I haven't seen that in decades. I remember liking the film (even though I do remember thinking I found Orson Welle's Turkish cop to be a little over the top).

As for Rio Grande, I always like this film a lot. It isn't as daring or challenging as the other Cavalry trilogy movies in some ways, but in many ways that makes it more appealing. This one always seemed to be more about the men in the cavalry troops and not so much about the the commanding officers.

The Roman riding scene IS fun, too. I have had this edition of this movie for a few years, it's great.

I agree w/ the assessment of Wayne's acting too-that about sums it up. Gary Cooper was like that too w/ the little looks and body language. It's a fine ending to that cavalry trilogy.

It wasn't until I started living on TCM and got context that I was able to appreciate the greatness these two made.

These just used to be westerns (that I was never very fond of) but in the last couple of years it's been a real treat to see so many of these amazing films for the first time.

"You know, the more I watch these John Wayne movies the more convinced I am that those who say John Wayne couldn’t act never actually watched any of his movies, knowing him only as a caricature, an icon. Wayne says more with his body and eyes in both this and THE QUIET MAN than most actors today." You said a mouthful. Now not every Wayne picture was an acting masterpiece in the least, but most of his pictures with Ford and a few others show much more acting talent than he has ever gotten credit for.

Some heartfelt philosophy from Rob Zombie

Lenny8's tirade reminds me of a quote by Rob Zombie whom I interviewed for GoreZone - a UK based horror magazine (available in Barnes & Noble and Borders in the US). We were discussing Halloween and the online hatred when it was being filmed. He said "Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one - but it's worse when an asshole has an opinion". Mr Zombie - quite the philosopher. My two cents worth - AICN needs columns like this one to teach basic film history to ADD sufferers like Lenny8. It also serves to remind me of some gaps in my DVD collection. Rio Grande now on order, as are Fort Apache and The Quiet Man. Haven't seen them in a couple of decades. Nice work Quint.

If you're any student of film at all, that should be enough said.

Love love love the John Ford westerns. Thanks for a great column Quint! You articulated how I feel about John Wayne perfectly! This really make me think of my long deceased grandfather who introduced me to these movies...great memories associated with this film.

Well, I finally signed in to this site. Been a lurker for some time. Now I gotta stand up for Quint. Lennygnorant, you're suspecting right now that I'm a geezer. Guilty. I was 10 in 1964, which means I was 16 in 1970. Get a smart friend to do the math for ya. Most of the films that Quint reviews, I saw all cut up on TV matinees or late shows. VHS, then DVD, were/are paradise on Earth. BTW, I became a movie geek thru horror pics. They were the big deal way back when -- before video games. I'll still debate anyone about the acting chops of Karloff or Price. Nyyah. Anyway, cuttin' this crap short -- as short as 45 years can be cut -- I've seen damned near every film Quint has reviewed. Some of'em multiple times. And I will tell you that Quint is money, dude. I'll dink-quibble with what he writes 9 times out of 10, but ESSENTIALLY, gettin' to the core, this cat is on the money. He's all right. He's for real, and he's serious, and by that I mean a serious connoisseur of cinematic art. You ain't. You're a punk -- and I don't mean that in the positive sense of the word. You could wise up -- everybody wants you to wise up -- but the smart money says you won't. Pity.
