how knowledgeable/involved is Stallone with camera work, shot setup, angles, lenses, etc.? I hear a lot about him actually being very good with actors, and you gave a great glimpse into that, but all the movies he's directed have been a little, you know, clunky, directorially. Rocky Balboa and Rambo were both well edited and paced, but the shot selection was so BORING, sorry to say. I honestly wonder if he knows that getting people hooked into his characters and stories is enough, and rudimentary visual direction is enough. but then a movie like this comes along, that is completely an ensemble piece, with presumable 4-6 people on screen at a time, and a more cinematographically inclined director would feel much more at home, I'd think. does he leave a large amount of those decisions to the DP? is he stepping it up a bit?

and don't let the haters get you down, Big Guy. I for one would be super bummed if Statham had broken your neck and then gone for a slushie.

I don't know, Jet Li seems out of place among those guys. Carl Weathers or someone other '80s western action star might have been aight. Oh yeah, and it's little worrisome that the scene with Dolph did not appear to end in success.

He would have nailed that scene. I'm sorry, but no matter how smart Dolph Lungdren supposedly is, he is not a good actor. He is flat, stiff, and lacks charisma. Watch "Showdown in Little Tokyo" for plenty of evidence of this. Van Damme would have certainly pulled off the scene Lungdren had such trouble with.

by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead
Jun 19th, 2009
06:49:46 AM
Listen up everyone, we all know that Harry sits and monitors all of the TB's of his posts sweating, naked, with a ding-dong in one hand and a fucking Suzie-Q in the other.

Why doe he do this? Because that's one thing that Harry is actually really fucking good at, answering the questions we all throw at him. Yet, despite begs and pleas for an answer in numeorus TB's on this movie, Harry has remained silent on the Rating.

Now let's really stop and think about this because it isn't too fucking difficult and all chatter about this movie being PG-13 should stop cuz it aint gonna happen. First off, we have SLy stating the now infamous PG-13 comment, when? On April fucking Fool's Day. This has spawned an incredible amount of protest and creaming but most importantly, ut has keopt all of us talking about the movie. It has set us up to be falling over ourselves wit glee and ejaculations just for finding out that the movie is rated R.

Now, think back to the moment we heard about Rocky Balboa and Rambo 4, the main consensus was something like this, "BWAAAHHAAAHHAHHA" Right?

Two things changes our minds. The first was that Rocky Balboa was actually really damn good and earned its spot up with some of the best Rocky movies and it fucking owned the others. The second thing that changed our inds was a Stallone directed red-band trailer that we all watched on this site of Rambo 4. Do you remember the first time you saw that? Holy fuck, we all went apeshit.

So now, we have Sly, an intelligent man who has proven himself to be incredibly in tune with his fans, knowing what his winning formula was for this comeback stage of his career. Carnage, absolute fucking carnage. Bringing the violence back to an R rated action movie. Making an action movie for his adult fans because the teenagers today don;t give a fuck about him anyway and he knows it.

Now he has assembled this incredible cast and seemingly promised an old-school, flat-out, balls to the wall, old school action movie. Do you really think he would go the PG route? Or even PG-13?

Consider that Harry could end this discussion based on what he saw on this set visit alone. He watched a scene of carnage. Now, he could easily tell us whether or not this scene of carnage is more akin to an R rated movie or if Stallone has pussied out to grab the teenagers.

Yet, Harry remains silent despite the fact that Harry gets off, and we all know that Harry gets off on answering our little questions and thinking he has the answers. WHY???? That's the inportant question, why?

I think Stallone has told Harry, or asked Harry to keep quiet about the rating and the level of violence that he has witnessed because Stallone is planning on blowing us all out of the water with the ultimate red-band trailer from hell! If that's not so, than Harry just spent 6 hours with a group of people who all have the answer to one the hottest questions on his site and didn;t ask anyone. If that's the case, he's a moron and should send someone else on trips like this who might actually ask a simple question that we have all been screaming for moths now. My two cents.

while there are instances of movies that were meant to be released theatrically and the studio decides to dump it, make no mistake, Dolph isn't in that group. Neither is Van Damme or Segal for that matter...their movies were made with the budget and production values and knowledge that it would be DTV. so to accuse any of Dolph's movies being so bad they were "dumped", well that's just impossible.

How are you, my friend? I always enjoy reading your posts, but must say I'm not sold on your latest. I hope you're right and all, but believe you are forgetting the current trend of PG-13 action films? And too, were 'they' joking with a PG-13 rating for Die Hard and Terminator 4? I mean, really, man, you'd think those two, they WOULD have been joking about, right? Wrong. It's all about money, and if the studio stipulated to Sly that it will be PG-13, it will... and movies like this-- movies that should be rated R instead of PG-13-- delay the 'official' rating until the very last minute to build excitement and delay fan backlash... happens all the time.

I think the difference between Die Hard 4 and Terminator 4 is Sly's willing to listen to the fans. Look at the fiddy cent backlash and how Sly resonded to us by showing him his walking papers. Harry could easily end this debate by simply reporting what he saw, yet he doesn't. I think, or hope, there's a reason for that. But you're right, lately it does happen all the time, the integrity of living up to all thse great films is shitcanned in favor of extending them with a homgenized (sic?) sequel to bring in the 13 year-old's. On this one, I really hope I'm right.

