John Adams is the shit, even though the jarring shot selection by the director completely takes you out of the film throughout the series. He insists on using dutch angles at the most inappropriate time. Other than that the series is great.

Is anyone planning to double dip? Or do you think most people will just get the torrents and wait for the extended editions before putting their hand in their pocket? I think New Line have misread their target audience here. Surely the majority of customers who want these titles are geeks and are (stereotypically) proficient in acquiring LOTR in HD without paying for it.

... is because cinematography took a nasty dive in the 80's. Most 80's movies look like absolute shite, especially compared to the great work from the 70's. Goddamned Spielberg lighting with all that unnecessary fog and shit. I blame Lucas.

I also blame Lucas for what's happening in Burma. And cancer.

for a format thats supposed to have massive storage space, why is it that they not only have the same amount of discs as the SD versions, but at least in the case of season 1, the episodes spill onto the final disc? i figured blu-ray would cut down every 6-7 tv season sets in to 3-4 discs if not less. anyway i'm just waiting til the complete series collection and will buy that but yeah...weird.

Think of it as skinny guys in a small room (DVD). Blu Ray is a bigger room, but the guys in the room are obese (due to overload of HD Cheeseburgers and Fries). Just cuz it's a bigger room doesnt necessarily mean you can fit more people. But you can fit fatter fucks in it.

Extrememly underappreciated. Finding out what's i nthe hatch right off the bat. The introduction of Desmond. The story of the tailies. The introduction of Mr. Eko in all his badassery. The button. The numbers. The Orientation films. Jin and Sun meeting. Shannon getting offed. Finding out Kate inadvertantly killed her own father. The return of dick Sawyer. Claire's story during her disappearance. Libby in the nuthouse. The introduction of motherfucking BEN. The blast door map. The Pearl. Michael blowing away Ana Lucia and Libby and sellign out the others. And the kickass finale with Desmond's backstory, the Swan hatch implosion, and the Arctic station finding the island. Yep, sure was a shitty season.

Movies That I Think Are Crappy take on an unexpected hilarity when watched with my pre-teen nephews. Two such movies are SPACEBALLS (1987) and GONE FISHIN' (1997). Man if I had a nickel for everytime JOE PESCI'S character says DANNY GLOVER'S name of GUS, I could bail-out Chrysler single-handedly. If you have no minors watching, you could make a drinking game for each time GUS is uttered. GUS, GUS, GUS, GUS, GUS it is endless. Someone needs to do a GUS count.

Dr Strangelove aspect-ratio is fucked...
by DC Films
Jun 16th, 2009
10:07:02 AM
...Apparently. I read that the original movie is multi aspect - the 'wideness' of the widescreen changes throughout the movie.

Previous copies i've had simply show it full screen (4:3). But this is shit, as you lose the edges (about a 3rd of the picture) in the widescreen parts of the movie... It also looks crap on modern 16:9 TVs.

With this version, apparently, they do the opposite - they crop the top and bottom in the 4:3 parts of the movie.

Either way, the film is being severely screwed over, so there's not much point in buying this version?

It's possible to have the disc change aspect ratio throughout the movie, since The Dark Knight BD does this for it's IMAX sections... So why the hell can't they do that for Dr Strangelove???

Strangelove

10:15:59 AM
"[Editor's Note: The film is presented here in a steady 1.66:1 aspect ratio. (So yes, those slight black bars are supposed to be there.) The original theatrical presentation varied between 1.33 and 1.66. In recent years however, we're told that Kubrick's associates (who manage his estate) have become more comfortable with the 16x9/1.78:1 aspect ratio of HD displays, and they believe that Kubrick himself - if he'd really had the chance to look into it - would have preferred his full frame films to be presented on home video (in HD) at a steady 1.66 to take better advantage of the 1.78:1 frame. So that's the reasoning for the decision.] " Digital bits. http://tinyurl.com/phweum

I wonder what Kubrick would have done? He seemed to really like filling the screen like all his Home video release that were cropped to fit the older television screens.

