x.

I guess it is a genre, this whole zombie/vampire/crazy person virus thing... but it just seems so derivative and boring to me... "I know! Being a Zombie is actually a virus!! A virus going mad!!! No wait wait... even better, a VAMPIRE VIRUS!!"

Unless this is seriously good, or has an interesting angle...

No. Shawn of the dead was impressive. Undead was pretentious, badly directed and over loaded with a god-awful midi score.

but as i said to them during production and screening (yes im a local) kudos for getting undead up and going.

i wish them luck with this one

So as long as a movie LOOKS like it COULD be a high budget mainstream flick it is instantly a modern cult classic? Is this what we've come to? Undead was weird. A bunch of characters I couldn't give a shit about, the token female badass, and a bizarre alien plot inserted to explain away everything made it weird to the point of nearly shutting it off. The worst part is that it's not quite "so bad it's good"...it's just bad. Because they obviously tried really hard. I'm not shitting on this one yet. But if Undead is any indication it will have inexplicably badass characters with incredible skills with guns, loads of gore, lame one-liners, and...wait that sounds like I'm describing the last couple of Resident Evil movies. Fuck it.

Don't ever watch Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, which is absolutely fucking terrible, yet I've seen it praised here and there. I saw Undead as a modern take on Bad Taste but with much better acting and effects. I'd love to see an Undead hater defend Bad Taste in this talkback.

Nothing. I know I saw it, but I swear I cannot remember one damn thing about it. If it was good, I'd remember. If it was bad, I'd certainly remember that. But nada. Zip. Must of been a real earth-shaker, that one.
Undead tried too hard

I wanted to like it, but from the very first moment, it felt like they were going for a Peter Jackson/Dead Alive feel and just ended up being derivative. As has been said many times on this site, it's difficult to get the horror/comedy balance just right, and throughout most of Undead, I thought it really leaned towards "desperate to be cool and trying too hard". I think the only time I actually chuckled was the line, "I'm comfortable with my body." There *was* some technical prowess on display and I at least got the sense that the brothers have a great deal of love for sci-fi, horror, and comedy. Hopefully their second attempt is better (although it sounds like they may leave the comedy out of this one).

Ok. So... what I like about Bad Taste is that it's a Super-no budget film, but I've never seen it passed off as anything but. When I watch it, it's like watching something my buddies made, running around with a camera in their backyards on weekends, because that's pretty much what it is. I wouldn't call it a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a place in my heart because there are enough bizarre, goofy moments to keep me watching and also because I know a lot of people who have made "first films" exactly like it. I suppose Undead is spiritually the same, but it was promoted as a "real" movie, distributed by Lions Gate with posters, theatrical run, and DVD release (that even compared it to Dead Alive, by the way). With that level of promotion, I have higher expectations and I suppose they just weren't met.

I remember it got a lot of mixed to low reviews, but I finally watched it and liked it. It gave me a EVIL DEAD 2 or DEAD ALIVE (BRAIN DEAD) feel, although not as great as those movies. Of course kids these days, raised on A.D.D. remakes, probably were bored to tears.

I rarely let the marketing/promotion affect my opinion of a film because, as far as I'm aware, it's usually out of the filmmakers' hands. I like Bad Taste (and Dead Alive) too, I just think it's unfair to slag Undead when it was made in a similar spirit.

@TheExterminator: I remember the score in Undead being shit, but was Bad Taste really a much better film? I'll have to watch them both again, but if I didn't already know the story behind Bad Taste before I watched it, I doubt I would have lasted through the first few minutes. Undead had some cool effects and offbeat characters with a weird little story.

but its obvious most people here have no idea what a complete film production wasteland (Queensland, Australia) Undead came out of. These guys made a professional looking film out of zero fucking budget....yeh it sucked (particularly the score..) and the end was retarded on a level that immediately loses you...but still. They worked extremely hard, I'll give em that...agree with BenderShiny

I think most people forget Undead was a self funded $800,000 gamble. It's fun and the effort shows, I have nothing but huge admiration for these guys. I was talking to guy from Weta a while back who worked on some effects, said it was looking cool. But that was like a year ago, or two.

Main problems with Undead

Despite the enormous effort that obviously went into even getting it made which is to respected in the horror show that is the Australian film industry, the film in the end was in my mind a failure.

The script wasn't very funny, the music was beyond terrible and worst of all for me was the pacing. The editing was just awkward and made the movie feel like it was barely moving at all. Combined with some pretty made-for-TV lighting, it made for a visually unengaging story about a zombie/alien attack.

What sets "Bad Taste" apart; It was well-paced and the jokes it had, whilst stupid, worked. I never checked the time when I was watching it and was left to enjoy the utter outrageousness of the violence on screen.

I realise the brothers had very little money and had to use CGI a lot, but the use of computer graphics immediately dated their picture, distanced me from really seeing any of the gore as anything but an effect. Moreover, their obvious efforts to make a slick looking movie was at odds with the "crazy movie matinee" feeling they were going for.

Jackson's all practical effects bonanza gave his movie a grubby homemade aesthetic that was both viscerally involving and just plain silly fun. He never made it look particularly pretty and that was the right choice for such an empty-headed juvenile film (that still kicks ass).

Before "Undead"'s defenders bring out that defence again, watch "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" for awful done right. They realised the only way to make it work was to try and do EVERYTHING terribly. The lighting, the set design, the framing, the acting, the editing, the sound, the music, the story; it's a goldmine of awfulness. Very rewarding for any film nerd to watch as you see countless errors that must have been really hard to consistently commit.

RR's "Planet Terror" is another good example, but in that case everything was done with an eye towards quality except the ridiculous script. The effects were top notch (mostly practical!), the lighting was great, the camera-work and editing (except for the obvious exception) was fine. Nothing was out of place, which made enjoying the insane story far easier.

except for the obvious exception?