You think he's shit, fine, two sides to the coin you know. I think he is great. Thats why Im rooting for him otherwise we have to go through god knows what. If this rakes in huge money, who knows, Lionsgate might tell Sly to put in Robert Pattison, you want that? Studio Execs has the money you know, even Sly can't fight that. Thats why, I don't want to start an argument, its Friday but thats why I am supporting Steve.

in the Case of Kurt he is one of them. Sly tried on Kurt, he also tried on Jean Claude, Wesley, Scott Atkins and Sandra Bullock and they are all NOT in. So why should we be interested in STEVE KASAN more than Costas Mandylor or Shit Actors like that. Those kind of guys have NO reference too the "Action ICONS". Same goes with Steve "CANT ACT" Kasan. I guaran-damn-tee you, that QT movie will suck balls and will be a failure, while The Expendables will rock our eyeballs and make a good amount of yummy doughnuts at the box office. And yes, there will be a sequel, but with different actors. A la the Magnificent Seven movies. But Sly is back and doing the greatest things with old-style American action movies! Way to bring the old school to the new school, you Sly dog!

P.S. I wonder how Sly feels about David Carradine. And isn't it fun that he's working with the guy that basically played his character in the updated and much maligned Death Race remake?

....so to speak. I had the great privilege of being on set for the Wednesday and Thursday night shoots (thanks to the kind and gracious Sheryl Main), managed to hang out with harry and Father Geek a bit and take in all the badassery that is The Expendables. Harry nailed all the fine points but I just wanted to follow up on some of the stuff that went down after he left and on Thursday night. The aforementioned showdown with the Somali demanding a ransom turned to a live fire shot that was literally earth shaking. All of The Expendables opening up with fully automatic weapons through a cloud of smoke grenade cover that sent pretty much anything not bolted down vibrating and clattering to the floor. Even the video playback on the monitors skipped frames like a mother fucker as the guns roared. I've grown up around guns, race cars and hot rods and it was absolutely one of the loudest things I've ever heard in my entire life and fucking amazing to behold. I had to head back to Texas early on last night (in relation to the shoot)but I did get to watch Dolph and Jet's fight scene which looked like it took place just after the big shoot out. Watching Jet throw punches with such blinding precision is hard to describe. You don;t really get an idea of how truly fast the guy is until you've seen it first hand. The two went at it for several takes as Sly paced around barking orders and adjusting the shot. I won't spoil how the scene ends up but let's say the little bout had two referees, Sly and a .45. :) It was my first time on a movie set and what a film to break your cherry. Everyone was amazingly cool not the least of whom, harry and Father Geek. Any of you guys and girls who give Harry shit, I'd like to see you spend 5 min with the guy and I guarantee you'd change your tune forever. He couldn't have been a nicer and more friendly guy; thanks again Harry!

Burns actually...old IRC holdover and all the good nicks were taken. Didn't see any scenes with any strong language to suggest an R rating but I do know that the Dolph + grenade launcher (I'm pretty sure it was an M79) scene has the potential to be pretty gory so I wouldn't rule out anything. Couple other things I thought of - barney's truck was about a '53 or so Ford. hard to nail down the exact year model since some of the body was shaved, chopped and modified but it's in the early to mid-fifties range. Sheryl posted a link to a local NOLA news cast and you can see some shots of it @ http://tinyurl.com/qxsjv4 - Also, the men's bathroom, which looked like the set of Saw 1 was the only air conditioned and comfortable room in the building. Kind of a weird yin/yang of terror and comfort.

Movie wise Arnold blows him away and Arnold could to comedy when the script was good and with the right actors, Stallone is nothing more then a body a relic of a long ago time, his movies compared to Arnold's best just don't hold up. Terminator one and two, True Lies ,Predator , Running man, Total Recall, please now come up with Sly's list.

Ya see, Harry could have easily ended all debate right there and said, "Yeah they were throwing out F-Bombs left and right," or, "Blood and guts everywhere," or even, "It was odd how they avoided blood and guts and f-bombs." Instead, he completely ignored the main theme of this and every other Expendables TB. Something's brewing and I think Sly is gonna bomb out and fucking crazy red band trailer and we'll have no eyeballs left for Cameron to deal with when Avatar rolls around.

If this thing rolls out PG-13, it'll be a massive fail and the biggest waste of this superb cast and Basterds will shred this movie.

Sly reads these talkbacks, he actually reads them!! He knows who is waiting with baited breath for this movie and he knows what we want. He knows we got no nostalgiac love for Tango & Cash but mad love for some R-Rated Marion Cofuckingbretti!

Well, friend, not really sure what is was that you 'told me'? That Sly is only teasing us with a PG-13 rating? Well, frankly, and according to Vern, seems I am the one who told you? Two Cuts usually goes the way of PG-13... And also, Sly, like Bruce Willis, isn't stupid. They fucking know who the fans are, what they expect and so forth... just really don't give a damn. Remember Bruce Willis on this site? 'We were shooting a movie, not a rating'. Fucking bullshit. And it never occured to him strange, while shooting that piece of shit, that his character, John-YIPPI-KI-YA-MOTHERFUCKER- McClane never used the word 'motherfucker' once during the entire film??? Yeah, okay, sellout. As for Sly? Mum is the word, which, as I pointed out earlier, is never a good thing when dealing with movie ratings... I'd be willing to bet at this point that it's PG-13 theatrically.