I got it last Friday, and it's far beyond the 6.5/10 mentioned above. I'm on level 6 out of 7. Probably about 8-10 hrs in. For anyone who loves the movie, you'll love the game. It's a little repetitive: hunt the ghost, shoot the ghost, trap the ghost, but a lot of care was put into the game. The voice acting by all the original actors is fantastic and little details relating to both films are scattered everywhere. Top it off with Ray Parker's theme and the score to the original. It's a class act. At least an 8/10.

Fuck that PS3 shit, go play the old skool 1984 classic by Activision. Go download a C64 emulator, grab the ghostbusters game rom and get ready for some hot retro action. For anyone under the age of 30, you might need to rub alcohol into your eyes first so they're nice and blurry (don't worry about the stinging sensation as its all part of the GB fun) that way you can appreciate how cool and intense video games really were back in the day. You will marvel at the incredible DIGITIZED SPEECH, such as: "nosthesterds!!!!" and "hee shnimmed meee!!!!" It's your choice, you can either feel what it's like to be a REAL ghostbuster and play the original game or you can be a pussy and buy this fangled new techno thing. Bah, kids today!!!

...or allow Nu-Hollywood to fuck film for good

In an accurate transfer Film grain is supposed to be there. The whole point of DVD and now HD was to better replicate the original picture. All film is grainy this is what helps the image look more organic and less artificial - like a typical TV show. Depending on the budget/artistic choices the amount of grain varies greatly even in modern films.

Nu-Hollywood seems to be moving towards a trend of homogenous plasticky looking imagery probably due to the cost saving of digital cameras and the gimmickery of most current DoPs raised on MTV.

This is evident with more and more Blu-Ray releases which have scrubbed away all the grain (see Patton/Star Trek box set for results of this - truly shite). It's also possible that this is due to ignorance about film grain in the wider public where customers are complaining there's something wrong with grainy films..

If we're not careful, gone will be the days when you can distinguish between an average TV show and a well produced bit of cinema. Everything will be digital, flat and lifeless. Casablanca in colour, with added CGI, and probably in 3D!

I love golf. I like watching the pros and playing it. I guess Tin Cup was aaaaaright, but has there ever been a golf movie to compare with the other great sports films? Everyone loves Caddyshack, but I consider that to be more of a zany comedy about country club culture than about golf. What else is there? Bagger (aw hell no) Vance the Magic Negro, The Bobby Jones story with Bobby Jones played by Jesus?

I saw Ghostbusters in 70mm (an original upconvert from 35mm) a few months ago at the Cinerama in Seattle, and it had very noticable grain all throughout. Admittedly, that was on a huge screen, but I think the grain was big enough it'd be noticable on a decent-size TV.

Glad to see there are some people on here spreading the truth about film grain. I'm very worried that the day is going to come when it's standard practice to process all of what makes film look like film out of the picture. Applying digital noise reduction also washes out a lot of the finer details of the picture.. If you don't like grain, only watch new movies and keep your opinions about the classics to yourselves. And Harry, no offense, but you don't help matters by asking "why blu-ray?" in a blurb for a classic such as The Diary of Anne Frank. Being the professed consummate film fanatic that you are, what would possess you to say such a thing? Why blu-ray in general? Because it's the closest a film lover can get at home to the experience of watching their favorite movies in their intended mode of presentation -- theatrical projection -- with all the inherent qualities -- including grain -- intact.

It was the first sequel, there was no rule as to what Jason's style was, and it still took itslelf seriously (even if it was horribly thought out horror like the first movie). It wasn't until the 3rd movie that used the 3D gimmick and had horrible makeup effects and started the stupid use of the hockey mask that it became a running joke.... right?

these days we are becoming less and less acquainted with what films actually looked like in the pre-digital era in my opinion. I am amazed at how good (better than modern releases) some older films look in Blu though...with many optical putting a lot of CGI to absolute shame. Movies used to be photographed and it's easy to see the difference if you see a lot of modern-day stuff - I've seen opinions I respect down on this transfer though so I'm eager to see for myself.

