When I saw The Village for the first time, it made me furious, because it was such a tease. But in retrospect I realized that what it lacked in scare tactics, it made up for with brilliant cinematography, and unique characters and pacing. As far as I'm concerned every movie he's made is dead on. How can people dismiss the man who made Unbreakable? You all need to get over yourselves.

Even thought "The Happening" was ATROCIOUS, Shyamalan brought us three really good movies, and one that was passable. Sixth Sense had all of us excited when it came out. It was a great film. Unbreakable was even better, and Signs, tho weaker and sometimes a bit sill, was solid as well. (Tell me you didn't jump when the alien came out during the birthday party, if not you're either dead or lying.) The Village was still good, and if it had come out under another director as the same product,would have been praised as a nice little low-budget film. Yes, it would have been better as an episode of an anthology horror series (and I think it actually was...), but it wasn't horrible by any means. Lady in the Water was better than any of you fucks give it credit for. A fun little modern day fairy tale, it make me smile every time I watch it, even now. The Happening was shit. I know, you know. But with everything else the guy has done, I'm pretty sure he doesn't deserve the over the top (and sometimes racist, wtf is up with that?) flogging he gets here regularly.

I'm not comparing the quality of the three, but the arts are no stranger to ego, and I don't see how it really relates back to a body of work. Putting your name at the beginning of one of your films is not a new concept. Beethoven's Fifth was written by a fuckin' asshole, but it still sounds good, even if it was based on the popular NBC series "The Fifth" of the era.

His performance in Lady In The Water was as believable as anyone's, I actually thought he did a great job. I didn't make the Del Toro comment to compare the quality of Lady with Pan's, they're not really anything alike, although Hellboy 2 was definitely far worse and more vaudevillian than anything M. I was expecting "Adrian" (What Kyle calls himself after being turned into a monster) to look more like Cocteau's lion-looking version. That's also how the author imagined him, too. (And glad Kendra's a beautiful blonde goth girl instead of the overweight one she was in the book. I am so tired of that stereotype...)

i just wrote a longer post but lost my connection so i will paraphrase. m night makes things look pretty but sucks with actors and dialog. hopefully due to the nature of this movie (big special effects movie that he didn't write) he wont fuck himself over like he has in his last couple of movies.

What a asshole! This guy makes ORIGINAL MOVIES and takes chances-BIG chances. Sometimes he hits, and sometimes he misses. HOW DARE HE NOT HIT THE MARK EVERY TIME! I dont get this with Bay, or Sommers, or any other re-make coming out. I dont want ANY surprises-they hurt my brain. I need fast-food type movies written and directed for 3rd graders. THE HAPPENING would have had a decent opening if it was marketed as "a Mark Wahlberg disaster movie," as opposed to the WELL WORN AND IDIOTIC "He gave you the sense. He showed you the signs" b.s. M. Night's name was Mudd, so they base the entire campaign around...his name? Not saying The Happening wasn't an awful movie (it was) but here they need to do like they did with Woody Allen on Match Point -- put his name only in the credits at the end where only the intelligent people who care will find it. Let the FILM find its audience. Then, and only then, can M. Night overcome all the burned bridges and score his redemption in the eyes of the public and critics. I'm out.

"Lady In The Water" and "The Happening" may not have lived up to his previous films narrative but the direction was still ridiculously good. I think he's only grown as a director over the years and him taking a step back from the writing and focusing on the visuals is definitely a good choice in my opinion.