Anybody reading this: walk up to a 12 or 13 year old and ask them who Dolph Lundgren is. Even with all the well known cast we all know your doing this shit for the 25+ crowd who knows who the fuck every single last one of this cast is. Pg13, R, I don't care, I'm sure I can talk all the shit in the world about it. But just the thought of seeing Sly and Dolph in a movie again makes me want to go have anal sex with my wife. So Sylvester, my friend, I'm coming no matter what.

Drag me to Hell was a different movie; this is supposed to be THE end all 80's action film. The type of real action film we all wanted to see in the theaters for years while spidey jumped around in CGI-tights! The bottom line is that action film would be required to be an R. Alien vs. Predator was so off the fucking mark they had to do a sequel to that one (requiem) AND reboot the fucking thing with a movie that forgot AvP ever happened (provable, no, but watch the end product and tell me different). Our appetites were whetted with RAMBO and Mr. Sly knows we're blood-fucking hungry for more. If you think pg-13 is OK, rent Spider-Man 3 again and stay off this fucking board.

Next Rambo will NOT be as violent

While I was on the set of The Expendables, I spoke with producer Avi Lerner and picked his brain in a thousand ways. One of the questions I asked him was whether Rambo V - if it gets made in the first place - will be as violent and brutal as Rambo (2008). Avi Responded with a resounding NO, saying that the story in Burma had to be tackled that way, with extreme and brutal violence so that it portrayed an important aspect of what that story is about. He also told us that they lost at least half the audience for that film with such a hard R, so neither The Expendables nor the Rambo sequel will be as brutal. He did, however, say that it is not an "if" but a "when." Rambo 5 is definitley coming to theaters near you. Also interesting, there will be both PG-13 and R rated cuts for The Expendables and they will test each to decide which to release. The Expendables is costing about 80 million dollars, thanks to so many real explosions, the star cast, and everything else that goes into making an action flick. The studio wants this film to be a big hit and Avi is hoping to turn it into a franchise - including whoever doesn't die in the first film in subsequent films. My money is on Dolph dying.

It's fucking strange. Bond aside, all the really great 'action' franchises I grew up with were all rated R. Think about it... Alien, Terminator, Rambo, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, etc., etc. Hell, I can't really think of one single kick-ass action franchise back in the day being rated anything other than R? And all these franchises were fucking huge! Hell, T2 was the number 1 money maker in 91'!? Do these fucking retarded studio heads really believe adults don't go to the movies anymore? But it's not only that... I remember as a kid, the fact that a movie was rated R was one of the reasons I wanted to see it in the first place! I remember the summer of 87', my friends and I cased the entire neighborhood for someone over the age of 17 to take us to Predator... I just don't get it. AND I FOR ONE, WILL NOT SUPPORT IT.

NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG HERE, I'M NOT COMPARING THE TWO. BUT IMAGINE IF MIRAMAX TOLD TARANTINO THERE WOULD BE TWO CUTS TO HIS PULP FICTION. A PG-13 AND AN R. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU SHOOT A MOVIE, A 'SUPPOSED' VISION, UNDER THAT FUCKING ABSURD PROPOSAL? THERE WOULD BE NO CONTINUITY TO THE SCRIPT, THE TONE WOULD BE WAY THE FUCK OFF, AND NOBODY-- INCLUDING THE DIRECTOR-- WOULD HAVE A CLUE AS TO THE FINISHED PRODUCT. IT WOULD BE A COMPLETE CLUSTER FUCK! On a lighter note: the reason Rambo(4) underperformed at the boxoffice wasn't due to the violence, rather to the shitty marketing and realease date. Having said that, I know of no one who didn't absolutely love the movie once they saw it, with many (like with First Blood) discovering it on dvd. It's always a good sign when the only negative feedback for a movie is that it was too short!

How many of them were rated R for saying fuck loads of times or because of just once scene in the movie? and T2 was rated 15 in the UK, don't think it was R in the states was it?

My point I guess is this - It doesn't have to be an R to be fucking amazing and brutal. Rambo needed to be over the top and bloody as hell. I personally really don't think this movie needs to have that. It can still be amazing, hardcore 80's fun without having peoples head pop off and shit every 5 seconds.

Everybody files in; picking their favorite seats. Some prefer the top, others the middle, and some hideous trolls like the very bottom. Your woman is at your side; yea you dragged her along... shit, who else is going to hold on to your popcorn, soda, and twizzlers while your watching man jizz splash across the screen, eh? You look around and there are no screaming kids with their cell phones and shit... theres no room for tweens in this dojo! Just men, burly men waiting to see all their manliest of manly dreams come to fruition. Then the screen goes black and the credits roll... thats right.. no previews... this movie doesn’t need previews... this movie eats previews for breakfast mutherfuker!!!! After two hours of sheer manliness... our minds explode in testosterone ecstasy!!!! Men pile out of the cinema through the lobby dripping of sweat... sweat by the gallons!! Because real men sweat!! Thier muscles amplified and senses heightened from the manliness. Women and children flee from the lobby as we all are too manly for them... Even gay men... well men who were gay then saw this movie and were given such a large dose of manliness that changes them... the manliness has entered their brain and slap that fucking queen right outta there... there is no room for gays this world of the Expendables... The next day we all go to work... punch our bosses and fuck their wives and daughters because we are all just too manly.... to manly not to... Obama sees this movie and immediately goes to Iran.. guns blazing and blows those mutherfucking extremists straight to hell... because he’s too manly not to.... This film is then shipped over seas to Iraq and Afghanistan where it is shown to the troops.... immediately the grab their guns... whisper their guns sweet names (thats right they name them) and go to work... overnight terrorism is wiped out completely.. because there is no room for terrorism in this world of extraordinary manliness... no room for it in this dojo!!!!! This movie changes the world... We all immediately buy huge trucks and get giant dogs... because real men have those things.... yea they do. The second amendment is thus changed to the first and only true amendment... its reworded to say “ALL MEN MUST OWN GUNS, LOTS OF’EM” Because of this film we are now at this point a nation of men, gun-toting, pissed off manly men. Men who kick ass and chew bubble-gum.... and are often all out of gum. Chuck Norris is elected the next President... for life!!! Because Chuck Norris can. This movie is then shown to kids in high school... and this is how the world will be. Thank You Sly... The Manliest of Men... You made Rocky V and the world hated it... So you said fuck’em I’ll make a sixith... and we all saw that it was good. The world said you were to old to do another Rambo.... you said fuck’em I’ll make a fourth... and we all saw that it was damn good... so your making a fifth. God bless you!

