Are you guys not posting Transformers reviews?

The movie came out in Europe today so I'm sure you must be getting reviews in. I sent one to Harry 6 hours ago and I'm guessing that a few more sent some in as well but so far there's nothing gone up.

I'm just wondering if there's an embargo on posting any reviews until the US release or if you are simply waiting until you get a few more in.

We just got in our first contributor review, from Latauro in Australia. That'll post tonight. We got some reader reviews, but honestly most of the reviews were links to people's personal blogs and stuff, which we don't really link to for reviews of movies a week or so out. The AICN crew see the movie very soon, so we'll be hitting with our opinions very soon.

I've defended strongly by love of House of 1,000 Corpses, and I'm also a Devils Rejects fan despite my preference of his first film...but his Halloween really would have been better as its own movie. Referencing the Myers named disrupted my mythos. It was like seeing Vader as a little kid all over again. That said, I'll see this one...and I have to agree...the crazier and more bizarre the better.

I really hope that they remake Halloween III: Season of the Witch after this one. Now that people have finally gotten over it being the Myersless sequel, and accepted it for the pure awesome that it is. Zombie can even direct, it's better suited to his sensibilities than Myers is. Also Tom Atkins needs to reprise his role. His sexual liason with a twentysomething hottie will be even creepier this time around.

Rob Zombie breathed some much needed fresh air into a character on life support. The same can be said about Nolan's Batman And JJ's Star Trek, They were both excellent Re-boots but done differently from what was laid out before them. ,

I watched it a few times and walked away from it feeling indifferent but then I had to be honest about it, Rob did a damn good job, It was disturbing at times and fucked up others, but the one thing it wasn't was boring, looking forward to how Zombies' H2 finishes.

I agree with some of what you're saying, but I think the three examples you cited as successful remakes were more readily reworkable than Halloween. Not only were the originals pretty old and dated, they weren't burdened with the same type of iconography that Halloween was/is. Carrot man from Thing From Another World wasn't THE singular vision of the monster from Who Goes There, there was room to tell the story in a way that was closer to the source. With Halloween, Carpenter's original WAS the singular vision. There was no room to improve, anywhere in the material. There was no theme that could have been better explored or adapted to a new director's sensibilities, a la The Fly. There wasn't an absence of style there for a master craftsman to exploit, a la Scarface. Halloween is not dated at all, it still holds up just fine. All Zombie did was bring a hillbilly flavor and that whole modern grime aesthetic. Oh, and humanity to Myers, which most people agree was just kind of out of place. I agree with the general sentiment that there are enough movie killers out there with mommy issues and histories of abuse, it's not fresh or exciting to see a Great White Shark like Myers explained with a shopworn backstory. He doesn't need the audience to empathize with him. I liked it when Zombie made us empathize with the Devil's Rejects, but with Myers it just felt like a device. I still think he has chops as a filmmaker (anyone who doubts this should at least watch the Making Of documentary on the Devil's Rejects DVD) but he's already straying into self parody and he's only on his fourth feature. Still crossing my fingers that I like this movie, but things look grim...
I WAS AN EXTRA FOR THIS MOVIE; H2
by Underoos Hero
Jun 19th, 2009
08:19:01 PM
I was part of the scene in H2 called the "Haddonfield's 4th Annual Phantom Jam." There were 200 of us there dressed in Halloween costumes as Haddonfield residents. The filming took place in Covington Georgia inside of an old feed warehouse that was converted into a very large, very cool bar and club complete with giant paintings of devils and massive props. We were to pretend as though we were digging the band that was performing on stage called Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures. I stood behind RZ at around 1:30 in the morning and watched him direct a few scenes involving one of the main actress' dressed as the main dude from the Rocky Horror picture show. I got to meet Tyler Mane and talk to some of the FX crew. The two days that were there were awesome. I can tell you that the movie is going to be very fucking trippy and very odd. We were also part of a sequence in the club where the lead actress Scout Talyor was hallucinating or drunk on something and saw images of a young Michael and Adult michael coming for her ass. So yes we got to meet the little kid playing the new child Myers. I have two days worth of stories to tell really. Some may be considered spoilers. I have to run but if you guys are interested I'll post more of what I saw.
I'm just glad they didn't do another shitty sequel....

The one thing that was amazing about the original was that there was no blood in the entire movie and it is probably the greatest slasher film ever.

I like that Zombie went away from making a complete frame by frame remake (Psycho) and created his own genre. At least For the first 45 minutes or so, I had no idea what the hell was going to happen next and (To me) because of that it was very effective.

Think about it, we could've easily gotten Halloween X or some other bullshit with a rapper in it. Instead they brought along somebody who tried something different.

