QT has made, undeniably 2, possibly 3 or 4 for some people, films that will live on in the annals of film for all time as great, great works. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction alone guarantee his place in history as a person who created some great films, and that is 2 more than any one of us will most likely ever even come close to being able to say. We will all be lucky if our grandkids remember we existed 50 years after our deaths. Tarantino will go live on in people like us for generations. So who the fuck are all of you to talk all this shit? Jealous fuckers, if you ask me. Reservoir Dogs alone guarantees my purchase of a ticket to every movie this man makes, whether I'm excited about it or not. His presence as a director has given me numerous hours of film much more enjoyable than the average film I see in any given week. Every single of you enjoyed Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Kill Bill a hell of a lot more than fucking Wolverine or Spiderman, or Terminator or Watchmen or just about fucking anything. Anyone who denies that can take a dirt nap because you are just too bitter to admit you don't have an ounce of talent or taste.

...that most once 'great' directors eventually fade away. It is only the very few, like the Spielbergs and the Scorseses that stay relevant, and most importantly, productive, decade after decade. Even Spielberg and Scorsese fell from view or relevancy for a good part of the 1980's to mid-1990's.

Think of all the great directors from the 1970's whose productivity and/or fame and relevancy faded away. Same with Tarantino and arguable Rodriguez (though Sin City was a mini-comeback for him). These two cats arose during a time in the '90's when out of the box indie movies were getting attention. I think what did them in was their resultant fame (it's tough to live under the spotlight as a creative person) and the flood of crappy indie movies that aped their stuff.

The huge directors of today: Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, Guillermo Del Toro, Cuaron and Snyder will likely fade away as well---unless they can stay productive and relevant.

And let's put to bed...

Rodriguez
by Gwai Lo
Jun 21st, 2009
01:12:57 PM
I don't think Rodriguez was ever on Tarantino's creative level. He just drew a lot of talent by association from the guy. It helped that he made El Mariachi for $7000, and that Desperado seemed like he was charting a similar course to Tarantino's one two punch of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Then they made Four Rooms and From Dusk Till Dawn. Nevermind that Tarantino's contributions to both of these films were much better than Rodriguez's. After that, though? Different story. The Faculty could have been directed by any number of 90s studio filmmakers, it didn't even try to hide the fact that it was Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Class of Kevin Williamson. The Spy Kids series, Shark Boy and Lava Girl, whatever that latest one is called: stricken from the record for being kiddie shit. Once Upon a Time in Mexico was a mess. Which leaves us with Sin City and Grindhouse, again both Tarantino collaborations. I give him credit for making Sin City as it was meant to be made, but it seems like his role was mostly technical where Frank Miller was supplying most of the decades old creative juice. Planet Terror was fun, but no one is calling it anything more than goofy entertainment. He's got an upcoming slate that's longer than his existing CV but seems too ADD and enabled by his garage studio to sit down and do one thing properly. Anyhow...

Tarantino at least seems to care what films get his director stamp on them. In my mind, Death Proof is his only real questionable (as in not certifiably great) solo movie so far and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt until I can at least see IB and form a proper opinion on it.

Rodriguez is the better production manager, maybe. Depends on what you think a director is supposed to do. On one hand there's the "running the show" aspect, which Rodriguez seems to be good at. This involves coordinating all aspects of the production, people skills, getting the bugger made. The more important part to me, and the part that seems to separate the production managers from the auteurs, is the part that has to do with creative responsibility. The director calls every shot that appears on screen. If he thinks he has the goods, he's taking responsibility for whatever praise or criticism is to come. The director's job is to make a large crew of people doing drastically different things create something of artistic value. And when the images are captured and arranged in a method that tells a story, the director is taking the final creative responsibility for the product. "Directed by" means "Hello, my name is ____________ and I am giving you my personal stamp of approval that my movie is good."
This film needs one thing and one thing only.

Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards may be a decent movie, but comparing them to past WWII 'mission movies', The Guns of Navarone and The Dirty Dozen will remain classics after Bastards is long forgotten.

Pitt may come off fine in this flick, but there's no comparison between Pitt and Eli Roth vs. Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn.

I know that Tarantino is way talented, which annoys me that he keeps making homage, tongue in cheek movies. I'd be first in line at a theater if he directed, say, a straight ahead genre epic without the '70's drive-thru movie influences.

There is a point..

...because you can create modern classics. Case in point: Saving Private Ryan is in the same pantheon as Guns of Navarone. It also proved that Spielberg despite his years in the movie business is still innovative. The opening beach landing sequence was amazing and has since been copied by countless filmmakers, right down to the film stock and exposure.