a "hard R" and it's the second highest grossing movie of all time. So Lerner is just making excuses. RAMBO (2008) didn't make box office breaking money because it was a "hard R" it didn't make it because RAMBO (2008) was a piece of shit of a movie. The Rambo character really struck a chord with the zeitgeist of American post Vietnam sentiment in the 80's but in RAMBO (2008)the character was just a passe' cash cow that totally fucking sucked. Lerner should've bought the rights to that Mark Wahlberg movie "SHOOTER" and turned that into the the new Rambo movie. SHOOTER was the movie that RAMBO (2008) should've been. That would've been a perfect marriage and totally fucking owned.

Yes, T2 was, in fact, rated R. And many of the films I mentioned were indeed rated R for their absurd (in a good way) use of profanity throughout(Beverly Hills Cop, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon-- Joe Pesci anyone?) Others, for their over the top violence (Alien, Rambo, etc.) And my point remains the same: an Axl Foley or a John McCane who doesn't swear is no longer an Axl Foley or John McCane. And a Rambo movie--or hell-- any fucking 'supposed' war movie that features 'supposed' bad-ass mercenaries who don't swear or squirm at the sight of blood, even, no longer is entitled to call itself a proper war movie... I was in the military, and I can assure you this; soldiers fucking swear! And war is fucking violent! Anything short of that is just plain silly...

You're right, pal... a PG-13 'Expendables' certainly would qualify as being 'not the film I thought it was'(going to be). I was holding out hope for the return of the kick-ass action genre that has seemingly vanished into thin air the past 10, 15 years. And I was hoping against hope, that it would be my childhood hero, Sly Stallone, who would have brought it back (full circle). But what the fuck, right? Pretty woman are still pretty, the skies still blue, and I still have my R RATED DVD collection to keep me occupied.

I understand that you were quoting another site. I had it mistakenly in my head that TDK was "R" rated, but after a quick check of IMDB I see it was PG-13 which really astounds me because I re-watched it with a girl friend of mine the other night and she nearly had me turn it off because she was so put off by it's violence. My point still stands though. IMO, though you don't see be-headings like in RAMBO (2008), I think an argument could be made that with the multiple shootings/killings in the bank robbery scene in the beginning of TDK, plus The Joker's pencil trick, his sticking his knife in Gambol's mouth and the implied slicing of Gambol's throat, the multiple shooting/cop killings in the Dent/Swat transfer scene, the shootings/cop killings by Two-Face, the torture/killings/face carving by the Joker of the Harvey/Dent/Batman impersonator and particularly the ending scene with TwoFace threatening to kill Gordon's young boy son, it could be argued that TDK is in it's own way nearly just as violent as RAMBO (2008) yet it is the second highest grossing movie of all time. I disagree with Lerner that RAMBO (2008) didn't make boffo box office because of it's "hard R" rating, I suggest that RAMBO (2008) didn't make huge $$ because it sucked. Then I brought up the Mark Wahlber movie "SHOOTER" as what I thought RAMBO(2008) should've been and would've made a perfect marriage and made a much better Rambo movie, IMO. Does that clear it up? (Man, I can't believe TDK got away with a PG-13 rating.)

I was never arguing about the rating for EXPENDABLES one way or the other. My overall point was that violent movies can make money. I should've used the T2 example somebody else brought up instead of TDK which I admit I was wrong about but the point still stands. Lerner's assertion that RAMBO (2008) didn't make money because of it's R rating fails when compared to T2 which also had an "R" rating yet did very well at the box office. THE EXENDABLES has sounded from the get go to me like B-List straight to DVD dreck that I probably won't even watch on cable. So where did you get the idea that I gave a shit what rating EXPENDABLES had at all much less an "R", er, bud?

"If they don't go bowling using the severed heads of their enemies as balls when the mission's over I'm waiting for the DVD!"

"If this isn't a full on combination of gay porn and torture porn that makes me jizz in my pants and shit myself simultaneously, I'm just going to download a pirate copy off the internet!"

The Ratings Board are hypocrites when it comes to violence. Always have been. What really bothers them is language and sexuality. Most of the R Rated movies you guys love from the 80's aren't as violent as you remember them being. They were rated R for language and nudity. Just like they would be today. Take out the language and nudity and you have a PG-13. Why does an action movie have to be as bloody as a SAW movie?

