if we started using the word "syfy" for everything that is science fiction, instead of 'sci-fi' just to get the syfy channel lawyers' panties in a bunch.

Isn't "Vulcan" an actual planet in the actual universe? I think it's the closest to the solar system or something like that.

by cylon_conspiracy

04:12:36 PM
I hate investing in new series. Even if this did get a series commitment, Fox would just cancel it anyway. That is what they do. I don't know why Fox puts money into something, only to destroy it. They did with Family Guy, then realized how stupid they were, and brought it back. They did it to Firefly, which was so unpopular that it warranted a feature film. Why even bother putting this crap on the air if they aren't going to support it and nurture it? Just so they can sell 13 episode "the complete season" DVD sets?

Basically, there was nothing in those 12 minutes that would make me tune in. If it goes to series (which I doubt) expect mutual suspicion, blurring of the crew's understanding of reality and virtual reality and probably a sentient computer that is the real culprit. Maybe the computer is called HAL9001? Tedious TV I reckon.

A strong Sunshine vibe from those clips (which is no bad thing). The concept seems ok, except for the reality TV angle. The only part of that I like is the hint that the whole "this mission is now critical to the survival of the species" bit could just be a trick played on the crew by the producers to ramp up tension.

One thing: the AI computer says that there's a glitch with the communications array and it needs to be realigned? Has none of the crew seen 2001?

Let me count the ways this looks fucking terrible:

* third-rate Sunshine rip-off
* more climate bullshit? come on!
* incoherent fuckwit commander
* annoying unrealistic characters
* fucking hours of horrible cliche unrealistic dialog
* utterly woeful acting and direction
* dead horse premise (omg, what is real??!!)
* reality show concept (somehow not just doubling but squaring all the shittiness described above)

Umm, wow. What went wrong? Could this be the first time ever I hope a sci-fi show *doesn't* get picked up?

Boring as hell, a few people have written, eh? I disagree. Very strongly.

I like the premise and the actors. If an extra-solar mission ever gets underway, I can absolutely see reality television cashing in as the sponsor. People might groan about it, but corporate versus private versus species-wide interests might get entangled in ugly ways. I like that Ron Moore hasn't backed off this premise.

The show looks promising. I'll definitely tune in.

Did they select those space candidates for their looks or academic/practical skill qualifications? It seems that American TV characters in this kind of upper lowbrow kind of show have smugness as a main characteristic. I get the feeling that this 'smugness' in many American dramas is result of kids growing up with "I told you so" being their favorite phrase and the times they could use it being the highpoint of their childhood.

i've seen this attitude a number of times around here and it fucking stinks. anyone who doesnt watch a new show that they might be interested in because it may only last x amount of episodes is an idiot. if anything, you're contributing to the low viewing figures it *may* receive, which *may* cause its cancellation. good grief. regarding the new show: havent watched the clip yet, had to get the above off my chest first, but sunshine was another piece of 'danny boyle' crap so if you sat its a ripoff of that then my hopes are set very low. that and caprica was shit too, so i'm not looking forward to 12 whole minutes of potential bilge.

That is really not very good. "Much ado about nothing" problem, also telegraphs that encounter with other life forms is going to come through their VERT systems. The nods to other shows exceed good taste. The stilted talkiness passes all toleration. The underlying concept makes me want to consider watching, but my imagination will probably give me a better story than I'll get from the show. I was surprised by how incredibly low budget and amateurish this looks??? I saw it the other day on another web site, and I am just shocked by how badly it looks...and how bad the writing and acting performances are, and the directon, as well as the overall production as a whole, even the cinematography, the costumes and production design...they are all just lousy??? I guess the actors can't be blamed, other than being generic, and the fact that they were given nothing to do, s the fault of the show's creator and scripters??? The script is just plain bad, and the scenes try to play like reality television docu-style, but it just doesn't play well here!!! It's like "The Hills" on a space craft???

It looks good...no 'spolsions and such, no retread casting...and I like deliberately paced sci-fi. It would be interesting if alien life was communicating through the virtual reality. It would NOT be cool if the corporate entity was manipulating the virtual reality and other stuff on the ship for 'ratings' which is what i fear. Cool = no 'hyperdrive' to save the day. Bad = too much cliche potential...problem with the ship and someone will have to go outside to save someone locked in by fire [pull out maps, look if we access this air duct here we can cut through the flux whatchawhosit and just maybe squeeze through the plasma infibulators...but we'll have to shut off life support for five minutes and everyone might die......okay, lets do it!], or, malfunction with virtual reality causes everyone but one to go crazy. I could write a whole season of episodes right here and now. Please please do something different. Let people bitch cause it's not what they are use to. And yes Margot_Tenebaum, it indeed needs a money.

...to judge a show on the basis of 12 minutes of clips—here are my thoughts on the clip collection:

As presented, it comes off as a bizarre kit-bash of several other shows, notably Harsh Realm, Earth 2, and with just a little of Moore's Galactica (predictably) mixed in. Unfortunately, that latter bit showed up at the worst time, making Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's (an actor I greatly enjoyed in the otherwise worthless New Amsterdam) Pike character in to the same kind of whiny bitch as Lee Adama in that go/no-go meeting. C'mon, we all know the caliber of people who are REALLY selected for spaceflights, let alone the kind that would be chosen for actual long-duration voyages of this nature, e.g. Mars. They will be uniquely stable folk, dedicated to their mission and fairly sure of themselves. Certainly the mission commander will be the most direct and level-headed of them all, so even the idea of putting the go/no-go decision to a vote, let alone the way that he did it?! I would be DEEPLY concerned about the success of the mission having such a fucking little girl in charge!

I also REALLY FUCKING HATE the God-damned eco-fascist hand-wringing that gave us this “oh, the planet has only a century left to live and the fate of the world rests on the success of the Phaeton's mission” bullshit. Come fucking on, people. First off, aren't we already doomed? And in a shorter period than 100 years? Didn't Algore tell us a few years back we had only 10 years to “stop the destruction of the environment before it's too late?” Beyond how damnably ridiculous this particular type of apocalyptic thinking is, would someone tell me how one fucking space mission is gonna save the planet? What're they gonna do, find a habitable planet over there and ship all 6.5 BILLION of us over? And didn't they rip this idea off of the execrable Lost In Space movie, as well as Red Planet? Fer Christ's sake, people! Still your jerking knee and THINK for one motherfucking second (if you can!) before you trot this unmitigated tripe out even as fiction!!!

Those big ol' caveats out of the way, there might be something to this. The sketches of the crew interactions we got show some potential (I could do without the homosexual couple, but whatever). The VR stuff reminds me A LOT of Earth 2 (a VASTLY underrated series), which made wide and even touchingly poetic use of the concept. It naturally has the potential to go all Trek holodeck on us, which would be a MONUMENTALLY bad thing, but benefit of the doubt for the moment. And speaking of bad things to copy from other genre efforts, what's with the DIRECT lift from 2001, with the friendly semi-sentient computer warning about communication problems? As I just said, benefit of the doubt, but that seems to at least begin the step beyond loving homage and towards insulting rip-off. Major props, though, for the scientific realism of the thing. I note that they use a rotating ring to simulate gravity, and their propulsion system is also very real-world.

Overall, I'm not especially jazzed up to see the show from just these clips, but I'm not entirely put off of it, either. I'm more than willing to at least sample any new genre effort, so my PVR's suitably programmed. I hope it's good, but this preview doesn't sell me on it.