Wowy...peeps haven't even seen this on yet & theyv'e already marooned her to the bottom of the ocean flo! Hillarious. Atleast good ole' Brad Pitt's got faith in the man. Now, while I am & always will be a huge fan of Tarantino, from start to finish of his career, his style keeps adjusting & for better or worse it throws his critics & his fans into an uproar from time to time. No matter how you see it...he is working on improving. The man is four or five films into his career & he's already had 3 hits. Personally...Jackie Brown did it for me the most…thing is…I’m not really sure what people want or expect from QT. If you’ll watch QT’s flix for what they are (cerebral one on one character battles/dialogue fests) instead of what you want them to be (action heavy blockbusters w/boatloads of gratuitous violence & wot not) you might not have such harsh thoughts & opinions on his body of work. That being said…everyone is entitled to an opinon but in the end, like him or not, the man is talented & has & will produce flix of cinematic importance. No one can honestly say that Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1 & 2, & even Jackie Brown weren’t full of amazing character interaction & depth. I even dug on his little director's bit in Sin City. Now...whether or not Inglorious Basterds lives up to the previous war flix...that's all up to the critics...but I can't see myself not liking this one. We shall see.

to the acclaim. Both are quite exaggerated.

For me, Tarantino has proven his worth with RESERVOIR DOGS and JACKIE BROWN. I even like, though to a much lesser extent, the stylistic gimcrack cleverness of PULP FICTION and KILL BILL VOL. 1. But, of course, VOL. 2 and DEATH PROOF insulted my intelligence.

It comes down to IB's weak advance word-of-mouth, its cast - particularly Pitt, who has ruined anything he's in with the exception of SEVEN, and story, which holds no interest for me.

Still, to come on here and suggest Snyder or Rodriguez are better directors would be akin to idiocy.

Is his lack of productivity.

When he first came out he seemed like a Script Machine. Two he directed himself (2 & 1/2 if you count Four Rooms), and three directed by other people.

Then he adapts an Elmore Leonard novel.

Then we have a SIX YEAR wait until Kill Bill Vol 1.

And another 3 years between Vol 2 and Grindhouse.

By taking so long between projects he makes every film he does seem like a MAJOR EVENT, and some of them simply aren't going to be able to live up to that.

It's not just that people in his age group like Rodriguez and Kevin Smith have been more productive than he has.

EVERYONE has been more productive than he has.

Scorsese,Spielbe rg,the Coen Brothers, Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Ridley Scott etc. etc. Those guys are ALWAYS making movies. Some of them are great. Some of them are good. Some of them are mediocre. But they keep cranking them out. That's what a director is supposed to do.

I hope this is a good movie. It doesn't look like it's going to be a great one. And if it's as mediocre as Death Proof, he will have given us two half assed movies in a row and taken FIVE YEARS to do it.

Made 3 movies in the last 20 years of his life. I don't think that's Tarantino's problem. I think he needs to lay of the weed just a little. Death Proof was not so great, but the others before were all stellar IMO. Jackie Brown by far the best. Anyone who's seen that and Pulp Fiction and thinks the man has no talent should just wait for Transformers 2.

is shocking to viewers partly because A) it was perpetrated upon white people. We're not used to seeing that. And B) it was in 1930's Germany. It's one thing to see Native Americans massacred in the lawless confines of the newly settled west. It's quite another to see systematic genocide in what was supposed to be a civilized society.

I'd actually prefer directors who only did a movie every three or four years and knock it out of the park every time to the Scott/Spielberg/Spderbergh approach of shooting a new movie every three months and having MAYBE a third of them be really good and the rest ranging from okay to terrible. Yeah, I wish we had more QT movies to enjoy, but he hasn't made a movie I've disliked to date (yes, Death Proof was awesome too), so he can take as long as he fucking wants between projects (as long as it's not TWELVE FUCKING YEARS like Jimmy Cameron)

Good Points. But I still say it's early for him. He's only made what, like five films. Most of Scorsese's early films were similar in a lot of ways. As I said before, if he can put the bong down for awhile, I think he has potential for a Scorsese type career. Although he seems to be stuck in all this 70's B-movie homage stuff. Death Proof was not a great leap in the right direction.

The problem with the "Hit One Out of the Park Every 3 to 4 Years Plan" is: What if he BUNTS?

I want more films from filmmakers I like, not less. He's directed 7 films in 17 years, and that's if you count Kill Bill twice, and we all know that's just one long movie. So let's say Six.

Scorsese has also given us 7 feature films in the same 17 years. (1992-2008). If you throw in the documentaries and concert films from the same period his number goes up to a dozen or more.

The Coen Brothers have done nine. Robert Altman also did nine and almost that many things for TV. Robert Rodriguez has done 10. Ridley Scott has done 11. Spike Lee has done 11 and numerous docs for TV. Spielberg has an even dozen to Tarantino's six.