You guys love Christian Bale so much. Most of his successful films are PG-13. You don't think he's a pussy for not ripping people's limbs off and beating them to death with them while cursing like he's having a Shane Hurlbut flashback.

This movie needs to be FUN and SUCCESSFUL if you want sequels. The average audience would walk out shellshocked and depressed if they catered to the dozen or so of you guys in here demanding blood and guts on the level of that last RAMBO movie.

You're missing the point. Everyhting recently has been so watered down. McClane goes PG-13 and...well...it was bad. It's the norm now, not the exception. All of these franchises that we grew up with are being diluted to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

And then, we got news of this movie. Throught he casting, Sly's interviews here, and just the pure attitude surrounding this movie it felt like, "Well, maybe Sly's gonna deliver and give us adults back an old school action movie. It's not that we get giddy when we hear people say, 'fuck.' (Unless it's DeNiro, no one says it like him, but I laugh just looking at him.) It's not that we need to see severed limbs and disembowled men on the battlefield. It was just an attitude, it was a message that THIS MOVIE, this ONE MOVIE, was gonna be an action movie the way an action movie should be. Yes, there will be blood, yes, they will say "fuck." Yet, it's not those things that were important.

It just looked like we were going to get a hard-core balls-to-the-wall, no holds barred, R Rated action movie and that was appealing as fuck to all of us. It didn't have to be on that last Rambo's level, that's not what any of us are saying. Die Hard, Terminator, Commando, these and their kind are different movies if released today in a PG-13 format. They really are.

"You are one ugly motherfucker."

"Yippe-kiyay motherfucker."

"Fuck you asshole"

It's just that with this cast assembled it seemed that someone was going to out of their way to make one for all of us. What we have with a PG-13 Expendables is a movie in which everyone will be holding back. It's just compromised

and you are basing Sly compromising on what? a PG13 hasn't even been confirmed yet has it? jesus! They haven't even finished filming the fucker yet. If you don't think he is making a balls to the wall old action flick then what is he making?

"It didn't have to be on that last Rambo's level, that's not what any of us are saying"...Um that's what a lot of people are saying. Hence a few of us saying calm the fuck down a bit and let's wait and see eh? It's great to speculate what it will or won't be, but to just assume is silly.

If you look back throgh this Talkback, you will see since it was posted that I have been one of the few that has stated that I think the movie will be R-Rated, and I think it will be great.

What my last post was responding to was Cymbalta's questioning of everyone's anger and dissapointment over this movie being made palatable for thirteen year old kids. I was defending the desire of us all to see this movie go all-out, not stating that I hate this movie without seeing it based on the rating that the MPAA, not Sly, gives it. I have not been one of the people om this TB flapping their ar,ms because they heard a rumor of a rating, but I felt the need to explain why everyone wants this movie to be the best it can be, and I really, honestly think that an R Rating is a major factor in that happening.

I like you, man... you're my kind of people. I just wish the 'movie going public at large' were as thoughful and as passionate as we are, no? But the fact is, most people, it is true, probably don't care what the movie is rated. And they simply don't get it, either. Probably never will. Movies-- some movies-- used to be an art form. Now they are a a fucking product. Who loses? We all do. Even you stupid fucks out there that don't get it! You lose too.

Yeah, my man, go see Public Enemies when it comes out. It's no monumental epic piece of art, but it is a damn fine piece of entertainment. I thought it was Mann's best movie since Heat. Kickass shootouts, too.

BTW, last night when I said I told your so, I was only referring to my statements that Harry is constantly lurking and could possibly end this debate at any time by simply *AHEM* REPORTING!!! what he saw, you know, like a reporter would do. Surely, from six hours of on set goodness he could tell us what they were shooitng for just based on language alone. My thoughts were that he wasn;t putting this debate to bed for a reason. Now, it's starting to look like, based on more than one report, he's simply not talking because he just wants to keep pumping this movie and knows the backlash once a children's rating becomes official.

I dunno, I'm conflicted, I just know it won't be anywhere near the movie that I already have in my head and hopes.

It simply MUST be said, that the only action ICON in the film is Stallone himself. It's not like he got Bruce Willis, Kurt Russell, JCVD or fuck, even Steven Stupid. Yeah, he got Arnie in a small cameo playing himself, and Dolph is cool, but surely no fucking ICON! Mickey Rourke can't do much wrong in my book, but he's sure as shit no action ICON!? Jason S. and Jet Li? Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah, they been in there share of action movies, but action ICONS!? What the fuck? Fact is, Stallone was the reason to see the movie... that is, until reports started to surface of its being rating PG-13. Which pretty much translates to: SELLING THE FUCK OUT!