Wasn't talking about "Corpses" or "Rejects" and without delving into the + and - of each films merits, he at least deserves credit for some originality.

Not so for his fucking ass raping of Halloween and Michael Myers.

Sure, the original, while not an "untouchable" work of cinematic art, was never the less an iconic moment in American horror movie history, and deserved better than the hackneyed stupidity Zombie foisted upon it's name.

if he took the first half and took it to the end as an original story. I thought it was pretty effective until it became the Halloween remake. After he killed Bubba Brownlee at the truck stop the movie turned to shit. If it had just been the story of a young killer in the making not named Michael Meyers it could have been good. Devil's Rejects is a great recent horror flick though, the guy has potential.

Which surprised me as I love the original, but by the time I caught it on cable last week, my expectations could not have been lower. 1000 Corpses is a shameless but fun exploitation flick, and I loved Rejects, maybe the best American horror film of the 00s. Halloween suffered by working over the white trash ground Zombie loves to travel, which is always the danger of a fan making a remake or sequel - they make what THEY liked (or imagined) about the source, rather than being able to step back and see what EVERYONE appreciated (see also Superman Returns). However, by using the Halloween framework - Loomis, the mask, the music- I think it elevated what Zombie might have done on his own. Now that we are officially moving off of sacred ground and into new territory, I'm curious to see what he can deliver.

Or is this going to be genius. Personaly, I liked some of the remake (I liked the grudgy look and we got to see Danille Harris's boobies!), but it was't a patch on the brilliant Carpenter classic. However, for the sequel, it looks like Rob Zombie has come up with something totally fucking insane! Michael is back from the dead and is being haunted by visions of his dead mommy who is telling him to kill his baby sister so they can all go to hell together! How fucked up is that! This movie looks like its actually set on Halloween night - unlike the first one, and being a bit fan of the Halloween season, I'm looking forward to this movie, but not as much as I am 'Trick R Treat' which comes out on Blu Ray in October!!! 4 more months to Halloween, Halloween, 4 more months to Halloween, Silver Shamone Rock!!!

...Pratt Institute. Must have been before I was there, though because I don't remember any hulking dreadlocked dudes with chunky mud smeared all over them who were way too enamored of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. ( We did have a guy named Gus who got kicked out of the dorm and squatted in an abandoned warehouse a few blocks away and who, because of a lack of proper bathroom facilities and running water, developed a crust of dirt and sweat and hence became darker and smellier as the semester progressed.) Ah, college!

He didn't remake the first one, he just took a copy of the disk outside, dropped his pants, took a shit on it,then tried to sell it to the public and his "Vision." What a joke. This douchebag has as much vision and creativity as my dog. This will be by far the worst movie of the year and probably even worse than the abortion that is "Rob Zombie's Halloween." Guy goes from making crap music to crap movies to crap remakes. What's next Rob? You going to start painting? Your art will probably resemble what my 3 year old makes or what I leave in the toilet every morning. Fuck off.
Zombie's Halloween was better than the original!

I am a HUGE fan of Carpenter's work. The Thing is one of my favorite films of all time. I love most of his filmography. BUT... That said I think Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13 is considerably better than the first Halloween. The original Halloween just wasn't scary to me. It had some atrocious acting and very slow pacing. Some of it is downright cheesy and not in a good way. I respect the influence it has had on the horror genre but it most certainly isn't Carpenter's best which I would rank in this order: The Thing, Assault On Precinct 13, Big Trouble In Little China, They Live, Escape From New York and In The Mouth Of Madness. I like The Fog and a few others I'm probably forgetting. But Halloween just didn't cut it for me. It ain't no Texas Chainsaw. Hooper knocked that early horror masterpiece out of the park. Zombie's Halloween was extremely entertaining. He had better pacing, Brad Dourif and Malcom fucking McDowell as Loomis. And Sheri Moon is not only hot but an underrated actress. So all the Zombie haters need to shut the fuck up. I bet the sequel is going to be great!

at least one of the things.... Myers isn't a huge hulk. He's a normally set guy. And as far as I'm concerned, that makes him scarier than him being played by some big wrestler. Getting this wrong makes it impossible to nail anything else in the film.

Meyers in the original Halloween is a very big guy. He's in fact the biggest guy in all the movie. Jamie Lee Curtis is a very tall woman, 5'9 tall, and Meyer's outheights her by more then one head. He is, by far, the tallest and bulkiest of all the people in Halloween. I think the idea was always that Meyers is a bit of a giant, even in Carpenter's movie, and they got the tallest person they could get to portait him as The Shadow.

Terrible Idea!