Part of the problem with "1941" I believe is that is was made from one of the only prints of Spielberg's preferred cut, and it was not restored in any way. It's definitely a film that's begging to be re-released with its originally distributed version. I saw it at the New Beverly not too long ago and it looked pretty fabulous for the most part.

Lost Season Two "Another Great?"

Um, no. The first half of Lost S2 dragged on with no revelations and a lame subplot involving the survivors of the tail end of the crashed plane. Most of those characters were dead by the end of season two, making the whole thing kind of ponderous. Sure, they introduced Desmond. But he disappeared and didn't return until the last episode. The early episodes were ponderous compared to Season One.

Then, halfway through, they introduced a character name Henry Gale who changed the show forever. At that point, greatness returned and the show has been on a creative high ever since. Still, we can't ever forget that there was a brief period where this show was starting to suck. Although, I have to admit, sucky Losts were still five times better than most of the dreck on TV. The soft film print you see at the cinema is a multi-generation approximation of the original, and God knows for the last couple of decades they've spooled all the reels together onto one big one so they can rack off to the other rooms in the multiplex. Rather than employ more projectionists because they stay in the same booth and have to change reels every quarter hour. This means they run it "looser" in the gate to prevent unspooling disaster and that can diminish sharpness even more so it's been said. And it's not like anyone bothers much with decent focus these days anyway. Look at the end credits - and in stadium seating cinemas look how fay the top or the bottom of the screen are "out" compared to the opposite end of the screen. So it's not like you're going to see grain like on even an answer print, and as they try to take HD masters as close to the neg or i.p. as they can of course the grain will be more harsh. Doesn't mean it's bad AT ALL. It's probably MORE accurate to the original intent. Presentation at the cinema these days sucks arse. Which is why they're trying to get you to pay EXTRA for decent projection and sound (IMAX-lite) that you should be getting anyway.

And Der langy, NTSC is done, old news. Digital HD has nothing to do with combined analogue luma and chroma signals (hence the joke about NTSC standing for Never The Same Colour) and HD 1080p 24p is the same wherever you go in the world, so if you're watching a flick on BD there's no difference (they keep muddying the waters by including lazy-arse analogue sd extras though). Finally. Although for some reason (probably licensing regions) different masters still get made.

Kubrick aspect ratios
by half vader
Jun 16th, 2009
11:00:37 PM
He intentionally shot 2001 at 2:1 because of the vistas. He intentionally shot Barry Lyndon 1:33/1 or Academy ratio because it was internal spaces and high ceilings/more vertical compositions (there's a visual joke there about "portrait" vs "landscape" format that probably didn't escape him). The Shining wouldn't exactly feel claustrophobic in scope in relation to a human in the middle of the composition. And 1.66 is a standard English format, so that makes sense too. I forget which, but early Bonds are 1.66, and even some recent British stop-motion features were 1.66 (Nightmare before Christmas?).

The arguments about Kubrick's "preferred" aspect ratios will go on forever, but there ARE definitely instances where he went a certain way as I've noted above. Now that tellies aren't teeny tiny boxes (and remember they were 1.33 because that was the original cinema aspect) I don't understand why anyone would want anything BUT the O.A.R. (whether you have a 1.33 OR a 1.78 set).

The film grain on the Ghostbusters Blu-Ray is HORRIBLE
by Bodhizefa1313
Jun 17th, 2009
01:21:29 AM
Upon reading early reviews, I prepared myself for a boatload of grain in the new Blu-Ray and was going to be happy about it because I love the look of real film (not digitized versions of it). However, upon watching my newly purchased Blu-Ray of Ghostbusters, I am here to tell you that the grain in this transfer is above and beyond anything you would ever want to watch on a high definition set-up. It's atrocious. It has more grain than most film school projects done on film and transferred to DV. Seriously, before any of you film grain enthusiasts remark about how silly it is to diss this transfer due to its grain levels, you need to watch the Blu-Ray. If you honestly think it's still a quality transfer after seeing "mosquito noise" instead of any semblance of black contrast, you don't need to own a Blu-Ray player in the first place. Flesh is muddled, color contrast is all over the place, colors are twiqued to a green tint that borderlines on gross, and the grain is the worst I've ever seen in a film budgeted over $500. If this is how the original DP wanted the film to look, then I'm glad he's not "helping" transfer any other films ever again, because it looks bloody awful. I love me some old school film appearance, and I definitely like a nice grain to my older films. But this is an atrocious transfer. The picture has a film NOISE appearance moreso than any type of film grain I'm familiar with. Awful... just awful.