I'm not a comic-book dude, so, like the majority of the folks, I din't know anything about the Watchmen before the movie surfaced. But I do think it's almost comical that the PG-13 KNOWN property that was 'Terminator Salvation' will only end up grossing about 15-20 million more than the R rated, somewhat obscure, no big names in the cast 'Watchmen'... besides, Snyder's previous film, 300, went over 200 mill here in the states. Due in large part to its R rating. Same with Braveheart and a host of other similar movies; Private Ryan, whatever... what do you remember about them? Odds are, the graphic war violence (which would be fitting, of course, due to the fact that they were WAR films). Take that commodity out (graphic, realistic war violence), what are you then left with? Answer: apparently The Expendables.

i`ll pay to see sly and the rest of the guys are bonus! i`ll bet still that willis will be in this and then we have em all 3 sly, arnie & bruce even if they cameo or have very short roles! about mickey he`s fucking cool, dont care if he has a small role, he adds always something special. well sly tried on kurt, jcvd, wesley, segal etc but they simply couldnt or wouldnt. about jason, austin, lee those are the new generation of action guys, well since 00`s and i know why sly put them in and trys to push randy as a new action guy, i`ll get it. but what i also get is, that there are not much good action franchises outthere anymore and if we get one and if that means it needs to be pg 13 well i`ll take the pg 13 and be happy to see another good action franchise with all those icons and legends in the sequels. it already cost 80 mil and you can add 20-30 mil. for advertising so its nearly double as expensive than "john rambo" so this movie must make money or we really will not have a problem about a sequel. we will have the problem that sly will not make that much movies anymore and between this and a R rating i really take that sly will make more movies which he writes, directs and acts in!

that went direct to dvd i`ll never want to see sly ever there again! balboa and rambo made solid good money, but they were simply not world hits like in his good days. if a pg 13 means he can make worldwide something like 50 mil. more, it simply means 50 mil. more and it can count if they make a final bill and see the money doubled his cost and the studio can say "its a hit" we`ll do a sequel! but if its fails and a lot of assholes downloads it, while they go to see a hugh jackman movie with their girlfriends, well then we really have the problem that sly could be in a corner again like he was nearly for 5-6 years before making "rocky balboa" and i dont want him there! put tarantino there this sucker deserves some years in direct to dvd hell and should stop making those chick movies like "bill" "death" & "basterds"!

and it made worlwide less than 30 mil. well even this movie will at least cost 40-50 mil. so its not even...even. the first crank even made more money and a lot of people liked this film! about "transporter 3" it was the weakest of all 3, but it made 100 mil. bucks worldwide and its not rated R. so you cant say people dont like statham and you cant say its only 20-25 mil if they rate from pg 13 to R. if statham is liked from a younger audience and between "crank 2" and "transporter 3" its a difference between 70 mil. bucks and i think its a lot! it does count in the end, believe me. i would like to see more good R action movies but sadly they dont make enough money and if they flop guys we like end up in dvd hell! i dont want to see sly there again!

Zombie, I get all your points. It should be noted T2 was cut by British Film Board Censors to obtain the cert. 15. Various video releases have both cut and uncut. Consult IMDB. Talkbacker, can you really argue Rambo was a good movie, seriously good? That it had fleshed out characters? That it had a really solid plot? That Rambo II had a good director? These movies are for hard action fans. Why? Because ultimately they're not really good movies. T2, Predator, Die Hard. Good action flicks? Totally. Truly good movies? No. The actors in this film are fan-favorites, not huge stars. Most tweens know Arnie as a politician than the king of movies! The majority of the audience who are going to see this movie are going to see these bad-asses back in action on the big-screen, versus another direct-to-dvd. The harsh reality is that tweens today don't really know who most these guys are and won't go see it. They prefer cars that turn into robots (robots to cars? whatever) and gay vampires.

If They Make a Great Action Movie
by cymbalta4thedevil
Jun 20th, 2009

The rating should be beside the point. That's what I'm trying to say.

Terminator Salvation was a flawed movie from the jumpoff. Adding a few F bombs and Moon Bloodgood's naked tits would not have pushed it into masterpiece territory. Making the action bloodier wouldn't have saved it either.

Live Free or Die Hard was a flawed movie as well. Some of the action was just too over the top to suspend disbelief. Having more graphic violence or hearing Bruce Willis say motherfucker for the umpteenth time would not have made it as good as the original.

When you guys go to the theater do you say "I wanna see a great movie" or do you say "Let's watch that. It's Rated R. Even if it's lousy I might get to see some blood and tits and hear people curse." ?

I trust these guys to make a good movie. Maybe a great one. If they save some stuff for an unrated cut, so be it. Every horror movie and sex comedy is doing that these days, even WITH an R Rating in release. If a new generation of teenagers get turned on to how cool these guys are, how is that a bad thing?