And the Champ? Woody Allen has made SEVENTEEN films in the past 17 years. Are all of them masterpieces? Of course not. But a nice mix of comedies and dramas, three period pieces and a musical is nothing to sneeze at. He didn't make us wait 6 years for any of them. And he has yet to make a film about a guy who kills women with his car.

It's amazing how prolific you can be when your art is more important to you than groupies and drugs.

See, I like this film. But- I'm not blind to it's flaws. To begin with, the very fact that it's wholesale ripped off from City of Fire automatically diminishes it.

Whoever said that it had a different impact in the early 90's is spot on- because it got banned, which, in hindsight, was the best thing that ever happened to it and QT.

...about this guy who is an obsessive movie fan who works in a video store. One day he gets it in his head to start writing his own scripts slyly ripping off great obscure movies that most other people haven't seen. He gets lucky and gets to make his own movie where he again slyly rips off other great obscure movies. He's suddenly lauded as an outsider boy genius wunderkind whereupon he makes his greatest film and wins the Hairy Palm Du Jour at SoupCannes France, now audiences are catching on to his secret stealing but buy into his take that they are 'homages' because it is the fin de siecle and recombinant nostalgiac art has become hip because the current zeitgeist is that we're all gonna die in a Y2K tragedy and gee, aint it fun to reference all of humanities prior achievemants. Act 2- The young guy ain't so young anymore, whereas he was once the hungry outsider, he's now THE ultimate insider and loses himself in coke, booze and self-importance. He wakes up six years later to make DESTROY ROY vol. 1 and 2 where he resurrects the career of MichaelDavidHutchenceCarradine and shows that he has honed his regurgitave style to the point of effortless emptiness. Flashy and successful but something is now missing. Act 3 The once wunderkind is now a sad, aging, bloated shell of exhausted hubris. His talent and vision have left him, all the self-referencing having spiralled inward to it's obvious inevitable conclusion of having finally eaten itself as in now passe'. With movies like MORTALITY IMPOSSIBLE, a B-Movie car ego fueled disaster, and GLORYHOLEUS RETARDS, a revenge movie set at the gay special olympics starring Drab Shitt, the once champion of geekdom has lost all of his fan love, lost his mind, and lost his soul. Hollywood accepts him as another permanent residence of the Hotel California but has moved on to the next hot young thang. Ending shot is the protagonist in his final Elvis in Las Vegas phase, weighing 400 lbs. directing Eddie Murphy movies til his inevitable death all alone by pill fueled cardiac arrest in his Vegas mansion masturbating to porno mags on the crapper. Fade to black.

Rodriguez is a good editor and special effects supervisor (getting it done with bubble gum and strings) Tarrantino is a good writer of scenes, he's a great second pass author who can enrich dialogue once someone who is a good storyteller lays down the foundation of a solid (non fragmented/episodic) narrative. Tarrantino is a also a good director of acting (especially intense over the top scenes). He's also a great musical director (picking great temp music, songs, moods, etc).

My complaint is he takes too long to make them.

I've seen nothing on Inglorious Basterds that explains why he had to sweat over this script for so many years. It's not like he had to do research. This will be a cartoon that has nothing to do with WWII or actual history. He's been writing it since before KILL BILL and DEATH PROOF.

If it turns out to be the greatest thing he's ever written I'll be the first one to say so. Everything I've seen so far just makes it look violent and silly for no apparent reason.

I liked the "Basterds" footage, though. Scary and brutal, yet funny at the same time. Not an easy combination to pull off. I'm thinking of Tarantino's latest as an alt-history WWII story, in the same vein as an S.M. Stirling, Harry Turtledove, or H.G Wells novel, but a little slicker and bloodier.

I think it could be pretty damn good.

Oh my fuck

Despite Brad Pitt's bad accent (and it's bad), I'm still optimistic about this one almost strictly based on the subject matter, which I find really cool (especially the altered reality bit). But take a close look at what we can see of Robert Richardson's work so far. In those two minutes, we can almost go ahead and confirm that the movie will deliver visually.

It really is good. With little of the "Hey look at me! I'm clever!" Tarantino trademarks.
Aw, DuhVarth, we hardly knew ye.

Usually, after bashing Tarantino, Burton, Lucas, or whoever, we all get together for cupcakes and jerk off to Christopher Nolan's "genius."

You're gonna miss all that.

You know what this movie needs? WWII ROBOTS!!!

I'll tell you why I think the "Basterds" film title is misspelled. Dyslexic Quentin typed it that way. Weinstein (or someone) corrected him. Quentin threw a hissy fit, & said "I'm QT, and whatever I type is gospel!" So ... typo now replicated on posters & press releases, now & forever ... Am I right, Quentin?
