I know Prince Of Thieves began with Robin in prison during the Crusades and from those pics it seems like this new film will begin with the Crusades as well.

It came out the year I graduated high school; it was also the summer of The Rocketeer. Aside from Kevin Costner's non-accent, the movie still re-plays extremely well. The director, Kevin Reynolds, really did a great job with it. I'm not sure how this version could really add anything more to the same old story though. If anything, it looks like a remake of Prince of Thieves.

PRINCE OF THIEVES was rather too glossy and mainstream for my tastes. I preferred the Patrick Bergin ROBIN HOOD that came out around the same time (anybody see that one? Anybody at all?).

Also there was a great little Robin Hood film (i think from the seventies) called ROBIN AND MARIAN with Sean Connery as an old Robin Hood coming back for one last clash with the Sherrif (Robert Shaw). That was a decent flick.

This should be good too.

My brother is an extra in the scenes they are shooting on a beach in Wales, and they'll be there for ten days. The French will be attacking from the water in longboats, and the English will be defending the beach. It's supposed to be as furious as the opening of Saving Private Ryan.

Robin Hood takes place during the 12th century and the reign of Richard the Lionheart, who, as a Norman King of England ruled as the Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes and Overlord of Brittany. When during his reign did the "French" ever invade England? He practically owned all of France.

I'm assuming this is some kind of temporary getup--maybe a preliminary stage before he goes outlaw.

But it does make me think that Crowe would be great for some sort of Ivanhoe, King Richard-type part. I'd actually be more interested in the film if he played a part like that--sort of a modern counterpart to Henry Wilcoxon.

But no matter how unnecessary this film seems, it's a good cast and I like Crowe. I hope they do something that justifies its existence.

by Dick Bahls
Jun 17th, 2009

Crowe would throw a phone at Flynn, and Flynn would proceed to tear this fat, angry little jerk to pieces. Flynn knew how to enjoy his fame, this angry little jerk does not appreciate it, and he's a faker. Flynn grew up in New Guyney, and fought animals & natives with his bare hands. Also - 70 years from now people will still be watching Flynn's Robin Hood, the definitive one. This will just be another forgotten version that should never have been made.

I can't remember the original premise of this film now, IIRC it was either centred on the Sheriff of Nottingham or the idea was Robin Hood and the Sheriff would have been the same man. Either way, making a straightforward Robin Hood film is pointless, it was already done perfectly well recently with Costner. Ridley Scott is wasting his time on this.

Well, first off. They are both actors so it isn't like they are both legitimate tough guys (this isn't like Audie Murphy taking on Neville Brand).

Secondly, yeah Crowe looks bigger and tougher, but they didn't do fist fights back then. They sword fought. Flynn has shitloads of fencing experience people. He could probably parry all of his attacks, disarm him and than deliver the coup de grâce.

It would be like Stallone taking on Robert Ryan in a boxing match - sure it looks like Stallone can take him until someone points out that Robert Ryan used to box in college (back when college boxing was serious).