rating doesn not mean=good movie! i`ll go and watch it because of the idea of putting them all back on the big screen, not because i think it will outshine "john rambo" on the gore element, which will not happen and never was intended from sly. if you folks dont get the title of the movie and what sly wanted with this, you`ll have a problem and it is not about rating! sly did many good movies, guilty pleasures without an R rating, same goes to arnie, bruce etc and they also did good movie with an R rating, whats the point? as long as the movie is good, i dont care about rating. this besides all other facts has already THE BEST ACTION MOVIE CAST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! better than "predator" better than any "die hard" "lethal weapon" "terminator" or "tango & cash" and you folks talk about rating???? i bet my ass some of the rating folks went to see "wolverine" or "twilight" or "terminator" or transformers" and are the one who do complain about rating. if your girlfirend says lets go see "wolverine" your in but here they talk about, if its not rated R i dont watch it! yeah you´ll download it right, piss off! thhts the reason why all those cool guys, icons etc are in direct to dvd hell, because simply you download those movies these days! so whats the point about R rating? had you supported more R rated movies, well simply they would have been made more but you did not and now you want it in with a do or die saying in this movie and if it aint rated R you wont see it. great go on and destroy what sly trys to do with this movie BUT PLEASE DONT COMPLAIN IF THIS MOVIE FAILS THAT ZAC EFRON, ROBERT PATTISON AND SHIA WILL BE IN THE NEXT WAR EPIC THE BADASSES! if you dont support the real tough guys hollyweired thinks and make new gritty dark movie simply with the "actors" the girls want and support and thats those 3 motherfuckers every man hates! so good idea guys, lets not support "th expendables" downlaod this and wait what happens! since every ass in here hated "INDY 4" and this movie didnt do shit @the box office...oh wait, it did a shit full of money and it will get another "indy" movie and we will see this shithead shia again...get my point? ynot ok. "twilight" didnt make money, oh that was not true...it made a shit lot of money and it gets a sequel and the fucking girls& harry made it happen! so if you try to sabotage this movie and then i dont want you fucks to complain about unbelievable leads in future badass movies. cus soon this will be the case! girls and woman make movies this days, simply men are to lazy to support their movies at the cinema, they download them, or buy the dvds or blue rays. girls and woman support shit they love/like! men only talk about what they like...times changed! men made "star wars", "star treck" "rambo" "terminator" and stuff to what it is but with home computer time they become lazy suckers and woman took over and made "titanic" to what it become. we wnet back with "the dark knight" but even with this coulndt get our status back. women watch a movie they like 3-8 times in the cinema...look at shit like "sex in the city". the last time men brought a series from tv to a movie was "x files"! men dont do much anymore besides talking, they simply dont support the right stuf anymore and everybody has opinios, women just support, where men talk!

With all due respect, I believe you are missing the point all together... we are not saying that all R rated movies are good, or that we only go to R rated movies. If Sly set out to make the best film he could, ragardless of rating, and the film ended up being PG-13, so be it. But this, we fear, is not the case. When a studio stipulates to a filmmaker a rating before the film is even in the can, that's a real fucking problem, right? The word COMPROMISED comes to mind, and a host of others. When Rocky Balboa came out, I was chiming in on how much better it would have been had it been rated R... it was a sequal to a PG rated franchise. But in contrast, our anger is in the fact that they are making PG-13, kid-friendly sequels to hardcore R rated action films, just (and this is important) to make more money. This is the very definition of SELLING THE FUCK OUT. Think of it another way: how would you feel, or how do thing the majority of parents out there would feel if they started making R rated sequels to PG rated franchises? You know, like an R rated sequel to fucking Paul Blart!? I can see it now, Mall Cop 2: Observe and Report!? Catch my drift yet?

I think the problem with the R-rated vs. PG13 is very simple... when I was a kid R movies were movies that pushed the boundaries... there was really no line for them to cross... I mean snuff-films excluded but the line just wasn't there... Now the MPAA and Studios have pushed the line so far back that most movie today are PG-13.. the MPAA thinks they are saving peoples sensability and the studios are thinking they can now get bigger dollars for their films. I recently saw Drag Me to Hell... now you haters can hate all you want, I loved that flick... it was as close as we've gotten to pure Raimi since Darkman. But I had to see the damn thing on a Sunday morning at 11 because all the friggin kids that were in the thing we just nuts and immature. Thats the problem I don't want to have anymore, especially with the slice of fried gold Sly's working on... so R the damn thing... hell X it if you must.. I'm with you on that one, pal. Great movie. But you know something? I never got the feeling that Raimi set out to make it PG-13, rather he just got lucky with the Ratings Board. And that's entirely different from purposely having a gun go off at the very moment John McClane utters his famous catchprase, you know?

I hated Drag Me To hell, I know that most people on this site throw out, "Worst ever" and "hated it" type grand sweepimg statements all the time. It seems for me to make a statement like that would mean very little here considering how often these statements are thrown out.

However, I don't throw them around at all. I walked out of one movie in my life, Mr. Wrong with Ellen Degeneres. There have been a few times that I've wanted to or have been tempted to; Drag Me To Hell was one of these times.

I don;t know if I expected too much of it, no, I didn;t expect too much. Low expectations would not have saved it for me. There was so much wrong with that movie in my opinion that I couldn't possibly pin it down in one post. What surprised me most of all was what I thought the biggest problem was; the directing. I'm happy for all of you who like it and I'm really happy for all of you who got the horror film they've been waiting years for, I really am.

For me,all I was left with was a grand sweeping statment. 2009 provided for me the biggst film dissapointment in my life, the return of Indiana Jones. It destroyed a large protion of what little bit of film innocence I have left. To see an Indy picture with no heart made strictly for a buck broke me alittle inside. But right up there with Indiy on my top 5 dissapointments all time is Drag Me To Hell

I appreciate your passion, man... I REALLY do! You remind me of... ME. Now although I disagree with you on 'Drag Me to Hell'--again, I thought it was BRILLIANT; far and away the most inventive horror film I had seen in years-- I had a similar experience this summer with 'UP'. Scored, I don't know, something like 98% oo rotten tomatoes, and everybody I knew kept raving about it, and so forth... so, and even though I usually just can't get into 'toons all the much, I went, along with my 7 year old son (who also loved 'Drag me to Hell', by the by)... film started out very well, that is, until the house lands in the jungle, and the Saturday morning cartoon hyjinks began... I left the theater scratching my head as to why in the fuck THIS movie was built UP the way that it was...? But to each their own. Keep up the great posts, my friend.