Seriously, Micheal Meyers doesn't need a backstory. It's only cool BECAUSE he's a normal kid with a normal family. Change that and you ruin everything. Oops, Rob Zombie already did that.

Amen.

The funny thing is, even tho I didn't really like his earlier efforts, I always thought, "Give this guy an existing franchise and he'll knock it out of the park." Good God was I wrong. Maybe he should've gotten the F13 remake, since he's obviously got mother issues.

My opinion on Zombie's Halloween

I think the first and second part of the movie really works. Everythign that's to do with Meyers as a kid,a nd his time in the mental isntitution still as a kid, i think they worked very well. that scene when little Meyer attacks the bully with a branch and beats him to death is one of the most harsh and brutal scene made for any recent horror movie. And zombie shows a pretty good comand of the camera and editing in this early scenes.

The movie fails when it retreads the same stuff that was in Carpenter's movie. That's when the movie fails. It's all rushed out. Lots of stuff happen just too fast. If i had to pinpoint when the movie starts to fail, it's after Meyers escapes. After that, it's banalville, it's been there, done that. The only nice though was that they let the Loomis girl live in the remake, but she is so battered up, so stabbed, so left as a mess, it's intense. It's a nice harsh touch, but everythign that surrounds it doesn't match up. Well, the very fast dispatching of Laurie's parents was unexpected!

Laurie, ye,s this is where zombie's remake gets it most wrong. in the origjnal we had a very interesting character of Laurie played by the very charismatic and unique Jaime Lee Curtis. The Laurie in Zombie's remake is just one banal unremarkable girl, played by an actress that has no uniqueness to her whatsoever. she coudhad been played by any other actress and nobody would know the difference. And that was an important fuck up, the way i see it. Maybe even the most important fuck up in the entire movie. Without anybody with charisma and interest to counter-ballance Meyers, like Jamie Lee Curtis in the original Carpenter movie, the movie is fataly flawed.

I don't remember Nick Castle playing "The Shadow". I'm pretty sure Alec Baldwin played him. Although, at 5'10, I'm sure you're right about Castle being the "tallest person they could" find to "portrait" The Shape.

Okay, I guess I wasn't clear. Regardless of how tall he actually was in the original, that was never played up and grossly overused. The mask, the overalls - both added to the nebulous nature of him, making him more scary for me. You don't need to use the height - like zombie is doing - as an additional way to scare people. It's not his height or strength that makes him scary.

...I'm addicted to the Halloween series. I have no idea why, really, seeing as only one(maybe two) of the series' films are of any artistical or analytical merit. But since the age of 6 or 7, when I first saw the original, I've been hooked. I own every single one of them on DVD, including 3 versions of the original, the tin-box version of "return," and the producer's cut of "curse." I had a LOT of problems with Zombie spitting in the face of Carpenter's original when I first saw it, but its grown on me in subsequent viewings. The only thing I can't really get past is the horrible casting and performance by McDowell; should've been Brian Cox. In summation, anything with Michael Myers in it will have my $10. And then 4 months after that, it will have my $21 for the DVD. i'm a tool like that.

Should have stopped at #2, which wasn't perfect by any stretch, but at least it was the logical conclusion to the single story. #3 was fun, taking on its own and not within the franchise.

The rest... for me to poop on.

I think that modern horror has to stop emulating the "smarts" of the 1st "Scream" or the torture porn of "Saw". Instead, it has to find that happy middle ground.

The characters and plot can't be mindless, but they can't be simple suspense thrillers. The kills have to be nice & scary, but have to have some meaning and carry some weight. I mean, really. How many Nightmare on Elm Street fans were truly pissed off that the killed Nancy at the end of Dream Warriors? Even the deaths of some of the kids there had some weight too since small layers of depth were added to them.

Then, in the other camp, you look at Zombie's flick or any of the later NoES or Jason movies and all of the kids look like "meat for the beast" instead of people.

Horror needs a reinvention..... AGAIN. The lessons of old school horror aren't dead. They've just been buried under the weight of "one-up"manship, with each flick trying to be more gruesome or mock smart than the competition.

The problem, as usual, is that studios understand dollars and not stories. Thus, they endlessly imitate, remake and sequelize popular horror films instead of recognizing that fans love the ORIGINALS for a reason: quality storytelling. You can't blame the overall shittiness of modern horror on specific trends, the problem is that the genre is more popular than ever before. If you look at the golden age of horror, the seventies and early eighties in my opinion, horror was regarded by critics and audiences as the red-headed stepchild of cinema. A lot of the people making it had real artistic convictions, or they would have chosen a more legitimate genre to work in. Nowadays studios know they can rule the box office for a weekend with the name brand cache of a Texas Chain Saw Massacre or a Halloween or a Friday the 13th, so they set to work xeroxing the classics for the Twitter generation. Makes me sick, because I know that there are original writers out there fighting hard to get their work read. I'm one of them, goddammit.