Robocop blu-ray seems equally or more grainy to me as this Ghostbusters release. I bought GB blu-ray today and watched the first 50 minutes. Looks quite good, definitely not screwed up colour-wise like the 2005 release, although there is some slight blown out contrast in places (mainly on shiny surfaces). The sound is fantastic. I was old enough to see this in theatres but never got the chance. Very happy to own it, with grain.

I picked up the game and aside from some install issues and a bit of repetitious action, I'm extremely impressed with it. It's like a fanboys wet dream, the kind of thing that is beyond what I used to fantasize as a young kid obseessed with both games and Ghostbusters.

What a shock, especially since he hasn't had a sense of humor since he played Spicoli. Sure, he can win two Oscars, but apparently the complexities of Larry Fine were too much for him.

"What is my motivation in this scene?"... to get bitchslapped by Moe, you dunce.

Oh, and please take note that the Three Stooges movie deals with Moe, Larry, and Curly. NOT SHEMP. Why? Because Shemp was a worthless, unfunny bitch whose only contribution to modern culture was a hairstyle that would be inadvertantly mimicked by hippies a generation later.

by mraig
Jun 17th, 2009
08:37:17 AM
If you just leave it on the "vivid" setting that it's set to in the store, the brightness and contrast are so jacked up that natural film grain is going to look terrible. If you're not used to them, the proper settings for a TV look too soft and colorless at first, but then once you get used to them you realize that it's a more natural, lifelike look, and the "vivid" setting everyone else uses looks gross and garish. I haven't seen the Ghostbusters Blu-Ray yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people complaining about it are watching it on TVs that are not calibrated correctly.

Harry, you do know that "unrated" means just that?
by Big Jim
Jun 17th, 2009
09:43:26 AM
It has no rating. The Unrated Version contains scenes, or simply shots, not included in the "rated" theatrical version. The additional bits were not part of the film screened by the MPAA, therefore their original rating does not apply and it becomes "unrated" It does not mean it is more hardcore - it does not necessarily contain anything more graphic than what you saw in the theaters.

I'm sure they could re-submit the new version for the DVD to the MPAA to get a rating for it. However, why would they? Instead they can slap the word "unrated" on the cover to make people think they will be getting something that is beyond "R".

the true testament to a growing acceptance of a product is to see how Wal-Mart places said product.

I went to my local Wal-Mart today and their Blu-Ray section had not only shrunk, it had been moved to a lower traffic area of the store. Meanwhile, they had gotten rid of their $5 bins and replaced them with a tower set up, with the $5 DVDs spined out, making the perusal of that product much more customer friendly. So, from a customer stand point it looks like Wal-Mart is focused more on selling quantity of lower priced DVDs then in increasing their stock of Blu-Rays

Don't get me wrong, I'm on board the Blu-Ray upgrade (I believe this record is skipping), I'm just not convinced the average consumer, or even the retailers where those consumers shop, are fully on board the Blu-Ray bandwagon.

It's an observation folks, that's all.

How very uncreative of you.

You pretty much conceded my earlier point of Blu-ray being a niche product with your enlightened statement of "And re: "most folks". Who gives a F, really?".

If you're a fan of Blu-ray you might want to consider the opinions (and wallets) of "most folks". Why would you want to do that? Well, because if most folks view your beloved product as something marketed toward a smaller, different demographic they might feel inclined to ignore it. Turn their noses up at it. Refuse to upgrade.

It is in Blu-Ray's best interest to distance itself from this notion of being a niche item.

Maybe you remember the advent of DVD and how people were reluctant to upgrade to a DVD player from VHS. Back then I convinced a lot of people to upgrade simply by informing them that they would no longer have to rewind their movies.

That was an easy sell.