It has to take that one R movie that rakes in millions for execs to see that Rated R action films can draw. The Expendables could have been it but Bourne, Quantum and even Taken has shown you don't need an R rated action film unlike the good old days in the 80s. But I agree with DavidCarradine, Mag 7 was action packed and that was not rated r.

Probably a stupid question considering the forum but why all the discourse regarding the rating? I know it's the internet and thus, home of sandy clam diatribe but you guys HAVE looked at the plot synopsis and the cast list right?? I'm all for the movie being of Rambo 4 brutality and violence but holy shit, any way you slice it this is a dream film and short of Clooney smirking at Pitt and bumping around in suits that cost the GNP of Eastern Suckistan, Hollywood doesn't make films like this. This is our Wild Bunch, our Magnificent Seven, Guns of Navarone. This is like being a kid again and being able to go grab all your favorite action figures and throw them together in a big fight out on the play ground. WTF more can you ask for? So *maybe* (and that's the operative word, we really don't know yet) it's not as gloriously violent as Rambo 4 but again, this has SO much potential in every other possible facet of the film. I can tell you from first hand experience, seeing those guys decked out in tactical gear all standing side by side w the fully automatics roaring, EXPENDABLE tattoos blazing was enough convincing for me. I'm already the first person in line at my theater. Wait until you see some of those set stills or the first teaser and you won't give a fuck if it's PG-13 or R.
Sounds promising

Like they are harking back to the proper characters in an action like the first Predator. Would love it if they establish this as a franchise and cycle through the action legends like Snipes, Willis and others.

I mean Statham and Lee are pretty disposable and their action careers are letdowns. This needs Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, and Van Damme.
Why don't they bring Snipes back into the mix?

Chuck Norris was never the sort of action hero to do this sort of flick and despite the stupid jokes that have endured for what seems like eons, Norris is/was "action-lite" imo. his most memorable film moment, for me, is getting his ass handed to him by Bruce Lee. Segal, really...hmm. I'm sure the shooting schedule conflicted with his latest moo moo fitting or he'd have been in the flick. And JCVD...he said no once but my money is on him being in the sequel. Assuming this movie lives up to it's potential, pretty much anyone on the outside looking in is going to be making a play to be in the follow ups.
And as far as a sequel is concerned.

I've read that Stallone has that intention, barring a box-office collapse. Then we could see Forrest Whitaker, Arnold (in a bigger role if he doesn't run another term) & other actors who couldn't make it in the first time around.

really i would love it to be violent and stuff, but it will not be my do or die thing to watch this movie or not! pg or not...with this hell of a cast! i mean how many movies are outthere with a cast from maybe 2-3 generations of actors/action stars/icons? what happend in the last 20 years on that kind of level, what did we had "private ryan" you gotta be kidding me "thin red line" yeah it was an awesome cast and a very poetic movie, sweet BUT where were the badasses???????? we had "predator" but come on, it was arnold and some cool supporting roles from carl, jesse and bill thats it! the reals badass list is in here... they are here, some people can complain fukker jcvd is not in and why is statham in, or why is segal not in, or where is kurt or your mothers ass????? well its simple SLY ASKED THEM ALL, all the fan faves, all the badasses, action icons etc. the ones who are not in, are the ones who declined like jcvd because he is a pussy. segal because he has problems with avi lerner. kurt because he asks his agent when he can screw goldie and at which time! sandy bullcok wont do violent movies anymore and i really dont know why scott adkins couldnt be in and why dann trejo is not on baord, it will have his reasons?? wesley snipes couldnt make it because of his shitty law problems and the list goes on. SO STOP COMPLAINING WHO IS NOT IN AND WHY YOUR MOTHER WONT DO A LAPDANCE ON SLY! it is how it is, sly tried on all those sorry asses and the ones who got guts are in and the ones who are not in, should i repeat myself FUCK THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this movie will bring balance to awesomeness. i mean look at freaking tarantina (the hope of somany nerds) this fukker promised us for years to make this badass war flick with those icons like sly, arnie and willis and what now, who is in: pitt, schweiger, roth, myers, krüger, brühl...i mean YOU GOTTA BE FUKKING KIDDING ME?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sly is the only one who can bring them together, where this hack tarantina failed hard and big, sly was the only one who could pull it off! give the man credit and respect for bringing us your next favorite movie of all times. so stop this shit about pg 13 like there aint thousands of shitty movies outthere who a rated R! since when does rated R means its a good movie, if you want to see gore and cheap action movies with a little bit more fake blood than usual, well simply rent your rated R movie at the next blockbuster from segal. he makes a lot of rated r stuff..WHOOOHA and yeah acts well and is trained and has a great cast in it, its a good written story, from someone who was nominated for an oscar for screenplay...OH SORRY that was this movie not segals!;) so bitch on about pg13 or rated r...i`ll watch this out of respect for sly and what he created with this. he listend to your sorry asses most of the time, while other fukkers like tarantina do their shit on their own shitty mind and fuck you up in the end, while he fucks up a legend on screen, like he did with kurt russell. well if you like it that way...go watch "basterds" and "deathproof" in a double feature and sit around next to a lot of ugly chicks, who thinks quentin is still the shit and after that you can go watch "twilight" and "sex in the city" if you aint fed up then go watch "transformer" with shia la bifi and "high school musical 3" and after you come out of the cinema, singing and swingingly, i`m gonna beat you up. cus i`ll watched "the expendables" had a six pack and went to the gym before i killed my sixpack!;)