When the casting of McDowell was announced, I was actually in favor. It was a bit outside the box, and McDowell can be very effective when given good material(which, by all means, the character of Loomis has). If there was any part of his performance that I DID enjoy, it was the Smith's Grove scenes with him and young Michael. Those scenes showed a genuine, caring, and almost "father figure" type that really wanted to help Michael. But after Michael's escape, the characterization just goes to hell. Granted, a lot of this is the script's fault. But it doesn't help that McDowell admittedly never saw the original, and decided to take his own approach... which manifested itself into that weird, greedy, book-deal-mongering version of Loomis that we got in the final product. In the original(and subsequent sequels), Loomis's sole driving purpose in life was to get Myers put away, dead or alive. He knew what he was, that he was evil on two legs and that he'd never stop. He spent 15 years trying to help him, and then the rest of his life realizing it was a lost cause and trying to kill him. In Zombie's version, Loomis essentially quits on Michael after 15 years, disappears, spends the subsequent years pushing out tell-all books and tv-movie scripts about the ordeal, and then ONLY shows up when Michael finally escaped. I dunno, it just didn't strike the right chord with me.

The horror genre has always had a consistent, flowing theme to me... through the decades, the horror movies that are released each year are usually 97% shit, and 3% quality. The 3% reminds all of us bloodhounds what can make the genre so amazing, and the rest gets thrown away and relegated to direct-to-video mediums. Unfortunately, its just a genre that is ripe for sub-par shit that can be rolled out in a quick, low-cost fashion and turn a profit on the Blockbuster shelves. You just have to seek out that 3%, because its there. Thank god for the internet, because otherwise that 3% would be a lot harder to find... very recent examples for me are "Frontiere(s)" and "Let the Right One In." Both very good horror films, neither would have been seen by me had it not been for sites like this.

My one big regret regarding Zombie coming back for this sequel, is that when he was initially burnt out and un-committed to a sequel, the producers commisioned Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Muary, who made the amazing french horror film "À l'intérieur(Inside)." That could have been an AMAZING Halloween film. but apparently, they couldn't put together a script to save their lives.

What an overrated film that was! Anyone care to explain to me how that guy a. found out where the vampire lived, and b. got inside of the vampire's apartment. I thought the projectionist had missed a reel, it was such a gigantic leap. Sure it was a pretty looking film, but beyond that it was sloppy and never really scary.

And Rob Zombie's Halloween was horrible. "Love Hurts"? Really, Rob? Really? You don't need to parody Zombie's work because he does it himself.

I don't recall people 'pissing and moaning' about Halloween being remade but I'm sure it happened. But the reason people 'pissed and moaned' about Halloween after they saw it wasn't because it was exactly like the movie..in fact, the 2nd and 3rd acts apparently WERE exactly like the movie but people complained because Zombie pulled the biggest and most common fuckup in all of remake-history...DE-MYSTIFYING the villain. Lucas did it. Twohy did it. Zombie did it. Rattner did it and whomever directed 'Hannibal Rising' did it, idiots who made Highlander 2 did it, etc, etc.

Clear enough? I mean shit people, if you're going to come on here and bitch at people you say are being arbitrary about their bitching, at least don't be arbitrary in the amount of research you do to prove your point about that bitching. Nobody gave a shit Zombies Halloween was a remake until he turned Michael Myers from an unknowable and unstoppable evil force into a troubled and abused, white-trash redneck with a parent/familial grudge.

As for Let the right one in: he knew where the vampire lived because he saw the man and the 'girl' move in to the empty apartment in his building. He also approached the man in the Chinese restaurant so he knew exactly who he was. He got in because the door was left unlocked (this is better explained in the book). Of course, in the book he finds something quite different in the bathroom, but the issue of him getting in and how he does so is not as bad as you describe.

The hype is a bit much though..it's definitely a great and unorthodox vampire movie, very interesting if not entirely unique but it's by no means the 'best vampire movie ever'.

Is simply this, the whole childhood thing was no needed. It was interesting, yes, but IMO, it takes what was once a maniacal, cold killing machine and turned him into a pissed off kid with stepdaddy/bully/mommy/sister issues. Awww poor Mikey had an abusive step dad so he went nuts and started killing people. It totally takes away from the mystique of the character to give him a motivation for his killings. He is no longer an insane killing machine, he is a pissed off little boy, yea that's real scary.