Now you have to convince people to not only upgrade their video players, but their televisions and sound equipment as well. A little bit harder.

And then there's those people who remember what happened to HD-DVD...

Yeah.....Bluray will die in the next few years.....

....the shelves and displays may be getting bigger, because the studios are trying to cram the technology down the throats of dumb fucks that will surely swallow. But look at their actual growth, it is disappointing in relation to projections, and the sales still aren't a hair on DVD'S nuts. They will never go Bluray exclusive with less than 10% of the market. Sales of the players last Christmas season were a huge let down. At this point I don't think the know how to inspire people to make the switch. Unless they start selling the players for less than 100 bucks and the discs for the exact same price as DVD's now, than it will never happen. There will always be the niche market with extra cash to blow on needless shit, but this will not become the norm and it will eventually go the fuck away.

Ghostbusters Blu-Ray

I got Ghostbusters on Blu Ray pre-release and there is the most grain I've ever seen in my life. However, unlike Harry when I've seen Ghostbusters rereleased on the cinema, there was as much grain. So the transfer is accurate from the existing 35 mm, it's transferred the excessive grain as well. On comparing simultaneously with my old Ghostbusters DVD, I can see that they tried to remove the grain (on the DVD version), hence the poor picture and 'improve' the colour/color from the original grading. My overall opinion is to keep a good distance from the screen and appreciate that details are much improved from the DVD and has the original colour grading. Sony have done as much as they can to keep the picture as it was originally. Any grain/noise reducing filters will alter the look.

Look at the Big DVD sale on Amazon for Blu clues...
by SoylentMean
Jun 18th, 2009
07:39:30 PM
Ha, I can't believe I just typed that, but I did. On Amazon they're selling blu-rays of The Searchers for a little of 7 bucks and the Adventures of Robin Hood Blu for about $12. They're selling the 2 disc dvd of The Adventures of Robin Hood for about a buck less. Does that make any fuckin' sense to anybody? They're trying to get rid of two of the most highly rated (via Bluray.com) Blu-Ray discs, ever, at a fire sale price.

by SoylentMean

Gee, I guess I'm so simple I didn't notice that. Yeah, they're locked up, some behind glass and some in easily defeated "keeper" cases (I'm talking tinfoil and a fuckin' oversize bag, bitch). The thing is, even the Blu-ray discs they have locked up are in a small case, off to the side, seemingly abandoned. And there's nobody fuckin' browsing the section.

Oh, and yes, no we do have wide tvs (no apostrophe needed there pal, it's called grammar).

Sure it's nice n all with shiney detail and shit, but it's not a home entertainment revolution like DVD was. The future lies in downloads and media convergence, not in collecting dusty discs. In ten years time both DVD and Blu Ray will be dead and buried. Trust me I come from 2019 and have seen this - the world will be just like Blade Runner with flying cars and shit.
And in 2019 nobody will watch TV anymore

Men will just stay at home all day, drugged to fuck, filling up their replicant sex slaves. The plastic whores will never moan about putting the garbage out, never tell you "not in the ass", never tell you "say you love me, like you mean it", never act like its the end of the world during "blood week", never tell you to cut the lawn, never tell you to wash the dishes, never threaten to kill you for looking at porn, never slap you for looking at another womans ass. The downside is they can't cook for shit and can't clean their dirty vaginas out. All in all though, life in the future is great.

Okay so last night I sat down with the lights low, at a proper viewing distance, and watched my Ghostbusters blu-ray. Not only is the grain not a problem, but the movie looks FANTASTIC. Harry I've been reading your site almost non-stop since it was brand new (1996 or so), and you seem to be a major fucking goofball when it comes to the technical side of films. You really need to STFU when it comes to picture quality because your head is obviously several feet up your gigantic ass.

You may be right about downloads But there will always be people who value higher-quality and more features. Yes, many will download movies like many people download MP3's now. But just like MP3's aren't even CD quality (let alone vinyl quality), I doubt the downloadable movies will be the same quality as the hard copies of the movies. Also, I am not sure about the commentaries and related documentaries that come now.
